Films of the 1990s: 1995 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 15th of November. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 1994 there's is still two weeks left to do it.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1995:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

The top 10 is so amazing it's almost impossible to put them in order. Maybe my favorite (or at least second) movies by Jafar Panahi, Emir Kusturica and Wong Kar-Wai. The favorite of Before trilogy (and second best movie by Linklater after Boyhood). The favorite Ghibli-movie after Miyazaki's very bests and Grave of the Fireflies. The best of Michael Mann. The second favorite by Terry Gilliam (after Monty Python and Holy Grail). And even Casino may be my favorite Scorsese...

Question: Should Pride and Prejudice (mini-series) be eligible? If it's it's gonna be very high on my list...

1. Smoke
2. The Usual Suspects
بادکنک سفيد3. [The White Balloon]
4. Before Sunrise
5. Underground
6. La haine [Hate]
7. 堕落天使 [Fallen Angels]
8. Casino
9. 耳をすませば [Whisper of the Heart]
10. Heat
11. 12 Monkeys
12. Dead Man
13. Se7en
14. Welcome to the Dollhouse
15. Blue in the Face
16. Safe
17. Go Now
18. The Basketball Diaries
19. La cité des enfants perdus [The City of Lost Children]
20. Desperado

Edit added Welcome to Dollhouse. Out: To Die for.

As to Pride and Prejudice mini-series, I'm in the ineligible camp, all the accolades it earned (BAFTA, Emmy, 100 greatest TV programmes, etc.) clearly puts it in the boob tube category.

My Top 20 (solid year for films):
1. Toy Story [anim] (John Lasseter, USA)
2. Babe (Chris Noonan, Australia)
3. The Usual Suspects (Bryan Singer, USA)
4. Koukaku Kidoutai [Ghost in the Shell] [anim] (Mamoru Oshii, Japan)
5. Leaving Las Vegas (Mike Figgis, USA)
6. Seven (David Fincher, USA)
7. Safe (Todd Haynes, USA)
8. Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch, USA)
9. Clueless (Amy Heckerling, USA)
10. Underground (Emir Kusturica, Yugoslavia)
11. Dead Man Walking (Tim Robbins, USA)
12. Xich Lo (Cyclo) (Tran Anh Hung, Vietnam)
13. To Vlemma Tou Odyssea (Ulysses' Gaze) (Theodoros Angelopoulos, Greece)
14. Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater, USA)
15. La haine [Hate] (Mathieu Kassovitz, France)
16. La Cérémonie [The Ceremony] (Claude Chabrol, France)
17. Antonias Welt [Antonia's Line] (Marleen Gorris, The Netherlands)
18. Duoluo Tianshi [Fallen Angels] (Wong Kar-Wai, Hong Kong)
19. Maborosi no Hikari [Maborosi] (Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan)
20. Mimi wo Sumaseba [Whisper of the Heart] [anim] (Yoshifumi Kondo, Japan)

Petri wrote:Question: Should Pride and Prejudice (mini-series) be eligible? If it's it's gonna be very high on my list...

I think this is where the term 'mini-series' can fall apart. Sure, it's a 6-episode series with a planned ending; but aren't a lot of British television shows short and contained? I believe 6 episodes is standard season length in the UK; I know at least Spaced and The Office had 2 seasons of exactly 6 episodes, and checking a couple others shows this to be the case. If we're going to include what could pass as either a mini-series or a standard length television show, this can start blurring the lines.

I guess my question is, what makes a mini-series? Is it simply the idea of a self-contained serial? Because there are many countries where open-ended series aren't the norm. There has to be some other factor I'm not immediately aware of, but what makes Pride and Prejudice a mini-series and Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop standard television shows? All three tell a story with a planned length (6 episodes for Pride and Prejudice, standard season length in the UK, and 26 episodes for NGE and Cowboy Bebop, a standard series length in Japan). Cowboy Bebop could easily be discounted because a lot of episodes could stand alone, but Neon Genesis Evangelion is very much a singular story comparable to a mini-series.

While I would love to nominate Neon Genesis Evangelion (it would place high on my list for 1995), I don't think this is the place. As I'm unfamiliar with Pride and Prejudice, I'd like to know what makes it different. Most of the mini-series I see get featured in film discussions have specific reasons; a lot of them because they were either specifically released as films in some form (Berlin Alexanderplatz, Bergman's longer works), or the mini-series could be argued to be a series of films (which I believe to be the case for Heimat). Could each episode of Pride and Prejudice be considered a film in itself (on the level of, say, Les Vampires)? Has the mini-series seen a theatrical release? I think the answer has to be 'yes' to one of those two questions for it to be allowed.

How about 'A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies',I guess that won't be eligible either?

I guess that's the other circumstance; it appears to be a made-for-TV movie, which I assume are eligible (being 'movies' and all), but split into parts due to length. In the end, that's still a singular work, if atypically distributed. Could Pride and Prejudice be argued to be a film split into episodes simply due to overall length?

This is a tricky subject; in the end, my questioning is less opposition to Pride and Prejudice (it's only 6 episodes, so it's not too much to ask us to watch it) and more trying to understand where we draw the line. It comes down to two things for me:
1. What is the distinction between something titled a 'mini-series' such as Pride and Prejudice and a regular series with a fixed length and focused plot like Neon Genesis Evangelion?
2. Should it just be left open; should all things that could be argued as fitting the 'film' formula be eligible, since there are only a few mini-series that actually have a chance of qualifying for the final?

Though it seems odd to me that mini-series have an easier time placing than short film. Perhaps we should consider another possibility; instead of featuring mini-series and short films in the main yearly lists, we could do two shorter lists, one for just mini-series/TV specials and one for just shorts, both covering the entire decade. So, we do 10 yearly traditional film surveys, then a decade-wide mini-series survey (perhaps 3-5 moving to the final), and finally a decade-wide short film survey (perhaps 5). Does anyone else think that sounds like a good alternative? Then we can just skip this argument entirely for most of the topics.

I've assumed documentaries and TV movies are allowed, and I sometimes include one or two. A separate poll for mini-series and maybe shorts seems like a good idea, but maybe one all-time poll for mini-series would be better than for each decade separately, because there aren't many mini-series before 1980, while there or lots more recently. For shorts the situation is opposite. In the first half of the century there were many classic short films, while they have become less important more recently.

For the distinction I prefer to follow imdb to avoid endless discussions. It's a mini-series if imdb says it's a mini-series.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I also agree that Pride and Prejudice (or any that kind of tv-mini-series) shouldn’t be eligible because of the reasons BleuPanda and Dexter pointed out. Like bonnielaurel said documentaries (and tv-movies) are eligible so I think A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies is eligible (IMDb says it’s a TV-movie). I like Bleu’s idea for separate poll for mini-series (+ tv-sepcials) and for short films. However maybe it’s too late to do it for 1990s movies (Heimat 2 is already in the final and Riget is doing quite well at the 1994 poll). bonnielaurel also pointed out that there aren’t that many mini-series from older decades (Heimat, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Decalogue, Brideshead Revisited came in mind right away from 80s and at least two first are eligible nevertheless (maybe Decalogue too)). So I think we should do an all-time tv-series poll that included mini-series and tv-specials too (I’m too busy to host it now).

But what about the best short-films of the decade poll? There are a lot of hidden short gems from every decade that are maybe quite easy to see if you just know the title. I think this could be a separate poll (or should there be 150 feature films and for example 10 short-films in the final) I haven’t marked/rated (the most) short-films I’ve seen so it’s a bit hard to make a list but does anyone support this idea or should we continue with current rules (short-films are eligible).

I think it's too late to do either this time around, but we should have an 'other' category for future decade polls that simply covers all works outside of the standard format (shorts, specials, mini-series, etc.). I'd also suggest doing this 'other' poll first instead of last, so people actually have time to check out the longer works.

Looks like RYM says it is a 1995 movie but according to IMDb it was showed in Deauville Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival in 1994. It was also in normal(?) distribution in Italy and Netherlands in 1994. The RYM release date (19 May) was its official release date in USA (it was showed in States in Sundance FIlm Festival and Santa Barbara Film Festival + it was in normal distribution at least in France, Germany, Sweden and UK before that)). So maybe we should use IMDb release dates from now on because it's harder to change those release dates (so they are more reliable). So Little Odessa is a 1994 movie.

*Welcome to the Dollhouse was #12 of 1996 poll on last round.
A movie with over 100 points missed the final :o . I guess many of the movies at #16-#20 would have qualified if they were 1996 movies.
The highest not US movie is Undergrond (#10) so very good year for US movie I think. The highest climber (from last round) was Safe (from #50 to #9 with 184(!) points). I guess I'm not the only one who hadn't seen this before 2010 (the only movie in top 15 - I saw it few years ago). I bought Theo Angelopoulos dvd-box (with Ulysses' Gaze and many more) but I didn't have time to watch it yet (I have wathched a movie practically every day since I received the box though).
