Just an FYI for those interested in the corrected and alternative lists, I'm currently assisting JimmyJazz in making his spreadsheet more user friendly - I'm essentially doing a complete overhaul, so it might be a couple days before it can be shared.

Actually, I might have just figured out how to do macros and found a really neat way to automate the process; now I just need to comb through and pick up things that were missed (there are a lot of problems caused by excel adding a blank space after some entrants). Excel is kind of magical when you figure out how to really use it.

Definitely expected Prince to at least maintain his position.

Also, is it bad that I'm impressed with myself for how quickly I put the new version of the file together? I should run the data for the next album poll.

If R.E.M. ranks above #8, they'll exceed the rosiest of expectations. While Prince didn't get a bump I still expect Bowie to be in the Top 5.

No Bleu, it is not bad and you should be proud; this forum will surely benefit from that.

Really, really, really surprised that Prince ended up so "low". I thought his recent death would've overcome the fall of R&B in this poll, but apparently not.

Bowie's looking to make some gains though. The difference here could be explained by the fact that Bowie released his best album in roughly 40 years two days before he died, while many fans felt Prince's best days were long behind him. Sad that it has to be this way, but this is the way it works.

Great to see people appreciate the genius of Stevie Wonder. Nice pic of R.E.M. and Michael Stipe (with hair) there, I almost thought he was George Michael in that "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" video, if only that pic was in color and his shirt was pink, lol.

While we're waiting for Jimmy to finish, is there any comparative lists people would want me to work on? I've already created 3:
1. A list according to the voters who did not vote for our #1 (just for the absurdity)
2. A list according to those who voted for Marvin Gaye
3. A list according to those who did not vote for Marvin Gaye

I decided to do a split with Marvin Gaye since it's about 55%/45% split, so I think it's a good reference point for who did and didn't vote for classic R&B acts, since that's been a central part of our discussion this time.

I'm also considering doing one with and without Kendrick Lamar voters, to see how those who voted for our most recent top 100 entrant differ; however, I'm not sure if that will better showcase those who voted for modern acts or those who voted for rap.

Happy for Stevie to stay in the top 10! I'm down to one artist left standing in my top 100.

R.E.M. did really well. Happy for fans of them. To be honest, their acclaim baffles me a bit. Even though there are other acclaimed artists who I dislike more, I generally can see where the acclaim comes from, even if I don't personally agree with it (e.g. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc.). But if I woke up tomorrow in a universe in which R.E.M. was, say, the 200th most acclaimed artist, it wouldn't really surprise me.

Woo hoo, I'm sure I'd be counted in list #1! That would be fun.

The Marvin Gaye split would be interesting as well. I didn't vote for him, though I like him well enough. My taste for RnB/soul/funk is pretty sparse before the mid-70s. Artists like Gaye, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, and Sly and the Family Stone are all somewhere in the 101-500 range for me. It was really with P-Funk and their subsequent interest that my full affection for RnB/soul/funk begins.

Our tastes seem pretty different overall, Moonbeam, but I agree with this. R.E.M. had a number of good songs over a long period of time, but none that I love enough to make me think of them as close to a top-10 artist.

I decided to go through and do that 'regulars vs. non-regulars' thing I mentioned. Only 8 voters don't fit my 'regular' criteria (posting 25 times, so some people who joined due to this poll already count), and I at least recognize two of them from our song poll last year. Of those remaining 6, I find 4 really interesting. They have practically no posts and they largely feature the same random artists. For example, Black Eyed Peas received 4 votes, and they all came from this set. The three votes for Nickelback? This set. Backstreet Boys, 3 Doors Down, Maroon 5. I find it highly odd that these 4 users appear to share a large portion of their bands; they have to know each other, right? It's especially odd since they all agree upon these bands that almost no one else here voted for, a lot the type of bands we as a collective questioned. Even worse is 2 of these users haven't posted a single time, and the other two have posted a total of three posts together.

I don't want to go into conspiracy mode, but this is clearly more than a coincidence; unfortunately, I don't know how to do correlations to showcase how unusual this is. Additionally, I don't know the cause; are these four actual people who know each other and happened to help each other come up with bands, hence the striking similarities? I certainly hope it isn't the other options, either a) someone wanting more representation than they would get as a single user or b) someone intentionally trolling us by submitting multiple lists with slight variations as to not raise immediate suspicions. This whole situation strikes me as odd.

I wouldn't question it too much, honestly. I think a forum like this (and music forums in general) can be pretty intimidating, particularly if you are a fan of artists which aren't very well-received there (such as the aforementioned Black Eyed Peas, Backstreet Boys, etc.). If you wanted to put on a sleuth hat, you could check for the registration dates, and I'm sure the IP addresses could be checked as well, but at what cost? My gut feeling is that these voters are too shy to comment much because of fear that their opinions will not be received very well.

Agree, they consistently place this high and I have no idea what separates them. I enjoy a lot of their songs but their sound doesn't strike me as special, particularly compared with the other artists in this echelon.

This should be definitely be looked into, I'm definitely curious on how high these 4 voters placed the artists you've mentioned.
If there's probable cause that we're being trolled then let us vote whether or not to invalidate their submissions. I don't know what information can be used to prove that (ip address? date joined?) they're colluding with each other or just one person creating multiple accounts. Of course, said persons should still be presumed to be innocent until this suspicion is proved to be true and I hope they soon speak up to clear their names. This or I'm just watching too much court TV. This is not to discriminate new members but weeding out those unjustly taking advantage of our open-arms approach in the polls which, if they succeed, will make a mockery our of the polls.

I don't think it is trolling. If they were, you'd think they would make more than 4 lists, more like 10 or 15. I'd say give them the benefit of the doubt, like Moonbeam said.

Woo hoo, I'm sure I'd be counted in list #1! That would be fun.
I happily and proudly join that club! :D
I think the voters in that list don't necessarily have a lot of correlation among each other. Although I do share some of your more eccentric omissions (not just The Beatles, also R.E.M, The Beach Boys and The Who among others), we still have very different tastes.

In this particular website, people's exposure to music is much more related to its position on the website than how popular it was when it first came out. I wasn't around in the 1970s. I saw Eno and I saw Steely Dan on lists in the early 2000s and I listened to them both with an equal amount of open mind. I enjoyed Eno more.

That's one of the great things about this site, that any entry on the list looks no different than any other entry on the list. You don't get influenced as much by the marketing dollars surrounding an artist.

I wasn't around either in the 70s, but I did know Eno before I came to AM, while I only know Steely Dan through AM.

Though it does come with other baggage - it assigns a certain value to new discoveries before you actually experience them. What it avoids in the influence in marketing, it can replace with a sense of 'canon' that should be questioned.

I think Eno is also comparable to The Velvet Underground as an artist that made their legacy after their work came out. Even if people didn't listen to Eno himself, he helped produce some of the finest albums by other bands. Certain artists grow in retrospect, and there's reason for people to have reconsidered him after his work with Talking Heads and U2.

The biggest fans section got cut out too. SORRY. The spreadsheet will be posted here anyways, you can very easily see them there, and it was driving me up a wall having to provide the users who put the next 6 acts in their Top 30 (nearly half of all of the voters!)

It would be nice to see the biggest fans at some point though, maybe just the people who put these artists at top 10.

Re: The AMF Top 100 Artists 2016!!!

Post by JimmyJazz »

Okay, everyone, that wraps up this four month long project. It became a train wreck as the presentation went on, and we had some weird results that frankly I am in agreement with Bleu over in terms of suspicion, but overall the results were very strong. Attached is the awesome spreadsheet that Bleu helped out with, for which we should all be grateful to him for (at the very least I am). As I said before, I will be taking a short break from this forum, as I have spent enough time here on this poll; there is no offense or anger to anyone, just need to take a rest, sometimes happens for me with certain websites.

Obviously, we can now play around with the spreadsheets and create alternate variations on the list, a pleasant distraction from the latest newly sparked Steely Dan centered feud (one of my favorite perennial topics on this forum). I like all of the lists suggested, but some I also would be curious to see would be the "regulars" vs. "non-regulars", lists based only on Top 30s or even 10s, the list with votes only from users who voted in the 2013 artist poll as well, and maybe even the list factored in with longtime users and voters who didn't vote in this poll, such as nicolas, Stephan, Zorg, etc. by using their old lists from 2013 (admittedly not accounting for changed tastes on their part, but a hypothetical what-if).

Sorry I missed this year's project (again) jimmyjjazz. Maybe I should start working on the one for 2017 within the next few months. :) Thanks for your work.
