Last year SOS finished 128. So with results this year it's pretty sure will be in the next top 3000 update.

Nice to see that the top 3 is currently a close race. Should be interesting to see where this goes.

With the performance of Billy Woods, JPEGMAFIA, and a few others, it seems critics are catching up to the online music community on alt-rap.

Glad to see Caroline at #1, that project seemed destined for it after a strong run of singles over the previous two years.

Since the advent of the Poptimist era, say 2015-ish on - my personal favorite album each year almost always seems to land in the 11-15 zone - what a shock that this year my personal top 3 albums - 1) Anonhi 2) Lankum 3) Jessie Ware all seem destined to land in that range.

Have to be honest, surprised by all the PJ Harvey love this year - it's an interesting and at times very original album, which I guess explains it's high finish, but to my ears it's several notches below her top efforts.

Like the past few years I look at which albums are in the balance for AM, meaning albums that rank at 35-40, the current average cut-off points for a top 3000 spot:

35 | SZA | SOS
36 | Tomb Mold | The Enduring Spirit
37 | Paramore | This Is Why
38 | jaimie branch | Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))
39 | Feist | Multitudes
40 | The Coral | Sea of Mirrors

SZA is a weird one, being a 2022 release. No idea if it will rise or fall here. Otherwise the biggest surprise is Paramore, which I would have guessed to be a lock for placement, but apparently not. Never heard of Tomb Mold before.

For me the biggest shock is Janelle Monaè at 32. When it came out I was surprised that an artist of her caliber, whose latest release dominated the lists of it's year, released an album that caused absolutely no stir. It felt nobody was talking about it at all. Not even bad enough to garner comments on it, but it definitely wasn't beloved. But every year there are at least one or two releases by artists of her stature who release a record with little to no love or hype that seem to make lists almost by default and this is her year I guess. However, by now it could actually make the top 3000 on AM, which seems off.
I say all this without having heard the album myself.

Hanging by a threat for AM top 3000 inclusion:

35 | 100 gecs | 10,000 gecs
36 | Everything But the Girl | Fuse
37 | Water From Your Eyes | Everyone's Crushed
38 | Corinne Bailey Rae | Black Rainbows
39 | Queens of the Stone Age | In Times New Roman…
40 | Troye Sivan | Something to Give Each Other

A completely different list than last week; that's rare. Interestingly, my main comments don't go anymore. Janelle Monaè is now below this group and Paramore has risen.

Surprised at the bad showing of CMAT. Last year I thought is was just because it was her debut that it didn't get the full-on love, but this year she seemed to be more known and appreciated.

And also as is traditional critics don't have a clue what to do with the huge King Gizzard output.

Agree with CMAT, one of the best sophomore efforts of recent time. Not sure why Janelle didn't get as much love, the lyrics are a bit more 'silly' than Dirty Computer, maybe?

I suspect Roisin Murphy would have fared much better had her disappointing comments not been made public.

Especially confounding since Noname's controversy is directly part of the music. Suspicious indeed...

Noname was affected to some extent, my betting is she'd be about ten places higher now if not for the Jay Electronica feature. But yeah, Roisin Murphy has been blackballed basically for putting her foot in it big time, it's been a much bigger effect (this isn't really sympathy for Roisin Murphy, I didn't agree with her comments at all, just an observation that as usual the music media displays little consistency in who gets shunned and who doesn't).

On Roisin - no - feels like it's landing right about where it should - not a top 50 album regardless of what she said and not on same quality level of That! Feels! Good!, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, Fuse, or Romy, the other big electro-pop/disco-y albums in the top-50.

On Nomame - who knows - but I agree with your sentiment and personally find her politics off-putting.

There's a difference between fighting the good fight/championing the cause of the disadvantaged/marginalized and just toxically calling to burn the whole thing down, and she doesn't grasp that difference.

I really don’t like this cancel culture and especially with Roisin’s situation in which I personally think it’s ridiculous that she’s been pulled up by the current internet lynch mob for basically having a concerning opion……..I’m sure in 10 years it will be as irrelevant as when the Beatles got cancelled after Lennons god remarks.
But the cancel is working…….its a great album and would of been easily a top 20 record of the year I believe in the final results

Roisin Machine only landed at #21 for 2020; even if Hit Parade is on the same level quality wise, it doesn't feel like much of a breakthrough comparatively. I'm sure the controversy dropped her a few spots, but I think people are overstating where it would have otherwise landed. No way it breaks the top 20 if Roisin Machine couldn't.

Disagree, I think this was clearly the one they were hyping up as her best yet (Pitchfork gave her Best New Track twice), I think they were ready to go all-in on crowning it one of the best of the year until her online comments surfaced. The only comparable scenario I know in recent years is Science Fiction by Brand New which got raves and the Jesse Lacey accusations detonated all that

Hanging on the balance this Christmas:

35 | SZA | SOS
36 | Ratboys | The Window
37 | The Rolling Stones | Hackney Diamonds
38 | Queens of the Stone Age | In Times New Roman…
39 | Róisín Murphy | Hit Parade
40 | The National | First Two Pages of Frankenstein

Not much overlap again, although Queens of the Stone Age were there last time. The Rolling Stones are rising, which is interesting. SZA is also a curious case here. Based on comments many here won't like to see Hit Parade here.

Thank you very much for the update although Maps deserves the Top 10 much more than the Blur album. Nostalgic conservatism in that trend.

Brilliant job, thank you so much. I've spotted a few duplicates: Gina Birch/Burch, Spanish Love Songs, Foo Fighters, Kahil El'Zabar, Juno / _juno, Melenas / Melanas, Raphael Roginski.

Looks like JPEGmafia finally gets a ranking on AM! Props to him.

A list of the "Best New Artists according to EOY lists" each year would be cool to see.

Here are the albums on life support:

35 | Róisín Murphy | Hit Parade
36 | The National | First Two Pages of Frankenstein
37 | Everything But the Girl | Fuse
38 | Ratboys | The Window
39 | SZA | SOS
40 | L'Rain | I Killed Your Dog

It seems like Róisín Murphy and The National are rising a little nonetheless, as did The Rolling Stones who are now in the "safe" zone for an AM ranking.

How many points did SOS receive on the 2022 spreadsheet? Enough to take it off the bubble when combined with its 2023 total?

A new look at the hanging-by-a-thread group.

35 | The National | First Two Pages of Frankenstein
36 | Troye Sivan | Something to Give Each Other
37 | L'Rain | I Killed Your Dog
38 | Everything But the Girl | Fuse
39 | Wilco | Cousin
40 | Bar Italia | Tracey Denim

Róisin Murphy led the pack last time, but actually fell down below this group. It's mostly Wilco and Bar Italia that really benefitted from this update, beating out a few competitors for a possible AM rank.

This is one of the weird years where the highest album on the MCCh winning actually feels like an upset. Caroline Polachek and boygenius absolutely had the narrative throughout the year.

This really feels like the year of long-running acts. Sufjan, PJ Harvey, blur, and ANOHNI all in the top 10 after being around for 20+ years. Slowdive, Fever Ray, and Yo La Tengo in the next block. Then we get bands like Depeche Mode, The Rolling Stones, and Everything But the Girl having unexpected late career hits, as well as Foo Fighters, QOTSA, and Wilco sitting at their level.

I kind of want to go back and see how this has changed over time. Taking a quick glimpse at the early 2000s, most years only have 1 or 2 acts in the top 20 in the 20+ active year range. And even back then, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan stood out as legacy acts having a comeback. No one really thinks of the above artists in that way (except the ones I mentioned having late career hits).

There are two reasons I think this might be the case. Artists in the past were much more prolific. With most artists slowing down to about 3 years between works (and more for a lot of the artists mentioned above), they're simply releasing a similar amount of albums over a longer amount of time. This is only album #6 for ANOHNI despite that 20+ year career, so her style still feels fresh.

I think this is also an unexpected effect of the internet shift. In the 2000s, I think we lost sense of a unified culture because everyone could find their own niche. But this also means the artists of this era are fighting for their own niche instead of a generalized spotlight. I think this era is much friendlier in regards to giving artists room to grow in their own way. There's less pressure towards conformity.

One thing I've noticed going through the 2000-2006 lists is that in the EOY lists, generally, legacy acts benefit much more than they do down the line with All-Time lists and decade lists. (There are exceptions, of course, for example Franz Ferdinand absolutely wiped the floor with their 2004 debut).

I am greatly pleased to see ANOHNI's absolutely amazing album reached the top ten, it felt like it was really fighting to stay even in the top 15 for a while there. Right above it, unfortunately, is Blur's middling return, which I'm pretty disappointed to see as high as it is.

I believe that in 2024, younger generations are abandoning written music criticism and consuming more YouTube and social media critics. If you review their year lists you will find a mostly different profile and in another direction (especially under 30). It may be hateful to say it but written music criticism has aged and will naturally advocate nostalgia.

Looking at the end date I've set for these spreadsheets, the next update for both songs and albums, is going to be the final one after the Grammys. It probably won't be the day of or after, it'll take me a little bit, but rest assured, it is coming.

As I've stated before, I'm more than willing to, upon request from Henrik in regards to a specific upcoming AM update, go through and update the spreadsheets with a specific list of previously missed sources. However, I just don't want to be perpetually updating these sheets with every possible source. So if you find a source after the final update, post it and when that update eventually comes, it will be added if eligible.

And the final list of hanging-on-for-dear-life. Will these be included on AM? Time will tell.

35 | Sofia Kourtesis | Madres
36 | jaimie branch | Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))
37 | L'Rain | I Killed Your Dog
38 | 100 gecs | 10,000 gecs
39 | Everything But the Girl | Fuse
40 | Wilco | Cousin

So The National and Troye Sivan moved into the "safety zone", trading their places with Sofia Kourtesis and jamie branch. Not a good trade-off if you ask me. Furthermore, bar italia dropped out, while 100 Gecs moved in. I don't have strong feelings about that.
