What's your favo(u)rite music genre?

Post by Andre »

Hi,

this question might already have been asked here, but what's your favo(u)rite music genre?

My favo(u)rite genre is Jangle Pop, well at least that's what I thought.
Generally speaking my cells like hearing jangly guitars, and then the term jangle pop comes too short.
At least The Byrds' folk rock, Paisley Underground, C86 and Dunedin Sound should be included.

Does anyone of you know a website that gives a comprehensive overview of music genres?

allmusic, rateyourmusic and wikipedia are known to me, but these sites all have their gaps.

During a quick search on the net I also came across this neat website that you might also like:

I've been asked this before. The best answer I can come up with is...film soundtrack. If you can call it a genre. The best films I find have the best scores.

Other than that, I listen to basically everything. I tend to favor prog metal and symphonic metal and various other metal genres, though.

I've noticed I have a tendency to like all kinds of reggae. I like OMI - Cheerleader, for example.

I think that the low amount of artists whose discographies I've really explored means that I can't exactly single out one genre. However, I often find myself repeatedly thinking of what I consider the 3 most satisfying simple pleasures in life: puppies, ice cream, and female-fronted Scandinavian electropop.

Experimental rock, Krautrock, Noise rock, Proto-Punk, Post-punk, Jazz rock, Industrial rock, No wave and Chamber-folk are probably my favorites, although I listen to a lot of other genres as well.

Number 1 will always be hip-hop and R&B. It was my first love in music. As I've gotten older and with the help of this website, I've learned to appreciate and really like other genres: rock/punk, alternative/indie, metal, jazz, reggae, electronic especially.

On my RYM queries, I exclude the following genres:

post-rock, metal, dark folk, progressive rock, darkwave, video game music, hard rock, psybient, soundtracks, glitch, electroacoustic, tape music, ambient, aor, industrial rock, industrial, klezmer, drone, noisecore

So that means that everything else is in. My favo(u)rites would be (dub) reggae, (deep) house and (electric) blues.

Yay, that's quite a mixed bag of music genres you all prefer there. Thank you for your responses so far!

Here's another nice website to play around with genres:
http://musicovery.com/

By default everything is selected. You can deselect single genres or decades, or first click on "No genre" and then select a genre.
Select and click to play songs.
Rest is self-explaining.

This is a really tough question to answer, as I, like many others have mentioned, enjoy so many genres. I go through periods where I'm listening to a lot of a certain genre (currently I'm on a post-hardcore kick), but I guess the one genre that has been near the forefront of my listening through it all is indie rock, but that's such a broad genre. I'm always keen on genre-bending and -blending, though. I guess I usually like things a bit dark lyrically, though I could go dark or bright sonically. Lately, I've really enjoyed the dream pop production that seems to have boomed this decade (I think The xx's influence is just now being felt the most).

I don't think there's any genre I haven't touched but there are plenty I could explore more. Namely, country, metal, post-rock, ambient, jazz, blues, classical, disco, progressive rock, ska, nearly all world music, and pre-1960's music.

These are the genres of my top 25 all-time albums, per RYM.

hip hop, pop rap, art pop
neo-psychedelia, indie rock, dream pop, psychedelic pop
alternative rock, art rock
indie rock, alternative dance, art pop, new wave
art rock, experimental rock, electronic, ambient
singer/songwriter, alternative rock, acoustic rock
chamber pop, singer/songwriter, indie pop, chamber folk, Americana, folk pop
West Coast hip hop, conscious hip hop
sophisti-pop, art pop, indie pop, ambient pop
alternative R&B, contemporary R&B, neo-soul, psychedelic soul
experimental hip hop, industrial hip hop, hardcore hip hop, drill
alternative rock, art rock, electronic
singer/songwriter, indie folk, contemporary folk, lo-fi indie, Americana
indie rock, chamber pop, post-punk revival
hip hop, conscious hip hop, pop rap, neo-soul
indie rock, slowcore, post-rock, art rock
pop rap, contemporary R&B, alternative R&B
indie rock, chamber pop, art pop, baroque pop
indie rock, alternative rock, noise pop
hardcore hip hop, experimental hip hop
post-hardcore, indie rock
hip hop, pop rap, neo-soul, conscious hip hop, cloud rap, jazz rap
indie rock, chamber pop, post-punk revival
conscious hip hop, West Coast hip hop, jazz rap, political hip hop, funk, neo-soul
electronic, experimental rock, glitch pop, IDM
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

This is an exceptionally difficult question as I tend to dabble in all types of music. I tend to be mostly drawn to music with strong catchy melodies so things with a pop undercurrent to it - lyrics and atmosphere are second to me. I'm rather adverse to heavy rock or experimental music, and hip-hop/rap is very hit or miss - for example something like M.I.A's Kala is brilliant, probably because it has such a strong eletropop influence and I like Kanye West because his music went into more pop territory than what other rappers were doing.
