The best albums of 2017 (update September 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Tinymixtapes; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

It took a while, but 2017 now has a really solid top 10...and we still have St. Vincent, Bjork, Beck, and a Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile collaboration album coming up, as far as the usual suspects go. This feels like the first year in a while where the back half is much stronger than the first.

And here am I thinking that Father John Misty would be a surefire top 10 contender here until the end of the year, but he is already down to #11. And even Sampha, who had quite a bit the hype at the start of the year after all, is on the bubble.

Then again, I think we could have made a very solid top 10 in the first half of the year already, although that would have been based on personal taste.

Well, my personal second favorite of the year is down at #21. It just feels like the average score among the top has made a massive leap with the last few major releases.

That's true, there have been quite a few additions to the top in the last few updates.

I completely agree that the top 11 are all great and will likely place high on the year-end lists. And the one album that I think will surely finish in the top 10 that currently isn't will be The xx's I See You.

My current predictions for the top 10 on AM's charts at year end are as follows:
01. Damn, Kendrick Lamar
02. Melodrama, Lorde
03. American Dream, LCD Soundsystem
04. Pure Comedy, Father John Misty
05. A Deeper Understanding, The War on Drugs
06. I See You, The xx
07. Sleep Well Beast, The National
08. A Crow Looked at Me, Mount Eerie
09. Big Fish Theory, Vince Staples
10. Run the Jewels 3, Run the Jewels

Uh? Didn't even know there was one in the pipes. I just listened to "You're the Best Thing About Me", and I'm not really hyped. Well, that won't stop them from getting their usual 5 stars from RS, I guess.

Charli XCX is not releasing an album before the end of the year. I swear her label hates her.

At least we have the great Number 1 Angel mixtape.
