Albums and Songs of 1963 Polls

Post by Holden »

1963

AM Links: Albums, Songs

Next up is 1963! I will be tallying the albums, and Schüttelbirne will be tallying the songs. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

Rank Points
1	50
2	45
3	40
4	36
5	32
6	28
7	25
8	22
9	19
10	16
11	14
12	13
13	12
14	11
15	10
16	9
17	8
18	7
19	6
20	5
The deadline to vote is midnight (UTC aka Forum Time) on May 31st.

Compilations are not allowed. If you're unsure about a release date, consult RateYourMusic.com and AcclaimedMusic.net.

Thanks to Listyguy for running last year's 1970s poll from which I have stolen pretty much this whole intro and format.

I thought about pushing my top 2 down a notch because they will surely get in, but since I doubt people will vote for Giuffre or Lasha I doubt it would be effective.

To that wicked and cruel man
That was the only medicine to make him listen
And is so calypso began

I had this as 1951, but cannot now find a justification for that, but it was released on "An Evening with" in 1959 in the UK on Tempo Records (TAP 23).

This is the version I have as 1963:

I think "An Evening With" is a live album. Yes, it is, recorded in 1956 and released in 1959, but it's not this version of the song.

Here's the one from 1951. Different recording than the one I listed in 1963, which was recorded a month after this 1951 French release.

I think this one below is the 1951 release:

This hadn't even been written in 1963. It was released two years later on Bringing It All Back Home. I moved the rest up.

I think the album is from 1964, but that doesn't really matter. I don't think I can count "II B.S." because it had been released before (on 1957's The Clown). He just retitled it from "Haitian Fight Song".

Huh, I don't think I ever listened to "Haitian Fight Song" so good catch! You can just remove that and move the rest up if you'd like, so it sounds like Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus isn't eligible either?

The album should definitely be eligible. It's not a compilation, it's an album of new recordings of material he had previously recorded and released while he was on other labels.
The only songs eligible are "Mood Indigo" (a new recording) and "Hora Decubitus" (a version of "E's Flat, Ah's Flat Too" from Blues & Roots (1960)).

Figuring out rankings this month was HARD. I'm not looking forward to making decisions on the latter half of the 60s.

If a song has an asterisk next to it then I attribute my discovery of it to AMF...either the actual charts or a Forum interaction. Don't assume a relatively low placement (if the song is one you champion) is indicative of me having lukewarm feelings for it. It generally takes me a couple years to get in enough plays to start to get a handle on how I regard "new" music. And if it's first year it's always a BU (Bubbling Under)

BU | Loretta Lynn | Before I'm Over You |
BU | Mose Allison | Eyesight to the Blind |
BU | Bob Dylan | Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance |
BU | Lee Hazlewood | I Guess It's Love |
BU | The Impressions | I'm the One Who Loves You | *
BU | The Impressions | Never Let Me Do |
BU | Sam Cooke | Send Me Some Lovin' |
BU | Lord Kitchener | The Road | *
BU | Bob Dylan | Talkin' World War III Blues |
BU | Darlene Love | A Fine Fine Boy |
BU | Claude Nougaro | Cécile, ma fille |
BU | Jackie Wilson | Baby Workout |
BU | Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas | Bad to Me |
BU | Antônio Carlos Jobim | Insensatez | *
BU | Ben E. King | I (Who Have Nothing) | *
177 | Robert Maxwell | Shangri-La |
176 | The Kingsmen Quartet | This is a Mean World (live at National Quartet Convention) |
175 | Rick Nelson | String Along |
174 | Johnny Mathis | What Will My Mary Say? |
173 | Sunny and the Sunglows | Talk to Me |

Okay, the Rockin' Rebels was much earlier, like 1960 on original release. The 2 Beatles are both sides of a 1962 single. The Marvelettes was on a 1962 album and the Sam Cooke is from late 1957.

Thanks Hymie.

This site lists the Rebels as 1962 confusingly. Both RYM and Discogs show the Marlee label as 1960.

2 of the others appear to be outright mistakes on my part.

The Cooke track is from the MR. SOUL album and is a much different version than the 1957 Keen cut but I will just delete that because honestly the Keen version is superior.

I'll edit my post, Holden, and let you know.

I think "Egyptian Sumba" is shit myself. It's another one of those things like "Miserlou" that bombed when it was current but caught on later with younger people. I think it's rated highly on RYM.

I inexplicably forgot about Jackie McLean's Let Freedom Ring and Jazz Waltz by Shorty Rogers & His Giants, so I've edited my ballot to make them my new numbers 8 and 9 respectively.
All I got inside is vacancy!
