Thanks for the heads-up. :)

Madonna didn't have a single entry on Pitchfork's 1980s albums and 1990s albums or singles- but surely she has to have at least one entry on here... right?

As to the number 1 song, I really have no idea. If this was Rolling Stone, I'm sure "Billie Jean" would be #1 but this is Pitchfork, the polar opposite of RS. But it'd be great to have a Joy Division song, either "Atmosphere" or the more well-known "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as No. 1.

She might not. Pitchfork doesn't go for (what we think is) the obvious very much. I do think they may have a Madonna song or two but wouldn't be surprised if she is shutout. As for number 1 I could see them picking Depeche Mode 'Personal Jesus'. That's just a very pitchforkian type choice for number 1.

Yep, with Pitchfork, one never knows.

dexter- thanks for the reminder about the previous 500 Songs list. Some of these outlets get awfully fickle when they do multiple lists, so we'll see.

The only way the number 1 is not either Love Will Tear Us Apart or There is a Light That Never Goes Out is if they go for something by Prince or the Pixies.
I don't expect a top 10 that surprising, add to the 4 mentioned (with possibly a 2nd Smiths track) Billie Jean, Like a Prayer, Fight the Power, Radio Free Europe, Teenage Riot and something either by Kate Bush and the Cure and you're probably pretty close to it.
Lots and lots of surprises to be expected in the 51 to 200 though I can imagine.

I could see Teenage Riot or a Pixies song (not sure which one they'd pick) getting number one here. The top ten will definitely have a New Order song and a Talking Heads song too in addition to some of the ones Nassim mentioned. I could see them going contrarian on Joy Division and picking something like Atmosphere for the top ten and then including LWTUA somewhere lower on the list.

I wonder which rap song(s) will make the top ten...I could see Straight Outta Compton being a dark horse instead of something more predictable like Fight the Power or The Message.

Based on the wording, I gather this list will be unveiled all at once, rather than so many a day?

I feel you. I predicted "Nasty" to appear but 3 other Janet Jackson songs made it.

As to the list. The usual suspects made the Top 10 although I pleasantly surprised that Kate Bush made it into the Top 10. I don't mind with "Purple Rain" being #1 rather than “Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'” (Odd top MJ song choice) or “Straight Outta Compton”. I also see several the Cure songs on the list, not complaining though. Some weird choices in the lower half of the list for sure.

It's very mainstream-y for a Pitchfork list and that surprises me that the Depeche Mode choice isn't 'Personal Jesus'.

Though I like all the songs in the top ten, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is a real headscratcher. A great song for sure, but it probably wouldn't make my top 3 songs from "Thriller", much less my top 3 songs of the entire 1980's...

I don't care about "Personal Jesus". I miss "Blasphemous Rumours" and "Stripped".

To each one his priorities. Personally, the absence of David Sylvian and the Fall tracks, and the near absence of Peter Gabriel and Nick Cave are what annoys me most.

Well hey we can't all care about 'Personal Jesus'.I'm just very surprised that such a popular 80s song is missing for that particular group and another less popular one is in it's place considering this list has a lot of mainstream songs. I'm not disappointed it isn't on the list just surprised.

Not a single track by Tom Waits? Yuck.

On the other hand, I've always thought Thriller was all downhill after "Wanna Be Startin' Something," so I'm pleasantly surprised about that, even if it seems like they picked it primarily to throw in a Kanye reference.

List needed more Bruce and R.E.M., but there are alot of things I've never heard before. Alot of the R&B, but I'm guessing I'll know more by sound than by artist if I could ever listen to the list in full. I wish this was in a spotify playlist instead of apple music.

Very predictable top 20 and I don't really like it. But the lower placements are interesting. Lots of songs I haven't heard before.

From a "Pitchfork reader" perspective, no song from The Fall is indeed the biggest surprise.

Definitely a lot to love and hate about this list, but I'll stick to one of each (since the 80's poll ended I haven't listened to many new albums from the decade ):
-Love the inclusion of "Life's What You Make It". I always thought the song got unappreciated because Talk Talk changed their sound a lot on their next album
-I wish they had put "Time After Time" instead of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", but not even a mention? C'mon

Yes, but they're probably two of the most classic rock sounding acts out of the 80s and when it comes to pitchfork, certain acts of that era - of which Bruce, REM, U2, and to a lesser degree Mellencamp (who did have a very productive back half of the 80s) are obvious choices - always get short shrift by P4K's anti-"Rolling Stone/boomer band/classic rock" bias.

I would have expected So Central Rain to make it to the list, but still, I don't think they have an anti R.E.M. stand, or at least not against 80s REM (Murmur was their 5th best albums of the 80s and they have praised heavily all their 80s albums when they have been reedited, Reckoning and Murmur getting a 10) and Bruce and U2 all featured in the Pitchfork 500, this top songs of the 80s and the top 100 albums.
The fact that they make an effort to include much more diversity than RS looks to me more like trying to be more inclusive and unbiased than any list with 12 U2 and 9 Springsteen songs than an anti establishment stance.

I wish they had limited it to one entry per artist like with their '90s list. It gets a bit boring seeing the same names over and over. The main reason I read lists is to discover new music, but it's hard to do that when every-other entry is a Cure song. It was nice of them to pay a little (but only a little) respect to Detroit Techno and Chicago House, though I suspect that's just because Philip Sherburne seems to be writing for them now.

Not wanting to come off as a jerk, but I thought the standard line was that Pitchfork had upped the quality of their writing since going corporate? Some of these guys (Cohen and Weiss spring to mind) write almost as well as the college freshmen whose essays I used to grade :? .

yeah I don't really like that idea. If there is an artist with multiple songs that deserve to be on the list then so be it. This isn't MLB All Star game or something where every team has to have a representative. Put the best songs on there with no limitations.

I was looking at the list on the website, and I noticed that it shows many more "see also"s than there are listed here. Should I write those down?

Personally, the one Jackson song which absence baffled me the most for all these years was "The Way You Make Me Feel", and I'm delighted to know it will be added in the future. The two last songs I like by Michael that are not added are "History (Tony Moran's History Lesson Mix)" (but I perceive it as a guilty pleasure, so I don't mind that much), and "Behind the Mask" (which, on the contrary, I would like to see added).

Napalm Death | You Suffer
If anyone out there is unfamiliar with Napalm Death, this is an extraordinary addition. And I don't necessarily mean "great", but instead mean "totally bizarre". And why is this, you ask?

It's because "You Suffer" is set to become the shortest song ranked or bubbling on AM.

And exactly how short is "You Suffer"?

Exactly 1 second long.

Oh, yeah. I cited "Baby Be Mine" because it was mentioned in that list.

You're right about "The Way You Make Me Feel", great song. Other songs that I miss in the AM: "Who is It", "Earth Song", "Dirty Diana", "You Are Not Alone", "They Don't Care About Us" and "Jam".

"Behind The Mask", "You Rock My World" and "Butterflies" are also good songs.

The two last songs I like by Michael that are not added are "History (Tony Moran's History Lesson Mix)" (but I perceive it as a guilty pleasure, so I don't mind that much), and "Behind the Mask" (which, on the contrary, I would like to see added).

Ah, I forgot about "Jam". I like that song too.

Yep, I hope that one day "Dangerous" (album) get better placement in the AM.

Something to keep in mind is that "later singles" often don't get the acclaim/recognition that earlier singles from an album enjoy. Especially with acts that were known to release a lot of singles from an album (Michael Jackson, especially, with the albums from 1982-1991).

8-) I mean... Well, I don't know what to say. It's a notable record for sure because of its length... But...
Hey, at least it doesn't overstay its welcome! :D

Was there another list that it appeared on?
It also appeared on Q's list of 1010 Songs You Must Own, in the category "Short and to the point"...

It reappeared in the 70s list, which makes sense as it's a 79 song.
