The Best Albums And Songs of 1996

Post by nicolas »

Episode 7 : 1996

Please submit at least your favorite 5 songs and/or albums of the year 1996. Lists must be ranked. Only the top 15 songs/albums will be given points.

The deadline is midnight (Pacific Time) on the 31st of August. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

15 albums/songs per year will advance, including at least 1 non anglophone album/song(the Nicolas/Henrik act). To be eligible to the second round, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please submit your list starting with #1 (no reverse order please) according to the following example

Artist - Album/Song

you can use 1), 1. or whatever separation character you like but what matters is not to reverse the song order and respect the artist - song order.

EPs and compilations are not allowed. The generally admitted reference for dates is Rate Your Music, unless proven otherwise.

Initial exploits seem very positive to me. I've already heard The Wrens' Secaucus and the two Belle & Sebastian albums, but Stereolab, Jay-Z, the first Modest Mouse album (one of my favourite bands ever), Beck, Pinkerton, DJ Shadow, Spoon and (especially) the first Sleater-Kinney album are all must-listens for me. And then add stuff like Dr. Octagon and Ween and that's a list!

You forgot Bob Hund ;)
You should really check out Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "Now I Got Worry". Dirrrrty blues. Please don't turn it off during the first 20 seconds... (continue at least to "Wail").
Four albums that I will check out that you might be interested in as well are
John Zorn - Bar Kokhba
The Bulgarian Voices Angelite & Huun-Huur-Tu - Fly, Fly My Sadness
Cheik Lô - Né la thiass
Oumou Sangare - Worotan

I hope more people will consider Tortoise for their lists. Both album and song are a clear-cut number one for the year for me. I still vividly remember how blown away I was the first time I heard "Djed"--it's rare that a piece of music can be so captivating and unlike anything else you've ever heard, particularly the section that starts about 10 minutes in.

I hope anyone that likes early Modest Mouse more than later Modest Mouse (i.e. everyone) listens to their debut This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About. It's got that Mousey sound that for some reason I find enchanting, with that weird ability of making the most average-length songs sound like epics. A really really good listen.

I also enjoyed Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats, a mixture between a comedy album in the vein of Zappa (Piss Up A Rope) and genuinely talented country music Powder Blue.

#6 on my list. If you've heard other Ween and didn't like it (like me) give this one a shot.

(TNT on another hand is quite interesting... not wholy enjoyable, but interesting). And if you love Tortoise and were not here for the 2nd Moderately Acclaimed Poll, you should give a try at Labradford self-titled album.

#6 on my list. If you've heard other Ween and didn't like it (like me) give this one a shot.
I have begun to love it. They're so silly it's difficult to hate. I don't know if it will hit top 5 though. I've heard so many great albums so far. It also doesn't compete with Chocolate and Cheese, an album that I only heard a month or two ago and are now 2nd on my last.fm most-listened-to list :music-listening:

I don't know if I will find 15 albums to rank. I'll give Millions Now Living... another spin though, I did not like it as far as I remember but a 2nd try might be worth it. (TNT on another hand is quite interesting... not wholy enjoyable, but interesting). And if you love Tortoise and were not here for the 2nd Moderately Acclaimed Poll, you should give a try at Labradford self-titled album.
Re-listen to Millions Now Living and I'll listen to Labradford. :D If you like Tortoise I can't imagine why you wouldn't enjoy it, and it is one that gets better on repeated listens. I've heard four or five of their albums but it's clear they never made a statement like "Djed." The rest of the tracks flow so well too--I couldn't think of a better way to close the album than "Along the Banks of Rivers."

Sonofsam, I'm glad to see somebody else really likes the song "Volcano." I feel even among Soundtracks for the Blind fans that it gets overlooked in favor of "The Sound" (which, to be fair, is a massive track itself). But I've never heard another song quite like "Volcano," which pairs ethereal pop vocals with a shapeshifting techno beat. Also, I really like that Divine Comedy song--now I need to listen to that album.

Yeah, "Volcano" is actually my favorite Swans track -- I wish sometimes they would have gone down that road more often.

Glad you liked Divine Comedy too -- if you're into either Scott Walker or Burt Bacharach, Neil Hannon's your guy. The run of Promenade/Casanova/A Short Album About Love is pretty glorious. He can get a little arch and precious, but when he gets it right it's greatness.

Yes, listen to the Divine Comedy album Jackson ! IMO it's a little overstuffed with arrangements (I prefer his first 2) but the songs are great (great melodies and lyrics) so that makes it an all time top 100 album.
The Divine Comedy was a great live act too. I've seen them numerous times and I especially remember the Casanova tour.
Well, I cannot promise that I'll listen to the Tortoise album in return, but I'll try :D

BTW if perchance any of you liked Buena Vista Social Club you should give a spin to Compay Segundo's first album Yo Vengo Aqui. It's the same music with a different, more sparse, acoustic sound. It's just fantastic. I guess Dan already heard it and that it will be on top of his list too.

Yep, it will most definitely by my #1 album too. It was only when I listened to it for a 3rd time that it really clicked with me. I've been a big fan of Buena Vista Social Club for many years, and the first time I heard Yo Vengo Aqui I didn't like it quite as much - I thought the sound was a little too sparse and that the music needed more variety.

But now, 2 spins later, the laidback sway of those Cuban rhythms and Segundo's seasoned vocals are my favourite things from 1996. The title track is arguably the best thing on it.

Compay is not the lead singer, but he plays the 7-string gtr and does the bass vocals (harmonizing)
i have a great personal story with this album. I discovered it when I was in Burkina Faso at a friend's house. He used to play it every morning to wake up the house. I knew it before BUena vista so it was my first real encounter with Cuban son. And since i love acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies...

That sounds like a very pleasant way to wake up in the morning. Maybe I should try to make Yo vengo aqui my alarm bell. But I'm not sure it will have the same effect in rainy Scotland than in Burkina Faso! (Well, I guess that depends on the time of the year you were there.)

Beautiful music.

I keep posting on this, but it's because I make all these new discoveries and I hope people vote for them!

If you're a fan of Elliott Smith, then his former band before he went solo is definitely worth a listen. Mic City Sons by Heatmiser on first listen seems to be really decent, and very Smithy indeed. I'm not the biggest fan of Smith's solo material, but this has more of a bounce to it, it's not so morose. See You Later and Half Right in particular are wonderful songs.

I've found this Spotify playlist via AllMusic. The songs seem to be the same versions as on the album, except for track 6, "Mi Calderito".

Mic City Sons is the only Heatmiser album I haven't listened to. The other ones are hit and miss, but I'm guessing the one before Elliott went solo would be the best.

Oh zut ! Nobody put this one on the 95's thread ? It's not possible to put this on 96 if nobody had mentioned in 95 ;-)
I'll get another one if it's not good.

15. R.E.M.- Electrolite

Some albums are growers, but some others are shrinkers. "New Adventures in Hi Fi" is a shrinker to me.
What a great idea for a thread !!
