90s SONGS Poll: The Results
90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Welcome to the results thread of the 90s songs poll!
To help keep nicolas sane and as a thank-you for all the great music I have discovered through him, I have offered to do the presentation for this songs poll. 22 people participated in the poll:
beefsupreme
Brad
Chris K
Dan
Greg
Harold
Henrik
Henry
Honorio
Kingoftonga
listyguy
Michel
Miguel
Moonbeam
Nassim
Nick
nicolas
Olivier
Romain
sonofsamian
VanillaFire
Zorg
Just a couple of things about the presentation...
To those who participated: your name will appear in the “Fan” section of a song if that song was in your top 15 or if you are the biggest fan of a song that’s not in anyone’s top 15 (but if a song wasn’t in anyone’s top 25, then it had “none” fans). And your name will appear in the “Not a Fan” section if the song was in your bottom 10 (I have adjusted this slightly if you didn’t rank the majority of the songs).
Only Honorio, VanillaFire1000 and Listyguy submitted comments on songs, so the presentation might be a bit bare in comparison with the albums thread.
We’ll start off with #100-91. I’ll post #90-81 at about midnight forum time. (Following Henrik’s suggestion, I’ll reveal #100-1 first and then #101-150.)

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Great presentation, Dan! The Spotify links came in handy, didn't they? I hope they won't make the thread heavy like the youtube videos.
Just a check..., there were six guys who ranked albums but not songs (including Stephan although miracously New Radicals made the top 100 without him)? I'm sure this is correct but personally I find it strange as it's a smaller task to listen and rank songs than albums.

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Yes, the Spotify links are very handy - thanks for adding them to the forum Henrik!
I was also amused that 6 less people voted for songs than albums. On the one hand it's a pity that more people didn't vote, but on the other hand it makes the results more unpredictable (like the song that was #1 in its year but ended up at #93 overall).

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Thanks for doing this, Dan! The presentation is superb.
I actually am "not a fan" of more than 10 of these songs. I assigned each song a rating and there were at least 25 that were rated below 5 out of 10. The 90s just aren't my decade. To the credit of the participants, though, the average rating was something like 6.5, which is a lot higher than I expected.

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
One thing I'll say is that I very rarely like 90s hip hop songs that sample 70s/80s funk tracks nearly as much as the original. "Juicy", for instance, takes the cool factor from "Juicy Fruit" but none of the magic.
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Damn there are some serious Biggie haters.
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
I don't hate "Juicy" or Biggie (aside from the awful "Mo Money Mo Problems" anyway), but listening to it after listening to "Juicy Fruit" is a stark contrast indeed.Listyguy wrote:Damn there are some serious Biggie haters.

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Since going to university from October, I've been clubbing a lot more than I ever had. The music naturally sucks - most of the tracks are either cheap pop or really sucky hip-hop, but it seems like the ONLY rap song any of these clubs have EVER heard of is Juicy. It's not that I don't like it per se, but it annoys me so much. I think I've only willingly listened to the song twice or so, and I know every single lyric. I'm surprised I'm not one of the not-a-fans.
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
I wasn't referring to your comment about the fill, I was referring to the 7(!) of 22 voters that had it in the bottom ten of their lists.Moonbeam wrote:I don't hate "Juicy" or Biggie (aside from the awful "Mo Money Mo Problems" anyway), but listening to it after listening to "Juicy Fruit" is a stark contrast indeed.Listyguy wrote:Damn there are some serious Biggie haters.
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
I love the "Intergalactic" cover
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
I said I'd be back at about 7pm forum time with more results, but life's got in the way and I'll continue with the show when I get home later tonight.
Is it just my phone or have these Spotify links had a good Christmas (are they getting a bit heavy)? Maybe I need to use them more sparingly.

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
The Spotify links work for me.
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
The Spotify links work for me too. They do seem to slow down the thread a little bit though, so I'll use them infrequently.
Here's #80-51. I'll be back on Wednesday to start counting down the top 50.

“Lunatic jazz. Björk had shown previously in her Icelandic 1990 album "Gling-Gló" her fondness for recreating-perverting jazz standards. But in her cover of "It's Oh So Quiet," and in the splendid clip directed by Michel Gondry, she created a fantastic and unreal world that was a step forward from the Broadway musical comedies and served for sure as the departure point for Lars Von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark." “Lunatic jazz. Björk had shown previously in her Icelandic 1990 album "Gling-Gló" her fondness for recreating-perverting jazz standards. But in her cover of "It's Oh So Quiet," and in the splendid clip directed by Michel Gondry, she created a fantastic and unreal world that was a step forward from the Broadway musical comedies and served for sure as the departure point for Lars Von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark." Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
I think we are really onto something here. What a fantastic mix of genres!
"La nuit je mens" and "French Disko" made the biggest jumps when I did the final ranking. Great songs!
Is that Chris Cornell on the "Black Hole Sun" cover? I always think about Peter Gabriel when I see it.

Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
Although I like the songs polls, I'm an album listener and prefer to listen to/rank albums more than (to) songs. Because of a christmas trip I didn't have a lot of time on my hands during the polls, so I had to set priorities and that wasn't very hard for me.Henrik wrote:Great presentation, Dan!
I've got a friend in Greg. And I think it's much easier to make an album list, because I can simply go through a couple of stages: first, I go through my all-time list, ranking all the 90s albums that made the poll. Then I go through my year lists and get all the albums in the top 10s that made the poll. Then I make a list of the remaining albums and go to RYM to get my rating, reorder them a little bit, and ta-da! album list. For songs that's last step in particular is much harder since I have no songs ratings on RYM.Gillingham wrote:Henrik wrote:There were six guys who ranked albums but not songs (including Stephan although miracously New Radicals made the top 100 without him)? Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
i really came to love "it's oh so quiet" when wz studied it in music class a few months ago. The lesson was about music listening and how we future teachers can lead a music listening.lesson for kids. And our teacher who is really great (in addition to be a sexy blode and an excellent musician) chose It's oh so quiet for its great contrast in tempo and intensity. A vocal tour de force

Sexy? Blonde? Musician? And she likes Björk? Nicolas, I need her phone number...
Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results
I suppose one way to make sure that the Spotify links don't get too heavy is to try and reach 50 posts (at which point page 2 of the thread opens and the size of page 1 becomes irrelevant). So I'm going to post the rest of the results song by song...
