BleuPanda's current listening topic

Post by BleuPanda »

I feel like I haven't explored the secondary works of many of my favorite artists enough. Too much time spent focusing on listening to works that are new to me, but I've been shifting focus to revisit works I've only listened to once. It's also been interesting in exploring the less discussed works (even if they have good reason to be ignored...)

I've been listening to every studio album plus every album listed on acclaimedmusic to gather the significant live albums. I've gotten through my top 4 artists already, and am now working my way through Bob Dylan's massive discography (on New Morning as I type this, having managed to survive Self Portrait).

I've updated my ratings for these works and figured I might as well share them. I'll likely give my thoughts as I go through each artist (which I probably should have done when I started).

Thoughts on my re-exploration of Bob Dylan so far:

His debut album is surprisingly good. For an artist who is sometimes derided for his vocals and acclaimed for his lyrical genius, this is a perfect example of his skills as a performer.

Bringing It All Back Home was much better than I remembered; it jumped from an 8.8 to a 9.4. It's a rare album where pretty much every song works for me. Though it is slightly edged out by Highway 61 Revisited, Bringing It All Back Home feels like his definitive pure folk. Went from an album I largely respected to one I truly enjoy.

I expected something worse from Self Portrait? It went on way longer than it needed and it seemed to lack his usual spirit, but I was expecting something truly atrocious.

I have no idea how to feel about Dylan's attempt at a country vocal style on Nashville Skyline (and Self Portrait); I bumped that album into my 8+ zone after the most recent relisten, but I don't know if the vocal style helped or hurt. He doesn't sound like Bob Dylan; he just sounds like some unknown singer.

(Before this project, I had listened to 23 Bob Dylan albums. I have 42 total on my list to check out)

I had started making a "rank all the LCD soundsystem tracks" list but I still have to listen to some b-sides.
By the way, do you know Big Ideas, from the "21" original soundtrack ? I think it could contend for LCD Soundsystem top 10 (even if it has more than a passing ressemblance with Radiohead's The Trickster, from My Iron Lung EP).

P.S : I can't accept a top 10 LCD Soundsystem without Great Release, even more so a top 25. :angry-nono:

Hmm...I decided to check it out again...and I'd still probably place One Touch and Yr City's a Sucker before it...

"Nude" was in the 41-50 range, but I decided to cut it to 40 since I was starting to fall into my sub-7 range with the last few (I'm sure there are more songs I'd rank above a 7 by Radiohead, but I simply haven't considered all their songs on their own. A song generally needs to either be a single or on the acclaimed music list for me to rank it, unless it's really stood out to me on its own...so many 7-7.75 level songs can easily get overlooked...)

The Basement Tapes has jumped into my 8+ range at an 8.4 (gaining 10 points), Blood on the Tracks jumped from an 8.9 to a 9.2 (gaining 8). Bob Dylan is now only 25 points short of the Beatles on my artist list, which really isn't that big at this level. If I finally come around on his big albums from Time Out of Mind on, I could see him ranking up (he'd still have a ways to go for Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem, while David Bowie is essentially untouchable until Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem release another classic album).

So these numbers make some sort of sense, here are the scores for my top 10 artists:
David Bowie: 613.8
LCD Soundsystem: 514.7
Radiohead: 490.4
The Beatles: 444.8
Bob Dylan: 419.6
The Velvet Underground: 334.2
Bruce Springsteen: 328.4
Nick Cave: 327.8
The Rolling Stones: 296.7
R.E.M.: 294.3
Elton John, artist #100, has a score of 103.9
Albums will score anywhere between 50 and 6 points for the artist (based on .2 intervals from 8.0 to 10.0), while songs do the same but at a 70% rate. The distance between The Beatles and Bob Dylan is the equivalent of a single 9.2/10 album, while even the slightest change could rearrange Velvet Underground, Bruce Springsteen, and Nick Cave.

Bob Dylan was definitely the artist I expected to benefit the most within my top 10 (along with The Rolling Stones), as I really haven't spent as much time with his work as the others. With the first four, I didn't really touch the score of any of their top albums, but I've been boosting most of Dylan's.

Unfortunately, I'm on Desire, which means I have over a decade's worth of unremarkable material coming up...

It's interesting BleuPanda that your favorite artists are all extraordinarily acclaimed. Have you increasingly appreciated acclaimed music over time as you've listened to so many AM albums, or as your taste always been this similar to that of the critics?

I actually only got into music around 2008 or so when Rock Band 2 came out, and I stumbled across this site soon after. So, for better or worse, most of my musical discoveries have come through here, which naturally means pretty much everything I listen to is acclaimed.

Part of why I'm doing this is I hope some of the lower bands have unacclaimed albums that are comparable to their other stuff; for example, Mogwai has a couple unranked albums I really love, I just need to commit to hearing them all.

Interesting, I'd say about a quarter of my favorites are widely acclaimed while the rest are moderately acclaimed or are somewhat obscure but have received good reviews within their genre.

The 80s were not a good era for Bob Dylan, though it ended on a definite high note with Oh Mercy, which went from being a low 7/10 to an 8.2. Bob Dylan is inching ever closer to overtaking The Beatles.

...and then I get to Under the Red Sky, which starts with one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Oh no.

Down to the three most recent albums...not exactly excited for modern Bob Dylan doing covers.

With a few changes, Bob Dylan has officially overtaken The Beatles in my artist file; I could see them being eternally back and forth with each other.

Just got through listening to Squeeze, the only new album for me in my trek through The Velvet Underground. As an infamous album, Squeeze...really isn't that bad? Like, it's nowhere near their actual albums, but there's nothing here that makes me feel its reputation is justified besides its status of carrying a name it shouldn't. It's a semi-decent pop rock album.

Bruce Springsteen has taken a massive leap pointwise, overtaking The Velvet Underground (but still far short of The Beatles). Three albums have been pushed into my 8+ range so far; his debut, The Ghost of Tom Joad, and The Rising. I'm just finishing up The Rising now, so I have seven albums left.

I'm not sure if I'll revisit Nick Cave; part of the reason he's so high is I actually did this with his work a couple months back. I still need to hear his single unranked album (Nocturama), but I'll probably just do that and his acclaimed songs. I'll also probably do this with Blur and Pet Shop Boys, who are in a similar boat.

Finished with Bruce Springsteen. I actually added five of his albums to my 8/10+ zone, which is a lot. He's pretty much halfway between The Beatles and The Velvet Underground now. I'm not sure if I noted this before, but an 8/10 for albums is right around my 1000th album, while an 8/10 for a song is right around #2000. A 9/10 would be about 250 and 500 respectively.

Re: Currently (re)listening to the full discographies of my favorite artists

Post by BleuPanda »

Just listened to Nick Cave's songs featured on AM and Nocturama. Nocturama is pretty much the most cookie cutter Nick Cave album that could be produced. Nothing here is bad, but nothing particularly stands out either.

Nick Cave

Albums:
1. Skeleton Tree (9.7)
2. Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus (9.2)
3. Tender Prey (9.1)
4. The Good Son (8.9)
5. Push the Sky Away (8.9)
6. The Boatman's Call (8.9)
7. Murder Ballads (8.8)
8. From Her to Eternity (8.8)
9. Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! (8.7)
10. Let Love In (8.6)
11. The Firstborn is Dead (8.2)
12. Your Funeral...My Trial (8.1)
13. Kicking Against the Pricks (8.1)
14. Henry's Dream (7.75)
15. No More Shall We Part (7.5)
16. Nocturama (6.75)

Top 20 songs:
1. Into My Arms (9.5)
2. The Mercy Seat (9.5)
3. Where the Wild Roses Grow (9.0)
4. Red Right Hand (9.0)
5. Tupelo (8.9)
6. From Her to Eternity (8.8)
7. I Need You (8.4)
8. Jubilee Street (8.4)
9. There She Goes My Beautiful World (8.3)
10. Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!! (8.2)
11. The Weeping Song (8.1)
12. Distant Sky (8.1)
13. Jesus Alone (7.75)
14. Do You Love Me?
15. The Carny (7.5)
16. The Ship Song
17. In the Ghetto
18. Higgs Boson Blues
19. The Singer
20. Deanna (7.25)

This song list definitely looks small compared to the previous, but Nick Cave's strength comes from his pure consistency, both in his overall career and within each of his albums. It's hard for me to pinpoint definitive songs, as every song is an essential part of the larger work. Many aren't songs I would listen to on their own, but work magically with each other.

Next up is The Rolling Stones; I have previously listened to most of these artists going by the AM list, but it's been a while since I explored The Rolling Stones and they have actually gained a couple albums since that time (Their Satanic Majesties Request and Goats Head Soup). They have a massive body of work, but I expect them to have one of the biggest potentials to gain.

Really, simply put, if a band has a bunch of albums floating in the 7-7.75 range that I haven't given a second listen in 3+ years, there's a high chance I was being too hard on those albums back then and will get more out of them now. I was much harder when I first began listening to albums, which was a major problem caused by starting with the top of the Acclaimed Music list. Everything was being compared to works in the top 100 range. I have since gained a better sense of scale, but those albums still need to be reevaluated.

I just finished Out of Time, and R.E.M. has shot from #10 to #7. Pretty much all of their albums have had slight jumps in placement, leading to huge overall gains. Document especially benefited; I pushed it from a 9.2 to a 9.6.

R.E.M. is a thoroughly consistent band throughout the first half of their career. I feel like they don't have as many hit songs as a lot of these other bands, but pretty much every track is at least good if not great.

I feel like I'm noticing a trend with both The Rolling Stones and R.E.M. where they start having longer albums once they reach the weaker part of their careers. With R.E.M., none of their albums go over 50 minutes until New Adventures in Hi-Fi, and then the next few go over 50. The last three non-cover Rolling Stones albums go over an hour...

I don't know if it means anything, but the combination of losing their quality and having to sit through even more of that lower quality really hurts these albums. I feel like an album really needs a reason to justify an extended length; I never get the sense these works are going for some grand statement, so why not trim some of the weaker tracks away?

I tend to have a lot of 8.0s when I do this; that is the lowest point for my ranked song list, which I like to update by working from the bottom and evening out the ranks. So, if I give a new song an 8.0, it means I know I want it on my songs list, but am not fully sure how high I want it (the 8.0 slot usually fills up enough between each update that a lot move up).

R.E.M.

Albums:
1. Automatic for the People (10)
2. Document (9.6)
3. Murmur (9.0)
4. Out of Time

8. Chronic Town (8.3)
9. Fables of the Reconstruction (8.2)
10. Monster (7.5)
11. New Adventures in Hi-Fi
12. Up (7.0)
13. Reveal
14. Accelerate (6.25)
15. Around the Sun (5.5)
16. Collapse Into Now (5.0)

Top 40 Songs:
1. Nightswimming (9.6)
2. Losing My Religion
3. It's The End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) (9.5)

Kraftwerk really shot up, just from me bothering to rank most of their notable songs and realizing most were in my 8+ range, with Minimum-Maximum giving that final push. They went from #12 to barely beating out The Velvet Underground to become my #8, which was quite a leap. What type of person has both Bruce Springsteen and Kraftwerk in their top 10 artists?

I feel like Kraftwerk is at a large disadvantage due to how packed their songs are; Autobahn is a 20+ minute epic, but it still gets the same point value as any other 9.4/10 song. Trans-Europe Express is followed by a cluster of songs that really make up an extended version of that track, so it wouldn't make sense to consider them as separate songs. It's not that they lack quantity as much as their quantity is in minutes and not number of tracks. But the percentage of actual songs from their three best albums in my 8+ range is astounding...if I consider the last four tracks of Trans-Europe Express as an extended version of the title track, that's all 4 songs; The Man-Machine is missing just Metropolis; Computer World has 3 of 7 with another 3 just under.

Basically, what I'm saying is Kraftwerk never wastes a moment on their best albums. Every track is exceptional.

Kraftwerk

Albums:
1. Trans-Europe Express (10)
2. The Man-Machine (9.8)
3. Computer World (9.6)
4. Autobahn (9.4)
5. Radio-Activity (8.8)
6. Minimum-Maximum (8.4)
7. Tour De Frances Soundtrack (7.75)
8. Electric Cafe (7.5)
9. Ralf und Florian (7.25)
10. Kraftwerk 2 (7.25)
11. Kraftwerk (7.0)

Top 20 Songs:
1. The Model (9.7)
2. Trans-Europe Express
3. Computer Love (9.4)
4. Autobahn
5. Europe Endless (8.8)
6. The Robots
7. Pocket Calculator (8.7)
8. Showroom Dummies (8.4)
9. The Man-Machine (8.2)
10. Radio Activity
11. Spacelab
12. Computer World (8.1)
13. Neon Lights (8.0)
14. The Hall of Mirrors (8.0)
15. Numbers (7.75)
16. It's More Fun to Compute
17. Home Computer
18. The Telephone Call
19. Tour de France (7.5)
20. Musique Non-Stop

The first two Sufjan Stevens album are interesting in the sense that, even though they won't stick with me, they really paint a picture of Sufjan as an artist who never quite seems to know what he wants to do. A Sun Came feels like a predecessor to Michigan and Illinois, but each individual track feels aimless. Sufjan is a man of many talents, but where his masterpieces are works of precision, A Sun Came is chaos. I'm not sure what to make of Enjoy Your Rabbit; it might be his harshest album?

Sufjan has already surpassed The Smiths; another reason I want to do this project is I always feel like I'm avoiding putting too many 'minor' songs by my favorite artists in my 8+ range. So far, I've already added:
For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti
Oh Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head!
Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
Come On! Feel the Illinoise!

And I expect to add both They Are Night Zombies and Futile Devices once I get to them, and I'm sure there are a couple off Carrie and Lowell that will fit in.

I'm also going through The Avalanche and All Delighted People for the first time.

Can someone please explain to me how All Delighted People is an EP? It's longer than most standard albums and even longer than one of Sufjan's own...

I've gone through three acts since I last updated. I decided to shift gears into female acts for the upcoming poll. I also just updated my album list, so I'll include my top 1000 placements.

The big thing here is relistening to Deep Cuts and the sudden existence of Plunge added enough to Karin Dreijer to actually push her above Bjork on my artist list; we'll see if Bjork can regain her top spot with Utopia next month.

Talking Heads

Albums:
1. Remain in Light (9.8, #43)
2. More Songs About Buildings and Food (9.4, #177)
3. Talking Heads: 77 (#180)
4. Fear of Music (#185)
5. Stop Making Sense (8.8, #409)
6. The Name of This Band is Talking Heads (8.4, #813)
7. Speaking in Tongues (#854)

4. Burning Down the House (8.9)
5. Road to Nowhere (8.7)
6. Life During Wartime (8.6)
7. Born Under Punches
8. Take Me to the River (8.5)
9. The Great Curve (8.3)
10. Crosseyed and Painless (8.2)
11. Girlfriend is Better (7.75)
12. Love -> Building on Fire
13. I Zimbra

15. Houses in Motion (7.5)
16. Thank You for Sending Me an Angel
17. Listening Wind
18. And She Was
19. The Book I Read
20. Heaven (7.25)

Bjork

I should probably revisit the Sugarcubes for this.

Albums:
1. Post (9.8, #40)
2. Homogenic (9.6, #93)
3. Debut (#109)
4. Vulnicura (8.7, #560)

20. Hunter (7.25)

The Knife/Fever Ray

Listening to Deep Cuts again reminds me that this band really knew what they were doing from the beginning. They definitely found a unique style with Silent Shout, but even their early work is effective without it.

Albums:
1. Silent Shout (9.9, #23)
2. Shaking the Habitual (9.8, #42)
3. Fever Ray (9.3, #203)
4. Plunge (9.0, #283)

St. Vincent...nothing really moved here. Strange Mercy and St. Vincent are two of my most listened to albums, so there isn't much that I'm overlooking with her. As I've said before, her work has consistently improved over time. I feel like a few songs off MASSEDUCTION could jump a bit, but I'd need to familiarize myself with them more.

Also, here's the next few artists I'm going through with this shift in focus:
PJ Harvey
Portishead
Patti Smith
The xx (not going to include any of their albums in the women in music project, but I will vote for their songs?)
Grimes
Kate Bush
Beyonce

St. Vincent

Albums:
1. MASSEDUCTION (9.7, #61)
2. St. Vincent (9.7, #81)
3. Strange Mercy (9.5, #151)
4. Actor (8.5, #709)
5. Marry Me (7.75)
6. Love This Giant (6.5)

Top 20 Songs:
1. Digital Witness (9.5)
2. Los Ageless (9.2)
3. Cruel (8.6)
4. New York
5. Prince Johnny (8.5)
6. Birth in Reverse (8.0)
7. Surgeon
8. Cheerleader (7.75)
9. Krokodil (7.5)
10. Marrow
11. Pills
12. Chloe in the Afternoon
13. Rattlesnake
14. Strange Mercy (7.25)
15. Happy Birthday, Johnny
16. Actor out of Work

PJ Harvey time. Bumped two albums up from sub-8 to the low 8 range. She scooted up about 9 spots to my #33 position overall, which is enough for her to easily displace St. Vincent. I'm thinking The Hope Six Demolition Project grew on me after seeing her live this summer (I've also seen Bjork and St. Vincent live!); half of her set was from that album.

I took a break from this to tackle the acclaimed music top 10000 songs; I always feel like my knowledge of songs lags behind albums. I've been going backward by year, as I find it easier to take everything in when I consider it from the point of reference as being from the same era, and I want to explore more recent years (before I inevitably get bored with the project and meander into the next one). I was inspired by slick's topic to share my own top 50s for each year.

Also, I've highlighted the songs that fall outside the top 100 for their year on the acclaimed music list (...time to see how generic I am).

I looked through your bolded songs, and in the 2010s I am glad to see "Raging Lung" and "Surgeon."

With the way the EOY 2017 song list is going so far, it looks like I'm about ready to have a whole lot of bolds...

2005

A few albums I really wish critics would dive deeper into here; Illinois and Z are highly acclaimed as albums, but a lot of their tracks are magnificent on their own as well. Demon Days also has a lot of underdiscussed tracks (there are two more unacclaimed songs from there in my top 100 for the year), and The Opposite of Hallelujah is the highlight of what I feel to be one of the most underrated albums of the 2000s (though Night Falls Over Kortedala is from 2007). Then there's Syd Matters, which I probably only love this much due to its association with my favorite video game (see also: Spanish Sahara topping my 2010 songs list).

2003

2003 is one of the most misleading years in music; five songs here are either in my top 100 or have been in and out, and the next few are also strong. But there's a rather large drop quickly; a King of Leons song being in my top 20 for any year is not a good sign...

For my sub-100 songs, you get a reminder that I adore Sufjan Stevens, and My Morning Jacket also tend to get ignored by critics on the song side, as does Rufus Wainwright. "Hysteria" has always been one of Muse's standout songs for me and I'm surprised it's not higher on the acclaimed music list. The Books song recently popped up in Overlooked Songs and instantly clicked with me, and The Russian Futurists song somehow fell from being in the top 6000 all the way to the bubbling section; I always wonder how a song can fall that far in a single update...

And finally, I remembered the existence of Shiina Ringo right as I was posting this, and the year looks a tiny bit stronger.

2002

6 Wilco songs in my top 50, and War on War is at #52...Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a really good album.

Lot of getting this year; The Way We Get By, Get By, Get Busy, Get Low...

Not many sub-100 songs this year. Threw in an extra Wilco song for good measure, Solomon Burke's late era masterpiece, something by Sigur Ros because post-rock simply cannot keep up with critics in regards to individual songs, and another from The Notwist, which is probably a sign I should check that album out again as it appears to be clicking hard if these tracks are anything to go by.

1. LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
2. The Knife - Heartbeats

4. The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??
5. Wilco - Jesus, Etc.
