AMF Chart Week 18 2015

Post by Setherex »

Welcome to Week 18 of the AMF Chart! The chart where somehow we've found the perfect balance between old staples and new entries. In other words, we've found nirvana, everyone.

Here are your rankings for Week 17 (number of weeks on the chart so far in parentheses):
1. Grimes - "REALiTi" (7)
2. Sufjan Stevens - "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" (10)
3. Kendrick Lamar - "King Kunta" (6)
4. Tame Impala - "Let It Happen" (7)
5. Courtney Barnett - "Depreston" (8)
6. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "Piss Crowns Are Trebled" (5)
7. Colin Stetson & Sarah Neufeld - "The Sun Roars Into View" (1)
7. Dan Deacon - "Learning to Relax" (1)

14. Cœur de Pirate - "Carry On" (2)
14. Nadine Shah - "Fool" (2)
16. STUFF. - "Event Horizon" (1)
17. Bully - "Trying" (1)
17. Futurebirds - "Painted Tears" (1)
17. Peter Bjorn and John - "High Up (Take Me to the Top)" (1)
17. Wet - "Deadwater" (1)
Total Votes: 104

Congratulations to Sufjan Stevens' "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" for making it into our Hall of Fame! As Sufjan exits the race, several more artists are eyeing his position, and are practically guaranteed to get it in the upcoming weeks. But still, five new entries is quite the healthy week. We've found a very interesting balance between new and old, it appears. I'm interested in seeing how that works when the pantheon of great music we have in the chart at the moment is eventually retired. Due to Sufjan Stevens' retirement from the chart, as well as the tie for 11th place, the top 12 songs otherwise went through to this week's chart.

2015 Chart-Toppers by Week (by vote count, not chart position; total weeks atop chart in parentheses):
1. Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me" (2) / Kanye West feat. Paul McCartney - "Only One"
2. Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me" (3)
3. Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me" (4)
4. Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me" (5) / Belle and Sebastian - "Nobody's Empire"
5. Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me" (6)
6. Belle and Sebastian - "Nobody's Empire" (2)
7. Björk - "Black Lake"
8. Björk - "Black Lake" (2)
9. Belle and Sebastian - "Nobody's Empire" (3) / Björk - "Black Lake" (3)
10. Sufjan Stevens - "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross"
11. Grimes - "REALiTi"
12. Grimes - "REALiTi" (2)
13. Grimes - "REALiTi" (3) / Kendrick Lamar - "King Kunta" / Sufjan Stevens - "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" (2)
14. Kendrick Lamar - "King Kunta" (2)
15. Kendrick Lamar - "King Kunta" (3)
16. Grimes - "REALiTi" (4)
17. Grimes - "REALiTi" (5)

2015 Hall of Fame (10 weeks of advancing votes; automatically retired from chart):
Björk - "Black Lake" (Weeks 4 - 13)
Courtney Barnett - "Pedestrian at Best" (Weeks 5 - 14)
Father John Misty - "I Love You, Honeybear" (Weeks 7 - 16)
Sufjan Stevens - "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" (Weeks 8 - 17)

Here is this week's 18-song Spotify chart (with 2 songs included below via YouTube link):

Here is your 2015 AMF Chart playlist of all songs on the chart so far this year:

Thank you all for voting and nominating continuously every week! Please don't be afraid to supply us with nominations - all songs six months old and younger (or who have received promotion via album/video/single in the last six months) are accepted! And seconding nominations by others' gives those songs a better chance at making the next poll!

As per usual, the next poll will be created as close to Sunday at 19:00 UTC as I can make it. Best of voting! :D

Okay, this week I'm gonna reviews songs that I nominated, to at least give you an idea what those songs are about and why I like it.

Re-nomination form last week:
Soak - Sea Creatures (Soak was named as one of the artist to watch according to the BBC "Sound of 2015" (not that I really care about that poll), "Sea Creatures" was the song that made everyone in her native Northern Ireland fall in love with her. The song's about finding strength after being bullied - Sea Creatures are those of the tormentors.

Gengahr - She's a Witch (a relatively unknown band, but a lyrics for this song is actually quite smart and funny as well, look at the intro ( "Maybe she'll sink Maybe she'll fly I've got a witch that cries all the time") who could risist that?

and 2 new songs:
Mew - Satellites (I always like Mew, mainly for their adventurous sound, and this new song doesn't disappointed me. I still need some more listens to get it in my head though.

Cat's Eyes - The Duke of Burgundy (the intro song for the wonderful film of the same name; this song not only supports the theme of the movie, but also stands well on its own,the people behind it consist of the Horror's front man, so you'll know what to expect. My recommendation: Watch this movie. Listen to this song!

Apologies Rdwdbob! "Picture You" is a repeat nomination from last year. In fact, it's been re-nominated a couple times since... Some unusual interest for that song around these parts.

Quick question Setherex: why can't this song, 'Picture You',make the list? Over the six month limit? The LP was released here in the States in February I believe.

That's right, I also tried to nominate it again at the beginning of this year. That's all due to the reverse Doppler boomerang effect ...

I'll second 'Compound Fracture'. One of those albums that just keeps getting better and better with each listen. My favorite of the year so far. :music-rockon:
