Unacclaimed IV Elimination 64.1

Post by whuntva »

We now move on to the win-or-go-home round. Here, votes are worth only one point. Pick the song from each pairing you want to see adcance. Ties broken now by sudden-death overtime.

Due to the sheer volume of songs, only sixteen per week will be unveiled. The Round of 64 will last for four weeks.

The tournament is structured so that the first listed group from Week One will take on a runner-up from the first listed group of Week Three. And so on and so forth. Two songs from the same week would not face each other theoretically until at least the quarterfinals. Two songs from the same group cannot meet unless they both make the final--which did actually happen in Unacclaimed III and almost happened in Unacclaimed II.

Voting for this round ends 12/4 at 11:59 PM.

Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother vs.
Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye

Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head vs.
Cuts - Bunsen Burner

Disco Inferno - The Long Dance vs.
Wax Taylor - Our Dance

Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi vs.
Girls Aloud - Can't Speak French

Cymande - The Message vs.
Aphex Twin - flim

Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love vs.
James Fountain - Seven Day Lover

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun vs.
Syd Matters - Obstacles

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution
The Three Degrees - Dirty Ol' Man

Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye (IRL)

This is my favorite Hozier song, even over "Take me to Church". I think it stands little chance against possible favorite Mari Boine, but I'm voting here anyway.

Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head (USA)

A true original. Not to be discounted anywhere.

Wax Taylor - Our Dance (FRA)

Just had more to offer.

Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love (USSR)

Really beautiful piece, but James put up a greater challenge than expected.

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun (USA)

Nothing like it in this whole tourney.

The Three Degrees - Dirty Ol' Man (USA)

Bill Fay didn't do much for me.

Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother vs. Hozier - Arsonist’s Lullabye
Both good, but had to choose one.

Eliza Rickman - Pretty Little Head vs. Cuts - Bunsen Burner
I've said before that some female voices piss me off. Eliza Rickman's typical indie female singer-songwriter voice is one such voice. The Cuts song is not great, but good enough for my vote.

Disco Inferno - The Long Dance vs. Wax Taylor - Our Dance
The start of "The Long Dance" is so euphoric! Not the biggest fan of the vocals, but they are passable.

Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi vs. Girls Aloud - Can't Speak French
Amadou & Miriam make a great groove, and Girls Aloud can't keep up.

So far, haven't flipped any of my choices, meaning all my winners here had higher placing in Round 1 than my losers. In retrospect, not surprising.
Predicted winner of these eight: Amadou & Miriam. Desired winner: Disco Inferno or Mari Boine

This forum has great taste, and repeat listening of these songs has been very rewarding (so much so that I've boosted Eliza, Wax, Syd, and Girls Aloud up a rating - even though it's still not enough to give any of them the win).

6. Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother 8
10. Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye 7

9. Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head 8
2. Cuts - Bunsen Burner 10

7. Disco Inferno - The Long Dance 8

4. Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi 9

Cymande - The Message vs.
Aphex Twin - flim
Why did these two have to be pitted against each other?! :(

Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love vs.
James Fountain - Seven Day Lover

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun vs.
Syd Matters - Obstacles
"Black Gold" feels like a spiritual journey.

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution vs.
The Three Degrees - Dirty Ol' Man
Bill Fay's song has grown on me a little, but not enough.

Not sure why I'm usually choosing the first in each matchup.

Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother: 7.5
Hozier - Arsonist’s Lullabye: 8

Very tough choice here - both are quite good. "Arsonist's Lullabye" tugs just a little more on the viscera for me.

Eliza Rickman - Pretty Little Head: 8.5
Cuts - Bunsen Burner: 7.5

Two very fine tracks again, though the decision is a bit easier. "Pretty Little Head" might be the catchiest song of the 128 nominated for this game.

Disco Inferno - The Long Dance: 6
Wax Taylor - Our Dance: 8

The spookiness of Wax Taylor is a pretty easy choice here.

Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi: 8
Girls Aloud - Can't Speak French: 10

It looks like "Can't Speak French" is going down, but at least it will bow out to a really good some in "Je pense a toi". As for Girls Aloud, I think they might be a contender for the best girl group ever. Their music is by and large very intelligent, immensely catchy, rhythmically and structurally interesting, and when at its best, completely zany. If any of you have been pleasantly surprised by "Can't Speak French", here are a few other songs of theirs that might be worth a spin:

"Biology": Boasting two different choruses, it is built around both a stomping bluesy piano bit as well as a buzzing electro workout. Mind-bendingly fun, and probably their best song.

"Call the Shots": Shimmering electropop sheen that tugs at all of the right heartstrings. That chorus is gigantic.

"Sexy! No No No...": Balls to the wall electro...punk?

"Love Machine": I read somewhere that this was voted the second most exhilarating song of all time in some poll. It's hard to argue with its effervescent thrills, taken over the edge by those "oh!"s near the end.

"Whole Lotta History": Every girl group has to have the soppy ballads, but this one has such a surprising structure, starting with one intro verse, a second and completely different verse, and a third main verse before leading into the chorus, which gives way to yet other different components. The sap is there for the taking, but it ends with an appropriately oddball "and it might sound crazy but your voice still leaves me all funky... all funky".

Cymande - The Message: 8
Aphex Twin - flim: 7

The earthy funk tones of "The Message" are enough to take the win here.

Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love: 8
James Fountain - Seven Day Lover: 7

"Declaration of Love" is a real contender, I think. Just gorgeous.

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun: 7.5
Syd Matters - Obstacles: 8

Tough pick here. "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun" is really, really interesting, and I'll give it some more spins that might see it grow on me further. But "Obstacles" won me over a little more.

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution: 7.5
The Three Degrees - Dirty Ol' Man: 7.5

Super close, but the sass of "Dirty Ol' Man" is enough to see it through.

We have a tie. We shall rectify it posthaste, but for now, here come the results.

This is my favorite quadrant of the bracket. It's a shame that four tournament favorites had to be matched up right here.

Most were decisive, though there were close calls. Once again, ten was the magic number; the first song to earn ten votes won every time.

Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother: 11
Hozier-Arsonist’s Lullabye: 3

Possible favorite Mari Boine took care of business as expected this week.

Eliza Rickman-Pretty Little Head: 5
Cuts - Bunsen Burner: 9

Tied at 2-2 but Cuts could not be caught. The only runner-up to win this week (if Disco Inferno wins the tiebreaker)

Disco Inferno - The Long Dance: 7
Wax Taylor - Our Dance: 7

Overtime to come.

Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi: 11
Girls Aloud - Can't Speak French: 4

Really liked both, but Amadou & Mariam make their title case known.

Cymande - The Message: 10
Aphex Twin - flim: 5

Cymande continues the winning streak. But the hardest challenge is next week!

Alfred Schnittke - Declaration of Love: 12
James Fountain - Seven Day Lover: 3

Schnittke pushes the envelope of the classical clause, but I accepted this anyway. Another potential favorite rolls in the highest score this week.

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun: 10
Syd Matters - Obstacles: 5

Rotary Connection still unchallenged in this tournament.

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution: 9
The Three Degrees - Dirty Ol' Man: 6

What started strong for Bill ended up seeing a surge late by Three Degrees. Bill was saved by the bell in this one.
