I agree there are cultural double standards between men who sing songs about having lots of sex and women who sing songs about having lots of sex, but I don't think it's fair to attribute anyone who doesn't like Missy Elliot or Kelis to having this bias. And calling something crass is not the same as disliking it for being overly sexual.

I don't like Missy Elliot but I rate Betty Davis very highly.

If I could get an extension until tomorrow, that would be great. My list will give a boost to St. Vincent and recent acts in general, so at least you have that to look forward to. Thanks BleuPanda.

So, I believe andyd1010 is the only one who explicitly asked for an extension? If anyone else needs one, please ask soon - though I do have some friends coming from out of town this weekend, so I likely won't start until Monday anyway.

I made a change to my list. I forgot about Karen O before. Added her now and moved everything under her down, sadly at the cost of Kathleen Hannah.

Alright, let's. Although I do prefer round numbers. But for this time I make an exception.

What exactly are the criteria people look at when assessing artists? I'm just shocked that someone has landed in our top 100 when we just did a top song and album poll and they placed a single song that ranked outside of our top 500. How can someone be a great artist if we apparently don't care much for their music? Especially when other artists who landed multiple top 100 works on either list are lower? Is being an icon considered more important than making good music, and if so, why?

Though, now that I think about it, it could be like my old Florence + The Machine/Muse situation; for a long time, both artists had multiple songs and albums at my 7.75/10 rank, which is one notch below an 8/10 where I start giving artists points. So, they were teetering close enough to the edge with a large body of music of similar quality where, if I ever became slightly more appreciative of their work, they'd likely go from zero points to immediately landing on the upper half of my ranked artist list - this eventually became true for both of those groups. So perhaps this artist I'm curious about simply has a lot of songs people like but none particularly stand out enough to rank in many people's top 250 songs by women?

This is exactly correct for me. When rating my top artists, I gave 1 pt for a song I rated a 7, 2 for an 8, 3 for a 9, and 4 for a 10. Even though I gave 4 times the points for a 10 as a 7, artists with hugely extensive catalogs still benefited from having numerous songs I like but don't love. Ella Fitzgerald would be the most glaring example. She has so many songs I give a 7 that I actually moved her down in my list because I only have a few songs of hers that would rank among my all-time favorites. My formula for ranking songs/albums/artists has really come a long way over the years, but I'm still not sure of the best way to compensate for this (besides just moving rankings around if something seems not quite right).

Some artists had one great song, left a huge mark then burned out. Or some had very long careers and put out so much and had so many career phases they split their own votes on song polls.

We just need to remember that when other people’s musical tastes do not jive with our own musical politics or gender politics, we still have to respect each other and not accuse each other of sinister motives for ranking someone higher or lower.

One more change to my own list...for some reason I overlooked Beach House so I'm adding Victoria Legrand.

Also, since I can't start today and won't this weekend, I've extended the deadline to Sunday (which really means any time before Monday morning).

I didn't do an album and song list so we can't readily compare, but I'm sure all mentioned artists would have multiple entries on my song list and most would be present with an album. I don't use any point based system, but go with feeling. I actually find ranking artists harder than albums or songs, because it is more intangible what exactly we rank. For me it works best if I have some sense of a career overview, which means that the artist has to have multiple works out already and that there is a sense of development. That also means I need to know various works by said artist in different stages. Though there are multiple artists in my list that are relative newcomers (Laura Marling, Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey, Mitski), it definitely works better if the artists are somewhat older, at least with a 10 year+ career. Artistic development is a time process. I don't think that's unfair; newer artists can be in future lists. The reason why earlier mentioned young artists are already here is because they have worked hard and showed a lot of development in that time (and I listened to it a lot). With FKA Twigs, Courtney Barnett and perhaps even Grimes I still need to see where they are going.

I just moved Fiona Apple up from No. 5 to No. 3. She was probably in the 30-40 range a month ago and has been rocketing up since then. I just finished getting through her discography, and her consistency is remarkable. She's a contender for No. 1 once I get more familiar with her work.
