What album surprises you that isn’t on AM?

Post by Holden »

I listened to Alice Coltrane’s Journey in Satchidananda today, and was shocked to find it isn’t even bubbling under on AM. I feel like it’s got a pretty big reputation, and I’ve seen it on several lists, even the new RS list. What’s an album that you think has a big reputation but isn’t on AM?

This is more meant to be about reputation then quality, I’m sure we all have a couple albums we love but not a lot of people know about, but that’s not really what this thread is about.

I must’ve completely misjudged their staying power but I was always surprised that a few albums from the last decade didn’t even appear in the Bubbling Under sections despite what seemed to be rapturous praise (from a sizeable amount of publications) when they came out:

Napalm Death - Apex Predator
Ghostface Killah - Apollo Kids
Bomb the Music Industry! - Vacation

I guess ultimately if they don’t end up on end-of-year or end-of-decade lists they probably won’t show up on AM.

The Pandora’s- It About Time
Gore Gore Girls- Get the Gore
Cults- ST
Trashcan Sinatras- Cake
The Duke Spirit- Neptune
Catherine Wheel- Chrome
Lush- Split
Shonen Knife- Let’s Knife
Tillly and the Wall- We Love Children and/or o
Delays- Faded Ocean Glamour
The Frames- Fitzcarraldo
The Buck Brothers- Me
Rooney- ST
Her Space Holiday- the Young Machines
Gomez- Split the Difference
Ladytron- Witching Hour
Camera Obscura- Underachievers Please Try Harder
Mull Historical Society- Us
Tori Amos- Boys for Pele
Jem- Finally Woken (got unfairly bashed for the frequent Beth Orton comparisons IMO)
Kate Bush- The Red Shoes (which I thought was so much better than it’s predecessor in every way, shape and form. I feel that it took so long to be released and it being released in ‘93 when everyone was already enamored with other women she influenced like Tori, Björk and Sinead plus Siouxies string of comeback singles, albums and tours. Than that it was so guest musician friendly might have turned critics off with the authenticity or whatever)

Dressy Bessy- ST
Sort of pleasantly surprised to see Apples in Stereo at least bubbling with this update but unless you’re named Neutral Milk Hotel I guess the Elephant 6 ensemble doesn’t get much love here and even Of Montreal took quite some time to finally chart after all the years they’d been together.

Liz Phairs whitecholatespaceegg never fails no matter the update to come in dead last in the bubblers for 1998.
Supergrass’ Life on Other Planets never “Phairs” much better.

Ash’s Free All Angels blew the overrated 1977 out of the water but maybe cause it was such a smash hit and their most popular by far?

Denmark never got much love here for their greats like Mew and the Raveonettes)

Think the Long Blonde’s Someone to Drive….masterpiece was also bubbling under but it deserved better.

Hoping Wolf Alice FINALLY charts this time around with their new release.

This is just off top of my head…..well Spotify and vlc player playlist….so I’m admitting gonna be editing all night when I think of who I left off.

I think you might be talking about The Red Shoes, which came out in 1993. The Dreaming, which is from 1982, is ranked #1305.

Brand New, American Football, and Death From Above 1979 all have albums on this website, but not the albums you'd expect (The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, American Football (first album), and You're a Woman I'm a Machine).

I figure this is because all 3 are somewhat "cult" bands who were ignored by critics at the peak of their influence, released comeback albums that were acclaimed due to a critical re-evaluation of the band's work, but never had that re-evaluation extend to the work that's actually loved by their fans, because of the fact that the window for the type of lists that would've contained those albums (typically EOY lists) had come and gone.

Have a Nice Life also used to fall victim to this, but it appears that in the past year or two their 2008 album Deathconsciousness (which is far more beloved in music communities than their 2014 album) has been added to AM.

Thanks for the correction! I had written all this down before and went to look at my Spotify playlist to look to see what should be listed. When I got back to this site, all I had written had been erased :angry-banghead: so I had to start all over again so I knew I probably made a lot of mistakes purely out of frustration.

Anyway up until a recent update I think Sensual World even outranked the Dreaming which I thought was absolutely insane but luckily critics have come to their senses. Ive still seen Sensual World listed over the Dreaming or higher in recent lists. Seriously if you it ranked higher you must be the one who’s clearly high.

Don't understand how this album is not there. Seven of the 12 tracks were hit singles eventually, and 2 other tracks are well known flip sides.

If the Beta Band has the Three EPs Lush’s Gala should definitely be included as well and I’ve heard this from people that aren’t even as big on Lush as I am.

I do prefer Ptah, The El Daoud by her but that is startling to see neither's on AM.

This. I'm hoping more that the buzz about the upcoming album will help bump Vision of a Life up from bubbling under. You're right that Free All Angels should be on AM but I'd be lying if I said I was surprised it's not listed- Ash just don't strike me as a band who made waves in American critical circles at least, either at the time or since.

My shocks:
- Song to a Seagull wasn't exactly my favourite in last week's MAA but I didn't foresee it being the only one of Joni Mitchell's first 8 albums to miss the top 3000.
- Given the number of ranked albums whose reputation seems to rely heavily on one or two famous tracks, I expected Showcase by Patsy Cline to make it on the basis of Crazy and I Fall to Pieces alone.
- Dance to the Music saw Sly and the Family Stone's Larry Graham practically invent slap bass. You'd think that legacy and the LP's quality would count for something, even if they would release better albums later on.
- James Brown might not be seen as an albums artist, so, compared to other omissions, I can't say I fell off my chair in amazement but I envisioned Get up offa That Thing to be BU and its title track to be in the top 10K.
All I got inside is vacancy!
