Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
For International Women's Day Spotify have developed the Smirnoff Equalizer that shows the gender breakdown of the artists you listen to & generates an “equalized” playlist with a more balanced gender breakdown.

Very impressive, JohnnyBGoode. I feel like I've been listening almost exclusively to women in the past few months, but I only got 38%. But if it's based on all the playlists I have, then I understand the outcome.

Until you posted I thought they must have just rounded mine up. Did it say yours was above average? Trying to see what the average is, but haven't seen yet.Henrik wrote:Very impressive, JohnnyBGoode. Yes, mine was above average too.JohnnyBGoode wrote:Until you posted I thought they must have just rounded mine up. Did it say yours was above average? Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
Even my 22% was listed as above average...
Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
I'd really like to know the methodology to this...are they simply going off the percentage of the songs I've listened to, or are they counting each repeated listen separately, or simply every artist I have listened to as a single number? Because I feel like my journey through the acclaimed music top 10000 could be skewing this toward men, and it would be kind of dumb if a single song from a one hit wonder I'd never listen to again counts the same as an artist like Grimes who I'll listen to multiple times a month.

I've seen someone say 13% is below.

I'm probably just a freak. Don't feel bad if you are below 50%. There are many other issues (historic & present day) that mean the average music output is not 'equalized'. Think being above (or even around) average is fine.

Now seen 17% above average, so between 13 & 17%.
Update: make that 14-17%

Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
I got 25%, but like others I'm confused about the method used here. It seems too low.
Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
I got 18% (which is pretty sad), and that was also listed as above average (which is even sadder). I'm not entirely sure where that number came from though, because I was listening to a lot of female albums on Spotify over the past few months. If it's based on my playlists, that number makes sense though.
Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
There is certainly a flaw in their methodology. I got 5% and that is just... no. Even counting the limited number of AMF threads I still participate in, my preferred listening is female artists. Looking at my search history, looking at my saved library... just no. So I would certainly take your results with a grain of salt.

I got 33%, for what it's worth, although Spotify hasn't been my primary music source in years. Either way, it's a good thing we have a vodka company to teach us all how sexist we are!
Splish splash, I was raking in the cash
Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
It's giving me 97% men, which can't possibly be correct, I wonder which playlist it bases this on.

Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
Maybe they have just tagged some artists as male or female and searched for those particular artists in the playlists.

Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
All I know, my #2, 4, 6 and 7 albums last year were all by female performers.
Probably my large amount of discovery listening skews it a little more toward males. But not 97% toward males. I expected something like 75-25%. Of course, now that I think about it, there are more male bands with incredibly long careers and also with incredibly long albums than there are female bands.
So if you like an equal number of male and female artists, and you listen to each individual album the same amount of times, Neil Young or Bob Dylan get ten times as much play as some of the top women.
Not to mention bands like Magnetic Fields with sprawling 50 and 69 song projects.

Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
13%. I have no idea if that is accurate, but I doubt it. Nothing on Spotify identifies gender, so they must be going off names. Would they even recognize that PJ Harvey is female? The process runs far too fast to have any sophistication built into it. We didn't need a Vodka company to confirm that everybody lies.
Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
I don't think we need to be self conscious about what percentage of music we listen to is written by females. Yeah, there's a systemic bias in the industry that forces women to work harder to prove themselves than men. Also we don't know if there's something about the job or to the rock genre that is naturally more appealing to the average man, or if it really is all just the cultural bias.
Really I think anyone who claims the observed difference between men and women are either ALL nurture or ALL nature is full of it and trying to please somebody with their response.
That doesn't mean we should feel politically shamed into applying quotas to our own tastes. If I have some sort of unconscious bias that makes it easier for me to like music performed by men, I hope I can realize it and get rid of it, but listening to a greater percentage of music by men certainly does not prove bias.
I think they only tagged closer to mainstream acts. If they aren't counting people like St Vincent and Vagabon my percentage starts to make more sense.

I have 46% men and 54% women. In my all-time album list it was about 50/50 (taking the lead voice as norm). Usually I have more men before 1990 and more women after 1990. The Smirnoff playlist is interesting, although mostly disco.

Re: Spotify Smirnoff Equalizer - % of Women Artists You Listen to - International Women's Day
Lol. I got 100% Women, which is simply not apt and I don't understand where they're getting that from. To make things worse, my "equalized" playlist still consisted of 100% female artists.
