AM Fantasy Eurovision Nominating Thread

Post by whuntva »

I decided to heck with it and to start nominating for the tournament. This is not a do-over or a tribute to all Eurovision songs. This is more of a tournament like Unacclaimed, where we pick a champion from a selection of random songs from each country, though not necessarily competitors in their own right.

General Nominating Rules:
  • Every submission must come from a listed country.
  • One nomination per person per day. You get a second nomination if you had your night's sleep after your first.
  • The song must be unlisted on AM
  • No songs that won the real Eurovision...but "also-rans" are allowed.
  • Songs can come from any language or year so long as they meet the country criteria
  • It must be a "song" with both music and lyrics; no instrumentals (per EBU rules)
  • Since this is not a performance-based event the three-minute time limit is not a hard rule
  • Nominating continues until either all slots are filled or a motion to start begins. I understand some microstates may be harder to find songs for, but I advise at least trying to go all the way.

First, we need to determine a "host" nation. This is an automatic qualifier from the pool. To pick this, I numbered all the countries 1-52 and put them in an RNG. And the Host was determined as...

Germany!

They are one of the big five, so no sixth automatic qualifier (the EBU has a "Big Five" for their largest donors). In Eurovision fashion, these five slots MUST be filled for the tournament to start:

France-Katerine-Le bel aime de Royan
Germany-Ideal-Erschiessen
Italy-Gioachino Rossini-Largo al Factotum (as performed by Tito Gobbi)
Spain-Triangulo de Amor Bizarro-El Gatopardo
United Kingdom-Cave Town-Home

Submissions are also allowed from the following countries:

Albania-Elina Duni and Rob Luft-Numb
Andorra-Hysteriofunk-All the Pretty Little Horses
Armenia-Tigran Hamsayan-The Court Jester
Australia-Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds-People Ain't No Good
Austria-Falco-Junge Romer
Azerbaijan-Sevda Alekperzadeh - Göy-Göl
Belarus-Daj Darogu-Baju-Baj (Hushabye)
Belgium-dEUS-Little Arithmetics
Bosnia & Herzegovina-Dubioza kolektiv-USA
Bulgaria-Andrea-Haide Hopa
Croatia-Time-Makedonija
Cyprus-Kim Nicolaou-Lady and the Parrot
Czech Republic-Bittova and Vaclavek-Sto let
Denmark-Volbeat-A Warrior's Call
Estonia-Kerli-Walking On Air
Finland-Lordi-Devil Is a Loser
Georgia-Hamlet Gonashvili-Tsintskaro
Greece-Aphrodite's Child-Four Horsemen
Hungary-Platon Karataev-Elevator
Iceland-Pascal Pinon-Bloom
Ireland-Mary O'Hara-Oro Mo Bhaidin
Israel-Barry and Batya Segal-Hava Nagila
Kazakhstan-Gauhartas-Khazakhym-ai
Kosovo-The Glasses-Dirty Glasses
Latvia-Prata Vetra-My Star
Lithuania-SKAMP-Nemiegančios Naktys
Luxembourg-Rome-One Fire
Malta-Beangrowers-You Are You Are
Moldova-Cleopatra Stratan-Ceasu' Bate-lar
Monaco-Leo Ferre-Virgit Ans
Montenegro-Freedom-Good Times
Morocco-Ayoub Hattab-Qendil
The Netherlands-Eefje de Visser-De Parade
North Macedonia-Leb i sol-Cuvam noc od budnih
Norway-Evil Tordivel-Voodoo
Poland-Pati Yang-All That is Thirst
Portugal-Amalia Rodrigues-Primavera
Romania-Negură Bunget-Cunoaşterea tăcută
Russia-Theodor Bastard-"Les"
San Marino-Gianluigi Colucci-Tuo per sempre
Serbia-Darkwood Dub-Baobab
Slovakia-[url-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbYHuq8H1Jg]Benjamin Gabe-Speed of Light[/url]
Slovenia-Kaja Draksler Octet-The Last Mowing
Sweden-Dungen-Festival
Switzerland-The Young Gods-Dame Chance
Turkey-Mazhar ve Fuat-Adimiz Miskindir Bizim
Ukraine-Vopli Vidopliassova (Воплі Відоплясова) - ВЕСНА

These are all countries to have participated in Eurovision at least once (with the exception of Kazakhstan and Kosovo, who are sort of my "wild cards").

Get to work and happy nominating. Remember, no hard deadline so take as long as you need.

I'll start with a sample pick.

From Russia: "Les" by Theodor Bastard:
Hopefully, this should be a good indicator of how to pick.

Are unlisted song from listed albums eligible? If so, I'll nominate this:

Dungen | Festival (Sweden)

I'll say yes.

Any song which participated in a past forum tournament like Unacclaimed is also eligible.

Sorry Whuntva, is it possible to change my nom for France ? It was late in the night and I wasn’t exactly with it after a very long day. Têtard has no chance, this one neither but it feels more appropriate

Bubbles are a bit iffy. But given the relative obscurity of your pick and the material for the contest, I will let this one off light. But tread lightly with bubblers.

I hope the Eurovision rules about not allowing political songs don't apply:

From Belarus:

Дай дарогу (Daj darogu, Give way) | “Баю-бай” (Baju-baj /Hushaby)

The video is pretty amazing as well:

Alright, I'll bite. Initially I thought we had to nominate official Eurovision songs, but if that is not the case I don't mind picking a representor of The Netherlands. I feel it is more fun in such a thing to stick with the native language, so no Golden Earring or Shocking Blue, but:

29 countries remain on the board, including one of the Big Five! I thought the UK would have gone sooner.

You're doing great folks. While you might be straining for some of the remaining nations, I feel confident we can get all those slots filled.

Mary O'Hara - Oro Mo Bhaidin

Not be confused with the Canadian Mary Margaret O'Hara.
So no U2, Cranberries, Waterboys, Van Morrison or even Dubliners or Planxty here, but full-on hardcore Gaelic folk.

Now to find something so extremely British for the UK that it makes Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks sound like a hymn to Texas...

19 nations remain, though the Big Five are cleared. All in their native tongue, no less.

Who's left:

Albania
Andorra
Armenia
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bulgaria
Croatia
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Estonia
Kosovo
Lithuania
Malta
Moldova
Montenegro
Morocco
North Macedonia
San Marino
Slovakia
Turkey

I would like to see a bit more Balkan rep. I know there are international-level stars in each remaining nation. Let's keep 'em coming!

EDIT: I made the classic Slovakia/Slovenia mixup. As a partial Slovakian, I apologize. It's SLOVAKIA with a K that is still on the board.

Turns out there was an oversight on my part.

Not only has Monaco competed in Eurovision, they are the smallest nation that's actually won it. And yet I overlooked them when compiling the nations. So I feel it's only fair I provide a nomination to rectify this.

Turns out there is one international-level Monagasque singer...the late Leo Ferre is technically considered French, but was born in Monaco. He has a few songs listed on AM, but this one isn't...

So I nominate Leo Ferre-Vingt Ans
