Song Top 10 Mini-Lists

Post by Live in Phoenix »

These are generally pulled from my top 1,000 all-time list, or from a little outside it. It seems like a big oversight now, but I've never sat down before to figure out, "What are my top 10 favorite alternative rock songs," jazz songs, country songs, etc., but my all-time list has basically done the work for me. I don't know if we'll ever do formal polls for even half of these categories, so I thought I'd post these.

My excuse for which categories to use comes largely from a mid-'90s book edited by Colin Larkin, All Time Top 1000 Albums. I modified, deleted, or added some categories, too. I'm pretty sure that I pegged all the pertinent songs from my all-time list, though it’s hard to tell where some genres end and others begin (for instance, the Dance genre and the Rock & Pop genre). I was often generous when it came to the question of "Does this song really belong here?"

Rock & Pop
1 | Nirvana | Smells Like Teen Spirit | 1991
2 | Prince and the Revolution | When Doves Cry | 1984
3 | Bruce Springsteen | Tunnel of Love | 1987
4 | Nirvana | Come As You Are | 1991
5 | Sting | Be Still My Beating Heart | 1987
6 | U2 | New Year's Day | 1983
7 | Guns N' Roses | November Rain | 1991
8 | James Taylor | Never Die Young | 1988
9 | The Righteous Brothers | Unchained Melody | 1965
10 | Sting | When the Angels Fall | 1991
So many things are Rock & Pop, in a way, so I'm not surprised that my overall Top 10 is the same Top 10 here.

Alternative Rock
1 | Nirvana | Smells Like Teen Spirit | 1991
2 | Nirvana | Come As You Are | 1991
3 | Pearl Jam | Even Flow | 1991
4 | Lana Del Rey | Video Games | 2011
5 | The Magnetic Fields | Sweet-Lovin' Man | 1999
6 | Iggy and the Stooges | Search and Destroy | 1973
7 | The Cure | Burn | 1994
8 | Mazzy Star | Fade Into You | 1993
9 | Red Hot Chili Peppers | Under the Bridge | 1991
10 | The Smiths | How Soon Is Now? | 1984

Blues
Because of no/low representation on my all-time list, I'm leaving out certain genres for myself. (The winner would maybe be John Lee Hooker, "Boogie Chillen." I didn’t want to count blues songs that are done as rock or jazz.)

Christmas
This is better suited for Daniel's Christmas polls, at least for me. I didn't adjust this time for a song's “Christmas spirit” factor. My top two are Roxette's "It Must Have Been Love (Christmas for the Broken Hearted)" and the Pretenders' "2000 Miles," neither of which are very Christmas-y.

Classical
1 | Tchaikovsky | The Nutcracker: Waltz of the Flowers | 1892
2 | Richard Strauss | Also Sprach Zarathustra: Sonnenaufgang | 1896
3 | Claude Debussy | Arabesque No. 1 | 1891
4 | Tchaikovsky | Swan Lake: Introduction | 1876
5 | Georges Bizet | Carmen: Habanera | 1875
6 | Gustav Holst | Mars, The Bringer of War | 1918
7 | Richard Wagner | Tristan und Isolde: Act 3, Prelude | 1865
8 | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Turkish March (Rondo Alla Turca) | 1784
9 | Léo Delibes | Lakmé: Flower Duet/Sous le dôme épais | 1883
10 | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | The Magic Flute: The Bird Catcher's Song | 1791

Country
1 | Garth Brooks | The Dance | 1989
2 | Rosanne Cash | What We Really Want | 1990
3 | Stevie Nicks and Don Henley | Leather and Lace | 1981
4 | Rosanne Cash | Dance with the Tiger | 1990
5 | Hank Williams | Lost Highway | 1949
6 | Johnny Cash | Ring of Fire | 1963
7 | Hank Williams | Why Don't You Love Me | 1950
8 | Roger Miller | Oo-De-Lally | 1973
9 | Patsy Cline | You're Stronger Than Me | 1962
10 | Steve Earle | Fearless Heart | 1986

Cover Songs
1 | The Righteous Brothers | Unchained Melody | 1965 (originally Todd Duncan)
2 | Rod Stewart | Reason to Believe | 1971 (originally Tim Hardin)
3 | Marvin Gaye | I Heard It Through the Grapevine | 1968 (originally by The Miracles, with the same producer; Barry Gordy vetoed its release as a single, and it basically went unreleased)
4 | Frank Sinatra | (Theme from) New York, New York | 1980 (originally Liza Minnelli)
5 | Soft Cell | Tainted Love | 1981 (originally Gloria Jones)
6 | The Animals | The House of the Rising Sun | 1964 (traditional; first known recording as "Rising Sun Blues" by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster)
7 | Whitney Houston | The Greatest Love of All | 1985 (originally George Benson)
8 | Elvis Presley | That's All Right | 1954 (originally Arthur Crudup)
9 | Madonna | Live to Tell | 1986 (originally Patrick Leonard, i.e. his instrumental was submitted for the film Fire with Fire; Leonard worked with Madonna on the new version)
10 | Frank Sinatra | Where Are You? | 1957 (originally Gertrude Niesen)
I didn't adjust for the worthwhile issue of how much the cover song improved on the original. For the iffier examples, I wanted some kind of significant personnel continuity so that someone knew that a newer and potentially better version was being made with a new performer. "What's Love Got to Do with It" was recorded around the same time or earlier by the group Bucks Fizz, but it went unreleased at the time, and as far as I know, the two versions were recorded in isolation from each other.

Dance
1 | Bee Gees | Stayin' Alive | 1977
2 | Deee-Lite | Groove Is in the Heart | 1990
3 | Pet Shop Boys | Being Boring | 1990
4 | Yazoo | Situation | 1982
5 | Grimes | REALiTI | 2015
6 | ABBA | Dancing Queen | 1976
7 | New Order | Bizarre Love Triangle | 1986
8 | Gen X/Billy Idol | Dancing with Myself | 1980
9 | Animotion | Obsession | 1984
10 | Pet Shop Boys feat. Dusty Springfield | What Have I Done to Deserve This? | 1987

Folk (and maybe Folk Rock)
The Folk category allowed for Folk Rock in Larkin's book. I personally found it hard to reliably distinguish Folk Rock from Rock & Pop. (I have low representation for just Folk.) My winner here would be Rod Stewart, "Reason to Believe."

Hard Rock
1 | Nirvana | Smells Like Teen Spirit | 1991
2 | Guns N' Roses | November Rain | 1991
3 | The Rolling Stones | Gimme Shelter | 1969
4 | Guns N' Roses | Welcome to the Jungle | 1987
5 | Queen | Bohemian Rhapsody | 1975
6 | The Who | Baba O'Riley | 1971
7 | Pearl Jam | Even Flow | 1991
8 | The Doors | Break On Through (To the Other Side) | 1967
9 | Black Sabbath | War Pigs | 1970
10 | Iggy and the Stooges | Search and Destroy | 1973

Heavy Metal
1 | Black Sabbath | War Pigs | 1970
2 | Ozzy Osbourne | Crazy Train | 1980
3 | Black Sabbath | Snowblind | 1972
4 | Metallica | Enter Sandman | 1991
5 | Metallica | One | 1988
6 | Tool | Aenema | 1996
7 | Black Sabbath | Changes | 1972
8 | Tool | Sober | 1993
9 | Black Sabbath | Children of the Grave | 1971
10 | Black Sabbath | Sabbath Bloody Sabbath | 1973
I know Led Zeppelin was considered heavy metal at the time, but I think of them these days as hard rock (which was a tougher Top 10 to get into).

Instrumental
1 | John Williams | The Raiders March (a.k.a. Indiana Jones Theme) | 1981
2 | The Chuck Mangione Quartet | Bellavia | 1975
3 | Angelo Badalamenti | Twin Peaks Theme | 1990
4 | Danny Elfman | The Batman Theme | 1989
5 | John Williams | Star Wars (Main Title) | 1977
6 | William Ackerman | Remedios | 1981
7 | Alex de Grassi | Clockwork | 1981
8 | Angelo Badalamenti | Laura Palmer's Theme | 1990
9 | Dick Dale and the Deltones | Miserlou (a.k.a. Misirlou) | 1962
10 | The Ming Ensemble | The Song of the Four Seasons | 1993

Jazz
1 | The Chuck Mangione Quartet | Bellavia | 1975
2 | Sting | Sister Moon | 1987
3 | Billie Holiday | God Bless the Child | 1942

7 | Miles Davis | All Blues | 1959
8 | Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five | Lonesome Blues | c.1926
9 | Miles Davis | Pharaoh's Dance | 1970
10 | Miles Davis | Flamenco Sketches | 1959

Live
Low representation. (My winner would be Bob Marley, "No Woman, No Cry.")

New Age
1 | William Ackerman | Remedios | 1981
2 | Alex de Grassi | Clockwork | 1981
3 | George Winston | Blossom/Meadow | 1982
4 | Enya | Shepherd Moons | 1991
5 | Enya | The Sun in the Stream | 1986
6 | William Ackerman | Processional | 1976 (though I greatly prefer the 1986 version)
7 | Kostia and David Arkenstone | The Cello's Song | 1991
8 | Enya | Lothlórien | 1991
9 | Loreena McKennitt | The Mummers' Dance | 1997
10 | Orison | The Butterfly | 1988

6 | Dr. Dre | Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang | 1992
7 | The Notorious B.I.G. | Mo Money Mo Problems | 1997
8 | Pet Shop Boys | West End Girls | 1984
9 | Beastie Boys | So What'cha Want | 1992
10 | Dizzee Rascal | Bonkers | 2009
As you can imagine, I practically forgot about the Pet Shop Boys. But they're here because of their fairly high ranking on the top 1,000 list, not because I thought they had one of the hottest raps I've ever heard.

Reggae
1 | Stranger Cole | Crying Every Night | 1971
2 | Bob Marley | No Woman, No Cry | 1974
3 | Linton Kwesi Johnson | Making History | 1983

Rock & Roll
1 | Elvis Presley | That's All Right | 1954
2 | Bobby Helms | Jingle Bell Rock | 1957
3 | The Everly Brothers | All I Have to Do Is Dream | 1958

8 | The Champs | Tequila | 1958
9 | The Crickets | Oh, Boy! | 1957
10 | Little Richard | Tutti Frutti | 1955

Singer-Songwriter/Bedsitter
I found it hard to reliably distinguish Singer-Songwriter/Bedsitter from Rock and Pop. (I guess my winner would be someone like James Taylor, "Never Die Young.")

Single (i.e., non-studio album)
1 | Simple Minds | Don't You (Forget About Me) | 1985

9 | Cliff Edwards | When You Wish Upon a Star | 1940 (Pinocchio film)
10 | Angelo Badalamenti | Twin Peaks Theme | 1990 (Twin Peaks TV show)

World Music
Not my specialty. (The winner would be... Paul Simon, "You Can Call Me Al"? Or, more strictly, Márta Sebestyén, “Love Just One”?)

Thanks guys. I'd be kind of surprised if we ever do a poll for Country or a lot of these other ones; but if you look through your all-time song submission, you can probably find the answers sitting right there. I was surprised myself what I was essentially calling my top 10 favorites. (I worked this out before posting my all-time list, so it was a week or two from when I started looking into it until last night's post. So hopefully in the next week or two we'll see more posts.)

If I didn't know better, I'd think that people are sleeping on this. Regardless, everyone's essentially already voted on this before, and is currently voting for this again. The following is extrapolated from the final results of The AMF Top Songs of All Time 2018 Edition, as voted on by 62 forum members, and can be compared with the 2021 list in a month or two. I don't think we've ever otherwise had a poll for Alternative Rock, or Blues, or Country, or Cover Songs, or Dance, or Hard Rock, or Heavy Metal, or Jazz, or Punk songs, or Rap/Hip-Hop, or Reggae, or Rock & Roll, or Soul/R&B, or Film/TV Soundtrack.

(6º), in conjunction with Smells Like Teen Spirit, means that the song was #6 all-time on the 2018 list; the format is partially based off Elder's posting of the 2018 list.

Alternative (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (6º) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991
2. (8º) David Bowie - "Heroes" - 1977
3. (13º) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984
4. (14º) David Bowie - Life on Mars? - 1971
5. (17º) Radiohead - Paranoid Android - 1997
6. (18º) The Clash - London Calling - 1979
7. (19º) OutKast - Hey Ya! - 2003
8. (20º) LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends - 2007
9. (22º) The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - 1986
10. (23º) Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart - 1980
This is based around the idea of Alternative starting more or less with the Velvet Underground or with avant-garde subgenres, and being generous with the definition in general.

If you think of Alternative as Alternative Rock, and as it dating back to something like the early/mid-'80s, or more or less to R.E.M., then the list goes more like: Smells Like Teen Spirit; Paranoid Android; All My Friends; There Is a Light That Never Goes Out; (27º) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony; (35º) R.E.M. - Losing My Religion; (41º) The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?; (42º) Pulp - Common People; (50º) The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army; (55º) Radiohead - Creep.

Cover Songs (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (10º) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower - 1968 (Bob Dylan)
2. (44º) The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun - 1964 (Traditional/Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, for instance)
3. (51º) Aretha Franklin - Respect - 1967 (Otis Redding)
4. (57º) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - 1994 (Leonard Cohen)
5. (59º) Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine - 1968 (The Miracles)
6. (72º) Nina Simone - Sinnerman - 1965 (Les Baxter Orchestra)
7. (73º) Johnny Cash - Hurt - 2002 (Nine Inch Nails)
8. (80º) The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin' - 1965 (Barry McGuire)
9. (115º) The Temptations - Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - 1972 (The Undisputed Truth)
10. (118º) Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit - 1967 (The Great Society)
If you think #5 and #10 are a little iffy, then I'll refer you to some other top finishers: Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" (originally Gloria Jones), Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince/The Family), maybe Prince and the Revolution's "Kiss" (Mazarati), and Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" (Mark James). Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" would be #3 here, but perhaps an important requirement is that the earlier version of the song needed to have been recorded, for us listeners to compare.

Dance (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (4º) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - 1982 ("Dance-pop"; BBC Radio 2 listeners' greatest all-time dance record)
2. (11º) The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil - 1968 ("Samba rock")
3. (13º) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984 (Billboard Dance Club Songs #1)
4. (15º) Stevie Wonder - Superstition - 1972 ("Funk, funk rock")
5. (19º) OutKast - Hey Ya! - 2003 (Billboard U.S. Rhythmic #1)
6. (20º) LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends - 2007 ("Disco-rock")
7. (23º) Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart - 1980 ("tying on a pointed hook that's custom-designed for the dance floor")
8. (29º) Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime - 1980 ("Remain in Light ...music to which you can dance and think, think and dance")
9. (30º) New Order - Blue Monday - 1983 (Billboard Hot Dance Club Play hit)
10. (32º) M.I.A. - Paper Planes - 2007 (Billboard U.S. Rhythmic hit)
Update: Frankly, it's kind of horrible trying to decide what could or should count as dance music. I decided to overhaul the list and include a supposed qualifier. I've largely deferred to club music, even though people have certainly danced to rock, jazz, you name it. Here's the original list: 1. (20º) LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends; 2. (30º) New Order - Blue Monday; 3. (62º) Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence; 4. (64º) M83 - Midnight City; 5. (66º) Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out; 6. (95º) Donna Summer - I Feel Love; 7. (96º) ABBA - Dancing Queen; 8. (101º) Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - Get Lucky; 9. (117º) Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy; 10. (123º) Blondie - Heart of Glass.

Film/TV Soundtrack (2018, forum members)

1. (13º) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984 (Purple Rain film)
2. (34º) Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain - 1984 (Purple Rain film)
3. (61º) The Beatles - Let It Be - 1970 (Let It Be film)
4. (89º) Eminem - Lose Yourself - 2002 (8 Mile film)
5. (111º) Public Enemy - Fight the Power - 1989 (Do the Right Thing film)
6. (130º) Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive - 1977 (Saturday Night Fever film)
7. (131º) The Beatles - Help! - 1965 (Help! film)
8. (177º) Prince and The Revolution - Kiss - 1986 (Under the Cherry Moon film)
9. (256º) Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) - 1985 (The Breakfast Club film)
10. (259º) Ennio Morricone - The Ecstasy of Gold - 1966 (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly film)
To qualify, the song had to be a new release, released cross-promotionally in conjunction with the movie or TV show.

Hard Rock (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (2º) The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter - 1969
2. (3º) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven - 1971
3. (6º) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991
4. (9º) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 1975
5. (10º) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower - 1968
6. (17º) Radiohead - Paranoid Android - 1997
7. (18º) The Clash - London Calling - 1979
8. (24º) Derek and The Dominos - Layla - 1970
9. (25º) The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - 1965
10. (38º) The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black - 1966
If Hard Rock is a style as much as a volume setting, with much of its heyday in the '70s, then an argument could be made that alternative rock/punk songs don't really belong here. In which case, we can add some extra songs at the bottom: The Who's "Baba O'Riley"; Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine"; maybe not the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army"; probably The Who's "My Generation"; Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir".

Rap/Hip-Hop (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (32º) M.I.A. - Paper Planes - 2007
2. (68º) Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five - The Message - 1982
3. (69º) OutKast - B.O.B (Bombs Over Baghdad) - 2000
4. (79º) Kanye West feat. Pusha T - Runaway - 2010
5. (89º) Eminem - Lose Yourself - 2002
6. (111º) Public Enemy - Fight the Power - 1989
7. (152º) Gorillaz feat. De La Soul - Feel Good Inc. - 2005
8. (157º) OutKast - Ms. Jackson - 2000
9. (176º) Beastie Boys - Sabotage - 1994
10. (207º) Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood - 2001
Something not rap or hip-hop enough? The next couple of qualifiers are Beck's "Loser," and Eminem feat. Dido, "Stan."

Soul/R&B (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (4º) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - 1982
2. (12º) Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay - 1968
3. (13º) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984
4. (15º) Stevie Wonder - Superstition - 1972
5. (19º) OutKast - Hey Ya! - 2003
6. (31º) Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - 1971
7. (34º) Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain - 1984
8. (48º) Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come - 1964
9. (51º) Aretha Franklin - Respect - 1967
10. (56º) Al Green - Let's Stay Together - 1971

These were the easiest genres to put together, pretty much just using the top 200 of the 2018 all-time list. More to come...

1. (180º) Funkadelic - Maggot Brain - 1971
2. (234º) Dick Dale - Miserlou - 1962
3. (237º) Miles Davis - So What - 1959
4. (259º) Ennio Morricone - The Ecstasy of Gold - 1966
5. (277º) Daft Punk - Da Funk - 1995

8. (372º) John Coltrane - A Love Supreme, Part 1: Acknowledgement - 1965

10. (454º) DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt - 1996

Punk (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (18º) The Clash - London Calling - 1979
2. (160º) Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the U.K. - 1976
3. (163º) Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop - 1976
4. (196º) Patti Smith - Gloria - 1975
5. (230º) The Undertones - Teenage Kicks - 1978
6. (260º) Iggy and the Stooges - Search and Destroy - 1973
7. (272º) Green Day - Basket Case - 1994
8. (273º) Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love? - 1978
9. (296º) The Clash - Train in Vain (Stand by Me) - 1979
10. (299º) The Jam - Going Underground - 1980
You can expend a lot of energy questioning an act's punk rock credentials. If you think Television's "Marquee Moon" (all-time rank #85) is punk, then it's #2 here. If you want to argue that the Stooges and 1980 Jam weren't punk, then we proceed to maybe Patti Smith Group's "Because the Night" (#375), maybe Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers's "Roadrunner" (#389), maybe Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" (#433), Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen" (467º), let's mention The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (#496), maybe Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" (#499), Gang of Four's "Damaged Goods" (#508) ... let's stop here.

Rock & Roll (2018, forum members)

8. (364º) Elvis Presley - Hound Dog - 1956
9. (378º) Bill Haley and His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock - 1954
10. (379º) Del Shannon - Runaway - 1961

Country (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (73º) Johnny Cash - Hurt - 2002
2. (173º) Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman - 1968
3. (179º) Neil Young - Heart of Gold - 1972
4. (199º) Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues - 1955
5. (239º) Johnny Cash - I Walk the Line - 1956
6. (326º) Dolly Parton - Jolene - 1973
7. (456º) Patsy Cline - Crazy - 1961
8. (492º) Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire - 1963
9. (581º) Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee - 1971
10. (741º) First Aid Kit - Emmylou - 2012
Say for a moment that "Hurt" doesn't count. Then Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" (#799) rounds out the top 10. You could make a case for The Band's "The Weight" (#293) as country rock.

Foreign/World Music (2018, forum members)

1. (286º) Jacques Brel - Amsterdam - 1964
2. (306º) Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin - Je t'aime moi non plus - 1969
3. (332º) Fela and Africa 70 - Zombie - 1976
4. (333º) Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas - 1959
5. (357º) Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto - The Girl from Ipanema - 1964
6. (381º) Édith Piaf - La Vie en rose - 1945
7. (513º) Sigur Rós - Svefn-G-Englar - 1999
8. (518º) Édith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien - 1960
9. (677º) Chico Buarque - Construção - 1971
10. (683º) Buena Vista Social Club - Chan Chan - 1997
I didn't include an instrumental by Ennio Morricone; I wanted the foreign (non-English) aspect to be blatant. (Incidentally, "The Ecstasy of Gold" would have topped the list.) Maybe classical music could be included, in a sense, but they already have their own category. (Debussy's "Clair de lune," all-time rank #592, would have placed toward the end of the list.) Paul Simon's "Graceland" song was #593 all-time, so it would maybe place here depending on what you think should and shouldn't count.

Jazz (2018, forum members)

4. (302º) Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five - 1959
5. (357º) Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto - The Girl from Ipanema - 1964
6. (360º) Nina Simone - Feeling Good - 1965
7. (372º) John Coltrane - A Love Supreme, Part 1: Acknowledgement - 1965
8. (409º) John Coltrane - My Favorite Things - 1961
9. (480º) Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World - 1967
10. (700º) Norah Jones - Don't Know Why - 2002

Blues (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (726º) Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightnin' - 1956
2. (887º) Muddy Waters - Hoochie Coochie Man - 1954
3. (903º) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand - 1994
4. (976º) Howlin' Wolf - Spoonful - 1960
5. (1184º) B.B. King - The Thrill Is Gone - 1969
6. (1214º) Muddy Waters - Manish Boy - 1955
7. (1236º) Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton - Hound Dog - 1953
8. (1308º) Elmore James - Dust My Broom - 1951
9. (1346º) Robert Johnson - Hellhound on My Trail - 1937
10. (1599º) Robert Johnson - Cross Road Blues - 1936
"West End Blues" (all-time rank #1626) and "St. James Infirmary" (#1719) both performed by Louis Armstrong, ranked higher than "Sweet Home Chicago," but I didn't want to really include jazz, or rock, for that matter. We don't spend much time on the Blues, so I wanted to go full Blues, a genre with much of its heyday in the 1930s through '50s. As far as some other borderline cases... If Elvis Presley's "That's All Right" counts (all-time rank #800), then it's potentially #2 here. His version of "Hound Dog" (#364) would potentially top the list. ZZ Top's "La Grange" (#1031) would place here. Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll" (#1240) would place here. Elvis Presley's "Mystery Train" (#1664) would potentially place here. The Animals' "The House of the Rising Sun" (#44), if allowed in, obliterates everything else mentioned. Update: I've decided to count Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, "Red Right Hand," which pretty much has a blues structure; that bumps down Robert Johnson's 1936 recording "Sweet Home Chicago (#1823).

Classical Works (2018, forum members)

1. (592º) Claude Debussy - Clair de lune - 1905
2. (635º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 5: I. Allegro con brio - 1808
3. (746º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 "Choral": IV. Ode to Joy - 1824
4. (958º) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No. 1 - 1988
5. (1204º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 7: II. Allegretto - 1813
6. (1285º) Johann Strauss II - The Blue Danube - 1867
7. (1287º) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Requiem: Lacrimosa - 1792
8. (1339º) Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians - 1978
9. (1389º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Für Elise - 1810
10. (1401º) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake - 1877

Folk, Solo Performance, Acoustic Rock (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (57º) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - 1994 ("Folk, alternative rock")
2. (73º) Johnny Cash - Hurt - 2002 ("Alternative rock, acoustic rock, country, Southern gothic")
3. (80º) The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin' - 1965 ("Sunshine pop, folk rock")
4. (103º) Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue - 1975 ("Folk rock")
5. (156º) Tracy Chapman - Fast Car - 1988 - ("Folk rock")
6. (194º) Leonard Cohen - Suzanne - 1967 ("Folk")
7. (223º) Bob Marley and The Wailers - Redemption Song - 1980 ("Folk")
8. (258º) Bob Dylan - Desolation Row - 1965 ("Folk rock")
9. (264º) The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - 1965 ("Folk rock, raga rock, psychedelic folk, psychedelia")
10. (319º) Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City - 1982 ("Folk rock")
Folk is such a bothersome category that I practically wanted to pretend like it didn't exist. I very specifically didn't want to include rock performances of folk songs, or Bob Dylan rock songs ("Like a Rolling Stone," the popular version of "The Sound of Silence," the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man"). I generally looked for a stripped-down, Unplugged or coffeehouse sort of performance.

4. (412º) Black Sabbath - Iron Man - 1970
5. (416º) Metallica - Master of Puppets - 1986
6. (478º) Metallica - One - 1988
7. (538º) Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name - 1992
8. (577º) Metallica - Enter Sandman - 1991
9. (693º) System of a Down - Chop Suey! - 2001
10. (755º) Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name - 1982

Reggae (2018, forum members)
Image
1. (141º) Bob Marley and The Wailers - No Woman No Cry - 1974
2. (218º) The Specials - Ghost Town - 1981
3. (223º) Bob Marley and The Wailers - Redemption Song - 1980
4. (666º) Jimmy Cliff - Many Rivers to Cross - 1969
5. (710º) Desmond Dekker & The Aces - Israelites - 1968
6. (721º) The Clash - (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais - 1978
7. (754º) Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come - 1972
8. (775º) Bob Marley and The Wailers - One Love/People Get Ready - 1977
9. (813º) The Wailers - Get Up, Stand Up - 1973
10. (970º) Bob Marley and The Wailers - Is This Love - 1978

And the one list to rule them all...
Rock & Pop (2018, forum members)

1. (1º) Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone - 1965
2. (2º) The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter - 1969
3. (3º) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven - 1971
4. (4º) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - 1982
5. (5º) Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - 1975
6. (6º) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991
7. (7º) The Beatles - A Day in the Life - 1967
8. (8º) David Bowie - "Heroes" - 1977
9. (9º) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 1975
10. (10º) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower - 1968
Like with my list, the final top 10 by everyone all counts under the very broad term of "Rock & Pop."

I didn't bother with any further genres. I think the only entry for New Age was Enya's "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)." Show Tune/Stage Musical didn't really work out. I noticed Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" (originally from The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd), Big Brother and The Holding Company's "Summertime" (originally from Porgy and Bess), and Chet Baker's "My Funny Valentine" (originally from Babes in Arms), none of which of course were pulled from cast recordings.

Thanks Henry. So the remaining genres for me to post are for the forum's Blues picks and Classical picks (and Rock & Pop, which is just the overall top 10). I have to scour and re-check the entire top 2,000 results to compile a top 10 for those ones. I doubt many people could name, offhand, what the forum's #1 Blues song is from the 2018 listings.

(Debussy's "Clair de lune" would have rounded out the list.)
It will be interesting to compare these results to the non-English poll once that's complete. Oddly, Amsterdam wasn't even nominated, though Brel had 7 other songs including Ne me quitte pas among the nominees.

By the way, I think individual polls of many of these genres would differ quite a lot from these lists. Anyone voting in say, a hip-hop or reggae or punk poll would likely be somewhat of a fan of those genres, so the results might not be comparable to the general all-time songs list in which tons of people participate, many of whom don't include a lot from some niche genres. Also, there is disagreement over what counts as a real song for some genres (like I doubt Hurt would top a country poll or Strange Fruit would top a jazz poll).

I don't think I've seen Strange Fruit do anything but excel around here. I figured that if it was to perform somewhere poorly, it'd be in one of those surveys where the most voters show up (as if the song just has niche appeal and is propped up by the loudest and most frequent forum voters). But it clobbered Miles Davis's "So What."

My point was "do enough people consider Strange Fruit a jazz song for it to top a jazz poll?" Not whether its support on the forum is higher than any jazz song - that is beyond dispute.

Real jazz fans don't even think it's her best track. It certainly does not sound like jazz, and is only even spoke of at all as jazz because of who the artist is. It's kind of like when "Yesterday" gets ranked as a rock song. No survey of Beatles fans would rank "Yesterday" as #1, yet it's probably their most valuable copyright.

If it's not jazz, then what in the world is it? What have I been listening to for years? For one thing, I don't think a composition is immutably one genre. If you play a song as jazz, it basically makes it jazz. If they were trying to NOT make a jazz recording, they didn't go about it well. (Also, if they were trying to make a rock record, or reggae, or punk or electronica, ha ha, then they didn't go about it well.) Incidentally, my favorite track of Holiday's is easily "God Bless the Child."

I guess to me vocal jazz and instrumental jazz are two different genres, and when I hear the term "jazz" I think of the latter. I think you'd agree that it's difficult to compare Strange Fruit directly to something like So What or Take the A Train.

I just posted the remaining three genres that I was going to compile (Blues, Classical Works, Rock & Pop), but I just edited them into an old post, several posts back, to keep the results more grouped together.

When the 2021 list is published, there's a decent chance that I'll go over the results in a similar fashion.

Late response but I would absolutely count vocal jazz. The songs you mentioned are dissimilar, but jazz has practically as many subgenres as rock does, and just like with rock they don't necessarily get along. There could even be people (probably my older brother and mom) who only like vocal jazz. The category wouldn't just include Billie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan, but selections by (for instance) Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, or Duke Ellington, like where Armstrong sings some numbers or a vocalist pops up in the sessions.

Re: Song Top 10 Mini-Lists

Post by Live in Phoenix »

The following is extrapolated from the final results of the AMF Top 2000 Songs of All Time, 2021 list, as voted on by 76 forum members.
A number like (6º) refers to a song's placing in that list.

Rock & Pop (2021, forum members)

1. (1º) Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone - 1965
2. (2º) The Beatles - A Day in the Life - 1967
3. (3º) The Beach Boys - God Only Knows - 1966
4. (4º) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991
5. (5º) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven - 1971
6. (6º) David Bowie - Life on Mars? - 1971
7. (7º) The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations - 1966
8. (8º) Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - 1975
9. (9º) David Bowie - "Heroes" - 1977
10. (10º) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - 1982
As before, a lot counts under the very broad term of "Rock & Pop."

New: The Beach Boys, "God Only Knows"; David Bowie, "Life on Mars?"; The Beach Boys, "Good Vibrations"
Out from last time: The Rolling Stones, “Gimme Shelter” (#11); The Jimi Hendrix Experience, “All Along the Watchtower” (#15); Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody” (#16).

Alternative (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (4º) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991
2. (6º) David Bowie - Life on Mars? - 1971
3. (9º) David Bowie - "Heroes" - 1977
4. (12º) Prince & the Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984
5. (14º) The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - 1986
6. (18º) The Clash - London Calling - 1979
7. (19º) Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime - 1980
8. (20º) Radiohead - Paranoid Android - 1997
9. (21º) R.E.M. - Losing My Religion - 1991
10. (22º) Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights - 1978
This is based around the idea of Alternative starting more or less with the Velvet Underground or with avant-garde subgenres, and being generous with the definition in general.

If you think of Alternative as Alternative Rock, and as it dating back to something like the early/mid-'80s, or more or less to R.E.M., then the list goes more like: Smells Like Teen Spirit; There Is a Light That Never Goes Out; Paranoid Android; Losing My Religion; LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends (#39); Pulp - Common People (#40); The Smiths - How Soon Is Now? (#41); The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony (#54); The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army (#55); Radiohead - Creep (#57).

New: Talking Heads, "Once in a Lifetime"; R.E.M., "Losing My Religion"; Kate Bush, Wuthering Heights"
Out from last time: OutKast, “Hey Ya!” (#26); LCD Soundsystem, “All My Friends” (#39); Joy Division, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” (#62)

Blues (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (751º) Howlin’ Wolf - Smokestack Lightnin’ - 1956
2. (754º) Howlin’ Wolf – Spoonful - 1960
3. (826º) B.B. King - The Thrill Is Gone - 1969
4. (891º) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand - 1994
5. (940º) Muddy Waters - Manish Boy - 1955
6. (1023º) Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton - Hound Dog - 1953
7. (1176º) Blind Willie Johnson - Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground – 1927
8. (1318º) Muddy Waters - Hoochie Coochie Man - 1954
9. (1334º) Robert Johnson - Cross Road Blues - 1936
10. (1406º) Elmore James - Dust My Broom - 1951
Borderline cases: The Animals' "The House of the Rising Sun" (#25 all-time rank), if allowed in, obliterates everything else mentioned. Nina Simone's “Feeling Good” (#365) would top the list; so would Elvis’s rendition of “Hound Dog” (#397). “West End Blues” by Louis Armstrong (#1211) would place here. As mentioned last time, I didn't want to really include jazz, or rock. I finally decided that “Red Right Hand” could reasonably be considered a blues song. But if you were wondering what came in eleventh, it was Little Walter’s "My Babe" (#1926). We might not have a Top 10 Blues list next time around, now that one of former forum members is gone.

New: Blind Willie Johnson, "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground"
Out from last time: Robert Johnson, "Hellhound on My Trail" (not ranked).

Classical Works (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (571º) Ludwig Van Beethoven - Symphony No. 5: I. Allegro con brio - 1808
2. (585º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 "Choral": IV. Finale (Ode to Joy) - 1824
3. (736º) Claude Debussy - Suite bergamasque: Clair de lune - 1905
4. (1044º) Erik Satie - Gymnopédie n° 1 - 1888
5. (1217º) Arvo Pärt - Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten - 1977
6. (1309º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 in A Major: II. Allegretto - 1813
7. (1336º) Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians - 1978
8. (1387º) Krzysztof Penderecki - Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima - 1960
9. (1399º) Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 14 "Moonlight": I. Adagio sostenuto - 1801
10. (1544º) Sergei Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64: Montagues and Capulets - 1935
If #5, 7, and 8 are rankling you for some reason with their inclusion, I'll mention that #11, 12, and 13 were Johann Sebastian Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" (all-time rank #1582), Johann Pachelbel's “Canon in D" (#1608), and Johann Sebastian Bach's “Orchestral Suite No. 3: II. Air” (#1654).

New: Arvo Pärt, "Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten"; Krzysztof Penderecki, "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima"; Ludwig van Beethoven, "Piano Sonata No. 14 "Moonlight": I. Adagio sostenuto"; Sergei Prokofiev, "Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64: Montagues and Capulets"
Out from last time: Johann Strauss II, "The Blue Danube" (not ranked); Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Requiem: Lacrimosa" (not ranked); Ludwig van Beethoven, "Für Elise" (not ranked); Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky "Swan Lake" (individual sections not ranked).

Country (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (63º) Johnny Cash - Hurt - 2002
2. (141º) Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues - 1955
3. (153º) Neil Young - Heart of Gold - 1972
4. (179º) Dolly Parton - Jolene - 1973
5. (241º) Johnny Cash - I Walk the Line - 1956
6. (269º) Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman - 1968
7. (325º) Patsy Cline - Crazy - 1961
8. (389º) Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire - 1963
9. (450º) Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee - 1971
10. (611º) Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe - 1967
Say for a moment that you're a blasphemer who doesn't think that Trent Reznor is Country -- if we take out "Hurt," then Hank Williams' "I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry" (#713) once again rounds out the top 10. You could make a case for The Band's “The Weight” (#167) as country rock.

New: Bobbie Gentry, "Ode to Billie Joe"
Out from last time: First Aid Kit, “Emmylou" (#845)

Cover Songs/Remakes (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (15º) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower - 1968 (Bob Dylan)
2. (25º) The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun - 1964 (Traditional/Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, for instance)
3. (27º) Aretha Franklin - Respect - 1967 (Otis Redding)
4. (28º) The Mamas & the Papas - California Dreamin’ - 1965 (Barry McGuire)
5. (38º) Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine - 1968 (The Miracles)
6. (45º) Nina Simone - Sinnerman - 1965 (Les Baxter Orchestra)
7. (59º) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - 1994 (Leonard Cohen)
8. (63º) Johnny Cash - Hurt - 2002 (Nine Inch Nails)
9. (72º) Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit - 1967 (The Great Society)
10. (77º) Elvis Presley – Suspicious Minds - 1969 (Mark James)
If you think #5 and #9 are a little iffy, then I'll refer you to some other top finishers: Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" (all-time rank #94, originally Gloria Jones), The Temptations' "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (#120, The Undisputed Truth), and Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (#128, Prince/The Family). Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" would be #4 here, but perhaps an important requirement is that the earlier version of the song needed to have been recorded.

New: Elvis Presley, "Suspicious Minds"
Out from last time: The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (#120)

Dance (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (10º) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - 1982 ("Dance-pop"; BBC Radio 2 listeners' greatest all-time dance record)
2. (12º) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984 (Billboard Dance Club Songs #1)
3. (13º) Stevie Wonder - Superstition - 1972 ("Funk, funk rock")
4. (19º) Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime - 1980 ("Remain in Light ...music to which you can dance and think, think and dance")
5. (26º) OutKast - Hey Ya! - 2003 (Billboard U.S. Rhythmic #1)
6. (35º) The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil - 1968 ("Samba rock")
7. (39º) LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends - 2007 ("Disco-rock")
8. (41º) The Smiths - How Soon Is Now? - 1984 ("a club favourite")
9. (52º) M.I.A. - Paper Planes - 2007 (Billboard U.S. Rhythmic hit)
10. (60º) New Order - Blue Monday - 1983 (Billboard Hot Dance Club Play hit)
It's kind of madness trying to decide what could or should count as dance music. I've included a supposed qualifier, and I've largely deferred to club music, even though people have certainly danced to rock, jazz, you name it.

New: The Smiths, "How Soon Is Now?"
Out from last time: Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (#62)

Film/TV Soundtrack (2021, forum members)

1. (12º) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry - 1984 (Purple Rain film)
2. (46º) Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain - 1984 (Purple Rain film)
3. (73º) The Beatles - Let It Be - 1970 (Let It Be film)
4. (92º) Eminem - Lose Yourself - 2002 (8 Mile film)
5. (112º) Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive - 1977 (Saturday Night Fever film)
6. (136º) Public Enemy - Fight the Power - 1989 (Do the Right Thing film)
7. (152º) The Beatles - Help! - 1965 (Help! film)
8. (186º) Prince and The Revolution - Kiss - 1986 (Under the Cherry Moon film)
9. (204º) Ennio Morricone - The Ecstasy of Gold - 1966 (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly film)
10. (251º) Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock - 1957 (Jailhouse Rock film)
To qualify, the song had to be a new release, released cross-promotionally in conjunction with the movie or TV show.

New: Elvis Presley, "Jailhouse Rock"
Out from last time: Simple Minds, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" (#320)

Folk, Solo Performance, Acoustic Rock (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (28º) The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin' - 1965 ("Sunshine pop, folk rock")
2. (59º) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - 1994 ("Folk, alternative rock")
3. (63º) Johnny Cash - Hurt - 2002 ("Alternative rock, acoustic rock, country, Southern gothic")
4. (65º) Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue - 1975 ("Folk rock")
5. (89º) Tracy Chapman - Fast Car - 1988 - ("Folk rock")
6. (158º) Leonard Cohen - Suzanne - 1967 ("Folk")
7. (238º) Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal - 2008 ("Indie folk, chamber pop, folk rock, folk-pop")
8. (240º) Bob Marley and The Wailers - Redemption Song - 1980 ("Folk")
9. (258º) Joni Mitchell - A Case of You - 1971 ("Folk, folk rock")
10. (292º) Bob Dylan - Blowin’ in the Wind - 1963 ("Folk")
As mentioned earlier, I very specifically didn't want to include Bob Dylan rock songs, or rock performances of folk songs, and I generally looked for a stripped-down, Unplugged or coffeehouse sort of performance.

New: Fleet Foxes, "White Winter Hymnal"; Joni Mitchell, "A Case of You"; Bob Dylan, "Blowin’ in the Wind"
Out from last time: Bob Dylan, “Desolation Row” (#331); The Beatles, “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” (#335); Bruce Springsteen, “Atlantic City” (#352)

Foreign/World Music (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (181º) Fela and Africa 70 - Zombie - 1976 (Nigerian Afrobeat music)
2. (285º) Chico Buarque - Construção - 1971 (Portuguese)
3. (377º) Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto - The Girl from Ipanema - 1964 (Portuguese/English)
4. (381º) Buena Vista Social Club - Chan Chan - 1997 (Spanish)
5. (438º) Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas - 1959 (French)
6. (475º) Jacques Brel - Amsterdam - 1964 (French)
7. (496º) Édith Piaf - La Vie en rose - 1945 (French)
8. (507º) Sigur Rós - Svefn-G-Englar - 1999 (Icelandic)
9. (508º) Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin - Je t'aime moi non plus - 1969 (French)
10. (561º) Édith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien - 1960 (French)
As before: I didn't include the instrumental "The Ecstasy of Gold" (#204) by Ennio Morricone; I wanted the foreign (non-English) aspect to be blatant. Kraftwerk's “Das Modell” (#224) is problematic, at least to me, because there are English and German versions out there -- see also "99 Luftballons," or for that matter, "Komm, gib mir deine Hand" ("I Want to Hold Your Hand") and "Sie liebt dich" ("She Loves You").

Hard Rock (2021, forum members)
Image
1. (4º) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - 1991
2. (5º) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven - 1971
3. (11º) The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter - 1969
4. (15º) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower - 1968
5. (16º) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 1975
6. (18º) The Clash - London Calling - 1979
7. (20º) Radiohead - Paranoid Android - 1997
8. (31º) Derek and The Dominos - Layla - 1970
9. (42º) Guns N’ Roses - Sweet Child o’ Mine - 1987
10. (48º) The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black - 1966
If Hard Rock is a style as much as a volume setting, with much of its heyday in the '70s, then an argument could be made that alternative rock/punk songs don't really belong here. In which case, never mind Nirvana, the Clash, and Radiohead, and we can add some extra songs at the bottom: The Who's "Baba O'Riley" (all-time rank #49); The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (#58); The Who's “Won’t Get Fooled Again” (#107).

New: Guns N’ Roses, "Sweet Child o’ Mine"
Out from last time: The Rolling Stones, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (#58)

9. (273º) The Jam - Going Underground - 1980
10. (323º) Iggy and the Stooges - Search and Destroy - 1973
Is Punk something that virtually only happened from 1976 to 1979? If you want to argue that "Going Underground" and Television's "Marquee Moon" (all-time rank #81) are post-punk, and that the Stooges (and maybe even Patti Smith) are proto-punk, then what else follows "Search and Destroy"? Maybe Iggy Pop's “The Passenger” (#329), The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (#364, proto-punk?), Wire's "Outdoor Miner" (#388, post-punk?), Sex Pistols, “God Save the Queen” (#392), maybe Patti Smith Group's “Because the Night” (#417), maybe Iggy Pop's “Lust for Life” (#435), maybe The Jam's “That’s Entertainment” (#540, post-punk?), Green Day's “Jesus of Suburbia” (#570) ... how about we stop here.

Well, that's it. By and large a lot of consistency, at least when it comes to voting en masse for the all-time song polls. I probably won't do this next time around, as I've pretty much seen what I've needed to see. As panam's Instrumental poll illustrates, though, we can see significantly different results when we hold a genre-specific poll.
