1001 Songs..Before You Die

Post by caperry123 »

Hello all,

I am new to this site and had a question. I am particularly interested in the list of 10,001 songs at the back of the book 1001 songs you must hear before you die by Robert Dimery. I was wondering, is there anywhere I could find this list organized chronologically (in excel form, or however else)? I was thinking someone may have already completed this task, so thought I'd ask. I'd greatly appreciate any response or assistance. Thank you!

Welcome to the Acclaimed Music Forum caperry123!

You almost find what you need in this thread: http://acclaimedmusic.net/forums/viewto ... ?f=2&t=132

I hope you will find it useful even if you are not able to view the full list chronologically, since years are not given for all the songs.

One thing I've wondered is whether you have a full list with all sources listed (the 2012 file includes 4 sources). Similar in concept to the year end files or is that too mad of a concept?!!

I do... I have been wondering why nobody has ever asked about this, actually. The main reason why I haven't posted complete spreadsheets is that I am using short column headings. Probably no one else will be able to understand what lists all the column headings are referring to, so I'm worried that it would raise a lot of questions that I don't have time to answer. The album spreadsheet is a bit of a mess, but the songs spreadsheet is at least quite clean.

The file of songs not on AM is over 130 MB. It includes lots of formulas though, that I use to calculate a preliminary score, to decide what songs that will be added to AM. But even without these formulas I'm sure the file is very large, with hundreds of columns and over 40,000 rows of data...

Yikes. A big file though at 10,000 + songs that shouldn't be a shocker. If it ever came to it, it would be great to see though prob as a google spreadsheet - something externally available as it may be too big to post here!

The 1001 songs book had only one update, in the 2015 Edition.
The new songs are the ones you quoted.
They added 100 more songs to the final listing (now titled "10101 Songs You Must Hear").
I sent the scan to lagire. I hope he'll have the time to transcribe it...

Henrik, is there a certain way you would like this formatted? (e.g. separating the top 1001 from the rest)

I think the only thing I need is the 100 new songs from the 10101 list. Are you planning to post the whole list?

That was the plan. I don't know if any songs were entirely removed or not.

Will this be added in addition to the original edition, or will it replace the original edition on AM?

I can get you these, but the main reason I thought I was doing the whole list was in case there were some songs you forgot to add to the big spreadsheet the first time around.

Thanks, but I don't need that. I have a spreadsheet that Iagire made for me, with all 10,001 songs from the English and French books (2010 editions). I will post it tonight when I get home.

It is not included yet. The French version will be shown separately, but the gain will be very small for songs that appear in both books.

I Checked the xls file.
I Own the English version (2010 & 2015 Editions) and the Italian version (same songs as the English 2010 Edition)

Concerning the 1001 songs of the 2010 English Edition, the xls listed 1004 songs instead of 1001.
I checked my db and noticed that these songs are not included in the 1001 songs (indeed they're in the final list of the 10001):
Altern 8 Infiltrate 202
Paul McCartney Waterfalls
Ray Charles I've Got a Woman

Concerning the 1001 songs of the French Edition, the xls listed 1008 songs (shouldn't they be 1001?)
The remaining songs in the french list are 9282 (9260 listed as "2" and 22 without any specific number), is it correct?
The Davet preface indeed listed only 174 french songs...

I hope Iagire will comment on this. However, this is not what the original document from Iagire looked like. The number discrepancies might be due to something I have done with the file, but I don't have time to check this now.

I must say that, overall in this critics lists' forum and in the reporting error thread, the quality control is amazing. I once got an email from someone who had noted the accuracy of the info on AM, asking how this was possible with all that information. The answer is you guys. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

i'll check that again when i 'll borrow again the book at the public library.
All in all, indeed, it's weird that in the french editions there's 1008 "1" songs.
but i think it's because you have some additions of that french edition and so the excel file cumulate the english and french editions.
But i'll check that again, do not worry Henrik, you can count on me...

Thanks Sweepstakes Ron! Will you be back with the 10101 changes? Were the songs above moved to that category, or removed completely?

PS. I know you are busy with the eoy spreadsheet.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Are there 100 new songs, or a lot more?

For me, it would be great if your post could give an easy overview of the differences between the editions. Other than that, I leave it up to you to decide how to post it.

Many thanks in advance!

What I mean is: should I wait until I have all the changes to post them all at once, or post them over several different posts as I continue to find them?
Based on your response, I'm assuming the former.

I'm not very ok with that, it's not 2 separates lists, french version is an addition to the english one.
There are very similar.

For Altern 8, i know what happened > The first who transcribed the list think it was in 1001 cos in the summary index, there's 202, thinking it was the page number, but it takes part ot the title song.

For Waterfalls, book error, page number 718 but confusion with the TLC song "Waterfalls"

For I've Got a Woman, no explication, transcription error i think.

All in all, these 3 songs are well rated "2"

Thanks Sweepstakes Ron! I understand that it must have been exhausting to go through the 10,000 songs in the new book and compare it with the old list. I really appreciate the work!!

However, this thread is very long and it's really hard for me to get a grip of what the previously mentioned songs are.

If I can make a wish, then I would like a new spreadsheet, perhaps based on my spreadsheet posted on October 26 in this thread, that shows what songs are included in different versions of the book (preferably also with current errors in red).
- 2010 English version
- 2010 French version
- 2015 English version
- Other?

Iagire or Sweepstakes Ron, would you be interested in doing this?

Wow, there's so much work to do.
I can post a first version with English & French 2010 versions.
After that, i have to checked your 2015 version and another french version (i think from 2011), but i don't think for this one, there's so many changes.
If others versions are known (German or other countries), it's time to post it here.

Don't you also have use of Sweepstakes Ron's list above? I hope his work wasn't done for nothing.

I first check the 2 versions of this list, which i guess are the first versions (2010) and then i will add next versions.
If i remember, there's 2015 version (English & italian). Perhaps others ?
Just have to know which songs are in and are out.

I wrote all the songs that are in and out of the 2015 version in this thread. You can just copy and paste the 2010 column and make the changes accordingly.

I just noticed that this accidentally credits "Heat of the Moment" to Asian Dub Foundation, rather than Asia. (It does says Asia in the book.)
