Here's my list that I like to shuffle from, the only reason it doesn't have way more songs is because I usually forget to add any. I still don't know why Spotify doesn't have the feature to shuffle tracks from saved albums.

Now my random selections:

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
Strong Bad - Fisheye Lens
Kanye West - Black Skinhead
Chvrches - Leave a Trace
Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
The B-52's - Love Shack
The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??
Pixies - Debaser
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Tricky - Black Steel

Please forgive me... all of this is stuff you're already super familiar with, aside from one very silly internet thing. Maybe I should skip this one...

You kind of can shuffle from saved albums.
Just need to add all albums to your "liked" songs, then shuffle !

The Shuffle Game - S2E1 - Safetycat's List

Post by spiritualized »

Thanks Folks

7 participants to start with, but you can still join the game during its run, your list will then be ranked at the end.
For the final ranking, I will do a bonus round where you nominate one song (not randomly) and we rank the list.

Please make sure you play the whole game and rank every list. Seeing the numbers dwindle at the end is a bit disheartening.

1. Parov Stelar ft. Lilja Bloom - Shine
2. Goldfish ft. Monique Hellenberg - Trees and Jets
3. Bonnie Tyler - Faster Than the Speed of Night
4. Boston - Smokin'
5. Lauryn Hill - Every Ghetto, Every City
6. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
7. Enigma - Return to Innocence
8. Placebo - Taste in Men
9. Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails, Red Wine
10. Kongos - Traveling On

I'm so glad that "Shine" showed up in this. I was absolutely enthralled as the song just kept adding more and more elements that I love. "Trees and Jets" provided a similar taste of electronic pop greatness, while Bonnie Tyler brings the exact sort of melodramatic cheese I adore (courtesy of Jim Steinmann, of course). And I will always remember "Smokin'" from South Park's internet trolling montage.

I seriously need to listen to The Miseducation and Bitches Brew already.

Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails, Red Wine - 9
Parov Stelar ft. Lilja Bloom - Shine - 9
Boston - Smokin' - 8
Goldfish ft. Monique Hellenberg - Trees and Jets - 8
Lauryn Hill - Every Ghetto, Every City - 7
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew - 6
Enigma - Return to Innocence - 6
Placebo - Taste in Men - 6
Bonnie Tyler - Faster Than the Speed of Night - 5
Kongos - Traveling On - 5

On this lot:
- The Parov Stelar, Goldfish and Kongos all occupy a similar space for me as "music from university". Kind of grown past it but still will go back from time to time and enjoy.
- Eskimo Joe have a bad name but a really good sound, and I like the song chosen in particular.
- Songs like Shine are why I still enjoy Parov Stelar despite some of his other electroswing work being a bit cringe now.
- Trees and Jets is one I missed on first listen of the album, as it got lost amongst the other, more bombastic songs, but I really enjoyed it today.
- The thing about Jazz is that the more tuneful or poppy stuff I often quite like, but as soon as it gets away from that I'm lost. It beats out the other songs at least for being better made.
- I downloaded the Enigma song entirely because I was collecting the music from various Neil Cicierega mashups at one stage.
- Not much else to comment on the rest, overall not the strongest group but that's what I get for keeping all of my files.

1. Placebo - Taste in Men [Black Market Music, 2000] - Placebo have been kinda special to me. Their debut is a stunner mix of subtly agressive menacing indie rock & fantastic percussions. They carried on for a while but downgraded their quality, however not so much with this track. Good to hear it again.
2. Parov Stelar ft. Lilja Bloom - Shine [Shine, 2007] - interesting track, I like it. Atmospheric to start with but then starts with a lovely electrobeat over a female sultry voice
3. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew [Bitches Brew, 1970] - Massive track of fusion jazz. The only problem with this style is you REALLY have to be in the mood for it. It's suited to smoky parlors and relaxed conversations. This is not my life right now, so it gets downgraded a notch.
4. Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails, Red Wine [Black Fingernails, Red Wine, 2006]. Starts very well, I never heard of this band before. It's tense, carried by a piano lick with drums. The bass joins in and the voice is good. The chorus however, seems a bit generic and loses power rather than being anthemic.
5. Lauryn Hill - Every Ghetto, Every City [The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 1998]. This is not, of course, one of the highlights of this otherwise brilliant album. But still, good funk soul track.
6. Goldfish ft. Monique Hellenberg - Trees and Jets [Three Second Memory, 2013] - Electronic beats over a smooth singing voice, heavy bass - this recipe is ok but has been done a million times before. Moby springs to mind here,
7. Kongos - Traveling On [Lunatic, 2012] - A bit too much on the soppy, soft side
8. Enigma - Return to Innocence [The Cross of Changes, 1993] - pretty average 90s dance beats meets chilled out keyboards
9. Boston - Smokin' [Boston, 1976] - not a fan of Boston, never been.
10. Bonnie Tyler - Faster Than the Speed of Night [Faster Than the Speed of Night, 1983] - Way too cheesy and 80s for me.

Rad shuffle from Brad !
I enjoyed it either a lot (top 5) or not very much at all.

1. Mogwai - Ratts Of The Capital - an absolute classic album and a fantastic song. This goes up in my AT list.
2. The Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun - I love this song.
3. Tori Amos - Silent All These Years - Very Kate Bush-y, but Amos seems to find her stride without sounding too much like her muse
4. Wilco - Standing O - Good rocker, this side of Wilco, I like. More rock, less country.
5. The Constantines - Underneath The Stop Signs - I know nothing of this band, but this is decent indie rock, where do they come from ?
6. Procol Harum - The Milk Of Human Kindness [Take 1; Raw Track] Bonus Track from the album "A Salty Dog" - Deep cut, this one ? Delivers a different side of a band I know, after all, very little of.
7. Blondie - Heroes (Live 1/12/80) Bonus Track from "Eat To The Beat (Re-issue)" - not a really good cover of Bowie's Heroes, but they get by by just being Blondie and a Bowie song
8. Ramones - I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You (Live at Apollo Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, 12/19/1977) From the album "Rocket to Russia (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)" - It's missing the context, on its own, the song doesn't make much sense.
9. Tommy Dorsey And His Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra - All This And Heaven Too - Waayyy too crooney for me.
10. Maria Callas/Nicolai Gedda/Jean-Paul Vauquelin/Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris/Georges Prêtre - Carmen (1997 Digital Remaster), Act 3: Reposons-nous une heure ici, mes camarades - I cannot stand Opera. Even French Opera

1. Wilco - Standing O - 8 | Enjoyed this a lot and was surprised to, I've bounced off Wilco a bit in the past.
2. Blondie - Heroes (Live 1/12/80) - 8 | It's not the most accurate or technically impressive cover, but it compels me still. Might keep coming back to this one.
3. Mogwai - Ratts Of The Capital - 7 | Mogwai never disappoint me, but also rarely get very high in a ranking. Long and enjoyable but gets a bit samey.
4. The Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun - 7 | "...who loves the sun, and I'll say, it's alright."
5. Tori Amos - Silent All These Years - 6 | I do like how this one builds but it loses the momentum too frequently. Overall a bit too sparse outside of the crecendos.
6. The Constantines - Underneath The Stop Signs - 6 | Pretty good but didn't stand out a whole lot.
7. Tommy Dorsey And His Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra - All This And Heaven Too - 5 | I quite like this as an atmospheric piece until Frank appears, then it goes downhill.
8. Maria Callas/Nicolai Gedda/Jean-Paul Vauquelin/Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris/Georges Prêtre - Carmen, Act 3: Reposons-nous une heure ici, mes camarades - 3 | An unexciting opera segment, unlikely anyone's first pick of a track from Carmen
9. Ramones - I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You (Live at Apollo Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, 12/19/1977) - 3 | Can't imagine why the band picked this to go in the extended edition, it's not exactly the best quality or performance.

?. Procol Harum - The Milk Of Human Kindness [Take 1; Raw Track] - Can't access the link provided and haven't found it myself. The original release would have been in the top half somewhere, maybe 3rd or 4th? I quite liked it.

Sorry I was late on this one! NZ back in lockdown as we foolishly opened up our borders to NSW and a dude came over carrying the delta strain AND he went EVERYWHERE!

But anyway, without any further ado, here are my rankings:

1. The Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun
2. Ramones - I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You (Live at Apollo Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, 12/19/1977) From the album "Rocket to Russia (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)"
3. Blondie - Heroes (Live 1/12/80) Bonus Track from "Eat To The Beat (Re-issue)"
4. Wilco - Standing O
5. Procol Harum - The Milk Of Human Kindness [Take 1; Raw Track] Bonus Track from the album "A Salty Dog"
https://www.hungama.com/song/the-milk-o ... /51695911/
6. The Constantines - Underneath The Stop Signs
7. Tommy Dorsey And His Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra - All This And Heaven Too
8. Maria Callas/Nicolai Gedda/Jean-Paul Vauquelin/Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris/Georges Prêtre - Carmen (1997 Digital Remaster), Act 3: Reposons-nous une heure ici, mes camarades
9. Mogwai - Ratts Of The Capital
10. Tori Amos - Silent All These Years

The top three tracks were hard to place as NY punk/proto punk is one of my all time favourite genres and some of the first music I got into during my teens. I love all three of these bands dearly and was lucky enough to see Zblondue perform once!

Tori Amos’ track was my least favourite by far.

She is on a list of acclaimed artists that I’ve tried to listen to but just don’t enjoy!

1. The Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale (from the Velvet Underground & Nico): #286 on my all-time list. Sorry not doing anything to change the prediction here!
2. Buzzcocks - Boredom (from the Spiral Scratch EP): #991 on my all-time list - fun track. Saw these guys on back-to-back shows on tour in '89 after a long layoff - still consider the shows among my favorites all time. Just pure joy
3. Pixies - Bone Machine (from Surfer Rosa): #2188 on my all-time list
4. Smashing Pumpkins - Luna (from Siamese Dream): love this album
5. Ocean Colour Scene - The Day We Caught The Train (from Songs for The Front Row compilation): there's a rawness to this that enhances it's appeal
6. Pulp - Death Goes to the Disco (Countdown Single B-Side): love Pulp but not one of their finest
7. The House of Love - 32nd Floor (from the Complete Peel Sessions): decent track
8. Embrace - One Big Family (from the Good Will Out): maybe tries a little too hard? Not bad but would get on my nerves after a couple plays
9. Weezer - O Girlfriend (from the Green Album): no secret, I'm not a big Weezer fan
10. The Offspring - Why Don't You Get A Job (from Americana): don't understand the appeal of these guys at all!

Thanks!

Re: The Shuffle Game - S2E3 - Spiritualized's List

Here's my shuffle !

1. Embrace - One Big Family (from the Good Will Out) - I'm impressed by the anthemic quality of the chorus, it's simply fantastic. Grandeur, noise, singalong, a great track from a Britpop band which didn't do much more than that after The Good Will Out

2.. The Offspring - Why Don't You Get A Job (from Americana) - I'll disagree with Brad on this one. The Offspring and their brand of "surf/skate punk" did leave their mark on the musical landscape. Of course, they didn't top "Smash", but this song is an example of how much fun they were. OK, they literally copied Ob La Di Ob La Da from the Beatles, but the lyrics are quite amusing and the song is fun to hear, full stop !

3. Pixies - Bone Machine (from Surfer Rosa) Early Pixies at their finest. With their angular indie rock, the Pixies defined an entire decade of cleverly designed songs, a balance between Francis and Deal's singing, and Santiago's stellar guitar playing. They paved the way for Nirvana a few years later.

4. Smashing Pumpkins - Luna (from Siamese Dream)
Classic song, classic album. Some don't rate Corgan's voice in the Smashing Pumpkins, but I like it. Everything gelled between these people and their first three albums are just top notch. This is the closer from the brilliant Siamese Dream and it fits its place perfectly, awash with beautiful melodies, a romantic "So in Love with You", strings and all.

5. The Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale (from the Velvet Underground & Nico) - This is in fact, far from my favorite VU song. I like the simultaneous fragility and harshness of Nico's voice, but the instrumentation is a tad too sparse for me.

6. The House of Love - 32nd Floor (from the Complete Peel Sessions). The House of Love is vastly underrated. Drawn from their second album (after a stint at Creation records, they went major with Fontana), which had all the bells and whistles of a lush production, this Peel session shows the band at their barest, far closer to their original sound. It's interesting to hear the difference between this and the studio version.

7. Ocean Colour Scene - The Day We Caught The Train (from Songs for The Front Row compilation) - When I relistened to this song, a very popular single at the beginning of the Britpop period, I had whiffs of the Jam. I guess OCS was influenced by the seminal band, with a similar voice to Paul Weller's. Unlike their peers, who plundered the Stones and the Beatles, OCS went the Mod way. Unfortunately the influence is a bit too obvious.

8. Buzzcocks - Boredom (from the Spiral Scratch EP). Short, punkish, typical Buzzcocks.

9. Pulp - Death Goes to the Disco (Countdown Single B-Side) - not the best way to get introduced to Pulp, but that's how I dit it ! this was a B Side to the Countdown single, a brilliant song by itself. No wonder that Death Goes To The Disco is a B Side though. I enjoy Jarvis Cocker's voice a lot in this song.

10. Weezer - O Girlfriend (from the Green Album) - Very average Weezer song

Brad - I pretty mush mostly agree with your list rankings and your comments :) (it just changes towards the bottom);

1. The Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale (from the Velvet Underground & Nico): I remember listening to this for the first time. It was like nothing Zi had heard up til that point and I fell in love with it instantly. The drone, the violin scrapes, the minimal drumming, and Lou Reed at his most provocative lyrically, and absolutely nailing it vocally. Beautiful! A great track from a classic album that was light years ahead of its time.
2. Buzzcocks - Boredom (from the Spiral Scratch EP): After Glam Rock, Proto-Punk, and NY Punk, the British Punk scene of this era is my next favourite genre. Tune!
3. Pixies - Bone Machine (from Surfer Rosa): Love anything by these guys. Bring back Kim!
4. Smashing Pumpkins - Luna (from Siamese Dream): Great underrated track from one of the Crown Jewels of alternative album rock
6. Pulp - Death Goes to the Disco (Countdown Single B-Side): love Pulp but not one of their best
7. The House of Love - 32nd Floor (from the Complete Peel Sessions): pretty good track
7. Weezer - O Girlfriend (from the Green Album): OK song from their third best album
8. The Offspring - Why Don't You Get A Job (from Americana): Not their best song from one of their average albums
9, Ocean Colour Scene - The Day We Caught The Train (from Songs for The Front Row compilation): I like one song by this derivative Britpop band snd this ain’t it
10. Embrace - One Big Family (from the Good Will Out): Doesn’t really add anything or say much that other better Britpop bands had done or said before.

Pixies - Bone Machine - 9 (Just a really good Pixies track, might be my favourite off Surfer Rosa)
The Offspring - Why Don't You Get A Job - 9 (I understand the hate for this track completely and I still really enjoy this song. Also made me realise I forgot to put any Offspring on my list, d'oh!)
Buzzcocks - Boredom - 8 (The "badum badum" bit completely sells me on the song. Really fun moment)
Ocean Colour Scene - The Day We Caught The Train - 8 (Can't think of much to say - I like the wordless chorus in this one?)
Pulp - Death Goes to the Disco - 7 (Reminds me I need to listen to more Pulp)
The Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale - 7 (Never been as keen on the Nico tracks)
Embrace - One Big Family - 6 (The large group chorus thing here is enjoyable but does feel a bit dated - overall a very 90's song)
The House of Love - 32nd Floor - 6 (Good but didn't grab me much)
Weezer - O Girlfriend - 5 (The sort of song that fits at the end of an album but is doomed to obscurity)
Smashing Pumpkins - Luna - 5 (Would say the same here except it seems to be quite popular. Personally I find it just a little boring)

1. The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??: #559 on my all-time list, always inspiring
2. Pixies - Debaser: #580 on my all-time list, scorching opener from one of the greatest albums of the '80's
3. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago: #2451 on my all-time list, the prototypical Sufjan tune
4. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody: #2796 on my all-time list. I remember listening to my brother's 45 of this in my grandmother's basement a dozen or so times in a row, lyp-syncing to what I thought were the lyrics while standing on the couch, 1976.
5. Kanye West - Black Skinhead: #4497 on my all-time list, not aging well
6. Tricky - Black Steel: #4666 on my all-time list
7. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street: #6001 on my all-time list. Nostalgia from the '70's gets to me
8. Chvrches - Leave a Trace: #6830 on my all-time list, but likely dropping soon… another one not aging well
9. The B-52's - Love Shack: a victim of overkill
10. Strong Bad - Fisheye Lens: not a big fan of this one

Thanks!

1. Pixies - Debaser: Fantastic opener. I luckily got to see them perform the whole album live when Kim was still in the band.
2. The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??: Nice song uplifting and a bit depressing but in a beautiful way (if that makes sense)
3. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody: good song but grossly overplayed. There are so many OTHER really good songs by Queen but this track and it’s popularity tends to overshadow them.
4. Tricky - Black Steel: Great reimagining of a solid PE track. Tricky started out with so much promise… but entered a steady decline after his first album.
5. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street: Love that sax! The Foo Fighters version is awesome as well!
6. Chvrches - Leave a Trace: Pretty good. I think dream pop has hit its brief peak a while back and I haven’t listened to this band or song so much recently.
7. The B-52's - Love Shack: Camp as all hell. I used to like two tracks by this band when I was 10 - this one and Roam. Time has moved on…
8. Kanye West - Black Skinhead: I’ve never really been that into Kanye. Don’t know what else to say really.
9. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago: Never been a fan of this guy. I have a love / hate thing for Singer songwriter types…
10. Strong Bad - Fisheye Lens: not a big fan of this one

Extremely good list by virtue of selecting mostly classic tracks, as well as a context-less Homestar Runner bit.

The B-52's - Love Shack - 10 (My front-runner favourite. My comment is basically the same as Madzong except with the fact that I still love both this and Roam)
Sufjan Stevens - Chicago - 10 (It's Chicago, it's a banger, love this track)
Kanye West - Black Skinhead - 9 (My favourite Kanye track, it goes god damn hard)
Pixies - Debaser - 9 (My favourite Pixies track for similar reasons)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 8 (I used to adore this song, but my friends had a phase of singing it a lot over the past few years and ran it into the ground for me. It's still recovering in my view)
Tricky - Black Steel - 8 (First listen, into it, sounds great. Making a note to listen to Maxinquaye)
The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?? - 8 (Has been a grower for a while, might keep improving in future)
Chvrches - Leave a Trace - 7 (Not the biggest fan of Chi-vur-ches [my pronounciation] but I quite liked this track!)
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street - 7 (A bit of a high ranking for what is a fantastic sax solo with a disposable song around it, but the solo to me is just. that. good.)
Strong Bad - Fisheye Lens - 3 (I personally don't care for the sketch or song, but I also don't have nostalgia for it because it's from 2014 and I forgot about Homestar Runner's existence during that time)

Yeah it was pretty sweet! Great concert - all of Doolittle plus they played some other hits/fan faves e.g Where Is My Mind? Plus all the B-Sides from this era. Loved it when Dave sang La La Love You! You could tell they didn’t like each other very much at this point (there was a doco out around this time and there are so many scenes where you can tell they just can’t relate too each other well. I wasn’t surprised when Kim left soon afterwards - you could almost feel the tension between her and Frank Black). I did love how Kim shouted ‘B-Side!!!’ Each time before they played one though!

Sorry, I just realized I hadn't voted for your list !

But neither have you !

Here is mine, quite an excellent list indeed, even though full of classics

1. Pixies - Debaser. Fabulous opening indeed, from one of my desert island discs.
2. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
3. Tricky - Black Steel - Maxinquaye is just amazing. This song is awesome and in my top 1000
4.Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
5.Kanye West - Black Skinhead
6.The B-52's - Love Shack
7.The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??
8.Chvrches - Leave a Trace - I never got into much of Chvrches. Although their last album, being a bit more of a rocker, is much better than this type of song
9. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street. Eek that sax solo is just too much.
10. Strong Bad - Fisheye Lens - Yeah, that's quite bad.

I am sorry it took me so long to participate? Now that I am actively involved in this thread, will my playlist be considered?
