Films of the 1990s: 1990 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

OK I start the voting thread of the 1990 movies.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 31st of August. I will open the 1991 voting in about two weeks and its deadline will be 15th of September.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1990:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

I think Twin Peaks (European pilot) shouldn't be eligible.

Asking for 20 films makes me feel painfully inadequate (the only year I'll be able to fill up is 1999, and that's only if I include a couple movies I don't actually care about). My goal this time, I guess, is to try to keep up with the winners. Here's my painfully small list for 1990 (I'm essentially putting a buffer spot between them so my list isn't overvalued):

1. Goodfellas
2. Close-Up (35)
3. Miller's Crossing (30)
4. Edward Scissorhands (25)
5. Wild at Heart (18)
6. Days of Being Wild (14)
7. Paris is Burning (10)
8. Jacob's Ladder (8)

Movies I don't care enough to vote for:
Misery
Latest from the DaDaeR
The Architects
The Mountains of the Moon
Troll 2 (though unlike the others, I do highly recommend this to everyone)

Last time we switched to the formula in which only top 15 movies get points during the 70s if I remember correctly. If more people think we should move to that earlier we can do it.
I've seen about 620 movies (+ some that I've seen as a child that I've forgotten) from 1990s (and hopefully lot more before this year ends) so I'm fine with the current formula (but also fine with that in which only 15 movies count).

1. Wild at Heart
2. 阿飛正傳 [Days of Being Wild]
3. Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö [The Match Factory Girl]
4. Life Is Sweet
5. King of New York
6. Dances With Wolves
7. Miller's Crossing
8. An Angel at My Table
9. GoodFellas
10. I Hired a Contract Killer
11. Misery
12. The Reflecting Skin
13. Edward Scissorhands
14. Jacob's Ladder
15. Total Recall
16. The Godfather: Part III
17. Back to the Future Part III
18. Die Hard 2
19. 秦俑 [A Terra-Cotta Warrior]
20. Mo' Better Blues

edit. ¡Átame! [Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!] out
Mo' Better Blues in

I'm fine with there being more for other people - the big draw for me is discovering the movies I need to see.

This one was moved to 1989 on imdb and RYM (although Wikipedia still says 1990). What do we do with it?

Oops and thanks I hadn't noticed that. If IMDb and RYM say it is a 1989 movie then it is. I'm going to edit my list (my new #20 is Mo' Better Blues).

So true! I am a 90's guy and I probably watched all the mainstream 90's movies but 1990 is a particularly weak year for excellent movies.

Some recommandations for the French films:

"Le château de ma mère" et "La gloire de mon père" (adaptation of the Pagnol's books.)
"Le mari de la coiffeuse" (Patrice Leconte)
"Milou en mai" (louis Malle)
"Nikita" (Luc Besson)
"Tatie Danielle" (Etienne Chatillez)
and, of course, one of the most beautiful film ever made :
"Cyrano de Bergerac" (Jean-Paul Rappeneau) (adaptation of Edmond Rostand play in verse, a must read french text)

Not too knowledgeable with movies made before I was born. I tried to do a Top 10 for the Noughties, and I will try again here.

1) Goodfellas
2) Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
3) Awakenings
4) The Hairdresser's Husband
5) The Match Factory Girl
6) Back to the Future III
7) The Rescuers Down Under
8) Close-Up
9) Darkman
10) Tremors

Didn't Care for Enough to Vote:

After Dark, My Sweet
Home Alone
Edward Scissorhands
Total Recall

Not to say they were "bad", they just left little impact on me.
" Ah, yes! Our meager restitution"

May I know your reasons for making this your #9 movie of 1990? I'm not trying to criticize your choice but only to enlighten me since I found it to be bad, or maybe I was trying to compare it with the novel.

The top two films are two of my favorite films of the decade. Based on what I have seen, 1990 starts declining after #8. After that, there are some surprisingly effective sequels (Predator, Gremlins, Exorcist) and a few films that, while not great art, were entertaining hits (K Cop, Pretty Woman) that remained staples on U.S. television for years and consistently sucked you in for 15 or 20 minutes. And I strongly suspect, that I will be the only vote for Rocky V, which is frequently terrible, but still pretty fun.

1. Goodfellas
2. Miller’s Crossing
3. Die Hard 2: Die Harder
4. The Godfather Part III
5. Awakenings
6. Total Recall
7. Edward Scissorhands
8. State of Grace
9. Predator 2
10. Kindergarten Cop

11. Pump Up the Volume
12. Rocky V
13. Ghost
14. Pretty Woman
15. Gremlins 2: The New Batch
16. The Exorcist III
17. Arachnophobia
18. Home Alone
19. Jacob's Ladder
20. Dick Tracy

Goodfellas dominated with 7(!) #1 votes and 13 votes in general (only bonnielaurel didn't give points for Scorsese's movie). Trust got the #3 spot with only four votes (3 of them were #1 votes). Cyrano de Bergerac would have needed Romain's vote (last time it was his #1 and this time he only recommended it). Glad to see Kaurismäki's movies did so well (although I Hired a Contract Killer didn't qualify). Last rounds top 10 movies were all in top 12 this time (and qualified).

Re: Films of the 1990s: 1990 (2016 edition)

nice to see my top 3 - (Close-Up, The Match Factory Girl, Trust) did well without my vote

The lesser known movies I could well vote in 1990 were
1) "Non, ou a vã glória de mandar" (No, or the Vain Glory of Command) (de Oliveira) - witch may be my fave movie title
2)"Tilai" (Idrissa Ouedraogo)- witch is one of the few good african movies I have seen
