AMF Favorite Books Poll: Voting Thread

Post by Listyguy »

Welcome to AM's first dabble into a books poll! In this thread you can submit your lists of favorites and I will lay out the rules and guidelines for the poll:

What is eligible?
Here is what we've decided will be eligible and ineligible:
Eligible:
-Fiction novels
-Short story collections
-Plays
-Epics

Ineligible:
-Nonfiction books
-Religious texts

How long must lists be?
Lists must have a minimum of 10 entries in order to be used for this poll. On the other side, 100 books is the maximum that will be used for the poll itself, but longer lists are always welcomed.

What about series of books/trilogies?
Please vote for series and trilogies as a single entity (i.e. they only take up one slot on your list).

What is the formula?
We will be using this formula for tabulating the results:
100*(1+10)/(position+10)

How long will this be open?
This poll will tentatively stay opened until August 31st, 2017. This is to encourage those participating to read a few more books between the deadline and now. If there is a general consensus that everyone wants more time, the deadline will be extended.

What should I read next?
Check out this recommendation thread if you are looking for things to read and/or want to suggest what others should read.

Graphic novels, manga, light novels, religious tomes... ineligible? Not considered serious literature?

Religious texts are certainly ineligible, for a number of reasons (such as whether or not they are fiction or nonfiction). Light novels seem like they would be classified with novellas as eligible. As for graphic novels, we've had some discussion about them here.

Great.
Good to see we still have some time to compile a list. Definitely will participate.
By the way, do we just post our lists in this thread? I think that would encourage others to join in.

I hope everyone has been as busy reading for this poll as I have! I finished reading The Stranger the other day, and started Their Eyes Were Watching God yesterday. I'm posting to remind people this poll is open and to let everyone know that I'm pushing the deadline back to August 31, 2017. There are two reasons for this: The first is because I'll have more time at that time to tabulate the results, and it gives people more time to submit lists (and to read for the poll).

I've read some books of the 21st century this year

Great:
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini: about friendship through the years; treason; war; religion; love; identity; and kite running.
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak: about the power of reading books; war; death; family; and writing books.

Good
The curious incident of the dog in the night time - Mark Haddon: about autism; and dysfunctional families. Funny, sad, and uplifting in the end.

Ohers
- A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini: put it away because the subject matter was too depressing after the "Kite Runner"
- The Time - Travellers wife - Audrey Niffenegger: I couldn't relate to the story at all, so I read about 50 pages before putting it away
- A Brief History of 7 killings - Marlon James: read half of it over a few months last year, but stopped because of the violence, and because I couldn't understand all of the dialects.

Currently reading
The white tiger - Aravind Adiga: think it's going to be one ot the great ones, about halfway through now. About becoming a "businessman" in Bangalore, India.

Also great from the 21st century
American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Ready Player One - Ernest Cline
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell

So yes, I'm reading books. And I will participate with a list.

Since posting here a month ago, I've read:
Stanislaw Lem - His Master's Voice
Charles Dickens - A Tale of Two Cities
Jose Saramango - Blindness
Chinua Achebe - Things Fall Apart
None of which will make my list, unfortunately.

Currently reading Carsons McCullers' The Member of the Wedding and am definitely liking it so far.

I've spent the past couple of months mostly reading non-fiction, and while many of those books were awesome, it has set me back a little when it comes to preparing for this poll. I still did find time to read 2 fiction books, "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" by Neil Gaiman (a good book and a pleasant surprise as I disliked "American Gods") and Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" (which was fantastic and will definitely make my top 50 novels list). I'm also a little over halfway through the William T. Vollmann novel "You Bright and Risen Angels", which is a little too verbose for the sake of verbosity, but otherwise a pretty great read. It may make my list depending on how well the second half goes.

This entry will be counted as the entire Harry Potter series (as series are being counted as a single entity for the purposes of the poll). So if you'd like to change this position based on that information, feel free to do so.

1. Graphic Novels say Novel so Fiction?
2. Are they entertaining? Always a giveaway its Fiction (that was a joke)
3. Let's ask a professor...

Maus Volume 1 was listed as Fiction by the New York Times, but Volume 2 was listed as Non Fiction.
Thus the answer is "both/either".
Persepolis is more likely non-fiction, though I could see "both/either" working there too.

Both are listed as nonfiction by thegreatestbooks, and I agree with this assessment. So I will bump everything else on your list up.

Simply, I would say that War and Peace has had more influence on the lens through which I view the world than any other work of fiction. I like works that elaborate challenging ideas, the more so if those ideas have substance beyond intellectual thrill seeking. I'm not sure if it is possible to read War and Peace all the way through and come away unchanged.

Furthermore, given that so many classic/great novels address the subject of war, it is hard not to sometimes compare them unfavourably with War and Peace as it is arguably the most realistic novel ever on the subject. Although it is also much more than a novel about war.

If it's nonfiction, then it is not allowed. I think biographical fiction is a thing, so that type of book would be eligible. But straight autobiographies and stuff of that nature is not.

No, not an ordered list. I just wrote down my favourite books as I thought of them.

Cheers!
Ok, I don't know that I'll be able to use this list for the final results unless it is ranked. Thanks for the list though, and feel free to rank it!

I will let my original list stand with a couple of minor changes; one was non-fiction and one was a brain fart. Q. Is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance eligible? The more I read about it the more it seems to be a very factual memoir. By the same logic, I'm eliminating Dave Eggers.

I've been counting it, as it seems to be considered "autobiographical fiction"

Please fix these things in your list. You also don't have a number 5, 17, 29, 50, 61, or 62 (having them in order might help catch some of this).

Listyguy: could you extend the deadline, by a week or two? I would like to submit a list, but, for several reasons, I can't finish it before August 31st. Of course, if the rest of the people agree.

Thanks.

Listyguy, I voted for the short story collection Labyrinths by Borges. However, in the recommendations thread I saw several mentions of Ficciones, also by Borges. Both Labyrinths and Ficciones are short story collections, and there is an extreme amount of overlap between the two with regards to the stories included. In this case, can any votes for Labyrinths and Ficciones be counted for the same book?

Looking over the contents of each, this seems reasonable.

Watchmen is staying on the list right? Like it becomes #3? Or is it being replaced completely?
