AMF: The Best Films of All-Time (2012) THE RESULTS

Post by Petri »

Ladies and gentlemen it is time to release

The best movies of all time by Acclaimed Music Forum

Before the countdown starts few words about voters and the presentation.
First I want to thank all who voted. There were 16 brave voters (in order of ballot sent): Pauldrach, whuntva, Gillingham, Schaefer.tk, Henrik, Moonbeam, Jirin, Michel, Charlie Driggs, Petri, Stephan, Miguel, Midaso, Romain, Harold and Greg.
824 different movies got points. The movie with most voters got 12 votes.

There are some sections in the presentation that need to be explained:
Biggest fans: If the movie is in someone’s top 25 he (unfortunately we have only men voters) is among the biggest fans.
TSPDT rank: The current They Shoot Pictures Don’t They -rank. ‘-‘ means not in top 1000
RYM rank: The current Rate Your Music rank. (One movie in our top 100 isn’t in the top 10 000)
AMF09 rank: The rank in our first best movies of all-time list (hosted by netjade). ‘-‘ means not in top 100.

And last before I start the countdown I would like to thank for Gillingham and Schaefer.tk for commenting the movies they voted. Hopefully many others will also comment during the countdown.

There were some of my true favorites and not so well known older movies at places #101-105 (including the highest ranked movie I haven’t seen in the whole list). So I must say I’m little disappointed they just missed top 100. Well at least A Beautiful Mind and Le goût des autres are huge surprises.

Wow, this list looks totally unpredictable!

Some trifles...

You might want to change numer to number.
I think you meant that one movie is outside RYM's top 5 000, as the RYM charts don't go further than that. In fact, there are 88 films from year 2000 in the top 5 000 and Le goût des autres is #93 from 2000, so it's just outside the top 5 000. (Still ridiculously underrated of course.)

That's all! ;)

Some early surprises. It reflects the fact that not a lot of voters participated. More surprises to come, I guess.

Sorry nicolas you just missed the deadline (which I extended over two months). But AAAARGH there are many of my favorites in your list that ended up outside the top 100. (including two of my three favorites that ended up at #101-105)

Only two votes for Smultronstället, I'm a bit disappointed by that. Hopefully the other big Bergmans will do better.

And I think it's nice that Barry Lyndon made the top 100, since it's not an obvious Kubrick pick.

Glad to see Wall-E crack the Top 100. I've seen many movies, so it's hard to imagine my favorite movie being about a talking robot. Just something moving in there, I guess.

Great stretch from 70 to 66. I wouldn't expect a film like A Separation to do better than a Lawrence of Arabia. Quite nice.

By the way, the numbering of No Country for Old Men and Eraserhead is not correct. Just so you know Petri.
Looking forward to the rest.

Only three votes for Shawshank, but at least this time it entered the top 100, almost the top 50.

Quote this if you're happy that Shawshank came ahead of 8 1/2. :D

Well at least Shawshank's position is way more realistic here than on IMDb. 8-)

Nice one-two there by the way, Greg.

Good start to the list, a lot of great films there.

The one thing I really don't get is the placement of the two Wilder films. Some Like It Hot and The Apartment put me off for their portrayal of women as defenseless imbeciles and then their moral condescension to those who would seek to obtain sex from them.

Hopefully the other two critically loved Wilder films, Sunset Blvd and Double Indemnity will place higher.

Great to see A Separation make the list.

It was the last time we did this that got me started watching tons of movies. Last time I had only seen like 20 on the final list. Now so far I've seen all but 5.

I was wondering about the low number of votes some films have. Fight Club only five? Didn't see that coming.
It says Once upon a Time in America had three votes, of which three are mentioned fans. I voted for the film as well, but it was outside the top 100 and now I remember only the first 100 films were counted. That probably explains the low number of votes for a film like Fight Club as well.

Fortunately there was still a Bergman in there. Persona is not my favorite, but it's still a very good and special film.

Yeah I counted only the top 100 votes. So your votes haven't been counted among the votes of Fight Club (#132) or Once Upon a time in America (#134). I am also glad that Bergman got his movie to the top 35 (Persona was my #126) and especially glad of the #31 spot of Festen (my #107).
After four decades of movie polls and with some hints of tastes of AM voters I ain't surprised at all that Fight Club got only 5 votes (actually #40 sounds pretty high to me). The movie is definitely great (and was one of my favorite US movies back in high school) and in my top 100 of its decade but not in top 100 of all-time.

Wow, a film in the top 25 I haven't seen yet (the first one of the top 100). I've had To Be or Not to Be on my to-see list for a while but I'll have to track that down soon!

Now that is an amazing run of films! What a great surprise with "To Be or Not to Be" in the top 25!

For a long while it seemed to me that I would never rate any films 10/10 again (because I had perhaps already seen the best ones and/or I only watch DVDs nowadays (no time for cinema)). But now I have suddenly seen three 10/10 films in a year. The other two are "Grave of the Fireflies" and "A Separation". Very nice to see all of them in this top 100!

To Be or Not to Be wasn't the highest ranked movie that wasn't in top 100 last time. In this group of five there's two another. And these movies are also magnificent.
The difference of points between #20 and #19 is huge (almost 50(!) points).

Well maybe not the best time to start the top 10. But anyway here's #10 and #9 (for you 1 guest :D ).

10. The Godfather: Part II (1974)

AMF09 rank: 7

Comments: The duality and similarity of senior and junior Corleone is perfectly realised. It took a De Niro and a Pacino to make it work that well. (Gillingham)

9. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

Comments: The most original and best realised film of the Dollars trilogy. And it has more sense of humour than Once upon a Time in the West. (Gillingham)

6. C'era una Volta il West (Once upon a Time in the West) (1966)

Director: Sergio Leone

Number of votes: 10
Biggest fans: Greg #2, Henrik #4, Romain #5, Gillingham #13
TSPDT rank: 63
RYM rank: 14

Comments: Is this still a western? Of course it is, but it's very different from the classic American westerns before Leone entered the scene. And I like his interpretation, a lot. (Gillingham)

Edit. Added #8

OK and here's the top 2 of The Best Films of All-Time by AM Forum. The candidates are same than last time and the order...

2. Apocalypse Now (1979)

[imgsize 600x360]https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/imag ... 9-kX1dPpJw[/imgsize]

Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Points: 521,71

Biggest fans: Gillingham #1, Michel #1, Petri #6, Romain #22, Midaso #24, Harold #25
TSPDT rank: 28
RYM rank: 5
AMF09 rank: 2

Comments: Incredible adaptation of an interesting book. Totally adapted to the state of war during the Vietnam war. Coppola made the story his own and it almost finished him and part of the crew. Highl rewatchable. (Gillingham)

1. Pulp Fiction (1994)

[imgsize 600x360]https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/imag ... n8jSPsqHa0[/imgsize]

Director: Quentin Tarantino
Points: 581,21
Country: USA
Number of votes: 11
Biggest fans: Midaso #3, Harold #7, Henrik #8, Romain #9, Petri #9, Gillingham #14, Charlie Driggs #19
TSPDT rank: 116
RYM rank: 2
AMF09 rank: 1

Comments: Pulp Fiction won (with a rather big margin) just like last time. Although I'm among the biggest fans I still somehow find it almost wrong that this movie is considered the best movie of all-time. It's definitely a five star masterpiece. It's also a modern classic in a sense of (probably) all the voters have been alive when it was released. It's pure entertaining but also smart. I guess I'm not the only one who has seen it (first time) as a teenager when taste of movies was about to devolope from straightforward Hollywood action to more challenging films. So it has a very special place in personal movie history and actually I'm glad it won.
Tarantino will be considered one of the most influental and important directors of popular movie of 90's and 00's. And Pulp Fiction will be treated his early masterpiece. Still I forecast that when people born in 00's have conquered the forums etc. Pulp Fiction won't win a movie poll at least by a mile. But tonight is time to celebrate the vicotry of PULP FICTION. :music-guitarred: Thanks everybody who participated or just accompanied the presentation.
