Thanks for all the hard work, Jimmy, it was very appreciated. And thanks BleuPanda for his contributions. Even with the occasional bitterness, it was globally a pleasure to follow. Small personal satisfaction: Radiohead remained out of the top 3, and Bowie is a great #2. I only wish Prince, A Tribe Called Quest and Jefferson Airplane had also benefitted from their passing in the votes. Better yet, I wish they had not passed away at all and were here to enjoy their rankings with us. R.I.P. all you guys.

This whole fishy votes is bugging me though. Maybe some investigation is in order.

Eh, I don't find them that fishy. Their lists reasonably seem like what I would get from asking someone on the street (on the off chance they made one in the first place), they only seem out of place because of the fact that they're on a music forum. Perhaps they've only recently discovered AM and are looking to expand their horizons, but still wanted to participate in the poll anyway.

EDIT: for clarity, I'm referring to the "lurkers" who voted

Much thanks for running this poll, Jimmy! It was really incredible all the way through.

On some of the sub lists that are coming down the pipe now, I have to say I really love the Marvin Gaye list :music-listening:

Also, for as much as some have complained about the under 25 posts crowd "ruining" the results, I really only have one complaint with their sub list: Linkin Park in the top 20. That's just wrong.

The BleuPanda list, or, what this would have looked like if I ran it (using a modified formula of the one I used last year):

Basically, when you run these polls, you have to create a formula that links all these votes together. Part of what you have to do is adjust the number until you get the right values, usually along a curve. In simple terms to understand what I did here:
A #1 vote using either Jimmy's or my own method gets 100 points
Under Jimmy's method, a #100 gets 4.46 points, which doesn't do much of anything
I lessened the curve a bit, where #100 gets 10 points
I feel like the curve being too steep causes our results to lean too much toward the top of our lists, essentially making a #100 placement worthless. Using a less steep curve also leads to more 'consensus;' for example, we go from everyone's top 14 making it in automatically to everyone's top 11. I have included the numbers to show relative placement between our two formulas; a positive number is a gain on my formula, a negative is a loss with my formula.

Part of this is just to show how a little adjustment can entirely change the results. Even the host's methods can change how well your favorite band does.

Man I missed all the fun last week while I was moving to a new state. Going back and reading the comments and the roll out itself was so interesting. I can't believe I'm the only person that voted for Nas. I agree with the comments on page 9 about R&B getting the shaft. There are so many good R&B, funk artists that aren't on the AM lists. We should do something similar to that hip-hop thread from a while back.

Great rollout Jimmy Jazz, you put in some mad work and I love that you took your time. That makes the wait of the rollout so much better and fun-ner

Just to be clear, when I talked about the fishy votes, I wasn't talking about the acts for whom they voted, but the fact that, according to JimmyJazz and BleuPanda, some votes were extremely similar with just little variations between the rankings of the artists, which implies some organized action. Otherwise, the fact that they voted for mainstream acts with little interest in more obscure artists is their choice, and a legitimate one, again, as long as it's not an organized action against the poll.

5. Rolling Stones
Interesting. In a world without the Beatles, Bjork becomes the supreme monarch of popular music.

But, let me end this now by saying, whatever you believe, the results have been posted. There's no way of proving this either way (outside of those particular users speaking up and calling us out for suspecting them), and if you're truly convinced certain users are questionable, you have access to the file and can edit them out on your own if you so choose. As the person who started this whole 'legitimacy' thing from the beginning, I think now is a good time to stop discussing it. The question has been raised, but there is no way to come to the truth through discussion; so, we might as well stop talking about it.

(And for those who think I'm paranoid, we totally did get a spammer trying to vote in Overlooked songs, so these things do happen)

I think this is an error. Should be the same artist. Error prolly in the official results too.

Edit: Funny thing is this happened the last time too :D

If that's the case, this artist should be #247 in the main results.

I'm assuming this is an error on the part of neither me or JimmyJazz realizing it was the same artist...

That's fine by me. No matter what, I'm pretty sure we've already spoiled the fun for the newcomers, so no need to turn the knife in the wound any longer.

The same here. I think Steely Dan is an "american thing" and Eno a "world thing".
So then Sweden is America's 51st state.
Sorry, I don't understand :)

BleuPanda wrote:The BleuPanda list, or, what this would have looked like if I ran it (using a modified formula of the one I used last year):

I wanted to accentuate BleuPanda's version.

Here you see the top 8 remained the same.

Coming up next were some of the most significant differences from JimmyJazz's list. It really shows what a difference the formula makes, in this case JimmyJazz --> BleuPanda, giving artists a boost if they appear low on many lists. Notice in particular the rise of Nat King Cole.

Nevermind, 253. I must have missed them.

Thanks for hosting this, JimmyJazz! I really appreciate all of your hard work on this.

Thank you too, BleuPanda! I'm particularly fond of the non-Beatles list, as can be expected given my vote counts for 1/6 of the total.

Their lists reasonably seem like what I would get from asking someone on the street (on the off chance they made one in the first place), they only seem out of place because of the fact that they're on a music forum. Yeah I agree tbh.

Pierre wrote:Just to be clear, when I talked about the fishy votes, I wasn't talking about the acts for whom they voted, but the fact that, according to JimmyJazz and BleuPanda, some votes were extremely similar with just little variations between the rankings of the artists, which implies some organized action. Otherwise, the fact that they voted for mainstream acts with little interest in more obscure artists is their choice, and a legitimate one, again, as long as it's not an organized action against the poll.

If there's no way of proving the truth that this poll was sabotaged then there's nothing we can do. However, assuming without admitting that the poll was sabotaged, this might have been avoided if we posted our lists directly to the thread instead of sending it through email. The troller/s might had probably thought twice of posting their list knowing if they do so it would invite suspicion of some regulars here.

But seriously, thank you so much to all that have put in so much into this poll, from hosting (JimmyJazz, an especially grateful grapefruit I am) to analyzing and speculation.

I never would've thought that I'd be the only one to vote for the Pretty Things. I recommend their albums S.F. Sorrow & Parachute based on this poll's results. Todd Rundgren having 4 votes doesn't make sense.

I honestly don't get how expressing most love for Michael Jackson, Queen, Beatles and Bee Gees could be considered trolling. Maybe a few of these 8 people are friends with similar taste, but so what? It's not forbidden.

I haven't checked the spreadsheet, but my impression from what I've read is that none of these 8 lists are very similar to each other. If they had been, then I agree that would have been suspicious.

If we could stop referring to new members as "lurkers" that would be great.

Serious question here. Why? As far as I know, a lurker is someone who frequents a forum without posting, which would describe the new users. There's no negative connotation at all.

And to add to that, I'm not referring to new users when I use it; there are a handful of new users who actually have posted on the forum. Likewise, as I mentioned, there are a couple people who have been here for at least a year who I do qualify as a lurker, since they only rarely post.

I haven't checked the spreadsheet, but my impression from what I've read is that none of these 8 lists are very similar to each other. If they had been, then I agree that would have been suspicious.
It's not Michael Jackson, Queen, Beatles and Bee Gees (or even R.E.M.) that gets to me (in fact I welcome it) but Linkin Park (3rd highest new entry) Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Mariah Carey, etc. getting to the top 500 and in exchange Fats Domino, The Drifters, N.W.A., B.B. King, Donovan, John Lee Hooker, The Islay Brothers are out.
I'm just disappointed and looking for some sad excuse.

Why Mariah Carey sounds so absurd? I mean, I agree about Fats Domino, The Drifters, B.B. King, The Isleys Brothers and N.W.A., but Carey is a amazing singer and has many good singles.

Here are all 35 of my solo missions - basically electropop, synthpop, 80s funk, and italo disco with a few exceptions.

Annie: 11
Annie Lennox: 15
Grace Jones: 20
Bootsy's Rubber Band: 23
The Human League: 24
Chromeo: 27
George Winston: 28
Kim Wilde: 29
Gary Numan/Tubeway Army: 44
The Gap Band: 45
Mylène Farmer: 47
iamamiwhoami: 53
André Cymone: 54
The Time: 58
Girls Aloud: 59
Joan Jett: 60
Mtume: 65
Zapp: 68
Kano: 69
Yazoo: 70
Deboray Harry: 72
Bootsy Collins: 73
Erasure: 75
Tantra: 76
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark : 83
Mötley Crüe: 84
Bagarre: 85
Busta Rhymes: 86
Salt-N-Pepa: 90
George Clinton: 91
Evelyn "Champagne" King: 92
Heaven 17: 94
Tom Tom Club: 98
Giorgio Moroder: 99
Rick James: 100

I've actually got more of these than I landed artists in the top 100 (25). That's actually a fun statistic to look at:

X artists in the top 100
X artists outside of the top Y

I landed 25 artists inside the top 100.
I landed 25 artists outside the top 985.

Thanks to JimmyJazz for hosting, and to BleuPanda for the late-game assist.
Moonbeam wrote:I'm particularly fond of the non-Beatles list, as can be expected given my vote counts for 1/6 of the total.
Yes, let us all recognize the non-Beatles list as the one true list, the other lists being swayed by liars, heathens, and heretics; and let us all praise our new musical messiah Bjork. Long may she offer us salvation. :D

In all seriousness, I see that I did not vote for Bjork either. However, she just missed out on my top 100, unlike the Beatles to whom I've always been indifferent. I'm actually a bit perplexed that the Rolling Stones are ranked #5 on the non-Beatles list as well. One day, someone needs to give me a long talk about why people love them so much. Don't get me wrong; I actually prefer the Stones to the Beatles. It's just that I so rarely hear them discussed that I am surprised when they rank so highly in polls like this.

I wouldn't mind seeing versions of the list with only top 10 votes (Sight and Sound poll style with them ranked by mentions) and another with only #1 votes counted. I might do this myself over the weekend if no one beats me to it (emphasis on "might" though :? ).

I didn't vote for the Stones either. The other 4 brethren must try to sway us into the Stones camp.

Thanks so much, JimmyJazz and BleuPanda for all your hard work and the great presentation (as well as everyone who's posted alternative versions of the list, which have been interesting, to say the least).

Also, JimmyJazz, I hope everything's going better for you personally. I look forward to your participation in the future once you have time again.

33 | Neil Young
34 | James Brown
35 | Kinks
36 | OutKast
37 | Cure

48 | U2
49 | Nick Cave
50 | Kendrick Lamar
51 | Public Enemy
52 | Van Morrison
53 | Joy Division

76 | Elton John
77 | Queen
78 | Boards of Canada
79 | Elliott Smith
80 | White Stripes

99 | Decemberists
100 | Blur

Included: JimmyJazz, BleuPanda, Dan, bootsy, Jeff, Gillingham, sonofsamiam, DaveC, Honorio, bonnielaurel, Bruno, Michel, jamieW, Nick, babydoll, Dexter, Brad, Jackson, acroamor, Merlo, VanillaFire, notbrianeno.

Sorry if I missed anyone. I figured two-of-three works better than just taking Miles Davis votes, since it's possible to like jazz and not list Davis in your top 100 (e.g., I had three R&B artists in my top 25, but did not vote for Marvin Gaye). Obviously, it's quite possible to love jazz and dislike all three of these guys or to love jazz and like one of the three, but I felt this was a good way to approximate a general interest in jazz.

The Beatles top even the 'Jazz-head' list. That got me thinking, can we cook up any possible combination of voters that doesn't have The Beatles at the top? (besides the voters who don't include Beatles)
