Not Fans: Brad(140), JamieW(150), LiveinPhoenix(86/91)

LiveinPhoenix: I don't have tremendous interest in hearing them just play the blues. I figure this album struck people differently in 1964, but…I'm looking for decadence and not hearing it yet. Give 'em a month or two.

Not Fans: Harold(115/126), JamieW(145), KingofTonga(114/115)

DaveC: A disappointing trend starts here: Where I am the strongest supporter of Buffy, Patsy, Joan, and Etta albums. I would rather not have this distinction. On the other hand, I'm the lowest ranker of several jazz classics, not something to be proud of.

[120] The Beatles | Beatles for Sale | 668.9 pts
AM rank : 948
AM 1960s rank : 137
AMF 2014 All-time poll 1960s rank : 126

Not Fans: antonius(102/112), BleuPanda(96/106), Listyguy(123/132)

LiveinPhoenix: A fairly good album, but the one time I've felt that a Beatles release was undercooked and below their high standards. The cover songs this time are a tad boring. Generally a step back after the huge leap forward of A Hard Day's Night, although the first few songs mark a new serious side. Amazing album cover depicting humorless exhaustion -- I can't believe Capitol went with it!

LiveinPhoenix: Crazy murderer Phil Spector assembles one of the great Christmas albums, full of joyous, impassioned performances. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is the highlight, but a lot of these have made the holiday radio (either that, or they haven't left my head). I try out additional holiday albums over the years, but it's always back to this one.

LiveinPhoenix: Part one of the "I'm waiting for them to make Tommy" trilogy. Said to be dismissed by the band as something of a rush job, and I agree. "My Generation," "The Kids Are Alright," and "A Legal Matter" are of course great songs, and I felt Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy covered the early period well.

LiveinPhoenix: I pretty much started in order with the Beatles albums, so when I put on Please Please Me, it was almost like I was a teenager in 1963, embarking on a great musical quest. That excitement has made me forgiving of the album's weaknesses. (I guess there are a couple sappy numbers, aren't there?) Pretty freakin' good considering their '60s contemporaries and rivals aren't really in play yet.

Fans: Listyguy(4)
Not Fans: bonnielaurel(115/116), luney6(75/75)

Listyguy: The least respected of Jimi's big three, often forgotten because it was thrown in between two masterpeices. Has a dreaminess to the psychadelia.

[79] The Byrds | Mr. Tambourine Man | 756 pts

AM 1960s rank : 56

Highest rank: Miguel(16)
Not Fans: sonofsamiam(135/143)

LiveinPhoenix: My favorite of the first four albums. Gene Clark is probably not even the second or third Byrd you'd think of right away, but he is the dominant non-Dylan songwriter here, and there's not a completed album here without him.

[78] Donovan | Sunshine Superman | 756.6 pts

AM 1960s rank : 201
AMF 2014 All-time poll 1960s rank : 121

Position in 1966 poll : 13

Fans: Honorio(15)
Lowest rank: sonofsamiam(125/143)

Honorio: Flower-power. Few artists captured the essence of the times like Donovan Leitch. His ethereal and radiant renderings were the perfect backing for the hippie idealistic 60s. We can find sunny-pop gems ("Sunshine Superman"), Indian mantras ("Ferris Wheels"), medieval tales ("Guinevere") but also apocalyptic rock songs ("Season of the Witch").

Highest rank: Jeff(16)
Not Fans: DaveC(149), Henry(140), Honorio(146)

LiveinPhoenix: It's hard to know how to rate freak-out jazz, but this is always fun to listen to. I wonder if anyone in the Ken Burns jazz documentary has gotten over this album yet.

[73] John Fahey | Vol. II: Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes | 765.9 pts

Fans: DaveC(1)
Not Fans: bonnielaurel(107/116), Gillingham(58/60), Jeff(133/144), LiveinPhoenix(91/91)

DaveC: Well I guess I have the lowest ranked #1 vote again. The best psychedelic album of all time. Creative experimentation combined with twisted nursery rhymes. Never gets boring because nobody else has had the nerve or imagination to make anything like it.

Image
[71] The Moody Blues | Days of Future Passed | 768.3 pts
AM rank : 1001
AM 1960s rank : 143
AMF 2014 All-time poll 1960s rank : 87

Position in 1967 poll : 13

Highest rank: JamieW(20)
Not Fans: Harold(119/126), Jeff(144/144), Listyguy(126/132)

LiveinPhoenix: I'd argue it's matched or even bettered by To Our Children's Children's Children, Seventh Sojourn, and The Other Side of Life (from the '60s, '70s, and '80s). Still, a very good showcase of everyone's gifts, minus the recited poetry, and the beginning of what Justin Hayward has had to offer. "Nights in White Satin" simultaneously seems overwrought and the ultimate Moody Blues song (and the ultimate song I guess if you've wanted the universe to blow up at the end).

So our affection for Nina Simone continues unabated. We've also been generally ranking Jacques Brel at higher levels than previously.

Also quite a few jazz albums have received increased support. I count 9 to come and I believe that each one is ranked higher than in previous polls.

Oh man, Axis is damn low too. I hope this isn't a foreshadowing of the placement of Jimi's other albums.

Honorio: I've chosen a live album from one of the best live performers ever. He was not only the main figure of Chanson, writer of immortal songs (like "Amsterdam") but he was a total artist. He lived his lyrics, he acted his stories. The movements of his hands and his mouth and the expressions on his face were as important as the singing or song-writing.

DaveC: 2nd highest entry not ranked on AM. Again very deserving.

It's painful for most folks to listen to most of the songs on the album, so the low rankings are no surprise.

Honorio: Living in a political world. An angry young Dylan (with a sullen look in the album cover) took no prisoners here, he charged against war lords, judges, government or racism. Not forgetting sublime lost-love songs ("Boots of Spanish Leather") or defiant attitude (the title song). The peak of the political Bob before showing us his "Another Side."

Honorio: Although the mythical stature of the Stones relies in bringing Blues music back to life and exemplifying the Rock 'n' Roll way of life, they were also an excellent POP band, as good as any other British band (and I’m talking about The Kinks or The Beatles). Don’t believe me? Just listen to "Under My Thumb," "Out of Time" or "Mother's Little Helper."

Interesting to see Lady Soul ranked higher than I Never Loved a Man. Definitely unexpected, even if it's only by a few places.

Honorio: The more ambitious S&G album is also their best. The acclaim usually goes to the vinyl A-side, a conceptual set of songs about the passing of time from childhood ("Save the Life of My Child") to elderly ("Old Friends"), with a peak on "America." But I prefer the B-side, a collection of singles as brilliant as "Mrs. Robinson" or "Hazy Shade of Winter."

Yes, every Jazz album had better positions than in previous polls (except "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" and "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" that ended slightly worse).

LiveinPhoenix: Compared to the masterpieces ahead, this seems thrown together. "Yesterday" just shows up out of nowhere. But it's good fun, and you get "Ticket to Ride," "Help!", "The Night Before," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"…

Honorio: Exactly, "Otis Blue" and "Otis Redding Sings Soul." A self-explanatory title if there's one. We can find here some of the bluest ballads ever ("I've Been Loving You Too Long" or "A Change Is Gonna Come") and some of the hardest soul numbers ("Respect," "Satisfaction" or "Shake"). And Otis sang every word and every verse putting all his soul on it.

LiveinPhoenix: This has possibly my favorite Beatles opening stretch…the whole first side! If for some reason, the Beatles never musically experimented, never met Dylan, never tried funny substances, just made more albums like this, I'd still call it a great deal.

Image
[26] Neil Young with Crazy Horse | Everybody knows this is Nowhere | 992.9 pts

AM 1960s rank : 52
AMF 2014 All-time poll 1960s rank : 22

Fans: KingofTonga(2), LiveinPhoenix(8)
Lowest rank: Jeff(103/144)

LiveinPhoenix: Buffalo Springfield's Neil Young sheds his old prefix as soon as "Cinnamon Girl" kicks off with Crazy Horse, the group he hangs out with when it's time to do some dirty work. Neil bludgeons a song better than usual here, and the slow songs are great, too. A great album every which way, and even with his legendary '70s run, it's another 6 years before Neil releases an album I like anywhere near as much.

Honorio: The highest achievement on Hendrix short career. While discovering the studio trickery and expanding his limits he made the perfect Acid Rock album. His usual mastery on electric guitar (showcased on the four-part solo on "All Along the Watchtower") met here with a solid improvement in song-writing and a bold, experimental attitude.

LiveinPhoenix: One of those albums that just dies between the Best-of tracks and the non-Best-of tracks. Fortunately, there's a lot of Best-of tracks. Jim Morrison was of course one of rock's great performers who gave fully as a frontman vocally, carnally, spiritually, pretentiously.

DaveC: My second favourite Beatles album - maybe underrated because it is regarded as a cobbled together compilation. One consequence of that is that there are no weak tracks.

LiveinPhoenix: God, anyone today who came up with their "Sgt. Pepper" album would give themselves the rest of the year off! Weaker than the preceding album, but still a lot for the listener to go through. Not really an "All You Need Is Love" fan, but Paul has some pleasant if occasionally innocuous numbers, and I love the disorienting effect of "Blue Jay Way" and "Strawberry Fields."

Honorio: Leonard Cohen was probably the first worldwide bedroom star. I can imagine various generations of sensitive boys and girls listening him religiously in his/her bedrooms at night. The minimalist but inspired arrangements (that snare drum on "So Long Marianne"!), the European flavours and the poetic lyrics were outstanding features of his debut.

DaveC: Everytime I put this album on a list it is ranked higher than before. I guess it is possible to play this enough to be bored by it, but that limit seems a long way away yet.

LiveinPhoenix: Years ago, I was not remotely looking forward to this album. I knew "Time of the Season," which had some horribly dated music video, and I wrote off these guys as moldy old hippies. Rolling Stone put this in their Top 100, as if simply to tick me off, but I felt duty-bound to give this some chance. What I got in return, of course, was some surprisingly elegant music that's outlived its era (and, to boot, re-contextualized "Time of the Season" for me). This is my Exhibit A when it comes to trying an album despite strong reservations...you just never know.

Listyguy: What an album! What a debut! What a guitarist!

LiveinPhoenix: I've heard plenty of guitar hero rock that's come out since 1967; but it doesn't really ever sound this good all in one place. One of those rock debuts you're always wanting, where everything is in place and you're handed a virtual greatest hits album. My most spoiled criticism ever is that I wish Jimi's vocals were on par with his guitar.

Man, half of the top 10 is Beatles albums. I like the band as much as the next guy (I had a few of their albums in my top 10), but this is ridiculous. You can't tell me the Beatles made five better albums than any Hendrix album, or five that are better than Let It Bleed or Beggars Banquet.

LiveinPhoenix: 5 albums into the Beatles' reign of the known universe, Rubber Soul announces, "We're not messing around anymore." That was the f!#$ing warm-up? Subject matter and instrumentation are deeper than ever before, and the album benefits from being recorded all in one period of time, compared with Help! (all of four months earlier). I have a few Beatles albums rated ahead of this, including one chronologically earlier, but it's definitely a turning point. "In My Life" wouldn't have quite been possible before, and is my favorite Beatles tune.

Their best set of songs, I don't know, yet the whole thing flows incredibly well. (I usually forget even famous albums' track listings.) Generally brought together by a sense of wonder, there's a kind of euphoria listening to this album.

Honorio: An album misunderstood and ignored when it was released. At the exact time (1967) and place (California) of hippie glory there was Arthur Lee, a man who didn't share that cosmic happiness. "Sitting on a hillside watching all the people die, I'll feel much better on the other side." No matter how great it was, nobody wanted to listen to this then.

DaveC: Double albums were the best way to deal with material that was too good to throw away, but not good enough to stand up to the scrutiny of being an essential part of a single album. Dylan changed the rules - brilliantly.

Honorio: Dylan not abandoned the automatic poetry but pointed toward more personal matters, with Sarah Lowndes, Edie Sedgwick and Joan Baez as (unwanted) subjects. The lyrics were cryptic and the music was messy but this was not only part of the charm but maybe its main appeal. He found a unique sound equidistant from pop-rock and roots-music. In Dylan's own words: "The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the "Blonde on Blonde" album. It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold. That's my particular sound."

LiveinPhoenix: It doesn't have a "Like a Rolling Stone" cultural signpost, but it doesn't really matter. Dylan has classic songs shooting out his fingertips at this point. Just a ridiculous album, not just in terms of funny imagery, but how little time Dylan needed once he got to Nashville. Obviously there were more brilliant moments in the ensuing decades, but I feel like the Dylan who made this got on his motorcycle and never came back.

Honorio: Brian Wilson left aside the glorification of Californian life, the beaches, surfers, cars and girls that characterized the thematic of Beach Boys till then. In Brian Wilson's words: "I was not trying to entertain people, I was expressing my feelings straight from the heart." It was the time to talk about inner feelings, dreams ("Wouldn't it Be Nice"), maladjustment ("I Just Wasn't Made for These Times"), spiritual love ("God Only Knows") or losing of innocence ("Caroline No": "Where did your long hair go / Where is the girl I used to know / How could you lose that happy glow?").

LiveinPhoenix: Not necessarily the ideal Beach Boys album (not very much fun fun fun), yet Today! and Summer Days aren't in my Top 500, let alone my Top 100. And "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is my top Beach Boys song ever. A great artistic statement from an unlikely source, back when albums were still rush jobs.

Wow - nice list of albums but some horrendous omissions that are better than at least half of the albums that did make the top 144

Buffalo Springfield Again
Moby Grape
Safe As Milk - Captain Beefheart
The Stooges
Traffic (second self-titled)
Born Under A Bad Sign - Albert King
Gris Gris - Dr. John

As for the top 5 _i've got no issues with Highway 61, Pet Sounds, VU & Nico, Revolver however they place but The White Album in top five is just wrong - great songs, but a good third of that album is absolute dreck. One of the all-time most overrated records.

Honorio: The Beatles went so far with the "White Album" that in fact planted the seeds of the band disintegration. Many songs were recorded without involvement of any of the other band members ("Mother Nature Son," "Julia," "Why Don't We do It in the Road" or "Revolution 9"). But this individualism and dispersion miraculously not only was no dead weight but indeed it was a virtue, even its main virtue. They applied the perfect and precise arrangement to every song without caring for cohesiveness. If a song needed clarinets ("Honey Pie"), guitar overdrive ("Helter Skelter"), honky-tonk pianos ("Rocky Racoon") or a full orchestra ("Good Night") that was what the song got. All for the Song. And Song for all.

LiveinPhoenix: It starts off with "Back in the U.S.S.R.," my least favorite Beatles opener. Then it goes to "Dear Prudence," which slowly grew on me. Then "Glass Onion," which I've never liked. Then one of my favorites, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." And it kind goes on like this, in various configurations -- something that I don't care for, something that I've come to enjoy, something great, all thrown upon the listener. Amidst the generosity, and the thrilling mess, I still have my complaints. On the other hand, as Paul said, "It's the White Album, shut up."

I must say, despite my earlier comments about there being way too much Beatles at the top (which I stand by), I'm glad my #1 album (Abbey Road) is in the top 3. That said, I do agree with Illiniq that The White Album is vastly overrated as shouldn't be at #4 of the decade.

DaveC: My favourite Beatles album.

Honorio: Comparing the Beatles career with the periods on Classical music: Baroque (the first two albums), Classical (the next four), Romantic ("Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's"), Avant-Garde ("MMT"and "White Album") and Decadence (the last two). But with one major problem, there is nothing more antagonistic to decadence than this brilliant album.

Listyguy: Can we pretend Phil Spector and "Let It Be" (the album) enver happened? This would have been the perfect ending for the group.

LiveinPhoenix: An honorable end. I've resigned myself to the fact (in part thanks to the Beatles) that even the best musicians are probably going to burn white-hot for about 10 years. George Harrison's contributions are great, and even the Ringo number is on par. But it's a bit light on Lennon.

Mmm, dear Listyguy and Illiniq, why "shouldn't be" or "is just wrong"? This is a poll. The "White Album" simply obtained more points than another 146 albums. 5 of the 20 voters put the album on their #1 and #2 positions. You don't like it? That's perfectly fine, don't vote for it.

I was simply expressing my opinion on the album. The fact that it's higher than every Dylan album, Sgt. Pepper, all of Hendrix, Pet Sounds, etc. perturbs me. And yes, I don't think it should be where it is on this list. Clearly the voting body disagrees. So be it. I stand by my words.

Why be perturbed about it?

I am not joyous that so many others love VU and I find it rather meh in term of enjoyability. But, I find no reason to get upset about the views of others in matters so subjective. The White Album provides a great variety of musical expression from the greatest group of all time.

The willingness of the Beatles to put unpolished songs that included experimentation results in some songs (e.g., Revolution 9) that I almost always skip. But, there are far more songs that I enjoy on the White Album than there are on our poll's number 2 album.

Honorio: A series of fortunate collisions generated this masterpiece: between street-wise rock & roll of Lou Reed and classical background of John Cale, between those intuitive musicians and pop-art Pope Andy Warhol, between heroin and pushers urban stories and the decadent glamour of the Factory transvestites and starlets, between Rock and Art.

Honorio: The Fab Four expanded with "Revolver" their musical palette and expanded their (our) minds with that. And their daring but successful forays into Hindu music ("Love You To"), avant-garde ("Tomorrow Never Knows") or Classical music ("Eleanor Rigby") were incorporated to their own style (the horn solo in "For No One" is now a Beatles-style solo).

LiveinPhoenix: Another great Beatles opening stretch, all the way through "Yellow Submarine." Between this and Sgt. Pepper's, though, Revolver has never seemed as cohesive. A lot of styles covered, but the presence of more common fare, and a scattering of song topics, makes the album seem more like an excellent test of what the group's powers are. (These aren't very much criticisms, more like stuff I apparently think of when comparing the best of the best.)

Thanks so much, DaveC! Tremendous presentation from beginning to end (both songs and albums). Really appreciate all the work you put into them. (And I'm glad I didn't press my luck and try to predict the top 20 albums after winning the songs contest. I had a feeling I would've been waaaaay off with the albums - and I would've been right! The fact I thought "Pet Sounds" would be #1 would've been just one of many major miscalculations...)
