MCCh 2021 (07) April 30

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2021 (update April 30)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 33 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Dansende Beren (New this year thanks to Chilton's proposal); Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash; DIY; God Is In The Tv; Load And Quiet; Music OMH; NME; The Guardian; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; Beats Per Minute; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture; Under The Radar

Highlights: Rob makes the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, etc…

Kind of a disappointing two weeks. Only one new new album in the top 40, all the others have been bubbling under and entered or reentered

This rounds up April, as Holden says mostly with albums that are unlikely to stick around until the final update in December. But who knows, perhaps they are still gems worth discovering. You can check their highlights on the playlist below:

Between you and me, I'm kind of happy Fearless fell of. After the maturity of the Swift's two albums from 2020 it is almost embarrassing to hear her sing precocious teenager songs again. Not that there is no place for such songs, but retreading that seems a waste of energy for an artist. I know the reason she did this, but they are not interesting for me as a listener.

At the very least, this period’s sole addition to the Top 40 is quite interesting. I enjoyed Ultrapop quite a bit and recommend it.

Wow! Post punk revival is quickly replacing forming your indie band in Brooklyn as the big fad this time around. Only a matter of time before the two connect and every other post punk band is forming in Brooklyn.

London steadily becoming the new Brooklyn in that respect. The post punk pipe looks to have well and truly burst over there. And it's spreading. Beside the bands above, black midi, Squid and who knows who else are going to take this topic's list by storm in no time.
Scientists are working as we speak to determine that people feeling post punky is actually a post Brexit post Covid complication. And the vaccines don't seem to prevent that.
Can't wait for the Mojo and Uncut EOY lists. They'll be hilarious. Mine probably too.

Well they’re getting to be so common you’d think Post cereal would either sponsor them or come up with their own brand dedicated to your faves, like Post Punkios lol! I’d imagine their mascot would look similar to Count Chocula or something.

Not big on trends but Brooklyn, post punk revival etc, at least we’re getting actual rock bands back again. May not be original but if it’s memorable and catches your ear, guess there’s no need to complain. It’s great that acts in their 40s, 50s and 60s are still putting out great material but it’s one thing when they were a old enough to actually remember the first wave of post punk. Nice to see newer, young musicians learning from the OGs and interpreting their own style in the process.

Squid and Iceage albums that came out today to critical acclaim haven't even hit the list yet! Squid seems like a certain T10 debut for the next edition.

It's like Interpol sold those 200 couches and everyone who bought one formed a band.

Most likely Squid, since the other two are just being released today. I'm sure all will have high debuts, though.

I wonder whether Squid's name is a nod to Trout Mask Replica ("A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast 'n' bulbous - got me?").

I was thinking Vincent, actually. It’s got a ton of reviews already, (over 20 on Album of the Year) but maybe it won’t hit the top mark. All three will probably be top ten by the end of May, though.
