Moderately Acclaimed Albums 6 (2015) - Submissions Now Open!

Post by Brad »

It’s time to begin the nomination process for the 6th installment of Best Moderately Acclaimed Album!

Best Moderately Acclaimed Album is a voting game where only albums and EPs not ranked in the top 500 are eligible. This includes all "bubblers" and completely unacclaimed albums and EPs.

There will be a single elimination draw with 128 albums, and now it's time to pick them.

Send me an ordered list of ten nominations at ModAcc3@aol.com. Please include the artist name and album name as they appear on AM, as well as the AM rank.

You have until Sunday, February 1st to make nominations (this may be extended if not all slots are filled).

I will select nominations as follows:
First I will go through and pick all the first place albums
Then, I will go through and pick all the second place albums
Then, the third place albums, etc, until the draw fills up.

No more than 25 will be picked ranked 1000 or higher, no more than 50 ranked 1500 or higher, no more than 75 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 100 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list. If after the month the draw is not filled, there'll be a first come-first serve round posted on the forum.

I will then sort the selections into quadrants based on their rankings, and then create a bracket by randomly sorting each quadrant.

During the competition period (which will begin in early March), we will choose one match-up from each quadrant (starting at the top of each quadrant) in the field and square them off against each other in a week-long voting period.

Additional rules:
- No one person can nominate more than one album by the same artist.
- No albums that qualified for the 2014 Moderate game are eligible.
- No albums that qualified for the 2013 Moderate game are eligible, except those that were eliminated in Round 1.
- No albums that qualified for the 2012 Moderate game are eligible, except those that were eliminated in Round 1 or Round 2.
- From the 2011 Moderate game, only those albums that were eliminated in Rounds 1-3 are eligible.
- From the first Moderate game, only those albums that were eliminated in Rounds 1-4 are eligible.
- No albums from 2014 are eligible (the eventual winner of the Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2014 will automatically be entered).

Sound confusing? Don't worry - I've included the list of non-eligible albums below.

Again, to give people time to listen to as many of the albums as they have time for, the actual voting won't start until early March (a month after the bracket is published).

Here's a list of the albums that are ineligible per the above stated restrictions:

Oh never mind, my mistake. Edited my post. I had two things, but just one thing now. It's that "MA2012 winner" is listed, but that's barely noteworthy.

I sent my list. Thanks for organizing this game again!

Thanks PlasticRam - actually, I think you were right on both counts... Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace was last year's winner, so is not eligible. I will replace the "MA2012 Winner" (which should have said "MA2013 Winner") line with Foxygen.

Thanks for checking that!

Since my last post, I've received lists from the following:

Rob - Thanks for reaching out... no, I can't seem to find it. Would you mind re-sending? Or you can send it in a private message through the board here, if that works. Either way, I won't tally the nominations until I get your list. Sorry for the complications!

In the meantime, I've also received submissions from Henrik and Gillingham.

I'm gonna go ahead and close submissions for this year's Moderately Acclaimed tournament.

We had a record 24 submissions this year - outstanding! (The downside is many great picks will be left out, but there's always next year!)

Here's a list of folks who submitted:
acroamor
Blanco
Brad
DaveC
Gillingham
GucciLittlePiggy
Henrik
Henry
Honorio
Jirin
Kingoftonga
listyguy
Maschine Man
Mattceinicram
Nassim
notbrianeno
ordinaryperson
phil
PlasticRam
Poliuks
Rob
Romain
TimmyWing
whuntva

If you entered a list and are not listed here, please alert me ASAP!

The album with the most nominations (4) (ie- the hottest album in the universe)?
Why, it's Galaxie 500 - On Fire!
Didn't see that coming, did you?

Bracket is under construction and will be published no later than tomorrow. Once the selections are chosen, I will be sorting them by rank, then randomizing the quadrants and adjusting ever-so-slightly so that nobody has two entries facing off in the first round. Eventually I'll post the full list of submissions as well...
