Blanco, it seems to me that this show was about popular songs in Mexico, and not any kind of critics' list.

I think this list needs to be reevaluated. One of the most ambitious media programs for rescue the Mexican repertoire

Here is the press release
http://oncetv-ipn.net/acercade/boletin_297.htm
and
http://oncetv-ipn.net/las100favoritas/presentacion.htm

If you pay attention it's curious they are recognizing the composer and not the performer (most of the live presented were covers by another artists), but it seems it was chosen by critics and musicians. Later, they got the idea people choose their own Top Ten
http://oncetv-ipn.net/las100favoritas/
but it's not related to the previous 100 (+) selected.

Also in the show, they presented some songs not related with Mexico but probably were chosen by critics because they thought those songs were important.

panam, what kind of work could you do to find performers? If the list will be included it has to be performers chosen by the people who chose the songs. Not guesses or the most popular versions.

It was a misunderstood of mine. In the source page, it appears the songs and their artists next to the performers who made live versions during the show (some of the original chosen passed away, other ones couldn't be on the show).

I still think this list has several issues. Blanco listed for example "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens, but according to the page he linked to it just says "traditional" and who performed the song on the show. Also, the list is called "Las 100 favoritas de México", which to me doesn't sound like critics made their personal choices, but rather chosen songs that have been popular in the country over the years. This just can't be eligible as I see it.

For a certain reason, list made by Blanco change some performers (and that's why I thought it needed to be changed and I tried to show the most popular versions of those ones).

The only valid song is what is showed on the link source. No more, no less.

The title "Favoritas" could be ambiguous. As the press release show, it was targeted to a TV audience that needs to involved with the songs (at the end of the especial, they chosen their own favorite live performances). But as other titles as "1001 albums to listen before you dead" is just a way to impact. The same way of election and also with the participation of music critics and specialists (Jaime Almeida, for example)

I'm really convinced this list have to be included and this is the last I'll do for it:

First at all, you said:

"I still think this list has several issues. Blanco listed for example "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens, but according to the page he linked to it just says "traditional" and who performed the song on the show."

The list presented by Blanco has difference with the source because of a reason: the list of Blanco is the list as it was presented on TV, the source presented the songs only by composers and live cover guests on the show. That's why I misunderstood and I try to elaborate a new list (and I feel bad and I apologize because for that reason you could think this list is not eligible)

You said:

"Also, the list is called "Las 100 favoritas de México", which to me doesn't sound like critics made their personal choices, but rather chosen songs that have been popular in the country over the years."

I say again: the title could be confusing but it's not what it seems. The list was not made as popularity contest, it was made by critics asked for their best songs on popular music. "Nuestra mejores canciones" is the pre-title. And the critics are also part of the show. The use of the word "Favoritas" is related to the dynamics created with the audience (as I explained before).

"Nuestras mejores canciones. Las 100 favoritas de México es el primer programa de la televisión nacional cuyo objetivo es descubrir la favorita, más representativa y mejor canción del siglo XX de México. Este proyecto de entretenimiento cultural para toda la familia abarca un recorrido histórico-musical, en el que disfrutaremos las melodías más entrañables de las últimas décadas."

It's not a project about popularity, it's a project about choosing best songs between popular music in Mexico. It targets the family, but the way of election of the songs is on the next paragraphs.

As any Rolling Stone list prologue, they remind the collective conscious of the popular music. Next, they talk about the analysis of the songs (specific and interdisciplinary) and appears the music critics and specialists related to the chosen songs (if is would be a Top 40/ Billboard / style list they don't invite specialists, they invited any gossip celebrity to talk. Another proof is a quality related list is they mention the criteria. At the end, they also talk about a votation for people (a Top Ten) but that has no relationship with the original 100 songs list.

Henrik, I hope you take into account all this. A necessary list.

Thanks panam, but I still don't get where the source is that "La Bamba" should be credited to Ritchie Valens as the definitive version.

The credits on TV appears that way:

CANCIÓN / AUTOR
QUIEN LA HIZO FAMOSA
AÑO

(SONG /COMPOSER
WHO MADE IT FAMOUS
YEAR)

The credits on the website show only the composer and the live performers during the show. Blanco presented two of the credits presented on TV. (Song and Who Made It Famous)

I definitely trust Blanco, but I find it a bit hard to believe that he watched all the shows and noted down the credits every time. Especially since he didn't mention anything about it. So what source could he have used? Apparently it was not the link he provided.

Blanco, I hope everything is well with you. I miss you a lot! I'm sure other forumers do as well.
If you read this, please let us know where you got the information about performer of the definitive version (or who made it famous). I would like to remove my thoughts that it could be your guesses.

I hope Blanco appears soon. I've brought all the sources available and I strongly believe this list needs to be included.

Also I forgot to mention Central Once is a cultural channel promoted by the Instituto Politecnico Nacional (they are in charge of TV and public radio in Mexico).

Blanco wrote Van Morrison, who wrote the song, but the performer should be Them. Also, Antonio Carlos Jobim & Vinicius de Moraes composed/wrote "Garôta de Ipanema", but I don't think they ever recorded it together.

About Gloria, here in Latin America (at least where I live) radio stations used to play The Doors version, after time I knew the original Them version.

Check this, the Spanish language entry for the song in Wikipedia https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_ ... The_Doors)

"Gloria tuvo un considerable y sorprendente éxito en varios países del continente americano, impulsado en gran medida por el apoyo audiovisual de la recién fundada cadena de música MTV, y por ser prácticamente el último y definitivo tema inédito de The Doors para entonces, diez años después de su separación oficial."

"Gloria had a significant and surprising success in several countries of the American continent , driven largely by the audiovisual support of the newly founded MTV music chain, and for being virtually the last and final unreleased song by The Doors for then, ten years later their official separation."

As several countries of the American continent included Mexico.

The source where says "The Doors - Gloria" is from the original Las 100 Favoritas video

What record is the Jobim/De Moraes version taken from?

No, Getz/Gilberto was recorded months later and released the next year, although Jobim participate during the sessions.

I know it wasn't the first recording. For example, Jobim recorded an instrumental version on "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". But the discogs link you gave me is to the Getz/Gilberto version.

Look at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_from_Ipanema. It says nothing about a Jobim/De Moraes recording collaboration.

Perhaps someone else could help us out here? It's one of the most famous songs of all time, so I'm sure we can solve this.

"Garota de Ipanema" is found in Um Encontro no au Bon Gourmet (recorded in 1962; unofficial).
On August 2, 1962, "Garota De Ipanema" was played for the first time in a small night club of Copacabana, Au Bon Gourmet. For 40 nights, Tom, Vinicius and a talented guitarist named João Gilberto played the song for the crowd. People loved it from the very beginning. At least one of those shows was recorded but never officially (vinyl album was released by Doxy Music in 2015). In spite of the fact that "Garota De Ipanema" was already popular among the crowd in Copacabana, the first studio recording of the song was not produced by Tom and/or Vinicius. In 1963, singer Pery Ribeiro became the first artist to record this song. That same year, however, Tom Jobim was able to record the song too. He included an instrumental version of "The Girl From Ipanema" on his first American production entitled The Composer of "Desafinado" Plays. Although this version was well accepted, it did not enjoy the popularity of the next recording we all are familiar with (Getz/Gilberto version).

Believe me, I want to include this list. But as Blanco actually listed the songwriter in one of these five cases I think I will wait for him to come back and explain his source. Hopefully he will one day.

Thanks for the detailed info on "Garota de Ipanema", Dexter! As the Jobim & De Moraes recording wasn't official until 2015, it is probably another case where Blanco listed the writers and not who made it famous.
