2012 AMF EOY Album Poll

Post by Jackson »

The thread I posted on this last week didn't get many responses, so I figured I would just go ahead and start this!

Post a list of your favorite albums of the year in this thread by Friday, January 18. I'll count lists with anywhere from 10 to 50 albums. While archival/reissues are not eligible, I'm going to go ahead and say that EPs are eligible unless there are strong objections. If you post comments about any albums, I'll post them with the final list.

Wonderful year, one of the best in recent years... much better than 2011 and a little better than 2010 (although The Suburbs and My Dark Twisted Fantasy make that year fairly incredible, not to mention The ArchAndroid and Cosmogramma). Just like everyone else prematurely stating it, I believe "good kid, m.A.A.d city" will be a classic hip hop record in the years to come. Can't wait for 2013...

1. Kendrick Lamar // good kid, m.A.A.d city [4.5/5]
2. Frank Ocean // channel ORANGE [4.5/5]
3. Fiona Apple // The Idler Wheel... [4.5/5]
4. Flying Lotus // Until the Quiet Comes [4.5/5]
5. Grimes // Visions [4.5/5]
6. Godspeed You! Black Emperor // 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! [4.5/5]
7. Tame Impala // Lonerism [4/5]
8. Death Grips // The Money Store [4/5]
9. Swans // The Seer [4/5]

22. Goat // World Music [4/5]
23. Bob Dylan // Tempest [4/5]
24. Bill Fay // Life is People [4/5]
25. Gojira // L'enfant sauvage [4/5]
26. Max Richter // Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons (Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin/André de Ridder; Daniel Hope) [4/5]
27. Caspian // Waking Season [4/5]
28. Staff Benda Bilili // Bouger le monde! [4/5]
29. Bobby Womack // The Bravest Man in the Universe [4/5]
30. The Men // Open Your Heart [4/5]
31. Ty Segall // Twins [4/5]
32. Liars // WIXIW [4/5]

That's all for now.
Currently listening to albums from 2012 to stay 'up-to-date' with culture, as well as 'classic' electronic and indie albums, the additional hip hop record here and there, as well as my collection of comedy albums, from Louie C.K. to Bill Cosby.

My top 18, all of which received a 7.5 or higher, which I've noticed is the cut-off for albums I consider noteworthy for each year. I also included their overall rank, though I've only been listening to music for a few years, so that list just passed 800, and I've basically only listened to albums on this site so far, so some of these will still be in the bottom half...

1. Frank Ocean - Channel ORANGE (#30 overall, 9.5/10)
2. Swans - The Seer (#89, 9/10)
3. Grizzly Bear - Shields (#166, 9/10)
4. Tame Impala - Lonerism (#192, 9/10)
5. Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan (#294, 8.5/10)
6. Grimes - Visions (#309, 8.5/10)
7. Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. city (#344, 8.5/10)
8. Beach House - Bloom (#348, 8.5/10)
9. Hot Chip - In Our Heads (#377, 8.5/10)
10. Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel... (#393, 8.5/10)

Here is my list. I'll wait until the deadline of 11th January to post it properly in case there are any changes. I've listened to many more albums of 2012 than the 33 on my list, but those are the albums I've given a rating of 3.5 stars and above.

To nicolas (and sonofsamiam):

Onda
Fucking
Tropica !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great:
1. Beach House - Bloom

Very good:
2. The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now
3. Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
4. iamamiwhoami - kin
5. Bob Dylan - Tempest
6. Shovels & Rope - O' Be Joyful

Good:
7. Bill Fay - Life Is People
8. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
9. Anaïs Mitchell - Young Man in America
10. Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball
11. Dr. John - Locked Down
12. Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city
13. Gregory Porter - Be Good
14. Ondatrópica - Ondatrópica
15. Leonard Cohen - Old Ideas

Not a great year in my opinion. Despite the large number of pretty good albums there is just one great album, and even that probably won't crack my top 300.

Cheers Jackson. I've been trying to cram in all the records on my 'must-hear' list that I'm yet to catch up on for tomorrow but I keep on finding more to add to it! Considering that last year we had until the end of January to complete our lists, it would be really handy to at least get another few days or so.

I've always been appalled, and never will get used to, see this quasi monopoly of indie rock in a vast majority of lists here, as well as on critics' lists. To me, as you will see it in my list tomorrow, indie is just a part among others of what music really is every year.
Sometimes this site should be renamed "Acclaimed indie rock" especially when it comes to contemporary lists.

I agree with you in principle but I think the majority of what we see from other genres comes off as retro-imitation. Like, hey, that's awesome, sounds just like Otis Redding. Hmm...why don't I just go listen to Otis Redding instead?

Contemporary jazz definitely needs more exposure.

I'm bored by the likes of Grizzly Bear and Beach House too, but what about the lack of electronic or experimental music in your lists?

By the way, if anyone is pressed for time, I'm probably not going to start compiling these until Tuesday.
