Biggest Fan Songs: The Top 100 (July 2021)

The lists for the 2021 version of the All Time Song Poll keep on coming in, but while everyone is looking forward to the new list in a couple of months, we keep looking back to the 2018 results with the July update of Biggest Fan Songs.

What is Biggest Fan? That is a little game we play here, based on the All-Time Song Poll of 2018. In that game, people could vote for their favorite songs of all time, up to a top 1000. Although a lot of songs got multiple votes, there were still a lot of songs that only managed to get one vote. The lonely tunes were then used for this Biggest Fan game, where each day there is a random song from that list is picked. People can than give them a grade and average rating of these votes will be revealed in this topic, ranked from lowest to highest. The plan is to update this top 100 every time we have completed another 100. People are still allowed to vote for songs that have already appeared here and can also change their votes, so list has the potential to remain dynamic.

As is normal, it becomes harder and harder to get in the top 100 as this game progresses. The new songs learned this the hard way, as a surprisingly high amount failed to make the cut by only a hair. The sub-100's are filled with entries from 801 to 900, including some you might have expected to rank. By now you need an average score of 6,763157895 to play with the big boys. Still, the last 100 songs were rated higher than we are used to and we see that with 10 of them appearing in the top 100, three more than last time. Then again, last time saw Johnny Cash taking the number 1 spot with ease. Will any more recent song be able to take this spot away from him?

The Eno picture is hilarious

So, I made a mistake yesterday that affected some of the results. The big leaps by Brian Eno and The Flaming Lips were nonsense - they didn't even get any new votes. I fixed it, which does sadly mean that Eno is out of the top 100 again. It also means that Peter and Gordon, who didn't show up yet yesterday, now are present in the roll-out, as their rank was also too high. This means that Kebnekaise is now back at #100. There are no other mistakes and the big jumps by Dylan & Cash as well as Arcade Fire are genuine.

The results above are now no longer in correct groups of tens, but we'll have to live with it.

The Eno picture is hilarious

Indeed, especially in connection to that particular song, I'll Come Running. Sadly, now that Eno is no longer in the top 100 I had to remove it, but for posterity, this is the image we are talking about:

Some facts:

- No changes in the top and last place. Not much to say about that, is there?
- The most controversial song of the last 100, Honey Hush, was also one that divided the voters between high and low votes. It ended at #709.
- The average score of each song this time around is 5,90745411. Last time it was 5,894698216. We could also see that in the increase in newcomers I guess.
- Deep Purple, The Heavy, Big Thief, The Libertines, Elvis Costello are now joined by Johnny Cash for having two songs in the top 100, though Cash needed help from Bob Dylan. It is still a smaller group than last time, as two acts were reduced to one song: Gorillaz and The Decemberists.
- Brad remains King of the Fans with 9 entries in the top 100. But he slacking off. He barely had any new songs come up last time and the 9 songs present are the same as last time. In the meantime erstwhile King of the Fans Hymie has been working hard and saw his stock rise with 8 (yes, one more than the seven he counted himself), including a new entry. Also coming on strong is hidden player fasbjd, who has almost unnoticably been working his way up in the ranks and now has 5 entries. Krurze, King of Obscure Picks and Dance Tracks did have a lesser time, and went down to 4 entries. Here he joins last update's champ Nassim, faded star Zombeels, sonofsamiam and StevieFan13, for a competitive fourth place. The fifth place is also stacked with SafetyCat, Panam, acroamor, JohnnyBGoode, BonnieLaurel and Slick all having three entries.
- Of course, your humble host Rob has once again been ignored a higher rank that is rightfully his. I lost one entry in the top 100 with In the Dutch Mountains falling off, but in a sort of miracle Girl from the North Country jumped in, leaving me with still 2 ranked songs. Of course, I brought heavy guns to the battle this time (or is that 'heavy swords') in the form of masterpiece Id (Purpose), but it was pearls before swine once again.

I actually think they will be. It's a new ranking after all. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if we get some new people come in who were scared off to join in later because the playlist became so long.

Not that I am too scared that there will be too many doubles, considering we had a starting list of over 13.000 songs! With newcomers with original tastes like Mileswide and Schüttelbirne we might increase that number. Plus I gather at least in the top 100 above there will be many songs that will make at least two lists; considering people seem to like these tracks much.

Not that my opinion matters, this is Rob’s game, so what he wants goes, but I agree that a restart with each new iteration sounds best. If a song reappears, it reappears, but that’s part of the fun! Also, many more than just the top three have appeared twice or more! I can’t name them all (I don’t remember) but I know that at least two off the top of my head are getting my vote (Up the Bracket and Suddenly I See) and I didn’t vote last time.

I like the above idea, too. Many of the Biggest Fan songs should appear on multiple lists this time thanks to the game. And, if there are repeats during the next iteration that still didn't appear on a second list, why not give them a second chance at exposure? (Especially since there will always, hopefully, be new voters joining in.)

Got bored and did the math, if we were to do the exact same game, with the same starting list, any song has about a .6% chance of being picked in two games where we pick 1000 songs from a 13000 list. All that considered, the odds are actually lower due to many of the 1000 songs leaving, so getting any repeats would be surprising.

That's a good point. I always use the Spotify playlist to find the dates the songs were posted, but not everyone uses Spotify. I guess I wouldn't have a problem if catch-up votes are posted here in this topic.
