Telephone fused the swagger and energy of hard rock with the urban aggression of punk to emerge as the most admired and influential French band of the post-student revolt era. Their roots lie in Sémolina, an unheralded trio formed in late 1975 by singer/guitarist Jean-Louis Aubert, bassist Daniel Roux, and drummer Richard Kolinka. When their lone WEA single, "Et J'y Vais Déjà," vanished upon its mid-1976 release, Sémolina quickly split; Aubert and Kolinka remained roommates, however, frequently jamming in the cellar of their Paris home.

In late autumn of 1976, Kolinka secured a gig at Paris' American Centre, but when his regular band was unable to commit to the date, he and Aubert recruited Louis Bertignac, a gifted guitarist previously known for supporting singer Jacques Higelin, and bassist Corine Marienneau to assemble a set list comprised of classic rock hits and Aubert's first original compositions. On November 12, Telephone made their debut performance, playing a largely improvised set to a few hundred patrons; loud, snotty, and defiantly primitive, the band effectively reinvigorated French rock in one fell swoop. Though by no means the classic frontman, Aubert nevertheless transcended his limits as a vocalist and guitarist with sheer aggressive energy, becoming the poster boy for a new generation of French rock icons, while Bertignac's raw, electrifying guitar solos evoked antecedents from Keith Richards to Jimmy Page.

After a famously raucous March 1977 appearance at the Paris Metro, Telephone toured in support of British act Eddie & the Hot Rods, followed by a date opening for the seminal American band Television. A June 8th performance at Paris' Bus Palladium yielded Telephone's debut single, "Hygiaphone." Six weeks later, the quartet signed to Pathé-Marconi, teaming with producer Mike Thorne for its self-titled debut LP, issued in November. Telephone supported the album's release with their first headlining tour, culminating in a free show at Paris' Pantin racecourse. With their 1979 sophomore effort, Crache Ton Venin, Telephone rocketed to superstardom -- the single "La Bombe Humaine" emerged as a generational anthem, and the album sold in excess of 600,000 copies, capped off by a performance at the annual Fête de l'Humanité in front of an audience of more than 100,000 people. Tours of Italy, Spain, and North America followed, and while in New York, Telephone began work on their third album, 1981's Au Coeur de la Nuit, which generated the smash single "Argent Trop Cher." The quartet returned home in time for the premiere of Telephone Public, a documentary feature directed by Jean-Marie Périer, previously known as the longtime photographer for the pop magazine Salut les Copaines.

With their contractual obligations to Pathé complete, Telephone leveraged their enormous popularity to negotiate a lucrative new deal with Virgin. Highlighted by the single "Ce Soir Est Ce Soir," their fourth album, Dure Limite, hit stores in conjunction with their June 14, 1982, Paris concert in support of the Rolling Stones. During the headlining tour that followed, Bertignac broke his collarbone in a fall, but Telephone still played the majority of dates, culminating in a sold-out three-night stand at the Paris Hippodrome. But creative dissension began to grow, and breakup rumors reached a fever pitch in the wake of 1984's Un Autre Monde, as all four members of Telephone began to pursue solo projects; while Aubert contributed to an Ethiopian benefit LP recorded by the all-star Chanteurs sans Frontiéres, Marienneau wrote music for the Luc Besson film Subway, and Kolinka founded his own label, Kod.

Finally, in April 1986 Aubert announced the band's demise -- a subsequent live LP proved a bestseller around the same time he and Kolinka reunited with Sémolina bassist Daniel Roux under the name Aubert 'n' Ko, releasing the funk-inspired album Platre et Ciment in 1987, while Bertignac and Marienneau formed Les Visiteurs. With Kolinka still in tow, Aubert began his solo career in earnest with 1989's Bleu Blanc Vert, while Bertignac launched his post-Visiteurs career with 1993's Tony Visconti-produced Elle et Louis. Only Marienneau left the music business, focusing instead on theater.

European pop diva Axelle Red was born Fabienne Demal on February 15, 1968. Demal grew up bilingual, speaking both French and Dutch from her earliest years. A fan of American pop and R&B, she developed a strong interest in singing as a child, beginning to perform in her early teen years. Demal was discovered by a talent scout at age 15, and was invited to record a single, entitled "Little Girls." The song became a national hit, turning Axelle Red into an instant star. Though she studied law and drama for a time, by 1988 she had turned her full attention to her musical career, having signed with the powerful multinational BMG. The song "Kennedy Boulevard," written by Axelle and her musically gifted brothers, became the singer's first gold record, followed shortly thereafter by "Aretha et Moi." In 1992 Axelle Red switched over to Virgin, with whom she produced her first full-length record, Sans Plus Attendre. Thanks to a string of radio hits, the R&B-inflected record would sell 500,000 copies, becoming Belgium's best-selling record of all time. Thanks to several important live appearances and a successful follow-up record, A Tatons, Axelle Red quickly rose to international stardom. Face A/Face B (2002) and French Soul (2004) paid homage to her longtime love affair with American soul and disco music, offering up opportunities to work with some of those genres' most prevalent names. Artist Biography by Andy Kellman (Allmusic)

Yann Destagnol and Romain Tranchart make up Modjo, a France-based downtempo production team. Tranchart's roots are in rock, but he was eventually converted to house after a stint as a guitarist. By the end of 1998, he already had his first production released ("What You're Gonna Do Baby"), under the name Funk Legacy. Destagnol was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter at a young age and shifted to R&B after having spent his formative years devouring pop and rock. The two joined in 1998 and released their first single, "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)," on Sound of Barclay in 2001. By the end of that year, they had their self-titled debut full-length released by MCA.

Artist Biography by Robert Cummings (Allmusic)

Jean Cras was a gifted composer largely known for his chamber works and opera Polyphème (1912-1918). He might well have achieved greater fame had he not maintained a highly successful lifelong career in the French navy. Indeed, Cras reached the rank of rear-admiral and was decorated several times in World War I, achieving particular distinction for his valor in the Adriatic campaign. Musically, he typically garnered far less notice. For one thing, his education was modest, though ultimately adequate: he received no formal advanced training in composition, though he studied privately with Henri Duparc, who would become a lifelong friend and mentor. Cras remained a relatively obscure figure on the musical scene in France except for the final decade or so of his life. Stylistically, Cras was an Impressionist, but a freewheeling one, investing his music with occasional exotic influences inspired by his naval travels, and with Celtic and sacred elements. His later works divulged a more caustic expressive language, but without ever reaching much beyond the style of Bartók. Cras was versatile, turning out works in most genres, including opera, orchestral, chamber, choral, and song.

Jean Cras was born into a musical family in Brest, France, on May 22, 1879. His father was a brilliant naval surgeon whose example led young Jean in 1896 to enroll at the naval academy. In 1900 he relocated to Paris where he studied for three months with his newfound friend Henri Duparc.

Prior to World War I Cras was productive particularly in the realms of chamber, choral, and solo piano music. In 1921 Polyphème, not yet officially premiered, received first prize in the Concours musical de la Ville de Paris. It was premiered the following year by the Opéra-Comique in Paris with great success, and thereafter Cras was a much-in-demand composer in France. Cras now began turning more often to larger forms, as with the 1927 orchestral suite Journal de bord and the stage work Trois Noëls (1929), for vocal soloists, actors, chorus, piano, and orchestra. Cras' brilliant pianist daughter, Collette (wife of Polish émigré composer Alexandre Tansman), premiered Cras' 1931 Piano Concerto with great success. After his death in 1932 Cras was widely eulogized in France as one of the leading figures in French music. But his fame quickly evaporated and he was largely forgotten until the last decade or so of the 20th century.

Journal de Bord (Ship's Log) is in three movements representing the three watches on board ship: I Quart de 8 à minuit; II Quart de minuit à 4; III Quart de 4 à 8. It was written on board 'La Provence' This is a very fine work struck from an imagination (all his own) but cut from the same character-cloth as Uuno Klami's Sea-Pictures (Klami, Finnish though he was, is, in many of his works, amongst the most Gallic-spirited of composers - try also his piano concertos), Bax's Tintagel and Aubert's staggeringly original sea-picture Le Tombeau de Chateaubriand.

Cras's is a bronzen foundry of the waves - at some junctures paralleling La Mer. In the middle movement the moon seems to dance subtly on the waves. The last movement is breezy and up-beat. All in all, a rich effluorescent tapestry like Bax's Spring Fire blended with Dukas's La Péri (in itself an uncannily Baxian piece).

Artist Biography by John Bush (Allmusic)

The man behind such productions as the Mighty Bop (downtempo hip-hop), Bob Sinclar (house), and Réminiscence Quartet (acid jazz) is Chris the French Kiss (aka Christophe le Friant), a Parisian DJ and head of the crucial French label Yellow Productions as well as a producer. Le Friant began DJing in 1987 while still a teenager, and formed Yellow Productions in 1993 with Alain Ho. Several of the first releases on Yellow were by Le Friant: the Mighty Bop's "Messe Pour le Temps Present," Réminiscence Quartet's "Roda Mundo," and his first LP, the French hip-hop summit The Mighty Bop Meet DJ Cam et la Funk Mob. Alongside releases from a parade of excellent French sources, including DJ companions Dimitri from Paris and Kid Loco, Yellow also hosted two more Mighty Bop LPs during 1996-1997, La Vague Sensorielles and Autres Voix, Autres Blues.

Eager to inject some fun into the burgeoning French house underground, Le Friant borrowed the name Bob Sinclar (from a character in the well-known French film Le Magnifique) and in 1997 produced his first Sinclar EP, A Space Funk Project. Soon enough, he had an entire Bob Sinclar LP ready to go, and Paradise appeared on Yellow just in time for summer 1998. One of the album's tracks, "Gym Tonic," began getting some club play in France thanks to its bouncy house vibe and incessant singalong chorus (lifted from a Jane Fonda workout record). A huge anthem during the summer season in Ibiza, "Gym Tonic" looked ready to explode on the charts until Fonda sought legal action for the illegal sample. Perhaps wary of overly burdensome commercial success, the song's co-producer -- Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter, who'd just recorded his own breezy house delight, Stardust's "Music Sounds Better with You" -- refused to have even a remixed version released as a single. Nevertheless, assorted bootlegs cropped up and by October a mysterious artist named Spacedust -- probably just a major-label-fronted cash-in attempt -- hit the top of the charts in Britain with an almost identical remix of the Sinclar-Bangalter original, entitled "Gym and Tonic." (Another crass Spacedust move, covering Bangalter's solo hit with the slimly disguised title "Music Feels Good with You," dropped like a rock.)

With all the offending samples removed, Sinclar's Paradise LP was re-released worldwide in 1999. He also worked on remixes, providing tracks by Bangalter himself, Ian Pooley, Second Crusade, and the Yellow project Tom & Joyce with additional production. Le Friant returned to the Mighty Bop alias in 2000 with the retrospective mix collection Spin My Hits. In 2000, he issued his first U.S. album release as Sinclar, Champs Elysées, on Subliminal Records. The 2001 release Cerrone by Bob Sinclar found him mixing his personal favorites from the back catalog of one of his big influences, Cerrone. After climbing the dance charts in 2005 with the single "Love Generation," he released the full-length Western Dream in 2006. The following year Sinclar put out a mix-tape style CD, Soundz of Freedom, which featured remixes by the likes of Tocadisco and Axwell, alongside a clutch of new songs from the French DJ. His 2009 album Born in ’69 stepped away from his earlier disco-inspired beginnings and toward a more dancehall crossover sound which included collaborations with Shabba Ranks and Kevin Lyttle. He moved further into dub and reggae-influenced sounds in 2010 when he teamed up with legendary producers Sly & Robbie on his seventh release Made in Jamaica. The LP included reggae interpretations of some of his biggest hits, such as “Wold Hold On” and “Love Generation.” Two years later Disco Crash came, and signalled a return to his club roots. Here he revisited the big beats and synth lines that powered his rise to fame and assembled a host of artists, including Sean Paul, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Pitbull, to complete his ninth album.

Algerian singer/songwriter Rachid Taha became an iconic revolutionary figure in his adopted French homeland due to his eclectic blend of native rai and chaabi influences, raw punk energy, and rebellious rock & roll attitude. Born in Sig, Mascara Province in Algeria in 1958, Taha emigrated to France with his family at the age of ten. While working in a heating factory in the '70s, he founded his own nightclub, Les Refoules, which played mash-ups of Arabic pop hits over tracks by the likes of Led Zeppelin and Kraftwerk. In 1980, he formed Maghreb punk outfit Carte de Sejour, who recorded two albums, Rhorhomanie and Ramsa, and scored a hit with an anarchic cover version of Charles Trénet's Douce France, before disbanding in 1989. Two years later, he launched his solo career with debut LP, Barbes, but achieved his biggest success with 1998's traditional Algerian/Arab-inspired Diwan and 2004's Tekitoi, both of which were produced by long-term collaborator Steve Hillier. Taha has also performed with Robert Plant, Patti Smith, and Brian Eno, appeared on-stage with Damon Albarn's side project Africa Express, and covered the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" for the Joe Strummer film, The Future Is Unwritten, while several of his songs have been featured in Hollywood movies including Black Hawk Down and The Truth About Charlie.

The sophomore release from Algerian singer Rachid Taha. This is a stunning album, as he moves through straightforward rai to blues, rock, and the full spectrum of worldbeat. The album starts out with a song about exile from home, followed by a musical history of rai, covering all of the basic steps in the development of Taha's chosen base-style. An Egyptian film song from the great Farid El Atrache continues the barrage of bouncing Middle Eastern and North African sounds. A more modern version of the ay-ay genre ensues, with fuzzed guitars looped throughout. Some urban Algerian blues and a bit of chaabi follow, on the topics of love and love lost. The album finishes with a stretch of slightly more serious songs, with a number based on the Algerian war for independence and the torture endured by its prisoners, a political song from a Moroccan group, a basic rai number in French pidgin, and a song from the frustrated youth of Algeria. This is something of a North African tour-de-force, as Taha moves from one style to another, always partially based in the rai tradition, but always expanding to other styles in the process. The songs can be backed by a simple flute, or by a group of rock guitars. Either way, the works are held together by the overriding compositions that Taha is dealing from. It's a great album for those that are already knowledgeable in rai for its new directions, and a nice album for newcomers as it displays the full breadth in a single disc.

"Ya Rayah" (Arabic: يا رايح Yâ râyiḥ) is an Algerian chaâbi song composed and performed in the 1970s by Dahmane El Harrachi (Amrani Abderrahmane). Up until the past 15 years this song was known to be Dahman El Harrachi's original song and in the Chaâbi/Andalous tradition of Algiers. This song is a ballad of the traveler, the exiled, the longing to come back, the immigrant, the "wanderin' star", etc. hence its universal appeal. In 1993, it was also performed by French-Algerian singer Rachid Taha on his second self titled album. Also in 2003 by Enrico Macias at the Olympia in Paris. There have been also multiple renditions of El Rayah by different artists in different languages including Hebrew, Indu[clarification needed], Turkish, Greek ("Ki an se thelo" by George Dalaras) and some Balkan languages from the former Yugoslavia. In February 1998, the song was certified silver in France.

In January 2012, it was covered again by the Algerian singer Amel Bouchoucha (Fady Bitar & The AB Brothers), using African dance beats and Berber sounds, bringing the song closer to its roots.

Born Alain Le Govic in Paris in 1949, French pop veteran Alain Chamfort cut his teeth in the music industry performing in several bands, including jazz outfit the Dreamers and rock band Murator, before embarking on a solo career. Initially taken under the wing of Claude François, he signed to the Fleche label in 1971, changed his surname to Chamfort, and went on to score several hits in his homeland. But he achieved his biggest success after he parted company with his mentor over "creative differences" and began working with Serge Gainsbourg, who wrote his 1979 million-selling single, "Manureva." Continuing their partnership well into the '80s, Chamfort also produced records for Lio and A Caus des Garçons, but found it tough to compete with his younger upstarts during the '90s. However, he staged a successful comeback in the following decade with his 2003 album, Le Plaisir; a 2010 tribute to Yves Saint-Laurent; and an alternative 2012 hits collection, Elles & Lui.

Vladimir Cosma is a Romanian-born French composer, conductor and violinist, born 13 April 1940 in Bucharest, Romania, into a family of musicians. His father, Teodor Cosma, was a pianist and conductor, his mother a writer-composer, his uncle, Edgar Cosma, composer and conductor, and one of his grandmothers, pianist, a student of the renowned Ferruccio Busoni.

After receiving first prizes for violin and composition at the Bucharest Conservatoire of Music, he arrived in Paris in 1963 and continued his studies at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, working with Nadia Boulanger. As well as for classical music, he discovered early on a passion for jazz, film music and all forms of popular music.

Fernandel - Félicie aussi ! - 1939

Fernand Joseph Désiré Contandin (8 May 1903 – 26 February 1971), better known as Fernandel, was a French actor and singer. Born in Marseille, France, to Désirée Bedouin and Denis Contandin, originating in Perosa Argentina, an Occitan town located in the province of Turin. He was a comedy star who first gained popularity in French vaudeville, operettas, and music-hall revues. His stage name originated from his marriage to Henriette Manse, the sister of his best friend and frequent cinematic collaborator Jean Manse. So attentive was he to his wife that his mother-in-law amusingly referred to him as Fernand d'elle ("her Fernand").

In 1930, Fernandel appeared in his first motion picture and for more than forty years he would be France's top comic actor. He was perhaps best-loved for his portrayal of the irascible Italian village priest at war with the town's Communist mayor in the Don Camillo series of motion pictures. His horse-like teeth became part of his trademark.

He also appeared in Italian and American films. His first Hollywood motion picture was 1956's Around the World in 80 Days in which he played David Niven's coachman. His popular performance in that film led to his starring with Bob Hope and Anita Ekberg in the 1958 comedy Paris Holiday.

In addition to acting, Fernandel also directed or co-produced several of his own films.

Fernandel died from lung cancer and is buried in the Cimetière de Passy, Paris, France.

Diane Tell (born Diane Fortin, 24 December 1958 in Quebec City, Quebec) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She first studied music (violin and classical guitar) at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal and the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Val-d'Or, then studied jazz guitar at Cégep de Saint-Laurent in Montreal. She started writing songs at the age of 12 and signed her first record deal at 18. She was probably the first female French Canadian singer songwriter to record her own songs exclusively. Passi (French pronunciation: ​[paˈsi]) is a French hip hop artist who became famous in the mid-1990s with the group Ministère AMER, which included himself and Stomy Bugsy. He is most widely known, however, as a solo artist, as well as a participant in many other groups, such as Bisso Na Bisso and Dis l'heure 2 zouk.

Passi was born on 21 December 1972, in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. In 1979, his family moved to Sarcelles, a suburb of Paris. He graduated from lycée and created the band Ministère AMER with Stomy Bugsy, who he had gone to school with. The group's first album, Pourquoi tant de haine?, was released in 1992, and Passi was forced to end his agronomy studies at the University of Paris (Nanterre) to be able to focus on music. Ministère AMER followed up with "95200" which was released in 1994.

Passi's first solo album, Les tentations, was released in 1997, and it sold 450,000 copies. The project Bisso na Bisso (meaning 'Just between ourselves' in Lingala, Congo's most widely spoken language), was a collective of French hip hop artists with African origins. It included names such as Ärsenik, and he released their album Racines in 1999. That same year, Passi released his second solo album, Genèse.

In 2002, Passi was asked to create the anthem for the African Nations Cup football competition together with Congolese singer Papa Wemba. The two eventually managed to attract into the project such names as Youssou N'Dour and Cheb Mami. Passi's third album, Odyssée, came out in 2004.

Passi is also known as the artist whose song, "Il fait chaud" ("It's hot"), was featured in the last episode in the television show, Sex and the City. The song was not credited at the end of the show, leaving many viewers to call the song simply "The French Rap".

Ultra Orange & Emmanuelle was a collaboration between French actress Emmanuelle Seigner and Ultra Orange.
The Ultra Orange of this merger is duo Pierre Emery and Gil Lesage, who released two previous albums in France before teaming up with Seigner. Their self-titled album released on 26 March 2007 they have been likened to such artists as Mazzy Star, Sonic Youth and even Brigitte Bardot.

Like so many French composers of the latter third of the twentieth century, Gérard Grisey began more or less as an academic-style twelve-tone composer but found, as he moved through his twenties, that only a complete change of musical scenery -- a break from the ways of serialism and the embrace of what was to him a more instinctive approach -- would enable him to achieve his goals as a musician. The result of his new path was a kind of music-making that eventually became widely known as "musique spectrale," an exploration into the fundamentals of pitch, harmony, and musical time that exerted a heavy influence on the next generation of composers (French ones in particular); but the father of this new musical syntax was one of the first to have to abandon it -- Grisey died of an aneurysm in 1998, aged just 52.

Born in Belfort, in 1946, Grisey studied at several eminent French and German institutions: Trossingen Conservatory, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, l'École Normale Supérieure de Musique, the Paris Conservatoire, IRCAM, and the Darmstadt Summer Courses, all at various times between 1963 and 1974. While working as a freelance composer, Grisey co-founded the ensemble L'Itinéraire for the purpose of promoting and playing new music. From the mid-1970s on, he was active as a teacher as well, first at the Darmstadt Summer Courses (1976 - 1982), then on the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley (1982 - 1985), and finally at the Paris Conservatoire (from 1987 until his death).

Partiels (1975) is a defining piece of Spectral music by Gérard Grisey whose opening is derived from an electronic sonogram analysis of the attack of a low E2 on a trombone. This spectrum is orchestrally synthesized through the assignation of different instruments to each partial in such a way as to harmonically and gesturally model the dynamic temporal evolution of the attack. Many second and third generation spectral composers cite Partiels as causing their initial interest in the spectral outlook.

Thus the opening features the successive entrance of lower partials with the fifth and ninth partials being louder than lower ones, including the fundamental, and all higher partials gradually trailing off in amplitude. Each partial is approximated to the nearest quarter tone. A low bass reinforces the fundamental an octave lower on the open E1 string which is central to Les Espaces Acoustiques cycle of which Partiels is a part.

The piece also makes use of sum and difference tones to create harmonies.[5]

David Grammont, better known under his stage name Tonton David is a French Reggae singer born in Réunion. He is renowned for his raggamuffin performances, but uses influences of soul music, gro kâ (from the French West Indies), the Zairian rumba.

Channeling the rebellious spirit of Patti Smith, the dramatic style of Siouxsie Sioux, and the whiskey-soaked vocal presence of Janis Joplin, Izia tears her way through the primitive post-punk of the title track, the groove-laden blues-rock of "I Hate You," and the menacing grunge of "I Can Dance" with the gusto of a woman possessed, while the constant stream of Led Zeppelin-esque riffs, flashes of psychedelia, and primal garage rock beats reveal that her professed love of vintage '70s rock wasn't just hollow talk. A few more melodic offerings showcase a slightly softer side, such as the floaty chanteuse style she adopts on the angular indie disco of "Penicilline," the sweeping orchestral finale on the gothic early PJ Harvey-inspired "Twenty Times a Day," and the slinky but sinister minimal lounge-pop of "That Night." But Izia is a much more captivating prospect when she appears to be unleashing her inner demons, whether it's on the furiously percussive "Top of the World," the Morricone-meets-the Strokes vibes of "She," or the raucous rock & roll of "Your Love Is a Gift." I try to choose songs of all decades in the maximum different genre.

J'essaye de ne mettre qu'une chanson par artiste pour le moment, et pas forcément la plus connue, j'ai encore environ 500 groupes ou chanteurs à venir (et j'en rajoute sans cesse dans ma liste "à venir") mais il y a clairement des styles musicaux que je ne maîtrise pas ou que je ne connais pas du tout (metal / ghotique / r'n'b / rap).
