It missed the cut in 2012's 1991 poll, coming 16th. There are plenty of voters to come, and as few as 5 votes out of 30+ voters could be enough. I hope everyone at least gives it a listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ph3Pzu ... mqt9NqZB4G

Yeah it should be Chambord's #1 and at least 6 top 10s (including mine) so it should at least get a safe position in the wildcard list.
Might be a bit harder for the top 10 : obviously Nirvana, MBV, Pearl Jam, U2 have a spot each in it, and I'd be surprised if Massive Attack, Slint, Primal Scream, RHCP and A Tribe Called Quest couldn't secure one too. So that's already 9, leaving only 1 direct qualification spot which if I had to bet would go to Michael Jackson...
Now that I think about it, with Metallica lurking, I might have to worry for Spiderland...

I don't have specific recommendations, pretty much everything in my list comes from AM (or, for songs, an album that's on AM) but I'd recommend a listen to Les Négresses Vertes' "Familly Nombreuse", and especially this song :

Les Négresses Vertes are a fantastic example of French multiculturality being successful, they blend seamlessly raï, chanson française, folk, circus music, latin music... The album is not as awesome as Mlah, but still pretty great (no idea how allmusic could give it only 2 stars), and while the most popular songs, Famille Heureuse and Sous le Soleil de Bodéga, are infectuously fun, I have a soft heard for the tender nostalgie of Face à la Mer.

I have two overlooked recommendations from two famous acts.

First, Bob Dylan's Series of Dreams.

1991 was the year that the first huge official bootleg of Dylan and it unearthed some of his best songs. Most acclaimed is Blind Willie McTell, which should be a lock here, but since nobody has voted for it yet, it isn't.
Series of Dreams is a song that is very popular with Dylan fans, but hasn't quite amassed the same kind of acclaim outside the fan base. It is a really great song, though, with surrealistic imagery that befits its theme, but they also evoke a sense of peace rare in Dylan. The sound is also different than we are used to. It sounds like a Phil Spector wall of sound production! It was recorded for Oh Mercy from! 1989 and it is odd it was left off.

Second, Guns N's Roses' Coma

I know both Use Your Illusions evoke rather mixed feelings in general and I guess Coma is never going to be a consensus favorite. Still, after November Rain (which might have an outsiders shot of making our list) this is my favorite track of the album and one of the band's best songs. It's a ten minute epic about feeling disconnected to society. The lyrics, about how being in a coma is better than being in contact with the 'dead' outside word, appealed to me more when I was a lot younger, but the musical power has remained undiminished. You have to love rock songs with various movements, but if you do, this is a top cut.

I’m posting a provisional top 20 songs. (DaveC, I’ll let you know if and when I make any changes to this list.)

There were discussions in the 1990 poll about why many people seem to post their lists so early in the month rather than exploring other people’s lists and waiting until the end of the month to post their lists. I suppose the main reason is that people are excited about making others aware of their favourites. Even if those favourites are taken only from AM / critics’ consensus, it’s the unique order of songs or albums that people want to highlight to others.

But I guess it’s forumers who listen to music outside of AM that feel a particularly strong itch to make others aware of their outsider choices. I can relate to that. It often happens that I really like a song or album beyond AM, and hope that there might be others on the forum who would like it too. By now, I have a list of “usual suspects” who might like some of my less obvious choices (and in return, I also tend to like theirs). I’m sure all of us have specific people on the forum whose taste in music we feel are close to ours and are more likely to appreciate what we consider to be a hidden gem.

But I do at times discover songs or albums from people who I don’t always feel I have a lot in common with. The 20 songs below include songs that I’ve discovered through my usual suspects and not so usual suspects. And fingers crossed I’ll discover some more before the end of the month.

About my number 1: I’ve fully expected “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to sound outdated by now, or to feel like I’ve outgrown it. But it still speaks to the memory of the angsty teenager in me like no other song – and it seems to have the same effect on others, regardless of when they were a teenager.

1 | Nirvana | Smells Like Teen Spirit
2 | R.E.M. | Losing My Religion
3 | Massive Attack | Unfinished Sympathy
4 | Tori Amos | Silent All These Years
5 | Red Hot Chili Peppers | Under the Bridge
6 | Nirvana | Lithium
7 | Element of Crime | Blaulicht und Zwielicht
8 | U2 | One
9 | My Bloody Valentine | Only Shallow
10 | Simply Red | Stars

16 | Primal Scream | Higher Than the Sun
17 | Metallica | Enter Sandman
18 | Mano Negra | Out of Time Man
19 | Angelique Kidjo | Malaika

...will keep us together.

I literally love everything about this. Partners in Kryme last month; Firehouse this month - can't wait to see what '92 has in store.

Royal Trux was a great find for me last month, been listening to it a lot since. I'm looking forward to hearing a few of these I'm not familiar with. (Glad to see some support for Talk Talk, Sonny and Pere Ubu so far.)

A provisional albums list.

1991 was a groundbreaking year for grunge (obvs). Nirvana led the way with their raw grunge, and Pearl Jam followed closely behind with their less raw, more classic rock take on it.

Moving on to other genres, although it didn’t appeal to me at first, by now I can really hear how Primal Scream took the baggy Madchester sound to a different level by infusing it with trippy acid house, among other sounds. Shoegaze is usually too noisy to be a style of music I like, but in 1991 My Bloody Valentine made a lush and hypnotic album in the genre which I was pleased not being able to resist (and I guess I was pleasantly surprised by how much pop there is in the melodies). U2 created another album that could fill a million stadiums, but surprised many of us with an experiemental sound that was very effective. Also, Massive Attack created the first immense trip hop album, and Crowded House again showcased some beautiful harmonies from Australia/New Zealand. For the 1990 poll, I had 3 hip hop albums in my top 15, but for 1991 I only have A Tribe Called Quest on my list, with their impressive fusion of hip hop and jazz.

The less obvious albums from 1991 that I would like to bring to people’s attention are (unsurprisingly) mostly albums with lyrics that are not in English. First of all, I’d like to recommend Cesária Évora’s Mar Azul. Her more popular albums on the forum seem to be 1992’s Miss Perfumado and 1995’s Cesaria. Although I do understand why people could prefer those albums (I’m a massive fan of both), I’ve found Miss Perfumado a little bit too uniform in sound (the production in all the tracks sound very similar… which can be a disadvantage for an album over an hour in duration), and despite Cesaria arguably being her most varied album in sound, neither of those albums have the conciseness of her 1991 album. Cesária Évora is the queen of the genre called morna, and in just over 30 minutes in lenght, the 8 songs on Mar Azul very pleasingly captures the laid-back beauty of that genre from Cape Verde.

I also want to recommend three European albums from 1991. Element of Crime is a German rock group influenced by French chanson and unafraid to make use of the trumpet in their music. Arguably, their best album is still to come with the release of Weißes Papier in 1993, but this 1991 release has plenty of rock originality to stand tall in its own right.

There were also two gorgeous albums that involved only a singer and a piano (what a rarity): From Portugal, Jorge Palma’s , and from France, William Sheller’s Sheller en solitaire.

1 | Nirvana | Nevermind
2 | Cesária Évora | Mar Azul
3 | Primal Scream | Screamadelica
4 | My Bloody Valentine | Loveless
5 | U2 | Achtung Baby
6 | Massive Attack | Blue Lines
7 | Element of Crime | Damals hinterm Mond
8 | Jorge Palma | Só
9 | Pearl Jam | Ten
10 | A Tribe Called Quest | The Low End Theory
11 | Crowded House | Woodface
12 | William Sheller | Sheller en solitaire
13 | R.E.M. | Out of Time
14 | Zap Mama | Zap Mama
15 | Red Hot Chili Peppers | Blood Sugar Sex Magik
...will keep us together.

As mentioned before, I've been going through the acclaimed music song list starting with the most recent years and moving backwards. Luckily, I just got through 1991, so every song from the year in the top 10,000 has been considered (as will every song for the rest of the years). I also decided to at least complete the acclaimed albums of 1991 as well. I'm ranking all the songs or albums I give an 8 or higher (which is the limit of what I rank when I do my list updates).

Unfortunately, none of the new albums to me reached the top 15 - though I recently reevaluated #12.

I'm also including their rank in my recent all-time list updates, though I redo each year when I catch up to them in my project, so some of the songs have already seriously shifted from earlier this month.

Albums:
1. Nirvana - Nevermind (#11 all-time)
2. Primal Scream - Screamadelica (#26)
3. A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory (#48)
4. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (#71)

Funny how some people say 1989 was the first real year of the 90s while others say 1990 was the last year of the 80s. Very confusing two years. This year however DEFINED the 90s

1. The Wonder Stuff- Never Loved Elvis
2. Teenage Fanclub- Bandwagonesque-
3. Nirvana- Nevermind
4. U2- Achtung Baby
5. My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
6. Primal Scream- Screamadelica
7. Saint Etienne- Foxbase Alpha
8. Slowdive- Just For a Day
9. The Wedding Present- Sea Monsters
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood, Sugar, Sex,Magik

People say the same thing about The Little Mermaid being the first film of the Disney Renaissance but The Rescuers Down Under being the last film of their dark age. Same years and everything. Perhaps 1989 and 1990 were temporally displaced with one another?

For me it was more of an album then a song year, but what an album year ... my 6 first entries would probably been number 1 in 1990. Nice that i'm not the first mentioning Element of Crime. "Damals hinterm Mond" the first german language one is my favorite, but the whole 7 album streak up to "Mittelpunkt der Welt" ist really great.
And there is the debut single of a little known band named "Blumfeld" that will play a slightly larger role in my lists for the next years of the 90s

With Easter weekend coming up don't forget to get your votes in. Some surprises to come if new votes don't change the situation.
