"STAR WARS FUR YEAH I'M ROCKIN CHEWBACCA!!1"

Really loved Pablo. The lack of focus or theme is yet another left turn from Ye, and the album makes up for it's seemingly random tracklist with its spontaneity, and enjoyability when re-sequenced by the listener. Production is stellar, like College Dropout travelled into the future and discovered trap. I've accepted that Ye will never be as good of a rapper as he was during the original GOOD Friday sequence back in 2010, but for the most part he does a good job on this record, with a few incredible lyrical highs ("No More Parties in LA"comes to mind). At this point, probably my 3rd or 4th favorite Kanye album.

I am in agreement that NMPILA is a bit of a tough listen, but that may have less to do with its placement and more to do with its length, and the fact that the sample is kind of annoying.

TimmyWing wrote:Overall, I do like it - I don't know how much use it is to compare it to classic albums like Songs in the Key of Life or The Beatles* - but there are some amazing tracks here, enough that I can just ignore the ones I don't like. I don't know how often I'm going to listen to the album as a whole, but...well, I'm just glad it's not a disaster.

It still baffles me how much acclaim Yeezus got. The whole let's-be-edgy-like-Death-Grips thing didn't work for me primarily because he wasn't willing (able?) to be as abrasive as MC Ride and co. I've listened to it so many times and it just leaves me cold. Oddly enough, the one song I really loved on it ("Guilt Trip") got nowhere near as much attention as any of the others, but I felt that was the one song that didn't have anything lyrically or sonically cringeworthy on it. So that's a batting average of 1/10 I guess? Pablo already fares much better.
I honestly see TLOP as Yeezus' weaker sequel. I thought overall the lyrics and production as far less interesting than Yeezus. With Yeezus, there was some kind of cohesiveness, which is sorely lacking in TLOP. This is probably just a case of "To each his own."

I really like the album, but I feel like the major weakness to it is its total lack of cohesion. "White Album" this is not. Anyway, I've come up with a tracklist that I think works a lot better for TLOP.

1. Ultralight Beam
2. Low Lights
3. Famous
4. Feedback
5. Waves
6. No More Parties in L.A.
7. FML
8. Real Friends
9. 30 Hours
10. Wolves
11. Fade

...take away some of the worst lyrics on the album (like the "bleached asshole" line and most of Kanye's verse from "Wolves", throw in the genuinely funny "I Love Kanye" skit somewhere that fits and you've got an album at around the level of "Graduation". As for now, well, it's really good, but it could be GREAT).

In the event anyone was interested, a CD-quality version of "Wolves" featuring both Vic Mensa and Sia has been leaked online.

I haven't listened to the album, but I did listen to the Fantano review. Funny enough, he also brings up the White Album (direct quote was something like "this isn't Kanye's White Album), so I guess the opinion is getting around.

I must ask this because I am very unfamiliar with Vic Mensa. Having listened to this, it seems only Kanye, Sia & Vic are on the song. Is Frank gone? Or did I just really mishear things?

All of them are on the song - Frank Ocean does the verse at the very beginning. On the album version, it's at the end of the track.

I heard "The Life of Pablo" three times. At some times seems an incomplete job, but with great moments, especially in the production of some tracks.

My ranking:

“Famous”
“No More Parties in L.A.”
“Ultra Light Beams”
“Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1”/“Father Stretch My Hands, Pt 2”
“30 Hours”
“FML”
"Waves"
“Real Friends”
“Fade”
“Feedback”
“Facts”
“Freestyle 4”
“High Lights”
“Wolves”

-------
“I Miss the Old Kanye”
“Silver Surfer Transmission”
“Low Lights”

Couple of minor alterations - the album cover on Tidal has reverted to the "original" artwork (which is at least easier on the eye than that other version - and I was just getting used to looking at this one when he Tweeted the other one), and the Silver Surfer Intermission now has more vowels in the title.

Am I tripping or did he shorten this intermission too?

Does anyone have thoughts as to which tracks the critics will gravitate toward at the end of the year? I don't think any one song will garner great levels of acclaim but I see a few songs getting decent acclaim. "Real Friends", "NMPILA", "Ultralight Beam", and "Waves" seem like the safest bets, in my opinion. I'd like to think "Wolves" would get a lot of love but the opinion on the current album version seems pretty mixed.

NMPILA is my pick to be the most acclaimed song, though I agree that it suffers from the split acclaim.

As for the album I'm pretty sure it will make the top 10 cos it's Kanye, but I'd be surprised if it makes top 3. Only if it grows on people over time, which we have to wait and see.

I can see the opposite happening, the whole release has been botched and exhausting. For example, the new leaks, is the end even in sight? It seems the album could go through several major changes by March, people have to get sick of all of this at some point, right?

Personally, the way this album seems to mutate or evolve with each passing incarnation is one of the things I feel make it so interesting and innovative. After a string of concept albums, Kanye is challenging our very ideas of what constitutes an album, and puts forward this release as something constantly in flux and gaining new meanings, rather than a static art form.

The most primeval way to turn it into a ringtone: Play the video, record it as it's playing, then make it into your ringtone. That is, if your phone can do that. I suggest if it can, do it! That's a damn amazing idea.

I'm sure there are various platforms that can turn a youtube video into a ringtone around. But which part would you use? My vote would go to "Stanley Kubrick. Ye."

Given the shakey production schedule for TLOP, this probably means nothing significant, assumptions that TLOP was be his last album notwithstanding.

Well, his album turned out to be titled The Life of Pablo... He probably honestly hates Bob Ezrin's guts... He passionately despises Taylor Swift... This isn't the first Bashfest endorsed by Kanye West with prizes for agreeing with him.

That last sentence was a bit sarcastic with a hint of truth.

I tried playing around with different sequences of these tracks (such as the 3-act tracklist Ye had written out a while back) and nothing was really doing it for me or seeming to improve it. Until - well, of course his tracks are the most popular on Tidal right now, but - the order they fall in the Tidal Top 20 actually...makes it sound like an album?!? Obviously it couldn't have been planned, but the transitions are far less jarring than they are in their original order.

Here it is for preservation/if you don't have Tidal:

1. Famous
2. Father Stretch My Hands, Part 1
3. FML
4. Father Stretch My Hands, Part 2
5. Ultralight Beam
6. Waves
7. Real Friends
8. Feedback
9. Wolves
10. Highlights
11. Freestyle 4
12. Low Lights
13. 30 Hours
14. Fade
15. Facts (Charlie Heat Version)
16. I Love Kanye
17. No More Parties in L.A.
18. Siiiiiiiiiiiiilver Surferrrrrrrrr Interrrrrmisssionnnnn

Probably not a major revelation, but it works for me and I just wanted to share it in case people wanted to experiment.

I'm wondering if it's going to be a Death Grips kinda feature, or if Björk has done fresh vocals. It seems she is currently working on new material, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the later. It's interesting because she had this to say of Ye last year:
“I have nothing against Kanye West,” she said. “[But] with the last album he did, he got all the best beatmakers on the planet at the time to make beats for him. A lot of the time, he wasn’t even there. Yet no one would question his authorship for a second.”

If this is real then I agree Drake might seem out of place sandwiched between two legends. But for some people, like myself, Drake is building an impressive legacy of his own so if he manages to shine this could be a key turning point in his career.

Surprised no one's updated this thread yet, unless everyone's simply lost interest - as you might have expected, Kanye has changed his mind about only ever making TLOP available via Tidal, and as of this morning the album is now available on all the other major streaming services (as well as - finally - being made available for a $20 download on West's website).

Kanye's been tweaking a track here and a track there on the Tidal version for the last couple of weeks (most notably, Vic Mensa and Sia have been restored to "Wolves," and Frank Ocean's recorded contribution to that song is now included as its outro and has its own track listing). Now, it's been announced that changes have been made to a significant number of tracks. Does this mean that TLOP is finally "finished"? Umm, no - a press release indicated that West still considers the record a work in progress. Whatever. At least it's finally available outside Tidal.

I'm sorry but I hate this album. I really do.

It's not the White Album, because at least there I could hear a flow. All these tracks sounded like Kanye freestyling while drunk!

This seems like a parody of Kanye West. I think this is what his haters think his music sounds like. And the clunky production made me cringe.

Yeah, this was bad. I have no desire to listen to it again.

But, do you hate it as much as Kanye loves Kanye?

It's wildly uneven, to be sure (I have no idea what possessed him to include that "this-is-so-tossed-off-that-I-think-I'll-actually-answer-this-phone-call-while-I'm-recording" coda on "30 Hours"), but this assessment is way too harsh - the best moments here are as good as anything Kanye's done, particularly "Ultralight Beam," "Famous" (shock-value TSwift line aside, the track kicks ass, especially that brilliant sample, which is almost - almost - a match for that Euro-prog sample at the end of "New Slaves"), and the entire stretch from "Waves" through "Wolves." Repeat listens are very kind to TLOP.
