Right here, working backwards. Or at the beginning working this way. Those make the most sense, I guess.
This game is nearing its endgame, when we reach 1000.
ማሕሙድ ፡ ኣሕመድ ፡ [Mahmoud Ahmed] – Tizita (Tezeta): 7
Relaxed, but with an appealing voice and a fine rhythm. Easy to like.

R&B at its most groovy. Very simple, but also very cool.

An unappealing title turns out to make for a good chorus. Light and catchy, brought with a clear enthusiasm. I quite like this one.

Never thought I'd see the day I would give a rating as high as a 4 for a track from 808's & Heartbreak.

Maybe I was too preoccupied, but although I recognize it is well-done, it didn't grab me deeply.

Matia Bazar – Ti Sento: 8
Oh wow, this song was everywhere when I was a little kid. Apparently it wasn't even a hit in Italy, but only in The Netherlands, Belgium and West-Germany. I don't think I ever heard it since the nineties, so that only increases its nostalgia factor, which admittedly plays into my rather high rating. Still, the big emotions with the spacious productions go really well together. I always thought this song was somewhat overwhelming when I was a kid and I can still hear why.

Re: Biggest Fan Songs - August 2021
Loreen - Everytime 5
Tortoise - Gamera 7 A Tortoise song I haven't heard! A little too subtle, even by their standards, but still entertainingly exploratory.
Little Leo - What's It All About 7
Neil Young - See the Sky about to Rain 7 You know you're in for a treat when there's 5 tracks on the album better than this already exemplary tune.
The Drifters - Saturday Night at the Movies 4
Soul Asylum - Homesick 5
of Montreal - Cato as a Pun 7
The Jam - Funeral Pyre 7 My dad, whose world shattered when The Jam called it a day, cites this as the beginning of the end in retrospect. Bunkum! Distinct from their usual sound but claustrophobic and funky.
David Bowie - The Width of a Circle 6
CAN - Dizzy Dizzy 6
Plastikman - Ethnik 5
Tommy James & the Shondells - Hanky Panky 4 Not that bad for a song that Neil Diamond thought was beneath him.
George Harrison - Love Comes to Everyone 2
Brad - The Day Brings 3
Billy Vera & the Beaters - At This Moment 3
Cerys Matthews - Arlington Way 6
Ohio Players - Love Rollercoaster 5
Calle 13 - Adentro 6 Their 2010 album burns bright on Jackson's foreign language poll but this entry is too lyrically dense to cross over to someone with as little Spanish knowledge as me.
Dave Holland Quartet - Four Winds 5
Tom Petty - A Higher Place 6 I'm on the same page as Nassim with this one, I've not heard a better Petty song.
Ramones - Rockaway Beach 8
Mahmoud Ahmed - Tizita 7
Mel Tormé - Comin' Home Baby 8 This has so much swagger!
BADBADNOTGOOD - Hedron 6
The Judybats - Down in the Shacks Where the Satellite Dishes Grow 7 I may dig deeper with this band, I feel they've got songs in this style that I'll full-on love.
Kanye West - Bad News 3 I hope DONDA doesn't stoop to the uniformly dire level of this album (apart from 'Amazing')
Boubacar Traoré - Kayes-Ba 5
Katia Bazar - Ti Sento 4
Tortoise - Gamera 7 A Tortoise song I haven't heard! A little too subtle, even by their standards, but still entertainingly exploratory.

Re: Biggest Fan Songs - August 2021
From Wikipedia article on the song:
"Comin' Home Baby" is a song originally written as an instrumental by Ben Tucker and first recorded by the Dave Bailey Quintet in 1961, and shortly thereafter by Herbie Mann. Lyrics were added by Bob Dorough, and the vocal version became a US Top 40 hit for American jazz singer Mel Tormé in 1962. The song has since been covered numerous times.
This version has Boyz II Men on BV, but I'd still call it jazz.
Re: Biggest Fan Songs - August 2021
R&B and jazz share the primary on RYM, Allmusic says that it has a "heavy jazz/blues melodic pattern in a simple three-chord progression, the song's near-samba rhythm gave it an unusual feel and flavor".Hymie wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 3:05 am From Wikipedia article on the song:

Later on Allmusic "perhaps the most obvious influence is the simple, descending chord progression on the refrain, which was borrowed by Steve Winwood and the Spencer Davis Group on their amazing early-1967 hit "I'm a Man."", which I'd say has jazz and R&B influences, maybe more equally so in the version by Chicago.
The jury's out for me, I don't see why Tormé's rendition can't be considered as bearing the mark of R&B and jazz. You've got a point that backing singers don't automatically alter the genre, though!

I agree that it's more R&B tinged than most jazz, but if I had to pick one main genre for it, it would be jazz.mileswide wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 4:27 amR&B and jazz share the primary on RYM, Allmusic says that it has a "heavy jazz/blues melodic pattern in a simple three-chord progression, the song's near-samba rhythm gave it an unusual feel and flavor".Hymie wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 3:05 am From Wikipedia article on the song:
