Post by nicolas »

Episode 4 : 1993

Please submit at least your favorite 5 songs and/or albums of the year 1993. Lists must be ranked. Only the top 15 songs/albums will be given points.

The deadline is midnight (Pacific Time) on the 31st of May. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

15 albums/songs per year will advance, including at least 1 non anglophone album/song(the Nicolas/Henrik act). To be eligible to the second round, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes.

Please submit your list starting with #1 (no reverse order please) according to the following example

Artist - Album/Song

you can use 1), 1. or whatever separation character you like but what matters is not to reverse the song order and respect the artist - song order.

EPs and compilations are not allowed. The generally admitted reference for dates is Rate Your Music, unless proven otherwise.

Bit of a weird list this year, I suppose. No album really stands out, but the top 15 or so are all solid and close together. The top 2 are remnants of the past, which have already dropped in score quite a bit and perhaps when I remake my lists in the future they'll drop even more, but for now they still top the list.

Albums:
1. Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstacy
2. Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales
3. АукцЫон - Птица
4. Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
5. Ry Cooder & V.M. Bhatt - A Meeting By The River
6. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
7. Suede - Suede
8. The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
9. Slowdive - Souvlaki
10. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Songs:
1. Sting - Shape Of My Heart
2. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World
3. Sting - Fields Of Gold
4. Meat Loaf - Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are
5. Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
6. The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
7. Sarah McLachlan - Possession
8. Pet Shop Boys - Go West
9. Liz Phair - Fuck And Run
10. Sarah McLachlan - Fear

While I highly doubt it has a chance, here's my song that I'm campaigning for this month:
This has been a favorite ever since the first time I heard it, and has now climbed into my top 10 all time. It is transcendent and emotionally moving both sonically and lyrically, covers a range of emotions from upbeat and optimistic to sad and cyncial, and manages to be simultaneously catchy and experimental. Basically, it's everything Disco Inferno was ever trying to be, and should have been a smash with the critics. Even those turned off by the abrasiveness of the rest of DI's output should like this track.

Hopefully I can covert a few by posting this.

Here’s my albums list in progress. I’ve listened to most of the albums only once, so some of them might move up or down the list when I listen to them again.

At the moment, Wu-Tang Clan is at the top of my list. The raw underground sound of Enter the Wu-Tang has often been imitated in mainstream hip-hop but never surpassed.

Björk’s Debut is currently my #2, and I like that album for announcing the start of a great solo career by a unique female artist with an ecclectic (and often eccentric) approach to music.

Black Dog Productions’ Bytes currently sits at #3. It’s an underrated ambient techno album that gives some credibility to the term IDM (Intelligent Dance Music)... but I need to listen to it again when I’m sober and not after a night out.

And every month I seem to be enjoying country, country rock and alt-country more and more (albums by Dwight Yoakam, Grant Lee Buffalo and Blue Rodeo are all in my top 15). When the elitist hipster that was still hiding somewhere inside of me saw Dwight Yoakam at #4 on my list, he packed his bags and left. And I won’t miss him.
...will keep us together.

I was going to vote for "the last dance" but it is basicaly the same song, would be a shame to split vote (still, I prefer The Last Dance...)

Yeah, votes for "The Last Dance" and "The Long Dance" should count as one and the same. "The Long Dance" is basically a remix of "The Last Dance," but I do prefer the longer version due to the extended (and incredible) outro and stronger transitions between verses.

For the second month in a row, my favourite song is a discovery from the AMF Foreign World Cup game. Last month it was Cesária Évora’s Sodade and this month it’s Rachid Taha’s Ya Rayah, which Nicolas nominated for the North African part of the game.

I have to confess that the first time I heard it, I thought it was a bit corny, like the kind of song you would hear on an Algerian tourism commercial which tries to lure Westerners into visiting the country. Then I listened to it a few times more and realised how ignorant I was. Before I knew it, I was captivated by it (especially the great oud part). And for a while I couldn’t stop listening to it.

sonofsamian, Jesus Blood Never Failed Me yet will be in my list. It was originally recorded in 1975, but the 93 version is different and extended. It's my current #7. Too bad you didn't put in in yr list. It is perfectly eligible. It's concidered as an album by RYM and I read in the liner notes that even the first track is modified (a different mix);
It's one of the most moving and otherwordly pieces of music I've ever heard, especially the first 25 minutes.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Beavis and Butthead wouldn't headbang to any of those songs. But, seeing as they debuted in '93 and the smilie was there, I couldn't resist. They might have given their trademark giggle to that Liz Phair title.

I was also puzzled by that strange release date in RYM so I checked other sources and it turns out that it's a mistake.
Every fan source (like this oneand sites like Discogs or Wikipedia have it as 1995. Plus the release dated as 1993 by RYM is supposed to be a promo item, not available for sale, so

"Blue" by The Jayhawks is not from 1993 but from 1995

Andre and John, I suppose that you'll want to move your songs up accordingly

OK nicolas, you talked me into it. I've edited my post. Jesus' Blood is now No. 6, Schnittke's ungodly Symphony 1 is No. 3, and Einstein '93 is No. 12. The rest has been shuffled around. Also, I removed "Blue" from the songs list, I was baffled by the date since I remembered it from '95, and that helps me feel a little less senile. :)

I had the iPod on shuffle as I was busy doing stuff today and there were 2 songs from 1993 that came up that I have not heard in a long time, both would have made their way onto my Honorable Mention list...

An Emotional Fish -- Rain
Judybats -- Being Simple

I usually listen to albums for these polls a month or so in advance, and as I’ll be travelling around quite a bit over the next couple of weeks with intermittent access to the internet, I’ve been giving myself more time than usual to listen to albums for next month’s 1994 poll. And Jesues, what a year!

I realise that the concept of “a better year than others” is very subjective, but 1993 was a meh year for music IMO. From what I’ve heard so far, I’m really loving 1994 (and there are plenty of albums I still need to listen to). So I guess what I’m trying to say is this: If (like me) you want to listen to as many good albums as possible for these polls, then don’t waste too much on 1993 and give yourself more time to listen to albums from 1994. There are too many great albums from 1994 to listen to in one month.

PS: Stephan, for what it’s worth, I’ll make sure to vote in the Foreign World Cup game. As I understand it, the next round will be Western Europe. There’s no way I’m missing out on chanson heaven. :music-listening:
...will keep us together.

My analytic side wonders why Siamese Dream is not your favorite album when 3 of your top 14 songs are from the Siamese Dream album and no other album has more than 2 in the top 15 (Enter the Wu Tang Clan). My guess is that there are some songs on the Siamese Dream album that just don't work for you, or that some other yet to be understood (by me) aspect(s) of your top 5 albums move them ahead of Siamese Dream. Again this is just me wondering.
