Films of the '70s: 1976

Post by Stephan »

You can post a list of anywhere between 5 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. The deadline is June 10th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1976, from a variety of sources:

I've only seen 4 films from this year and really want to vote up Kings Of The Road, any recommendations?

My top 4 right now consists of Taxi Driver, Network, All The President's Men and The Outlaw Josie Wales. I'm assuming you've seen the first two, but the other two are also worth a viewing. I'm personally going to check out 1900, The Tenant, and possibly Kings of the Road if I can find the time.

I would like to see Kings of the Road, but it doesn't seem to be terribly available around here.

Actually I haven't seen Network, maybe I'll check out that one, especially if it's insta-viewable on Netflix.

I only got to see Kings Of The Road through a region 2 import. I don't know how you'll be able to see it unless you're willing to pay, which I was because only because I love Paris Texas and Wings of Desire so much.

Thanks, but paying is not the real problem (don't want to buy it, but renting would be fine). It's just not physically available.

I don't know what to say about Novecento.. given its cinematography, actors, director and story it could have been excellent, but it's so campy and over the top.. and being 5 hours doesn't help either.

Gillingham, that's what I meant, willing to buy. You could find it used on Amazon UK if you wanted. But if you're not willing to buy, you're going to have trouble finding it.

And the results are in. With only 10 voters I believe an all-time low, perhaps indicating that this year really wasn't that strong.

#. Title (Director) - Points/Voters/#1s
1. Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese) - 367/10/5
2. Network (Sidney Lumet) - 254/9/0
3. All the President's Men (Alan J. Pakula) - 225/8/0
4. Rocky (John G. Avildson) - 157/6/1
5. Le locataire [The Tenant] (Roman Polanski) - 156/7/0
6. The Outlaw Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood) - 141/6/1
7. Carrie (Brian De Palma) - 130/7/0
8. Novecento [1900] (Bernardo Bertolucci) - 129/5/2
9. Marathon Man (John Schlesinger) - 119/5/0
10. Monsieur Klein (Joseph Losey) - 89/3/0

Bertolucci gets his third film through while Scorsese and Polanski get a second one in the next round.

Can we drop the five movie minimum? I didn't have time and Kings Of The Road really deserved to make it.

I don't want Tree Of Wooden Clogs to miss in 1978 because I only saw four films from the year and didn't have time to watch a fifth.

Sure, I suppose we can do that. I can't retroactively do it for this year though, because it would drop out one of Michel and Miguel's favorite films after the deadline.

I guess it would be more useful to drop the mimimum of five, if that would mean that the number one of lists containing less than five films would yield less than 50 points.

That's a very good idea. I reckon we could just use 40, 30, 25, 20 for a list containing only four items, 30, 25, 20 for one containing three, etc.
