Daniel Darc - Je me souviens, je me rappelle - 2004
Indie rock / Nouvelle chanson

Album : Crève cœur (RYM: 3.78/5)

Artist Biography by Craig Harris (Allmusic)

The lead vocalist of 1980s post-punk band Taxi-Girl, Daniel Darc has continued to raise eyebrows as a soloist. An outspoken bisexual who sings in French and Hebrew, Darc radiates intensity. Accidentally cutting his arm during a concert on December 10, 1979, he continued to sing while blood dripped from his injury. His repertoire includes such bone-chilling ditties as "I Will Kill You, I Will Kill You Slowly."

Launching his musical career while still in college, Darc was embraced by the Parisian punk community. Forming a band, Taxi Girl, with keyboardist Laurent Biehler and drummer Pierre Wolfsohn in 1978, he made his recording debut with the single "Yes, Me." Signed by the Incredible Alexis, who had previously worked with Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols, the group built a solid following in France. Their debut album, Seppuku, which featured an appearance by Darc's alter-ego, Viviane Vog, was released in 1981.

Despite their growing popularity, Darc and Taxi-Girl continued to be plagued by setbacks. While Wolfsohn succumbed to an overdose, Laurent left the band after several arguments with Darc. Although they subsequently released an EP, Cette Fille Est une Erreur, and nationally broadcast French TV station France 2 devoted an entire show to the group's music, the band played its final concerts in 1985. Embarking on a solo career, Darc signed with Epic and released three singles -- "Pans Sans Te Retourner," "Sous Influence Divine," and "La Ville" -- before recording his debut solo album, Parce Que, in 1988. His second solo album, Nijinsky, followed in 1994. Followed by two albums in cooperation with composer, director and producer Frédéric Lo: Crève cœur in 2004 and then Amours suprêmes in 2008, with appearances by Alain Bashung, Robert Wyatt, Morgane (singer of Cocoon) and Steve Nieve. The title of the latter album is a reference to "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane.

The last album released while he was alive was La Taille de mon âme in 2011. Darc died from a heart attack on 28 February 2013. He was 53.

Some of his materials were released posthumously in 2013 under the title Chapelle Sixteen

Je me souviens je me rappelle

Je me souviens je me rappelle
Très doucement jouait le vent
Alors elle me semblait si belle
Alors moi j’avais tout le temps

Dissimule dans le silence
Tes sentiments des espérances
Qui montent et plongent sans bruit
Etoile brillant dans la nuit

Je me souviens je me rappelle
Une croix trop lourde pour moi
Un bois qui pèse et m’écartèle
Et pourtant comme j’aimais cette croix

Dissimule dans le silence
Tes sentiments des espérances
Qui montent et plongent sans bruit
Etoile brillant dans la nuit

-----

Je me souviens je me rappelle

Je me souviens je me rappelle
Très doucement le vent jouait
Alors elle me semblait si belle
Et moi le temps je l’avais, oui

Je me souviens je me rappelle
Une croix trop lourde pour moi
Un bois qui pèse et m’écartèle
Et pourtant je l’aimais cette croix

Je me souviens je me rappelle
Je Dissimule dans le silence
Mes sentiments mes espérances
Qui montent et plongent sans bruit
Etoile brillant dans la nuit

Etoile brillant encore dans la nuit
Dans la nuit et puis…

I remember

I remember, I remind myself
It's in these places dear to my heart
That the day would end and I would be close to her
I didn't care about being unhappy

Hide in the silence
Your feelings of hope
That rise and fall silently
Shining star in the night

I remember, I remind myself
The wind would blow sweetly
She seemed so beautiful to me
I had all of the time in the world

Hide in the silence
Your feelings of hope
That climb and dive noiselessly
Shining star in the night

I remember
A cross too heavy for me
A wood that weighs and tears me apart
But how I loved that cross

Hide in the silence
Your feelings of hope
That climb and dive noiselessly
Shining star in the night

-----

I remember, I remind myself
That it's in these places dear to my heart
That the day would end and I would be close to her
I didn't care about being unhappy

I remember, I remind myself
How the wind would blow softly
And she seemed so beautiful to me
And the time I had, yes

I remember, I remind myself
Of the cross that was too heavy for me
A wood that weighs and tears me apart
But how I loved that cross

I remember, I remind myself
Of how I hide in the silence
My hopes, my feelings
That rise and fall silently
Shining star in the night

Star still shining in the night
In the night and then...

David Lafore - Un baiser, une bombe - 2004
Chanson

Album : Cinq têtes
Refrain (x2) :
Un baiser, une bombe
De ta bouche explose
Sur ma bouche en plein jour

Alors mes mains blanches
Toutes se dérobent
La foule de tes hanches
Hurle sous ta robe

Refrain

Nous sommes en amour
Des corps sans demain
Mêlés au matin
Aux corps sans secours

Refrain (x2)

La foule disparaît
Dans la lumière
Le feu embrassé
Grésille nos paupières

Refrain (x2)

A kiss, a bomb

[Chorus x2 ] :
A kiss, a bomb
From your mouth explodes
On my mouth in broad daylight.

Then my white hands
All evade.
The crowd of your hip
Screams under your dress.

[Chorus]

We are in love
Bodies without tomorrow
Blended in the morning
With bodies without help.

[Chorus x2]

The crowd disappears
In the light,
The kissing fire
Sizzles our eyelids.

[Chorus x2]

Marjorie Noël - Dans le même wagon - 1965
Chanson / Yé-Yé

Wikipédia (Google translate)
Marjorie Noël, Françoise Nivot of her real name was born on December 29, 1945 in Bayeux. She married on July 27, 1968 in Apt (Vaucluse) Robert Stroppiana, of which she has two sons. She died on 30 April 2000, buried at the Cheval-Blanc Cemetery near Cavaillon in the Vaucluse.
Marjorie became a singer after taking classes in singing and directing with Bruno Sartène and Mme Jeanne Bertille. In October 1963, she recorded two titles with Bruno Sartène at the Regency Studio: « Laisse moi m'habituer à t'oublier » and « Tu n'as pas le choix ». It is this recording that opened the doors of the record label Barclay Records. Under this label, she was always accompanied by the conductor Michel Colombier.

In 1965, in Naples, she took part in the Grand Prix de l'Eurovision for Monte-Carlo with a song by Raymond Bernard and Jacques Datin, "Va dire à l'amour", she had a very honorable stand against the Song of Serge Gainsbourg « Poupée de cire, Poupée de son », interpreted by France Gall. In June 1965 she took part in "La Rose d'Or d'Antibes", where she was semi-finalist with « Des filles et des Fleurs ».

She was an pop idol in Japan, where she recorded a dozen LPs. Some of its successes have become standards in Japan and Korea, which have been repeated by the biggest stars in both countries.

She also recorded two German titles for Germany, and some of her successes were licensed in Mexico. She will participate in numerous competitions and galas, {Eurovision 1965 in Naples, Rose d'or d'Antibes 1965 (semi-finalist), sponsored by Charles Trenet.

She left the show-bizz at the end of 1968 to take a new road and devote herself to her family, especially to her two sons (Franck born in February 1969 and Olivier in June 1971. Woman deeply human, At the end of her life, this love of people, her smile regardless of the trials, and a great strength she will pass on to her sons.

Nous voyageons dans le même wagon
Tous les deux {x2}
Et nous allons dans la même direction
Tous les deux {x2}

Tous les deux {x2}
Tu m'as souri et tu as cherché mon nom
Dans mes yeux {x2}

Tous les deux {x2}
Plus heureux {x2}

We are travelling in the same wagon
Both of us [x2]
And we are going to the same direction
Both of us [x2]

But I, I do not know you
And you, you do not know me.
But in a few time that will change.
Because a moment ago in the same wagon
Both of us [x2]
You smiled at me and you looked for my name
Inside my eyes. [x2]

Soon with thunder sounds
Our hearts will not be able to keep quiet anymore.
From all the train, you are the one I prefer.
We are travelling in the same wagon
Both of us [x2]
When we get there, I think we will be
Happier [x2]

And if you think the same way as I do
At the end of this travel,
Love will come to take us between his arms.
And if you think the same way as I do
At the end of this travel,
Love will come to take us between his arms.

Clément Janequin - Le chant des Oyseaulx - 1537 - Classical
Chanson polyphonique

Wikipédia:
Clément Janequin (c. 1485 – 1558) was a French composer of the Renaissance. He was one of the most famous composers of popular chansons of the entire Renaissance, and along with Claudin de Sermisy, was hugely influential in the development of the Parisian chanson, especially the programmatic type. The wide spread of his fame was made possible by the concurrent development of music printing.

Janequin was born in Châtellerault, Vienne, near Poitiers, though no documents survive which establish any details of his early life or training. His career was highly unusual for his time, in that he never had a regular position with a cathedral or an aristocratic court. Instead he held a series of minor positions, often with important patronage. In 1505 he was employed as a clerk in Bordeaux, to Lancelot du Fau, who eventually became Bishop of Luçon; he retained this position until du Fau's death in 1523, at which time he took a position with the Bishop of Bordeaux. Around this time he became a priest, though his appointments were rarely lucrative; indeed he always complained about money.

After 1530 Janequin held a succession of posts in Anjou, beginning as a singing teacher to the choirboys at the cathedral at Auch, and progressing to maître de chapelle at the singing school at Angers Cathedral. Around this time he attracted the attention of Jean de Guise, the patron of Erasmus, Clément Marot, and Rabelais; it was a welcome career boost, and, in 1548, with the additional assistance of Charles de Ronsard (the brother of poet Pierre de Ronsard), he became curate at Unverre, not far from Chartres. During this time he lived in Paris. By 1555 he was listed as a "singer ordinary" of the king's chapel, and shortly thereafter became "composer ordinary" to the king: only one composer (Sandrin, also known as Pierre Regnault) had previously had this title. In his will, dated January 1558, he left a small estate to charity, and he complained again of age and poverty in a dedication to a work published posthumously in 1559. He died in Paris.

Music and influence
Few composers of the Renaissance were more popular in their lifetimes than Janequin. His chansons were well-loved and widely sung. The Paris printer Pierre Attaingnant printed five volumes with his chansons. La bataille, which vividly depicts the sounds and activity of a battle, is a perennial favorite of a cappella singing groups even in the present day.

Janequin wrote very little liturgical music: only two masses and a single motet are attributed to him, though more may have been lost. His 250 secular chansons and his (over 80) psalm settings and chansons spirituelles — the French equivalent of the Italian madrigale spirituale — were his primary legacy.

The programmatic chansons for which Janequin is famous were long, sectional pieces, and usually cleverly imitated natural or man-made sounds. Le chant des oiseaux imitates bird-calls; La chasse the sounds of a hunt; and La bataille (Escoutez tous gentilz), probably the most famous, and almost certainly written to celebrate the French victory over the Swiss Confederates at the Battle of Marignano in 1515, imitates battle noises, including trumpet calls, cannon fire and the cries of the wounded Onomatopoeic effects such as these became a commonplace in later 16th century music, and carried over into the Baroque era; indeed "battle music" was to become a cliché, but it first came into prominence with Janequin.

In addition to the programmatic chansons for which he is most famous, he also wrote short and refined compositions more in the style of Claudin de Sermisy. For these he set texts by some of the prominent poets of the time, including Clément Marot. Late in his life he wrote the Psalm settings based on Genevan tunes. Since there is no documentary evidence, the question of whether he sympathized with the Protestants remains unanswered.

Le chant des oiseaux:
This "song of the birds" is a song with a refrain that could perhaps be related to the virelai.
Each of these verses begins with a discursive part (ie a part that supports text) and then the language changes little by little (in each stanza).
It is then a polyphony of onomatopoeias that mimics the singing of certain birds.
This song is also akin to the old French tradition of May songs like that composed by this same Janequin.
And a playful representation of the canon and counterpoint :

Old French

Reveillez vous, coeurs endormis
Le dieu d’amour vous sonne.
A ce premier jour de may,
Oyseaulx feront merveillez,
Pour vous mettre hors d’esmay
Destoupez vos oreilles.

Ty, ty, pyty. (etc…)
Rire et gaudir c’es mon devis,
Chacun s’i habandonne.

Rossignol du boys ioly,
A qui le voix resonne,
Pour vous mettre hors d’ennuy
Vostre gorge iargonne:
Frian, frian, frian (etc…)
Fuiez, regrez, pleurs et souci,
Car la saison l’ordonne.

Ariere maistre coucou,
Sortez de no chapitre.
Chacun vous donne au bibou,
Car vous n’estes q’un traistre.
Coucou, coucou (etc…)
Par traison en chacun nid,
Pondez sans qu’on vous sonne.

Réveillez vous, cœurs endormis,
Le dieu d’amours vous sonne.

Awake, sleepy hearts,
The god of love calls you.
On this first day of May,
The birds will make you marvel.
To lift yourself from dismay,
Unclog your ears.
And fa la la la la (etc…)
You will be moved to joy,
For the season is good.

You will hear, I advise you,
A sweet music
That the royal song thrush will sing (the blackbird, too)
In a pure voice.
Ti, ti, pi-ti (etc…)
To laugh and rejoice is my device,
Each with abandon.

Nightingale of the pretty woods,
Whose voice resounds,
So you don’t become bored,
Your throat jabbers away:
Frian, frian (etc…)
Flee, regrets, tears and worries,
For the season commands it.

Turn around, master cuckoo
Get out of our company.
Each of us gives you a ‘bye-bye’
For you are nothing but a traitor.
Cuckoo, cuckoo (etc…)
Treacherously in others' nests,
You lay without being called.

Awake, sleepy hearts,
The god of love is calling you.

Marvin Jouno - Quitte à me quitter - 2015
Chanson

Quitte à me quitter tu te souviens :

Quitte à me quitter tu te souviens :
‘Va, vis mais reviens’
tatoué sur ton dos, sur le mur mitoyen
de mon abri sous tes reins.
J’ai cru voir les confins de nos liens
oublier en chemin
que le tien c’est le mien
qu’à nous deux on ne fait qu’un.

Quitte à me quitter tu te souviens :
‘Va, vis mais reviens’
tu m’as dit :
‘Va, vis mais reviens’
‘Va, vis mais reviens’

Now that you're leaving me

I light 1 a match and it licks the wind2
I burn myself and I set our springtimes ablaze
I'm suffering, last dinner, Last Supper
I can't breathe, the smell of my slain heart is a bother 3
I'm crying, it's dark, all is tinted4
I'm dying, I'm harming our tomorrows5
I'm afraid to grow up aping them
I'm afraid to lie to myself, to pretend.

Now that you're leaving me6, do you remember:
"go, live but come back"7
tatooed on your back, on the party wall
of my shelter under your loins8
I thought I saw the fringes of our ties,
thought I forgot on my way
that yours is mine,
that we are as one.

I thought Bruxelles more beautiful9 and my pain capital10
I've seen "the getaway"11, I surrender without stopover12
desptite what we reckoned to be a bleak year13
maybe even more, maybe even more,
I didn't notice that by taking the ink14 away I was borrowing you15
I was lost in the aversion for the theme16
Then I re-read these few notes right next to a transport vehicle
That's not the proper way to sow17
That's not the proper way to sow

Now that you're leaving me, do you remember:
"go, live but come back"
tatooed on your back, on the party wall
of my shelter under your loins
I thought I saw the fringes of our ties,
thought I forgot on my way
that yours is mine,
that we are as one.

Now that you're leaving me, do you remember:
"go, live but come back"
You told me:
"go, live but come back"
"go, live but come back"

Translator comments:
1. laborious pun: I'm going crazy
2. invented expression
3. laborious pun: oxygen
4. laborious pun: all lights are switched off
5. laborious pun: I unclasp our hands
6. "quitte à" does make very little sense here, it's just used for the alliteration
7. From the French title ("va, vis et reviens") of the movie "Live and become".
I struggle to see the link between the plot of this movie and whatever story this guy is trying to tell here
8. laborious pun: underground shelter
9. Allusion to a Dick Annegard song
10. laborious pun: capital punishment
11. There are at least 3 French movies with this title, none of them having a plot relevant to his story (or lack thereof)
12. invented expression based on "unconditional surrender"
13. laborious pun: an emblem
14. laborious pun: raise the anchor (walk away)
15. Or might mean "walking down you", assuming the girl turned into a path
16. laborious pun: a translation into native language (thème) and back to the original foreign language (version)
17. laborious pun: love one another

Oo-oh…
Ton six-huit, ce n'est pas un mythe

J'aime tes coutumes, j'aime tes rites

Ooooh…
Ton six-huit, ce n'est pas un mythe

I'm under the spell of your six by eight
It is so powerful, your six by eight
The negative of my longing
Appears in a thousand colors

I open my lips in front of your six by eight
My only goal1, it's your six by eight
At work, you'll go quickly
You use it well, your six by eight

Oh… your six by eight, it isn't a myth

I blushed at the click of your six by eight
It is so powerful, your six by eight
There's a tacit agreement
Between my body and your six by eight

Oh… your six by eight, it isn't a myth

I love your customs, I love your rituals
All your strength lies in your six by eight
You want me to make myself small
To you, my body is strange

Oh… your six by eight, it isn't a myth

1. Double meaning : objectif means goal and lens in french.

Chanson / Valse musette

Song from the film "La belle équipe"

Wikipédia:
Jean Gabin (French: [ʒɑ̃ gabɛ̃]; 17 May 1904 – 15 November 1976) was a French actor and sometime singer. Considered a key figure in French cinema, he starred in several classic films including Pépé le Moko (1937), La grande illusion (1937), Le Quai des brumes (1938), La bête humaine (1938), Le jour se lève (1939), and Le plaisir (1952). Gabin was made a member of the Légion d'honneur in recognition of the important role he played in French cinema.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Gabin

(still my favorite actor ever)
On the film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi-WY_1zf-8

Du lundi jusqu'au sam'di,
Pour gagner des radis,
Quand on a fait sans entrain
Son boulot quotidien,
Subi le propriétaire,
L'percepteur, la boulangère,
Et trimballé sa vie d'chien,
Le dimanch' viv'ment
On file à Nogent,
Alors brusquement
Tout paraît charmant ! ...

Refrain:
Quel renouveau ...

{Refrain}

As you stroll by the waterside

From monday to saturday,
when you've done dully
your grinding job
to earn peanuts,
when you've suffered the landlord,
the taxman, the baker
and plodded through your dog's life,
at sunday you dash
off to Nogent1
and all of a sudden
everything seems so lovely!...

(chorus)
As you stroll by the waterside,
everything is so beautiful...
what a revival...
Seen from afar, Paris looks like a jail,
your heart is filled with songs.
The smell of flowers
turns you upside down
and happiness
gets you drunk on the cheap.

The week's
sorrows and bothers,
they're all drowned in blue and green...
A single sunday by the waterside,
basked in the songs
of the little birds
is enough for all days to look beautiful
as you stroll by the waterside.

I know gloomy people
who keep worrying crazy
and dream of sneaking off
to a better world.
They spend a lot of dough
to discover wonders.
As for me, I'm sorry for them...
Since there is no need
to look so far away
to find a place
where you feel so good...

(chorus)

A single sunday by the waterside,
basked in the songs
of the little birds
is enough for all days to look beautiful
as you stroll by the waterside.

Ice - La grande guerre - 1984
New Wave / Post punk / Darkwave
Le noir présent
Cache le blanc absent
Des jours idées
De vérités

Les lendemains
Sans espoirs, si loin
Du temps présent
Et du temps ancien

Le noir présent
Cache le blanc absent
Des jours idées
De vérités

L'objet présent
Sur l'objet caché
Es-tu réelle ?
Es-tu cachée ?

La grande guerre..
La grande guerre..

Le noir présent
Cache le blanc absent
Des jours lointains
De vérités

Pourquoi ces pleurs
Sur ce visage
Es-tu réelle ?
Es-tu cachée ?

La grande guerre..
La grande guerre..

La grande guerre..
La grande guerre..

Les lendemains
recherchent en vain
Ce qui est vrai,
ce qui est faux

Les sentiments
Trop maîtrisés
Es-tu réelle ?
Es-tu cachée ?

La grande guerre..
La grande guerre..

La grande guerre..
La grande guerre..

Le noir présent
Cache le blanc absent
Des jours idées
De vérités

Les lendemains
Sans espoirs, si loin
Tu es réel !
Mais tu es cachée !

La grande guerre..
La grande guerre..

The great war

The present black
Hides the absent white
Of days, ideas
Of truths.

The tomorrows
Hopeless, so far away
From the present time
And the ancient time.

The present black
Hides the absent white
Of days, ideas
Of truths.

The present object
On the hidden object
Are you real ?
Are you hidden ?

The great war..
The great war..

The present black
Hides the absent white
Of days, far away
From truths.

Why are these tears
On this face ?
Are you real ?
Are you hidden ?

The great war..
The great war..

The great war..
The great war..

The tomorrows
Are searching in vain
What is true,
What is false.

The feelings
Too much controlled
Are you real ?
Are you hidden ?

The great war..
The great war..

The great war..
The great war..

The present black
Hides the absent white
Of days, ideas
Of truths.

The tomorrows
Hopeless, so far away
You are real !
But you are hidden !

The great war..
The great war..

Thierry Maillard Trio - La côte sauvage - 2013 - Jazz

Album: Beyond the ocean (RYM: 3.57/5)

thierrymaillard.com
Pianist and composer, Thierry Maillard graduated from the Ecole Normale de musique in Paris. He studied in class piano, accordion, harmony and counterpoint.
Of classically trained, he will quickly discover the jazz and its freedom of expression at the end of his studies. Therefore, it will unveil a new musical genre influenced by his experiences, encounters, mingling harmoniously classical, jazz and world music.

Determined composer and orchestrator, he thus recorded 12 albums as a leader. We discover him for the first time in 1998 with her first album « Paris-New York » recorded in New York with Dennis Chambers on drums and John Patitucci on bass, under the Verve Emarcy label.

Passionate musician, he worked with great names of jazz such as Bireli Lagrène, Chris Minh Doky, Bobby Shew, Michel Portal, Bernard Lubat, Didier Lockwood, Dominique Di Piazza, Matthew Garrison …

His love for the strings and orchestration will lead him naturally to associate with the game of the jazz trio a string quartet, 3 times in the albums « New septet », « Vision » and « Notre Histoire ».

It is in 2014 that he embarked on the first phase of this project. He recorded the album « The Alchemist » with a Chamber Orchestra and musicians of world music. Critically acclaimed with this new album and strong of its success on stage, Thierry decides to lead the adventure at its peak.

In 2015 the signature under the label "naïve" puts the starting point to the finalization of the project. In January 2015, studio recording of the jazz trio and guests such as Nguyên Lê, Didier Malherbe, Minino Garay, then registration in the Czech Republic with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jan Kucera.

Moments magical and timeless, ultimate outcome in the career of Thierry who thus realized his greatest dream of composer…

Jil Caplan - Tout c'qui nous sépare - 1991
Chanson / French pop

Album: La charmeuse de serpents (RYM: 3.5/5)

Artist Biography by Jason Birchmeier (Allmusic)

Jil Caplan is a French pop singer whose peak success came in the early '90s in collaboration with hitmaker Jay Alanski. Born Jil Valentine on October 20, 1965, she initially became acquainted with Alanski during the mid-'80s when he collaborated with her friends in the band Les Innocents on their 1987 Top 40 hit single "Jodie."
Alanski found Caplan promising and chose to collaborate with her on A Peine 21 (1987), her full-length album debut. Written and produced almost entirely by Alanski, A Peine 21 was a modest success for the previously unknown singer and spawned her first Top 40 hit single, "Oh! Tous les Soirs."
The follow-up album, La Charmeuse de Serpents (1990), again written and produced by Alanski, built upon the breakthrough success of its predecessor and spawned a series of singles including the Top Ten hit "Tout C'qui Nous Sépare," the Top 20 hit "Natalie Wood," and the Top 40 hit "As-tu Déjà Oublié?"
Moreover, the success of the album earned Caplan the 1992 Victoire de la Musique award for Female Pop Revelation of the Year. In the wake of this acclaim, Caplan collaborated with Alanski a third time for Avant Qu'il Ne Soit Trop Tard (1993), but when that album failed to rival the success of its predecessors, she changed direction.
Her fourth album, Jil Caplan (1996), was a more personal effort on which she co-wrote a good share her material for the first time, collaborating primarily with Franck Eulry. A few years after the best-of compilation Jours de Fête (1998), Caplan released Toute Crue (2001), a collaboration with Jean-Philippe Nataf (aka Jipé of Les Innocents). She subsequently collaborated with Jean-Christophe Urbain, another member of Les Innocents, for Comme Elle Vient (2004), and reunited with Alanski for Derrière la Porte (2007).

The song (Wikipédia)
"Tout c'qui nous sépare" (English: "All That Separates Us") is a 1991 pop song recorded by French singer Jil Caplan, released as CD single in March 1991. It was the first single from her second studio album, La Charmeuse de serpents, released a few months earlier, on which it appeared as second track. Written and composed by Jay Alansky, the song became a top ten hit in France and remains Caplan's most successful single in terms of sales and chart performances. It was later included on the singer's 1998 greatest hits album, Jours de fête.

When she listened to the song for the first time, Caplan said: "It [was] a love at first sight. I love this song deeply, its lyrics, its images. (...) It is a perfect echo of my journey in the American West." Composer and producer Jay Alansky, who felt that the song was a potential hit, had stage fright when he recorded the guitar in the studio and thus had to restart several times.

The music video was shot in 1991 in the United States, in the Canyon de Chelly and on the shores of the Lake Powell, Utah. It was directed by Éric Mulet and is composed images showing Caplan in a funfair and in natural settings.

According to Elia Habib, an expert of French charts, "the characteristic timbre of the singer gets married with the sound of a special slide guitar and a harmonica. (...) [The] song chorus [is] marked by a changing chorus, showing solidarity with the verses in which it fits closely and continuity". Regarding the theme, the French newspaper Libération said the song "talks about a separation through sound words, without falling into sadness".

In 2007, sixteen years after the release of the song, Caplan said: "I absolutely do not deny this song which was pretty well built. It has luminous lyrics, which for me is the memory of a great time." In 2011, she proved it by covering the song in a more acoustic version on her album Revue which was released on 3 May 2011.

Perdu mon p'tit phare

{Instrumental}

{Instrumental}

{ad lib..}

All That Separates Us

We no longer share secrets
We no longer share our joys
We talk no more of grander things when we meet
We burn our fingers no more
And facing all that separates us
Without anything which repairs
In the name of all that separates us
Without the shadow of a hope
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Our past is like the dust
That we blow on a wall
Particles which dance in the sunlight
And disappear all on their own
When I think of all that separates us
With no way left which repairs
In the name of all that separates us
Like two shadows standing aloof
I've lost the light inside me
Lost my little lamp
Which lit up all my smiles
Now I see more when in the dark
So it's like ending those days in prison
What makes you hold on is the absence of reason
And the distance which separates us
The ghosts of the past
All that separates us

{Instrumental}

In the name of all that separates us

{Instrumental}

I could interpret your silences
But that tells me no more than nothing
What is the value of things
If what we exchange costs nothing anymore?
In the face of all that separates us
Without anything which repairs
In the name of all that separates us
Betrayed and ridiculed

It's like a revolution
A country wiped from a map
I know all too well the why, the how
Even before you go
So it's like ending those days in prison
What made us hold on is the absence of reason
And the distance which separates
The heroes of our story
In the name of all that separates us
Soiled and without hope
In the name of all that separates us...

Die Form - Masochist - 1984
Darkwave / Electronic / Minimal Wave

Wikipédia:
Die Form is a French post-industrial and electronic band formed in 1977-78. The name 'Die Form' means '(the) form/shape' in German, like the Bauhaus diary and is a play on the French homonym 'difforme' (deformed).

Die Form is the primary project of the French electronic musician and multimedia artist Philippe Fichot. He began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases, starting with Die Form 1 in 1977, and with the first Die Form vinyl release ('Die Puppe') appearing in 1982. Whilst the project was still in its infancy, the underlying concepts were still evident - a combination of esoteric electronic experiments with an underlying theme of erotism, death and other 'taboo' subjects, apparent in both the music and the album artwork, which Philippe also produces. Other early projects of Philippe Fichot included Krylon Hertz, Mental Code, Camera Obscura, Eva-Johanna Reichstag, Hurt and Fine Automatic.

'Some Experiences With Shock' followed in 1984, with the project taking a direction towards a more commercial sound on 1986's 'Poupée Mécanique'. The project then consolidated its experimental and melodic sides on 'Photogrammes', before introducing vocalist (and model) Eliane P. on the 1991 album 'Corpus Delicti', who remains with the project to this day. The next release, 1992's 'Confessions' saw a club hit in 'Silent Order', with sister album 'Ad Infinitum' (which originated from the same recording sessions) released a year later.

The next 'Die Form' releases saw the poetic, emotional side of their sound richen via 'The Trilogy of Passions', starting with 'Suspiria De Profundis' in 1994, followed by 'L'âme électrique' the following year. 1997's 'Duality' does not complete the trilogy, Phillipe Fichot choosing to leave the project open-ended. The 'Histories' compilation discs appeared in 1998, with the next album 'Extremum/XX' appearing in 2000. Then followed the 'diptych' of 'InHuman' (2004) and 'ExHuman' (2006), continuing their release of interrelated concept albums.

"The Bach project" was released in January 2008, an album obviously devoted to Bach. Die Form first presented this work live during the annual Bach Days in the German city of Leipzig, where they got invited. Die Form has created a new show for this project with the German dancer Sabine Seume.

Die Form left Trisol to join Out of Line in late 2008. A new single, "Her[t]z Frequenz", was released in October 2008, followed by the "Best of XXX" in November 2008 (a compilation with reworked and remastered songs from the past 30 years).

In 2009, "Noir Magnétique" saw Die Form back in a club-oriented sound. The album was made available on CD only, with a special edition limited to 999 copies in a box with a 7" single and extra artwork. Die Form created a new show with Laina Fischbeck on stage.

In March 2010, a vinyl boxset compilation of early K-Cassette material was released on Vinyl-On-Demand.

In 2011, a double-CD digipak limited edition of Sombre Printemps ("Ambient & Film Music 1+2") has been released on Out Of Line.

Jean-Baptiste Clément - Le temps des cerises - 1866
Historical song

Wikipédia:
Le Temps des cerises is a song written in France in 1866, with words by Jean-Baptiste Clément and music by Antoine Renard, extremely famous in French-speaking countries. The song was later strongly associated with the Paris Commune, during which verses were added to the song, thus becoming a revolutionary song. The "Time of Cherries" is a metaphor regarding what life will be like when a revolution will have changed social and economic conditions. It is believed to be dedicated by the writer to a nurse who fought in the Semaine Sanglante ("Bloody Week") when French government troops overthrew the commune.

For its hourly chime, the clock of the town hall in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis alternates between two different tunes, "Le roi Dagobert a mis sa culotte à l'envers" and "Le temps des cerises".

When we sing of cherry time
and the happy nightingale and the mockingbird
will all be celebrating,
pretty girls will have foolish ideas in their heads
and lovers [will have] dunchine in their hearts.
When we sing of cherry time
the mockingbird will whistle much better.

But it's very short, the cheery time,
when we go off, dreaming, to harvest
some ear-rings,
cherries of love dressed alike
falling through the leaves like drops of blood.
But it's very short, cherry time,
pendnts of pink coral which we harvest while dreaming.

When you are there at cherry time
if you're scared of heartaches
avoid the pretty girls.
I, who am not afraid of harsh treatment,
I won't live without suffering some day.
when you are there at cherry time
you will have heartache too.

I shall always like cherry time.
It from that time that I keep in my heart
an open wound;
and Mistress Fortune, being offered to me,
will never be able to end my pain.
I shall always like cherry time
and the memory I keep in my heart.

Zoufris Maracas - Et ta mère - 2012
Chanson

Album : Prison dorée (RYM: 3.49/5)

Artist Biography by Jon O'Brien (Allmusic)

Inspired by both legendary French chanteurs and the sounds of their African heritage, Zoufris Maracas are an eclectic world music outfit who rose to fame with their humorous and poetic take on a wide range of social and political issues. Named after the group of Algerian workers who immigrated to France in the second half of the 20th century, founders Vin and Micho met at age 15 and soon after traveled together across West Africa, performing the songs of Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens on a four-string guitar. After going their separate ways, they regrouped in 2007 to begin busking on the streets of Paris, where they were discovered by producer Francois Causse (who later joined the duo on drums). Following the recruitment of trumpeter Brice and gypsy guitarist Mike, they released their debut album, Prison Doree, in 2012.

Album review:
Zoufris Maracas, aka childhood friends Vincent and Micho, introduced the world to their eclectic blend of gypsy swing, zouk, Afro-beat, and Cuban music with their 2012 debut album, Prison Doree. Inspired by both legendary French chanteurs Georges Brassens and Jacques Brel, and contemporary world music artists Manu Chao and Mathieu Boogaerts, its 15 socially-conscious poetic tracks include the single "Et Ta Mere."

Allez laisse moi rire, allez
Allez laisse moi partir, allez
Allez laisse moi m'envoler
Exhibant tes amants
Me proposant maîtresse
Allez laisse moi rire, allez
Allez laisse moi partir, allez
Allez laisse moi m'envoler
Allez laisse moi rire, allez
Allez laisse moi partir, allez
Allez laisse moi m'envoler
Allez laisse moi rire, allez
Allez laisse moi partir, allez
Allez laisse moi m'envoler

Let alone your mom

How long will I still have to picture
the lines of your body wobbling1 one by one
on the spring bed I had given you.
Our love is really dead
and the bill is bitter
Let alone your mom2
How long will you still swing
from body to body3
until you get fed up with
the brown-haired, the blond, the ginger, the small, the stocky,
the long, tall, the crazy, the mean, the lewd4
Let alone your mom
Let alone your mom
Come on, let me have a laugh
Come on, let me go
Come on, let me fly away
Come on, let me flee, I want to forget it all
(I want to forget it all)
How long will I still see you come back
to your misty dreams soaked with pleasure,
showing off your lovers,
suggesting I should take a mistress5
No matter the bottle as long as intoxication is there6
Let alone your mom
How long will my tormented mind still
let me believe that the verb "to cheat"
rhymes with "despair, treason, satiety"7
and that there is no love without exclusivity
And what about your dear mother?
Come on, let me have a laugh
Come on, let me go
Come on, let me fly away
Come on, let me flee, I want to forget it all
How long will you still come and wimper
over this rotten love you ceaselessly
split open with an axe?
You wanted it to be stillborn
Will you always be a coward when things get risky
Bitter taste
I don't want to see you, to hear you anymore
I don't want to know, to understand anything anymore
I can't believe you anymore, I just want to forget
And stop yelling when you get caught
Like your mother
Like your mother
Come on, let me have a laugh
Come on, let me go
Come on, let me fly away
Come on, let me flee, I want to forget it all
Come on, let me have a laugh
Come on, let me go
Come on, let me fly away
Come on, let me flee, I want to forget it all
(forget it all, forget it all)
How long will I still have to picture
the lines of your body wobbling one by one
on the spring bed I had given you.
Our love is really dead
and the bill is bitter
And your mother
And your mother

Translator comments:
1. "se dandiner" evokes the movement of something fat or clumsy, like a penguin or an elephant. That's just a poor choice of word, if you ask me
2. the song hinges on this ponderous pun. "Et ta mère" can mean a few different things. "ta mère" is a common insult (your mom is a slut). "Et ta mère" literally means "Now what about your mom?", but can be used to imply all what your interlocutor just said is a lot of rubbish. It also sounds exactly as "est amer" (is bitter). In my opinion, it's mostly meaningless here, like a rhytmic noise
3. or could mean "fling yourself upon a body after another"
4. "corsé" does not really mean anything here. The adjective goes usually with food (a strong coffee) or situations (a lewd dialogue), but does not work well with guys (or cocks, as the French might imply)
5. the French is trying to look elegant here, but fails, in my opinion
6. that's a warped quote of a lengthy poem of Musset's that has become a cliché over the centuries (Musset basically says "love is the point, whoever the mistress might be : no matter the bottle, as long as one gets drunk", which is not especially nice to women if you ask me. Apparently, Musset was terribly afraid of them .
7. what a pile of gibberish...

Berenice - Alors Dieu châtia l'Homme - 1971
Progressive rock

Musicalia (Google Translate)
Berenice for their unique single gives us a powerful title built on a nagging rhythm to the text recited in French and concluded by a rage and frantic guitar solo stressed by a bass and drums battery.
On the other side is evoked an electric ballad in a Hendrixian style, a guitar that delicately gathers a false nonchalance hiding an underlying violence that bursts with a sudden acceleration of the rhythm.

Com
Since 2012, O I S E A U X - T E M P Ê T E [wazo-tɑ̃.pɛːt] have been making instrumental and free-music that's heavy, provocative, and in no way intended for just a casual listen. The band, formed in Paris, is the core duo Frédéric D. Oberland & Stéphane Pigneul beside drummers Ben Mc Connell, Sylvain Joasson or Jean-Michel Pirès. It is this Mediterranean Sea that OISEAUX-TEMPÊTE chose to roam. On their DEBUT album (2013), they intertwine their creative process with the photographer Stéphane C. in order to document the existential conflict caused by the political and economic turmoil in Greece. The year after, the band invited a selection of kindred spirits and remixers to lend their talents to RE-WORKS featuring Scanner, Justin Small's Do Make Say Think, Saåad, Witxes. For ÜTOPIYA? (2015) the travels moved to Istanbul and Sicily, the group expanded with the addition of Gareth Davis & G.W.Sok (The Ex's former vocalist) providing the food for its urgent energy and indomitable drive. Including the same previous guests, UNWORKS & RARITIES (2016) features also ondes martenot's virtuoso Christine Ott. Commanding more than just your ears, from guts to gray matter, OISEAUX-TEMPÊTE will hijack your insides.

PZK - Les filles adorent - 2009
Dance-pop

Album: PZK (RYM: 1.54/5)

Bilboard:
French pop group PZK have scored a string of hits with their upbeat mélange of electro-pop, hip-hop, and dance music while their lyrics take playful aim at the obsessions of the typical teenage boy, including girls, school, partying, girls, pizza, video games, loud music, and girls. PZK was formed in 2006 by five longtime friends: MC, producer, and DJ KBC (aka Clement Simpelaere), MC JLB (aka Hugo Jeans Louis Baptiste Blondel), producer Baobab (aka Antoine Delbeare), MC Djouzy Djouz (aka Mendji Tebabes), and MC Olf (aka Florent Pyndhia). The guys began writing funny rap lyrics just for fun while they were in their early teens, and as their skills improved, they started recording their work and passing it around. Their podcasts and mixtapes began attracting a large following on the internet, and after a few successful television appearances and a successful co-release with another French hip-hop act, Obscene Kids, PZK scored a record contract with Warner Music Group. Their first single, 2009's "La Filles Adorent," was a major hit in France, and the group's first full-length album, simply titled PZK, appeared a few months later. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Refrain :
Les filles adorent
Être au Top
De leur Forme
Pour Nous Autres
Nous les hommes
Faire du sport
Baiser jusqu'aux aurores

Jlb :

Ref : (4x)
Les filles adorent
Être au Top
De leur Forme
Pour Nous Autres
Nous les hommes
Faire du sport
Baiser jusqu'aux aurores.

Les filles adorent ! ! !

Girls just love it

Girls just love it

(chorus)
Girls just love
to be in
prime shape
just for us
us, the men.
Exercise
Fuck till morning

Jlb:
Girls just love to stroll
Oiled bodies on the beach
They are delicate, they chatter with seashells
They just love loving words, kisses on various body parts
They love it when you're tender, when you tell them they're beautiful
Girls just love to appeal, to brood, to eat vegetables
and to say "No, I don't feel like I'm ready" OooWwwW
They like to doll themselves up ceaselessly, to be reassured, to hear about their nice outfits, to know someone protects them!

(chorus x2)
Girls just love
to be in
prime shape
just for us
us, the men.
Exercise
Fuck till morning

Olf:
They just love shy guys, machos or romantics
When you flatter them, they blush, they pretend they're ugly, fat or skinny.
Djouz:
While they're actually perfect.
"Hey girl, my head is not on my shoulders, rather between your legs"
Olf:
They learn everything from fashion magazines.
They cook like queens, chef recipes, they just love it when you tell them "I love you"
Djouz:
They rather hear "I make love to you" than "I fuck you"
These two girls there are nice, now something's wrong: one is cool and the other is ugly.

(chorus x2)
Girls just love
to be in
prime shape
just for us
us, the men.
Exercise
Fuck till morning

Yeah, they just love cool things, and some less cool things too.
Yeah, you know...
Girls are complicated... Well, so are guys.
Withouth them we would all be gay... Without us they would be too.
Well that's a fact, really.

(chorus x4)
Girls just love
to be in
prime shape
just for us
us, the men.
Exercise
Fuck till morning

Girls just love it!!!

Les VRP - Aujourd'hui, c'est dimanche - 1992
Alternative rock / Comedy-rock

Album: Vacances prolongées (RYM: 3.65/5)

Artist Biography by Olivier Duboc (Allmusic)

Les VRP were formed as a street act in 1988. More than Bourvil's or Les Frères Jacques' natural heirs, Les VRP were the leaders of a new breed of comedy-rock. Unpredictable on-stage and constantly good on record, Les VRP rank among the highlights of the '90s French pop. They gained their cult status thanks to their constant creativity, improvisation capacities, and a complete disrespect for anything getting too serious. They delighted their audience with continually renewed shows and cruel but funny themes. They even came up with their own homemade instruments, the most famous of which would be the "contre-bassine" (a double bass -- contre-basse in French -- made out of a trash can, a piece of cord, and a simple broom stick). They actually were indie heroes in the glory days of early-'90s French alt-rock, even compared to such classic bands as Noir Désir, Les Garçons Bouchers, Bérurier Noir, Les Wampas, or La Mano Negra. They released only three studio LPs between 1989 and 1992 (Remords et Tristes Pets, Retire les Nains de Tes Poches, Vacances Prolongées), but Les VRP's members continued variously successful careers and collaborations in such projects as Les Nonnes Troppo, Néry, Stella, or Les Suprêmes Dindes. Their influence lived on in the followed years with the spawning of a whole bunch of bands claiming their inheritance, mixing their spirit with more traditional elements of French songwriting, and among which can be found Les Hurlements de Léo or Oldelaf & Monsieur D.

Today is Sunday

Today is Sunday, and Jean-Louis is happy
It's his birthday, he just turned 16
His dad is proud of him, he's a man now
Thus he can take him, to go hunting for pheasants.

Today is Sunday, it's the Lord's day
He just needs to pray that his little sister will be cured
Suffering from mongolism to the highest degree
She goes to Sunday School, but freightens the priest

Today is Sunday, a big day for Jean-Louis
His dad offered him a wonderful rifle
He rushes to the backyard, looking to kill a duck
But all he finds is Brigitte swinging on the swings

Today is Sunday, it's the Lord's day
The little sister will need a lot of prayers
Shot down by Jean-Louis, three bullets right in the chest
"Not bad for a beginner," said... the doctor!

Jacqueline François - Mademoiselle de Paris - 1948
Chanson

Universal (google translate):
Jacqueline Guillemautot, born January 30, 1922 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, receives a bourgeois education and learns the piano in her childhood. Later, as the war rumbles, she admires charming singers like Jean Sablon or Leo Marjane.

Happy Meetings
After trials at the cinema, she finally chose the song and entered the scene under the name of Jacqueline François. During a radio interview, the debutante meets Loulou Gasté. The guitarist proposes to record the titles "Gentleman" and "Ca n'était pas origina" for his publishing house.

It is then the singer Henri Decker who is interested in her. Before becoming her husband, he presented Jacques Canetti, Polydor records, which made him record his first hit "C'est le printemps" (adaptation of "It Might As Well Be Spring"), Grand Prix of the disc in 1948. The same year, she created the classic "Mademoiselle de Paris" with the great orchestra of Paul Durand. This title takes Jacqueline François on all the stages of the world.

Distinguished singer
Became a singer greatly appreciated to the clear diction, Jacqueline François connects the successes, of «Bal de nuit», «Trois fois merci» (created by Renée Lebas), «Main dans la main» with her husband Henri Decker, «Tu n'peux pas t'figurer "(Suzy Delair) and" Les Lavandières du Portugal ", new Grand Prix in 1955.

The interpreter also adds to his repertoire centered on feelings French adaptations of American standards, such as that of "Nature Boy" (1948). In 1950, she made her first tour in America, from the United States to Brazil, where her records sell very well. Always sponsored by Jacques Canetti, she multiplies the successes ("Perdue", "Jezebel", "La Marie-Vison", "Padam padam" before Edith Piaf, "Boléro" ...) and is the first singer to have sold Million records in 1953. A major Salle Pleyel recital celebrates the event.

In the mid-sixties, feeling overwhelmed by the vogue Rive Gauche and the wave yéyé, Jacqueline abandons the song. She returns there punctually in 1971 ("Come to Paris"), 1974 and 1984 ("Central Park"), before extinguishing on March 7, 2009 in a great anonymity.

Trois petits tours
Un bonjour
Elle oublie qu'elle a pleuré d'amour

Elle vole à petits pas pressés
Elle court vers les Champs-Elysées
Et donne un peu de son déjeuner
Aux moineaux des Tuileries
Elle fredonne
Elle sourit...
Et voilà Mademoiselle de Paris.

Mademoiselle from Paris

She is called Mademoiselle from Paris
And her life is somewhat our life
Her realm it is the Rivoli street
Her fate it is to dress the others
She is said to is a humble seamstress
And, though it is true that she is not tall
So many bouquets of flowers and garlands
she scattered on our paths

(Chorus)
She sings a tune from her faubourg
She dreams of love pledges
She cries and quite often
Mademoiselle from Paris

She gives all the talent she has got
To give a ball at the Opera
And rushes to the Porte des Lilas (Gate of the Lilacs)
Mademoiselle from Paris
The weather is fair
And, up there
She goes to sow a heart to her mantle

But the heart of a child from Paris
It is just like the bouquets of violets
One ties it to a bodice on a Saturday
On Sunday one loses it in the party
Farewell dance hall, farewall boy
There she is alone with her sorrow
And she starts the week again
And she starts the song again :

(Chorus)

She gives a bit of her twenties
To create a spring collection
And alone she goes to dream on a bench
Mademoiselle from Paris
Three little steps around
A good morning
She forgets she has been in love and crying

She flies in small hurried steps
She runs to the Champs-Elysées
And gives a bit of her lunch
To the sparrows of the Tuileries
She hums
She smiles...
And here is Mademoiselle from Paris

Translator comments:
"On dit qu'elle est petite main" : "petite main" is an old fashioned expression meaning a low-rank seamstress. The expression seems to be a bit pejorative (at the same time it sounds cute to me as a XXIth century native French-speaking person, but it was probably pejorative at the time). I found more general translations as "lackey" or "gofer" on a forum, but it sounds really too pejorative. I translated by "humble seamstress".
"Elle pleure et plus souvent qu'à son tour" : the expression "plus souvent qu'à son tour" is difficult to translate. The literal meaning is "more often than in her turn". The general meaning is : "quite often". I don't know exactly how to find an equivalent in English. "More often than she'd want", maybe ?

Francis Dhomont - Je te salue, vieil océan ! - 1998 - Classical & Electronic
Classical / Electracoustic

Artist Biography by François Couture (Allmusic)

Born in France, electro-acoustic composer Francis Dhomont divided the second half of his life between Paris and Montreal. Gifted with a sense of the narrative never matched, he is able to tell captivating tales through acousmatic art. The two parts of his Cycle of Depths works, the albums Sous le Regard d'un Soleil Noir (1981) and Foret Profonde (1996), remain some of the most enduring examples of musique concrète, transcending the genre to touch the core of mankind.

Born in 1926 in Paris, Francis Dhomont came to musique concrète through classical music. He studied with Ginette Waldmeier, Charles Koechlin, and Nadia Boulanger. Stumbling upon musique concrète at about the same time Pierre Schaeffer did, he abandoned musical composition around 1953 to create only electro-acoustic music. Little is known of his works before 1972, as the composer repudiated them. Sous le Regard du Soleil Noir introduced him to a relatively larger audience, the album becoming a classic of the genre and a source of inspiration for many sound artists. He created many acousmatic works playing on sound and meaning, but his best results were obtained through the use of dream-like narratives and "cinema for the ear." His work in the 1990s grew even more evocative, culminating in the 60-minute piece Foret Profonde, a fantasy on fairy tales through the works of Bruno Bettelheim.

Dhomont was also very active as a theorist. He edited several issues of magazines on electro-acoustic music (L'Espace du Son, Circuit), created radio programs for Radio-Canada and Radio-France, taught electro-acoustic composition at the Universite de Montreal where he maintained a strong influence on younger composers, and co-founded the Canadian Electroacoustic Community. His work has been recognized internationally through numerous awards and prizes, including the Magisterium of the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition in 1988. In February 2001 he received a career grant (60,000 dollars Canadian over two years) from the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec, an incredible achievement for an avant-garde artist.

Dhomont's work has won many international awards including at the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition (France), the Magisterium Prize in 1988, Prix Ars Electronica in 1992 (Linz, Austria) and others. In 1997, as the winner of the Canada Council for the Arts' Lynch-Staunton Prize, he was supported by the DAAD for a residence in Berlin. He was recently awarded a prestigious career grant by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Dhomont is the editor of several electroacoustic music journals, and has produced many radio programs for Radio-Canada and Radio-France.

«Vieil océan, ô grand célibataire… dis-moi donc si tu es la demeure du prince des ténèbres. … parce que je me réjouirai de savoir l’enfer si près de l’homme.» — «Chant I», Les chants de Maldoror (1869), Lautréamont (1846-70)

The ocean of which we are speaking here is that evoked by Lautreamont in his fantastic imprecations of the Songs of Maldoror - some of which are said by Marc-Henri Boisse. An excessive and satanic universe still attached to romanticism but which prefigures surrealist poetry. These storms, surges, surf, hurricanes have little to do with reality: a metaphorical ocean, a maritime archetype, of which, with the exception of very few sound pickup, all the sound material was Obtained by treatment of acoustic sounds or by synthesis.

I greet you, old ocean! Was produced in 1998 in the studios of the International Electroacoustic Music Institute of Bourges (IMEB, France) and was created on 31 May 1999 within the framework of Synthèse, the International Electroacoustic Music Festival in Bourges (France). The final version of I greet you, old ocean! - which cancels and replaces the previous one of 1998 - was entirely revised in 2000-04 in the composer's studio in Montreal and was created on 5 June 2005 within the framework of Synthèse, the International Electroacoustic Music Festival in Bourges, France, . It is commissioned by the International Electroacoustic Music Institute of Bourges (IMEB, France).

Hail thee, ye ancient ocean!

Ye ancient ocean, would you tell me whether the Lord of Darkness dwells in your depths?
Tell me!
Tell me! Tell me, ocean, also whether the breath of Satan breeds the storms that heave salty waters up to the clouds.
You just have to tell me.
For I would rejoice to know hell so close to Man.

The songs of Maldoror... First song.

I saw, during all my life, without a single exception, narrow-shouldered men doing stupid and numerous actions, making their brethren stupid and corrupting souls by any means.
I would rejoice to know hell so close to us.

I want to hail you, and bid myself farewell, ye crystal-waved ancient ocean.
My eyes are getting wet with plentiful tears, and going on is beyond me.
For I feel the time has come to go back to the brutal-looking men.
Now let's keep going, let's try harder and fulfill with a sense of duty our destiniy on this earth.
Hail thee, hail thee, ye ancient ocean!

Woodkid - Iron - 2013
Pop / Chamber pop / neofolk

Album: Golden Age (RYM: 3.09/5)

Artist Biography by Jon O'Brien (Allmusic)

Stepping out from behind the camera, Yoann Lemoine became one of the few music video directors to embark on a recording career of his own, with a number of releases under the guise of Woodkid. Born in Lyon in 1983, he studied illustration and animation at the Emile Cohl School before landing jobs on Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles and Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.
In between shooting promos for the likes of Katy Perry ("Teenage Dream"), Taylor Swift ("Back to December"), and Lana Del Rey ("Born to Die," "Blue Jeans"), he recorded the Iron EP and the Run Boy Run EP. His self-directed video for "Run Boy Run" won Lemoine an MVPA Award for Best Director of the Year, and a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video. His debut album as Woodkid, The Golden Age, arrived in March 2013.
The album received largely enthusiastic reviews, and fared well commercially, rising to number two on the French album charts, and going Top Ten in Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. The young creative went on tour to support the album, with a groundbreaking performance at London’s Brixton Academy alongside the BBC Orchestra.
2014 started off well for Woodkid, with his having been invited to perform and partake in a discussion about the New York minimalist movement with Philip Glass at the Museum of Modern Art of Saint Etienne. Later that year he won the award for Best Stage Performer at the Les Victoires de la Musique.
He returned in 2016, having collaborated with German pianist Nils Frahm on a soundtrack for French photographer JR’s short film Ellis. During July of 2016, he delivered another highly innovative performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which featured a whole host of guests including Son Lux and Guillaume Brière.

AllMusic Review by Heather Phares

It's beyond cliche to call sweeping, orchestral music "filmic," but in the case of music video director Yoann Lemoine's debut album as Woodkid, The Golden Age, the term fits. Though he's worked with Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Lana Del Ray, Lemoine's own music is more in line with Antony & the Johnsons -- lavish, often torchy songs that pair dramatic backdrops with his charmingly imperfect vocals. While Antony fans will probably hear a lot to like on The Golden Age, Woodkid's approach isn't as intimate; instead, Lemoine's focus is often on the massive sounds around him. Those sounds are undeniably impressive, particularly on the title track, which opens the album with slowly building strings and brass that eventually unfold into dramatic, suite-like movements, and on "Run Boy Run," which has all the drama of a spaghetti Western score. At times, Lemoine's vocals and songwriting threaten to get lost in the sheer amount of music surrounding them, but just when it seems like it's all too much, he reins things in on "Boat Song" and "Where I Live," both of which suggest he should pare things down more often. Still, Lemoine gets a surprising amount of range out of his maximalist approach, from the more classical-leaning "Stabat Mater" to "I Love You," which with its samples and intricate beats, is the closest Woodkid comes to a contemporary pop song. A beautiful, if at times exhausting album, The Golden Age shows Lemoine is skilled at making music as well as music videos.

Deep in the ocean, dead and cast away
Where innocence’s burn in flames
A million mile from home, I’m walking ahead
I’m frozen to the bones, I am

A soldier on my own, I don’t know the way
I’m riding up the heights of shame
I’m waiting for the call, the hand on the chest
I’m ready for the fight, and fate

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head,
The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls, the number of deads
The rising of the horns, ahead
From the dawn of time to the end of days
I will have to run, away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste
Of the blood on my lips, again

This deadly burst of snow is burning my hands,
I’m frozen to the bones, I am
A million mile from home, I’m walking away
I can’t remind your eyes, your face

Il me faudra fuir
