Crikey, I find it hard to imagine anyone listening to that in 2021 and getting pleasure from it. I feel dirty just listening to it once!

When has this thread turned into: "Let's share racist coon songs and discuss which songs about about domestic violence are the most horrible"?

Just asking...

I'm always in for Beach Boys harmonies. They did it better elsewhere, but this is still fine.

I'm being generous, because I can't deny that if it was just the music with the same voice singing different lyrics I would have liked it. As it is though, I don't have time for a guy insulting, demeaning and even violently threatening his wife simply because she talks. You could say that this is light-hearted or that the lyrics are comedy, but that makes it only worse. Domestic violence isn't a good joke. Not now, not in 1953 and not ever.
For those reasons and more, I give Honey Hush a 1. I felt weird hearing it in that 1001 Songs book and I still don't like it.

If this was true you wouldn't be giving a song a 1 just because of the words.

OK my 2p, although I'm not particularly impressed at how this became a discussion about people rather than the music. I thought Rob, all credit to you, kept it cool and "unpersonal" in spite of the attacks.
I liked the song (ish). The lyrics are really quite cringy and on the wrong side of patriarchal. But I can't help myself in thinking that there are zillions of rappers out there who were sending the same disrespectful message to women, not so long ago.
It's a good thing that it's become less and less acceptable. But I also appreciate that it's difficult to judge historical societal values with today's eyes.

A spanking when I was a kid was not unusual, whereas today, it's child abuse

Aww, I wanted to chime in with my thoughts on the matter! I'll restrict myself to ratings though:

Barbara Manning - Smoking Her Wings 8
Wild Beasts - All the King's Men 4
Boyz II Men - Water Runs Dry 3
Big Joe Turner - Honey Hush 7 The Johnny Burnette Trio's version would earn a 9 off me, the latter is presently #675 on my AT draft
Danny & the Champions of the World – (Never Stop Building) That Old Space Rocket 5
The Beach Boys - Hawaii 4

They are both tens for me, but I agree the Burnette Trio version is better. It's in my top 10 of all time.

Finally some common ground in this thread!

I found the JBT rendition after Elvis Costello's take of it on Almost Blue where he also does Why Don't You Love Me like You Used to Do by Hank Williams but in a rock & roll/rockabilly style.

I'd recommend both EC tracks if you don't already know his versions as I know you like that kind of music and it helped me embrace some songs within the genre.

Okay, just listened to them. I don't like "Why Don't You Love Me" at all by Costello. He sucked all of the greatness out of that song by turning it into a very fast punk record, and He's nowhere hear Hank Williams as a singer. "Honey Hush" is even worse. No wonder I never heard them before. If they were good they would have been shown to me by people who like what I like and are on top of remakes of our stuff.

I do like his live version of "Penny Lane" from the White House even better than the Beatles version.

The Paul McCartney take on "Honey Hush" is miles better than the Costello version IMO. He's actually trying to sound like the Burnette version.

This sounds genuinely bad to me, the harmonies are fine but both the high pitched "Hawa-ee" and I'm guessing Mike Love's lead vocal on the verses both sound really off.

Just listened to Johnny Burnette's "Honey Hush," that was pretty cool. It seems to belong in what is practically a mini-genre like, "Don't come near me, man, I'm on edge."

I listened to way too many of the early Beach Boys albums (though I did bump into an album cut of "Misirlou" because of that, which was sort of amusing).

One of the greatest 2 sided singles ever, with this on the flip:

They got that fuzz guitar sound by accident, there was a loose tube in the amp.

I had to listen to this album to get through all the yearly top 10 albums from the '80s on the main site. The 1985 year was kind of disappointing; but this was the highlight of the Two Wheels Good album.

My experience with Prefab Sprout hasn't been too great, but this is an exception. Perhaps because the sophisti-pop stayed at home and we get an interesting mix between jangle pop and country, with irresistible guitars.

Discovered the band in the 80's poll two years back and have come to really like them. This song is one of their best (the entire first half of Steve McQueen is brilliant, really).

Considering there are 59 Todd Rundgren songs available for this game (I think all courtesy of Henry) it is surprising that he only makes his Biggest Fan debut today (under a pseudonym).

This song would have scored a 7 if it didn't decide to repeat the chorus over and over again for the whole second half. It's an infectious song, but it is at least a minute too long.
