Here we go:

Tricky - Evolution Revolution Love - 9 (Between this and last week I have been impressed with Tricky, who I had not listened to really at all before.)
Jace Everett - Bad Things - 8 (Oh, right, the True Blood theme song. This is very cheesy and also something I like unfortunately)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bicycle Song - 7 (*Anthony Kiedis voice* I want to ride my bi-ci-cle, I want to ride my bike...)
The Church - Under The Milky Way - 7 (Good, never quite clicked with the chorus but the rest is solid)
Alice Cooper - Feed My Frankenstein - 7 (This is basically a Weird Al song, so silly it kind of becomes charming to me?).
The Cars - Strap Me In - 6 (Just fine, lacks the drive [forgive the pun] I look for in their songs)
Guns N’ Roses - Better - 6 (Overall enjoyable, kinda loses its way in the middle but gets back on track eventually)
Whitesnake - Still Of The Night - 5 (This would be much better if it was about half as long.)
DJ Shadow - Organ Donor - 4 (Lots of build up to something cool happening for like 5 seconds)
Dr. Octagon - Bear Witness - 3 (Lots of build up but nothing happens)

1. The Church - Under The Milky Way: #2264 on my all-time list, clear favorite for me here
2. Tricky - Evolution Revolution Love: solid track
3. DJ Shadow - Organ Donor: short but sweet
4. Whitesnake - Still Of The Night: has aged surprisingly well (wouldn't have guessed that)
5. Dr. Octagon - Bear Witness: under-rated artist, good song
6. Guns N’ Roses - Better: nothing striking I'm afraid… just typical GnR
7. Alice Cooper - Feed My Frankenstein: sub-par Cooper, but true to his legacy
8. The Cars - Strap Me In: weak, dated effort
9. Jace Everett - Bad Things: tainted by True Blood
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bicycle Song: not much of a RHCP fan, feels like they're trying too hard here

Thanks!

Tricky - Evolution Revolution Love (8.5) - Great number from an underrated album, overshadowed by Maxinquaye. But I love the way Tricky manages to be always menacing whilst keeping a fantastic melody.
DJ Shadow - Organ Donor (8) Great little number from Shadow. The organ/keyboard melody is catchy enough to warrant your attention and then the beats storm in. A highlight of ...Endtroducing
The Church - Under The Milky Way (7.5) - Classic song, slightly overplayed, slightly mushy, but still plenty of beauty.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bicycle Song (7) - Nifty, funny little song. Not listened much to the Peppers subsequent albums to Blood Sugar Sex Magik, maybe I should.
The Cars - Strap Me In (7) - The Cars seem to always delivery basic, melodic pop rock. Good hooks, that's what matters. And they are plentiful in this song
Alice Cooper - Feed My Frankenstein (6) - I get to like Alice a little bit more every time I listen to them. Maybe it's the imagery that didn't connect, but let's face it - he rocks hard.
Dr. Octagon - Bear Witness (6) - Haven't listened much of Octagon, but on this song, it's unlikely to be the case in the near future. By no means is it bad, it just doesn't wow me.
Whitesnake - Still Of The Night (5) Almost a carbon copy of Led Zeppelin's 70s hard rock, but with a touch of glam. Not a fan of long shredding guitar solos. Indeed, the song is way too long.
Guns N’ Roses - Better (5) Like Safetycat, they seem to be directionless in the middle of the song but soon catch up with the song. Axl's voice is still very much grating.
Jace Everett - Bad Things (5). Not special musically, the lyrics are quite cringy...

1. Tricky - Evolution Revolution Love: My Sunday Morning jam which I used to play back when I worked in a record store
2. The Church - Under The Milky Way: Some eighties nostalgia. Love this track since I first heard the Strawpeople cover. (Those bagpipes though… :)
3. Dr. Octagon - Bear Witness: My driving home jam which I played incessantly after a long day at the record store. Fell in love with this entire album - however this track is not indicative of the rest of the album as it lacks Kool Keith’s rapping
4. DJ Shadow - Organ Donor: Another late night driving home song - this song and the remix are classic favs for me
5. Alice Cooper - Feed My Frankenstein: The first Cooper track I ever heard as a kid thanks to the Wayne’s World OST that my family used to play on repeat in the family car cassette deck!
6. The Cars - Strap Me In: The sound of the 80’s. I reckon this band epitomises the 80’s - the sound, fashion, music videos. I love this band but this is a minor song in their catalog.
7. Jace Everett - Bad Things: good song but I’ve heard it too many times due to watching the show…
8. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bicycle Song: not so familiar with this track but it makes me wonder what the unreleased album would have sounded like
9. Whitesnake - Still Of The Night. Okay track
10. Guns N’ Roses - Better: it’s alright bug could be better… (sorry)

Saint Etienne | You're In a Bad Way (8) - Classic St Etienne track. I'm much more into their poppier stuff, but this does nicely
Samuel Barber | Adagio for Strings (7). Very similar, in modern terms, to Rob Dougan's Clubbed to Death, with beats added. It's clearly an influence if not an outright copy.
Concrete Blonde | Happy Birthday (7) Nice little upbeat number
Edward Elgar | Cello Concerto: I. Adagio – Moderato (6) More strings ! Decent, but no match to the Adagio.
Badfinger | Baby Blue (6) - Classic power pop rock from the seventies. Hasn't aged badly, quite nice to hear again.
Ella Fitzgerald | Mack the Knife (6). Love the start of the song, very jazzy & upbeat. Not so keen at the end where she tries to emulate Louis Armstrong.
Sandy Denny | Listen Listen (5). Of course, this is very Fairport Convention oriented, but it's also rather average, save Denny's voice.
Stevie Wonder | Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer (5). I've got a soft spot for Wonder in general, although I stick to his more popular albums. This song doesn't really have a hook and garners points thanks to his voice. But more strings :)
Nico | Frozen Warnings (4) Frozen Warnings, frozen German voice. She's very very monotone. Sometimes it works, not here
Randy Newman | I Think It's Going to Rain Today (4). And even more strings ! Not keen on this downbeat song, very forlorn and slow.

My list:
1. Samuel Barber | Adagio for Strings: #3734 on my all-time list
2. Ella Fitzgerald | Mack the Knife: #4209 on my all-time list; I often wonder whether the "flub" is authentic
3. Saint Etienne | You're In a Bad Way: #5173 on my all-time list
4. Nico | Frozen Warnings: #5183 on my all-time list
5. Edward Elgar | Cello Concerto: I. Adagio – Moderato: Really like this - had never heard it but will add to the charts
6. Concrete Blonde | Happy Birthday: 6-8 are a virtual 3-way tie
7. Badfinger | Baby Blue: good song
8. Stevie Wonder | Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer: Stevie belts it out like only he can
9. Randy Newman | I Think It's Going to Rain Today: lower tier Newman? Still authentic
10. Sandy Denny | Listen Listen: even in the 10 spot, not a bad song at all!

Thanks!

Well, a fantastic group here, all in my Top 10,000 that I have been slogging away at.

1. Samuel Barber | Adagio for Strings - AT #439
2. Edward Elgar | Cello Concerto: I. Adagio – Moderato - AT #979

These first two are classical standards at this point, both from the first half of the 20th century, and examples of how 20th century classical could be astonishingly great while not always pushing into modernism. (Though trust me, I do love my modernism.) Jacqueline du Pre's performance on the latter concerto made her a 60s icon of classical music.

3. Badfinger | Baby Blue - AT #1180

My favorite Badfinger track, power pop at it's most enjoyable/singalong.

4. Nico | Frozen Warnings - AT #1484

The opposite of singalong for sure, this is from Nico's masterful The Marble Index. The title pretty much sums up the feel.

5. Concrete Blonde | Happy Birthday - AT #2212

Super-catchy earlier track by this semi-forgotten late-80s/early-90s band.

6. Stevie Wonder | Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer - AT #2827

Stevie in 1971, getting prepped for his incredible 5-year stretch. This is some sorta singing here.

7. Randy Newman | I Think It's Going to Rain Today - AT #3520

Very early Randy Newman, one of those evergreen melodies that feels like a modern standard, even though the song isn't so well-known these days.

8. Saint Etienne | You're In a Bad Way - AT #4023

I feel terrible having this as low as 8! But this is a tough group. SUPER poppy girl group throwback filtered through that early-90s Saint Etienne feel, and one of several highlights from a fantastic album.

9. Ella Fitzgerald | Mack the Knife - AT ~#5100

Ella having a great time, love the loose feel of this live version.

10. Sandy Denny | Listen Listen - AT ~#6000

Probably my favorite of her solo, of course another gorgeous vocal performance.

The Shuffle Game - S3 - Recruiting !!!

Post by spiritualized »

And we're off for a third season.
If less than 6 players, we'll fold. But please join to carry on this great discovery game !

I'll start with my list

Rollerskate Skinny - Bella (from Shoulder Voices - 1993) - Blimey the random generator loves this band. 20,000 odd songs and it picks them again ?
The Beatles - A Day In The Life (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 1967)... Wow, talk about a classic pick.
The Beatles - I'll Be Back (A Hard Day's Night - 1964)... I promise, this is totally random.
R.E.M. - Fall On Me (Lifes Rich Pageant - 1986)
Limp Bizkit - 9 Teen 90 Nine (Significant Other - 1999). OK, this one will be last !
Metronomy - Corinne (The English Riviera -2011)
Lisa Germano - A Guy Like You (Geek The Girl - 1994)
Linkin Park - One Step Closer (Hybrid Theory - 2000)... No, I don't listen to THAT MUCH Nu Metal.

A bunch of album tracks from big names, the song All Too Well, part of the Battlestar Galactica score... and songs by Jet and James Blunt. Some decent variety there!

Grimes - Pin - Excellent example of how to mix electronic, danceable music and indie-style guitars. Poppy is doing pretty much the same thing. The echo on the voice can be a bit tiring at times, but this is good stuff.

Nas - Represent - Good East Coast hip hop, from a classic album

Tricky - You Don't - I actually prefer Tricky's Maxinquaye to Massive Attack's debut. Better beats, more menacing, less soul-infused music.

Prince - Let's Go Crazy - I don't like Prince much. But if I have to listen to him, this isn't a bad choice. The song hasn't aged much, which shows its quality to start with.

Massive Attack - Be Thankful for What You've Got - Not the best song on this otherwise fine album

The Beatles - Dizzy Miss Lizzy A bit better than Matchbox, but I prefer later day Beatles

The Beatles - The End - I don't think I listened to this a lot, in spite of being the Beatles. Not a great song of theirs.

The Beatles - Matchbox - The Fab Four's attempt at honky tonk ? Not their best. The voices are not in sync at times, I don't know if it's intentional ?

Grimes - Darkseid - This is where Grimes' voice is grating. Far worse quality than her other track in this list. But the beats are OK

Sly and the Family Stone - Poet - Never been fond of Sly. I don't understand the acclaim.

Prince - Let's Go Crazy - I came to Prince late but have grown to really like this song
Tricky - You Don't - I have always loved Tricky, especially his debut album (which is essential listening and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet heard it)
The Beatles - The End - A nice ending to their final recorded album
The Beatles - Matchbox - OK song
The Beatles - Dizzy Miss Lizzy - OK song
Massive Attack - Be Thankful for What You've Got - My least favourite song on Blue Lines
Nas - Represent - OK song
Grimes - Pin - Not the biggest fan of Grimes
Grimes - Darkseid - Not the biggest fan of Grimes
Sly and the Family Stone - Poet - Never really got into Sly. This track doesn't grab me much either.

Tricky - You Don't 8

Sly & the Family Stone - Poet 7 The best song here to my ears in terms of the sound it's going for but not fully developed as an independent entity from its album.

Nas - Represent 6 UO: God's Son, Stillmatic and King's Disease II hit harder than Illmatic.

Massive Attack - Be Thankful for What You've Got 6
Grimes feat. 潘PAN - Darkseid 5
The Beatles - Matchbox 5
The Beatles - Dizzy Miss Lizzy 4
Grimes - Pin 4
The Beatles - The End 4
Prince - Let's Go Crazy 3

Looks like I'm flipping mileswide's list upside-down...

1. The Beatles - The End: in a twist that may summon the Beast, #666 on my all-time list (as part of the Medley)
2. Prince - Let's Go Crazy: #6320 on my all-time list
3. Grimes - Pin: this album is aging well
4. The Beatles - Dizzy Miss Lizzy: sweet cover
5. Grimes - Darkseid: fairly average Grimes song
6. The Beatles - Matchbox: lesser Beatles is still above average
7. Massive Attack - Be Thankful for What You've Got: nice track
8. Sly and the Family Stone - Poet: S&TFS hit or miss for me; this has a great groove, but not much else
9. Tricky - You Don't: okay
10. Nas - Represent: not for me

Thanks!

I'd say there's one track that stands head and shoulders above the rest this week. Not very good Beatles selections; truthfully, I've never really been a big fan of the Abbey Road medley.

1. The Beatles - A Day In The Life (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 1967)

Classic Beatles at their best.

2. Primal Scream - Shoot Speed / Kill Light (XTRMNTR - 2000)

A noisy track from the Youth. Love it though. One of the best tracks on the album.

3. R.E.M. - Fall On Me (Lifes Rich Pageant - 1986)

Classic REM - hard to fault really.

4. Yo La Tengo - Don't Say A Word (Hot Chicken #2) (Electr-o-Pura - 1995)

Good track from a great band.

5. The Beatles - I'll Be Back (A Hard Day's Night - 1964)

Okay early Beatles track but nothing special.

6. Lisa Germano - A Guy Like You (Geek The Girl - 1994)

As far as singer/songwriters go this is not too bad.

7. Metronomy - Corinne (The English Riviera -2011)

A strange sounding song but I’d like to hear more from this band that I’ve heard about but not spent much time listening to in the past.

8. Roller-skate Skinny - Bella (from Shoulder Voices - 1993)

9. Linkin Park - One Step Closer (Hybrid Theory - 2000)

Apart from the Deftones, I’m not a fan of nu metal in general. However, one of the worst bands with one of the worst frontperson/lyricist gets the bottom placing

1,000,000. Limp Bizkit - 9 Teen 90 Nine (Significant Other - 1999)

Yes I owned the first two albums when I was a teen back in the late 90’s. I still feel terrible about this and mention it to very few people in general. Sigh. My secret shame…

R.E.M. - Fall on Me 8 Twas ever to be thus :P

Rollerskate Skinny - Bella 8 The reason I like this eludes me but I'm not questioning it!

Primal Scream - Shoot Speed/Kill Light 7
The Beatles - A Day in the Life 7
Lisa Germano - A Guy like You 6
Yo La Tengo - Don't Say a Word (Hot Chicken #2) 6

Limp Bizkit - 9 Teen 90 Nine 6 It doesn't sound like the usual Fred Durst vocals (maybe Wes Borland?), therefore far more bearable.

Metronomy - Corinne 6
The Beatles - I'll Be Back 4
Linkin Park - One Step Closer 2
All I got inside is vacancy!

1. R.E.M. - Fall On Me (Lifes Rich Pageant - 1986): #304 on my all-time list; perhaps the quintessential R.E.M. song
2. The Beatles - A Day In The Life (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 1967): #481 on my all-time list
3. The Beatles - I'll Be Back (A Hard Day's Night - 1964): #1533 on my all-time list
4. Primal Scream - Shoot Speed / Kill Light (XTRMNTR - 2000): #6763 on my all-time list; had forgotten about this album
5. Yo La Tengo - Don't Say A Word (Hot Chicken #2) (Electr-o-Pura - 1995): another great YLT track - just so consistent, they are
6. Rollerskate Skinny - Bella (from Shoulder Voices - 1993): thanks to spiritualized, this album is on the "good" list… not one of my fave songs from it though
7. Metronomy - Corinne (The English Riviera -2011): pretty average track
8. Lisa Germano - A Guy Like You (Geek The Girl - 1994): ditto
9. Limp Bizkit - 9 Teen 90 Nine (Significant Other - 1999): yeah, I suppose there's not much to say here
10. Linkin Park - One Step Closer (Hybrid Theory - 2000): I really don't like this either

Thanks!

Coming into the list I expected a slightly different order, but this seems correct:

Primal Scream - Shoot Speed / Kill Light - 9 (I thought I didn't like this album much, but this song may make me revisit, it's fantastic)
R.E.M. - Fall On Me - 8 (Classic REM track but not one that's vibed strongly with me like some of their other work)
Yo La Tengo - Don't Say A Word (Hot Chicken #2) - 8 (Gorgeous. I can't understand what they're saying, I assume it's about chicken)
The Beatles - I'll Be Back - 7 (Yes I will put this random album track above A Day in the Life, my ears, my rules)
The Beatles - A Day In The Life - 7 (I know why this track is so well-acclaimed, and I respect it. Still only a 7 to listen to for me)
Rollerskate Skinny - Bella - 7 (Your continued promotion of Rollerskate Skinny has brought me some appreciation for this track at least)
Lisa Germano - A Guy Like You - 6 (Was going to be lower but after a couple of listens I'm getting this song. It's good.)
Metronomy - Corinne - 4 (The female vocal lifted this a bit, but overall it sounds like an uninspired Hot Chip track)
Linkin Park - One Step Closer - 3 (Listen, I really like a lot of Linkin Park, but this song is a bit cringy to look back on)
Limp Bizkit - 9 Teen 90 Nine - 2 (I unironically love Break Stuff, but that doesn't mean I like any of the rest of their catalogue, even one that sounds a bit too similar to it)
