Help!

Post by Stephan »

While several people have already helped out a ton (thanks, Zorg, Listy, nicolas, Gillingham, Moonbeam--hope I'm not forgetting anyone here) there is still some work to be done. For the people who have claimed one of the things to be transferred, please let me know if you're still planning to do so. For everyone else, please help out when you have a moment of spare time.

1) Critic lists
2007 lists - Not taken
2008 lists - Not taken
2009 lists - Taken by nicolas
2010 lists - Taken by Zorg
2011 lists - Not taken
2000s EOD lists - Not taken

2) Important topics
This includes pretty much all the topics in the stickied History of AM forum polls topic. All topics marked in red in that topic are still located on the old boards. Please post in that topic which polls you've copied to these boards, and these topics should go in their own respective forums (i.e. either "Music, music, music" or "Films, movies, motion pictures").

*** I'm asking everyone to use one common account to post the old topics, so if you want to help please send me PM and I will give you access to this profile. When using the Old Forums account to ask questions, please sign with your regular username to avoid confusion ***

The html layout we used on the old boards does not work on these new boards for security purposes, so you will have to convert some of the layout. This should be pretty simple if you just use the 'Replace' function in Word or Wordpad. Here are some common tags that may need to be changed:

<a href=www.link.com> to
</a> to
<i> and </i> to and
<b>, </b>, <strong> and </strong> to and

Ok. I'm specifically tackling the 2011 EOY album and song lists.

Zorg

edit: scratch that, I'll let someone with a bit more nous do that. I'll be the guy who does the EOY archive.

edit again: Can you just check that I've done 1997 right Stephan? If so, I'll move on and do the rest. Just to check that I'm not being stupid.

I'll take the All-time albums polls.
Question about them: Should I be importing the full results (with pictures, who placed it where, etc.) or just the list?
Also, I have the complete archives from the AM World Cup. Would you like that as well?

If you have a look at the "Films.." section, you can see how I did it with the film poll. That's probably the ideal option, because people will tend to have put quite a lot of work into the polls. For the older polls where there is less layout I'd say you can simply copy the text.

It would be best if you could copy all the lists into one single topic for every year. That way all links on acclaimedmusic.net can point to one topic on these boards; the links to the old forum will be useless in the future so we don't need those.

Oh, and please post them in the EOY archives forum. That way every year has its own topic in there.

Just to be sure: I post the results from the old forum in a (appropriately named, but basically random) new topic over here in 'music, music, music'?
I guess you adjust the links in the History of AM Forum Polls-topic afterwards?

Edit: I just looked around and I know enough to get started.

We should give credit to the original conductor of the polls in the posts, I'm assuming?

I think every poll/game manager will have to recreate a new thread
I will post the new 90's poll threads tomorrow morning European time, ie in about 10 hrs
I'll copy paste the rules and already posted lists into the new thread for 1990

I'm now done with all the old EOY archives (1970-2000). If there's anything else which is quite simple to be done, I'll be happy to some more on.

Hi everyone. I'm aboard on this new board too... :)
But I'm not sure if I understood the whole thing correctly. Does this new board implies that sooner or later the old forum is going to dissapear on the Internet? And the old polls are going to be substituted by the copied-and-pasted ones without the original dates and (worse enough) without the live comments? If the answer is yes this is tragic!! Sorry Henrik for using such a big word but that's the word that describe more accurately my feelings. Am I the only one thinking like that?
Anyway I like the new layout of this new board and I'm sure we are going to have a lot of good moments here.
I'm writing on this thread because I'm offering my help too. I volunteer to copy and paste the 1900-1949 poll, the 50s poll and the 60s poll and also the yearly lists from this polls (I don't want to see it vanishing from the net!). But I'm afraid I need a month or even more because I want to copy the comments too including "originally posted by nicolas on 12/23/2011" or something like that.

Henrik and Stephan, this new forum/board is looking very snazzy! (And just for the record, I think the security settings on here are completely sensible, and asking nicolas to be moderator alongside the two of you was an excellent decision - it takes away any concerns I might have had about overly strict "censorship" or our forum being reduced to politically correct dullness.)

Honorio, I agree with you that it's sad that so many great comments would be lost by closing the old forum (if that is indeed the plan... I'm assuming it won't be cost-effective to keep both forums on the internet). I revisit old polls from time to time, and I find the comments as helpful (if not more helpful) than the actual lists. So, personally I'm really pleased that you are willing to re-post your pre-50s, 50s and 60s polls in detail. As I keep saying to you, those are supremely informative and insightful resources for anyone wishing to learn more about good 20th century music.
Gillingham wrote:Since I a finished the Artists Poll, I can proceed with the EOY polls.
Don't worry about the 2011 EOY polls. I'll re-post them when I get time over the next couple of days as I still need to post individual lists from the final round of the songs poll, as promised.
...will keep us together.

Henrik & Stephan, I don't know but is there a way to recover the forum data for free if it costs money to keep it open (and locked) ?

Henrik basically has two options for the old boards, a free forum or a premium option for which he has to pay money. The free forum only allows a small number of topics, so he currently has the premium boards but they run out in August, at which time all oldest posts will be deleted until there are so few posts that you can get the free version again.

So yes, I am afraid that most of these things will be lost, unless we manually start deleting every single unimportant post on the old boards and even then I think we might simply have too many important posts. It's a shame, but there's not much we can do about it. All we can do is transfer as much as possible.

I'm having some issues with the album pictures from the '08. (just look at Rock Bottom and Mezzanine).
Is there any way to size them?

You can size images using the [imgsize] tag. For instructions hover over the button in the post screen.

Edit: I've fixed the Rock Bottom image as an example.
