Richard Cook & Brian Morton - The Penguin Guide to Jazz

Post by Rob » Mon Jul 25, 2016 8:51 pm

Okay, I do not own this book and neither have I read it, but it seems interesting for Acclaimed Music. It is basically like the title says a jazz guide, written by two jazz experts. The book lists and rates 1001 jazz albums. Is was frequently updated between 1992 and 2010.

The most interesting thing about it for Acclaimed Music is that it also contained three all-time best lists (dropped in the last edition of the book, released in 2010): two personal favorite lists by both writers, named Crowned albums and a third one named Core Collection. The Core Collection is a so-called objective list of the most important jazz album and might perhaps be eligible for AM.

Here is the book:
http://www.penguin.com/book/the-penguin ... ian_Morton

Here is the list of the Core Collection and the Crowned albums:
http://www.tomhull.com/ocston/nm/notes/pjazz-core.php

Is the Core Collection eligible? If so, how do we handle the changes in the list in varying editions? If it is eligible I'm happy to post the list in this forum.

I own the 6th edition from 2002 and the ratings are already included on AM. I use the crown as the highest rating.

There is no core collection in my edition, but even if there was I might not have included it, as it feels redundant with two ratings/lists from the same book. And I prefer the subjective opinions.

Ah yes, I now see it. I overlooked it, because I was looking for it among the all time lists and not the guide lists. I can see your reasoning for not updating it further.

Henrik, in the 2010 edition, Richard Cook & Brian Morton ditched the whole rating and catalogue idea because of space problems in favour of a regular 1001 albums list of what they consider the best. I managed to find the book in .mobi format, and I further managed to find a reader for such e-book format. Would you be interested in the list?

Thought I'd do this: I've written down the list already. There are exactly 1001 entries, however, I want to point out that Cook & Morton did cheat a lot by including several multiple entries for albums in sequences of Vol. 1, Vol. 2, etc. into a single entry. There are even a couple quintuple entries! There's also a big headscratcher with Clifford Brown & Max Roach's Alone Together: The Best of the Mercury Years being included under two different entries: one for Brown and another for Roach.

No matter what, the album entries don't feature a release date for the album, but a recording date and a catalogue reference. I've decided to present the entries as Artist name | Album title | Catalogue number; and at the moment I'm going through the list checking all entries to break down the multiple entries and correcting the occasional catalogue number errors or mentioning that I didn't find this particular entries online. I'm done up to the (recording) year 1965, which is more or less half of the list, so I decided to post what I had checked already, and I'll post the rest as I finish with it. Of course, the first decades are piled up compilations, but there might be a couple live recordings lost in the rest.

Here's the list:

And with this I'm done! I'll just add as a final sidenote that I didn't find all these references exactly as they are presented in the book, but rather as variations of them (e.g. a space between the numbers and so on). All in all, I didn't have too much trouble, except for a few real rarities.
