AM Classical Poll: Concertos

Post by whuntva »

Round One was a hit. Let's move on!

Alright, we finally start Round 1.

This time, I want "a musical composition for a solo instrument or instruments accompanied by an orchestra"

In other words, one dominant instrument with a little backup.

I actually think this will be slightly easier than symphonies because more concertos have become famous.

If there is any ambiguity, please save it for other orchestral.

I will accept a list of at least five. If you want to submit more than fifteen, be my guest. But only the first fifteen will be counted. Top twenty will make it to the final pool of pieces.

Point sum:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPECIFY A RECORDING!! I'll leave it open two weeks.

As I did with symphonies, the cover arts reflect the versions I own or the ones I am more familiar with, not necessarily the best ones:

1. ANTONIO VIVALDI "Concerto No. 2 in G minor, "L'estate" (Summer)" (1725). Favourite part: "III. Presto"
If the complete "Le quattro stagioni" were eligible (in fact usually appear as a whole in concerts and albums) it should be everyone's #1. The best one in my opinion is the second one ("L'Estate") if only for this tumultuous but ravishing "Presto" (a.k.a. "The Storm"). Glorious. But what can I say? I'm a barocker, baroque runs through my veins.

2. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART "Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A major" (1791). Fav: "II. Adagio"
The second movement (the sublime "Adagio") definitely should be included in the definition of the word "beauty."

3. SERGEI RACHMANINOFF "Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor" (1901). Fav: "I. Moderato"
Not as technically demanding as Concerto No. 3 (remember Shine) but surely much more emotional and moving.

4. GEORGE GERSHWIN "Rhapsody in Blue" (1924)
A piece that changed the music landscape, the missing link between classical and jazz, between popular and cult.

5. JOHANNES BRAHMS "Violin Concerto in D major" (1878). Fav: "III. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace - Poco più presto"
"Never been able to hear it the same way since Paul Thomas Anderson used it to brilliant effect in There Will Be Blood" (Asher Gelzer-Govatos)

6. JOAQUÍN RODRIGO "Concierto de Aranjuez" (1939). Fav: "II. Adagio"
7. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART "Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major" (1784). Fav: "I. Allegro"
8. PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY "Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor" (1893). Fav: "I. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso - Allegro con spirito"
9. JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major" (1721). Fav: "I. [No tempo indication, usually played as Allegro]"
10. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN "Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Emperor Concerto" (1811). Fav: "I. Allegro"
11. DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH "Cello Concerto No. 2 in G major" (1966). Fav: "I. Largo"
12. ANTONIO VIVALDI "Concerto No. 1 in E major, "La primavera" (Spring)" (1723). Fav: "I. Allegro"
13. FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN "Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor" (1830). Fav: "I. Allegro maestoso"
14. IGOR STRAVINSKY "Violin Concerto in D major" (1931). Fav: "III. Capriccio"
15. ANTONIN DVOŘÁK "Cello Concerto in B minor" (1830). Fav: "III. Finale: Allegro moderato - Andante - Allegro vivo"

Henry listed Gershwin's An American in Paris, but that is not a concerto, but a symphonic poem...?

1| Bach / Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (I really want to list all six of the concertos, and they are usually grouped as such on lists, but very well. Same with the Four Seasons)
2| Bartok / Concerto for Orchestra
3| Rachmaninoff / Piano Concerto No. 2
4| Vivaldi / Four Seasons "Spring"
5| Brahms / Violin Concerto
6| Gershwin / Rhapsody in Blue (does this count, I see others are listing it?)*
7| Dvorak / Cello Concerto
8| Beethoven / Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor"
9| Tchaikovsky / Piano Concerto No. 1
10| Elgar / Cello Concerto
11| Mozart/ Clarinet Concerto
12| Mendelssohn / Violin Concerto
13| Schumann / Piano Concerto
14| Ravel / Piano Concerto in G major
15| Grieg / Piano Concerto

*(If the Gershwin is disqualified, then bump up the rest and place Beethoven's Violin Concerto at No. 15)

Re: AM Classical Poll: Concertos

BTW, just so I get a handle on how we are conducting these polls, the polls are being divided into six categories?

I was thinking, in order to solve everyone's tastes, it should go like:

1. Symphonies (DONE)
2. Concertos
3. Solo Instruments
4. Ensembles
5. Opera + Vocal + Choral Religious Music
6. Other: Non-Symphonic Orchestral Works, Program Music, Experimental Minimalist Pieces (25 for this one, like Honorio suggested)

Of course, Whuntva is the host, so he makes the decision.

I will go with Honorio's template. I think 25 is good for the Other ategory as there are so many.

I looked it up. Rhapsody in Blue is indeed considered a piano concerto. I will let it slide.

American in Paris however is best saved for other orchestral.

I have a list. Just give me a while to process it.

Thanks for voting!

Many thanks for accepting my suggestion.
A quick question (now that I'm beginning to do some listening for the next part of the poll): the pieces written for two instruments (as the sonatas for violin and piano) are going to be included in the "solo instruments" or in the "ensemble" part? I suppose that there will be included in the "ensemble/chamber" category (for instance in Rateyourmusic are included like that) but I'm asking just to clarify it.
By the way, if you're looking for some inspiration for the solo and chamber works don't hesitate to go to the superb Dan's Spotify playist.

Solo and Ensemble is all chamber. They are one category.

Also, i probably shouldn't have closed at noon my time last round. I'll leave it open until midnight this Saturday.

My vote:

1) Bach-Brandenburg Concerto #3
2) Vivaldi-Four Seasons "Spring"
3) Gershwin-Rhapsody in Blue
4) Dvorak-Piano Concerto in D Minor
5) Rachmaninoff-Piano Concerto #2
6) Tchaikovsky-Piano Concerto #1
7) Brahms-Cello Concerto
8) Mozart-Clarinet Concerto
9) Beethoven-Piano Concerto #5
10) Vivaldi-Four Seasons "Winter"
11) Mozart-Piano Concerto #21
12) Grieg-Piano Concerto
13) Schumann-Piano Concerto
14) Vivaldi-Four Seasons "Summer"
15) Ravel-Piano Concerto in G Minor

And I also saw this pop up in posts, but I consider each part of Four Seasons and Brandenburg Concertos as separate pieces. They will be counted as such.

Here is my list, nothing very incredible, very classical. I'm a huge fan of concertos, it's probably the genre I prefer, and the top 10 here is certainly the classical works I listen the more.

Guys, the second movement of the concerto en sol de Ravel... the adagio...guys ...does it exist on earth more beautiful thing?

9. Georges Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
10. Maurice Ravel - Concerto pour la main gauche
11. Sergueï Rachmaninov - Concerto pour piano n°2 op18
12. Antonin Dvorak - Concerto pour violoncelle
13. Ludwig Von Beethoven - Concerto pour piano n°5 "L'empereur"
14. Johannes Brahms - Concerto pour piano et orchestre n°2 op.83
15. Sergueï Rachmaninov - Concerto pour piano n°4 op40

And I'm totally amazed by the lack of Concerto pour violon by Beethoven in you lists...I always thought it was the greatest, the most well known, the most beautiful ever written concertos, I'm totally surprised. :o

Alright! We had a clear lead throughout, but as I was calculating, I noticed a lot more turnover this round.

1) Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra/200 points
2) Bach-Brandenburg Concerto #3/181 points
3) George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue/144 points
4) Vivaldi - Four Seasons "Spring"/142 points
5) Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No 1/139 points
6) Beethoven-Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major/124 points
7) Rachmaninoff-Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor/107 points
8) Brahms - Violin Concerto in D major/89 points
9) Beethoven - Violin Concerto/75 points
10) Mozart-Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A major/62 points
11) Mozart -Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major/55 points
12) Vivaldi-Four Seasons “Summer”/52 points
13) Grieg-Piano Concerto/51 points
14) Ravel-Piano Concerto in G/45 points
15*) Bruch-Violin Conerto #1/40 points
15*) John Adams-Violin Concerto-40 points

Tie for fifteenth! TWO pieces each had 20 points.

Only vote for the ONE you want to advance! Poll will be open for 24 hours to rectify this.

Ah, yes! My Mistake.

In that case, they both advance, and the remaining four are...

17) Dvorak-Cello Concerto/37 points
18) Mozart-Piano Concerto #20/32 points
19) Bach-2 Violins/30 points
20) Bach-Brandenburg Concerto #6/30 points

But hey, it wouldn't be a poll without at least one error by the host.

We move on to the next round...Vocal pieces!

:o what a strange final result. It's the first time I see, in this website, a result so much different from the "critics".

Bartok in first place, it's like, in a 60's poll, we have an album by Zappa in the first place : good but very intriguing.
And two huge and magnificient concerti are not here : Violin concerti by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, two part of the famous tetralogy of violin concerti with those of Beethoven and Brahms. (like in a top album of all time, we have no Dylan and no Beatles album  )

1) Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra/200 points
2) Bach-Brandenburg Concerto #3/181 points
3) George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue/144 points
4) Vivaldi - Four Seasons "Spring"/142 points

Tchaikovsky's violin concerto was probably a victim of the aim for diversity. I didn't include it because I already had five violin concertos and Tchaikovsky's piano concerto. The Concerto for Orchestra is great (my #3), but if it wasn't for its title people might see it as a symphony rather then a concerto. I'm a bit disappointed Prokofiev didn't make the top 20. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" I don't like: I associate it too much with waiting on the telephone and music teachers in high school. That's why I included another Vivaldi concerto instead.

Very interesting comment, Romain. But I find two reasons that can explain this fact:
1) There are few voters if we compare it with other polls. We all know that more voters more consensus (I mean that the polls with more voters always end mirroring the critics lists). Anyway 10 people voting on this poll are more than I expected.
2) We are not too aware of the critics' lists about classical, at least on the same level as we are about pop critics' lists (especially in the context of the Acclaimed Music Forum, the best meta-list about pop music out there). In fact to my knowledge there is not a consensus critic list on the subject. There are many individual critic lists (some of them fantastic) but the closest thing to a consensus list I found are the ABC classic FM surveys (see there), and this is an Australian listeners poll.

By the way I checked the violin concertos on this ABC Classic list and there are two violin concertos ranked higher than this tetralogy, the ones by Bruch and Sibelius.
And anyway probably no Mendelssohn and no Tchaikovsky is not like having no Dylan and no Beatles album. If we compare the list of Phil Goulding of Top 50 greatest composers and the official AM artist lists is more like not having R.E.M. and The Beach Boys (#10 and 11) on the top albums of all time.

One final comment: I'm quite sad of not having Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" on the last round. It was probably the one and only opportunity of having a Spanish classical piece on the final 125.

Thanks BonieLaurel and Honorio for your answers.

For the violin concertos, I don't speak properly of the classical critics list... I don't even know if this kind of thing exist.
We have six violin concerto above all others : Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bruch and Sibelius (confirmed by your link) - all the six are wonderful and magnificient piece of music, but for what I hear on the classical channels or radios, the first four are more commonly considered the greatest.

It's not really important, I just noticed that for the piano concerti, the most common choices are all here and surprised to see it's not the case for the violon.

Whatever, I love all the choices on our final list :music-rockon: althought I like least the baroque form than the romantic or pré-romantic ones.

And for the concertio de Aranjuez, it's ashamed, I simply forget it. It's obviously a masterpiece (if you like concerto for guitare, I hope you know the concerto by Villa-Lobos... If not, go go go !)

Yes, I know the Villa-Lobos concerto too (and it's great). I'll include anyway two works for solo classical guitar on the solo poll.

One by Fernando Sor maybe ?

The solo poll is too huge, to many great pieces... I don't know for now what I will put in my list.

It makes me think that I will probably put a Bachianas Brasileiras (n°5) on the vocal poll :

Well, I was thinking about Francisco Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" and maybe also Benjamin Britten's "Nocturnal after John Dowland." But, who knows, maybe I could include something by Sor too. As you just said, too many great pieces on this field.
