✅ Jim Beviglia's "Counting Down" Series

Post by Sweepstakes Ron »

So I was looking at the website for Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, waiting for the release of Steve Sullivan's next Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings, when I happened to notice that this guy had recently written a book listing the top 100 Beatles songs, with write-ups. Normally, best-of artist lists by a single writer are ineligible, but I figured that since this was published in book form, it might be different. As it turns out, he's written similar books for numerous other artists as well.

The Bruce Springsteen, Beatles, and Dylan lists are pretty familiar turf - but I am interested in the Tom Petty and Elvis Costello books.

Hi Jim!

I second what StevieFan said. Keep up the great work and welcome to the forum!

Perhaps this forum is full of lurking critics?? Your quick response got me wondering, ha ha.

Well, the other thread has the occasional musician trying to promote their work and leave (Norwegian metal bands apparently don't have enough time to stick around and talk about Tom Waits for a while).

One important detail I noticed: these lists exclude cover songs (so "Twist and Shout" was not considered for the Beatles list).

I hate to say this, with Jim himself participating in this thread and all, but the books about Radiohead, Elvis Costello and Tom Petty are only released as e-books as far as I can tell. As such they are not eligible, at least not per the rules that have been used up to this day.

Blah. And the latter two struck me as the most interesting ones. The Springsteen and Dylan ones are still good.

Not sure if this matters with your rules, but those e-books were not self-published. They were published by Endeavour Press out of London, an imprint that specializes in e-books. The four that were released as physical books are the Beatles, Stones, Springsteen, and Dylan.

If that's the case, it could still be eligible - if it was a self-published e-book it'd be ineligible, but this could make them eligible.
