✅ Frank Sinatra - Various Song lists

Post by arnaud »

I have three lists from books on Sinatra. I'm not sure these are eligible.

Ed O'Brien & Robert Wilson, Sinatra 101: 101 best recordings and the stories behind them (1996)

https://www.amazon.com/Sinatra-101-reco ... 1572971657

The selections were done by the two authors but also by real Sinatra experts, "including among others: Billy May, Sinatra's long-time pianist Bill Miller, Sinatra's long-time guitarist Al Viola, and Jonathan Schwartz" (Amazon comments)
I haven't got the book, only the song list, found on the web. I have added the recording and release dates : since it's a strictly chronological list, I'm pretty sure these informations are the good ones. (Most of those songs, if not all, were recorded several times by Sinatra).

Note :
- "When the World was Young" is the only exception in the chronological order : it's a track recorded for Capitol after Sinatra had begun recording for Reprise, but the authors have put the track after the other Capitol selections.
- "All the Things You Are" and "The Song is You" (Columbia period) are probably not the studio versions, but V-Discs versions (but i can't check this). (Studio versions would have been placed elsewhere in the chronological list).

Re: Frank Sinatra - Various Song lists

Post by arnaud »

Charles L. Granata, Sessions with Sinatra: Frank Sinatra and the Art of Recording (2003)
Appendix : 50 Songs That Define the Essence of Sinatra.

https://www.amazon.com/Sessions-Sinatra ... QKP63P91VE

One of the Best Book ever about Sinatra. You won't find a word about The Rat Pack, JFK, the Mafia nor Ava Gardner... only about the Music. Great Book. (Also recommended : Will Friedwald, The Song Is You, alas, with no selections)

For me, if this list is not as good as the first one, it's mainly because there's only 50 selections.
Here's what the author say about the selections : "There are fifty recordings that I believe epitomize the very essence of what the music of Frank Sinatra is all about. Within this small cache of performances, one can experience the breadth of what this book endeavors to impart: the uniqueness of his vocal style, his impeccable approach to music and recording, and his highly developed flair for the dramatic. You might note the absence of most of the "hits" that are commonly associated with Frank Sinatra. The following recordings have been chosen not for their commercial success, but for their exceptional musical value. Of course, everyone's opinion will differ and some people inay disagree with my personal selections."

The information in parenthesis are from the book. I've only added the release date at the end.

The last one is from an older book :
Vito R. Marino and Anthony C. Furfero, The Official Guide To Frank Sinatra Records And CDs (1993)

Some strange choices here.

The Marino & Granata books, wich i own, were published in New York so i guess they're american (with probably italo-american origins : that's a good point working on sinatra :P !) Charles Granata has become the greatest Sinatra expert : he's a producer at Sony Music's Legacy Recordings, where he restores Sinatra Columbia Records catalog. He's involved in all the recent major Sinatra reissues. (Every Sinatra fan would love to see him put his hand on the Capitol catalog).
I don't know for O'Brien since i don't have the book. For what i see on amazon, the book is published by Berkley (american?)
