Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
We have hit the three quarters mark of the first round. We also get two MGMT songs this week, so that’s that.
So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.
33. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008)
96. Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008)
161. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
224. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)
8. MGMT - Kids (2007)

Viva la Vida
Big Yellow Taxi
How Deep is your Love
A Milli
A Milli? Really? This is probably one of the worst songs in the Top 1000? Viva la Vida and Big Yellow Taxi, however, I have established connections with.
Staring at the Sun
In the Morning
A New England
Kids
I know Kids is a critical and forum favorite. But honestly, I hate this song. Oracular Spectacular is my #28 album, but this song was really annoying and almost crushed it. Good thing the rest of the album was great, at least.
Rocket Man
Digital Love
Highway 61
Song for Zula
Rocket Man is my favorite Elton John and a Top 100 personally. This week's "How did I Miss That?" Award goes to Phosphorescent, who was good but couldn't keep up with the stiff competition here..
Electric Feel
Sound and Vision
Oblivion
CREAM
Oblivion actually did here when it was new. We were still using the old forums back then, I think.

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
Quite a good week : 7 songs I love, 7 I really like and only 2 I don't like.
3. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
8 (tie). Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)
8 (tie). Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008)
15. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008)
Easy pick for #1, How Deep is Your Love is a fantastic dance track and a lesson in how to properly do a build up.
Pretty much a tie for 2nd place, but Big Yellow Taxi is more likely to prevent Viva La Vida from advancing so...
I'm not an anti Coldplay, I voted for both Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head, but Viva la Vida is an annoying song in a pretty bad album (redeemed a bit by Violet Hill and Strawberry Swing).
1. TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (2003)
2. Billy Bragg - A New England (1983)
4. Junior Boys - In the Morning (2006)
12. MGMT - Kids (2007)
I think I had In the Morning in my top 700 of all time for the last poll so really, great bracket. The top 2 is in a whole other league though and it hurts to have to put a New England as #2, that's a very simple but earnest and fun song.
Kids is quite good too, but the bridge is horrendous... it starts pretty well but once that horrible synthesized horn blares out it's just annoying.
5. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula (2013)
10. Elton John - Rocket Man (1972)
11. Daft Punk - Digital Love (2001)
14. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
Quite surprising how fast Discovery moved from way overlooked to quite overrated ! But Digital Love is definitely one of its peaks.
6. Grimes - Oblivion (2012)
7. MGMT - Electric Feel (2007)
13. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) (1993)
16. David Bowie - Sound and Vision (1977)
I don't like putting the Wu-Tang so low but CREAM has always been the low point of Enter the Wu Tang to my ears.
3. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
8 (tie). Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)

Viva La Vida
Big Yellow Taxi
How Deep is Your Love
A Milli
Top 2 are good. The fact that Lil Wayne has a song in the top 1000 has made be mentally distraught.
A New England
In The Morning
Staring at the Sun
Kids
Billy Bragg gets my vote easily.
Rocket Man
Highway 61 Revisited
Song For Zula
Digital Love
Top two are great, especially "Rocket Man", which is my favorite Elton John track and probably in my top 50.
Sound and Vision
CREAM
Electric Feel
Oblivion
One of Bowie's best, a solid rap and two forgettable songs. Actually, "Oblivion" was so bad it's gonna be hard to forget.

33. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008)
96. Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008)
161. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
224. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)
This ended up being a much stronger bracket than I was initially expecting... Had this not been my first time hearing the last two songs, it would have been much much closer (and for the record, Lil' Wayne is at his absolute best when he is just wildly throwing our similes without any concern with expressing a coherent thought. It's when he tries to make sense that it truly becomes abhorrent...)
8. MGMT - Kids (2007)
121. Billy Bragg - A New England (1983)
249. Junior Boys - In the Morning (2006)
136. TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (2003)
Of the brand spanking new songs in this bracket, Bragg clicked quite impressively... TV on the Radio, not so much.
49. Daft Punk - Digital Love (2001)
177. Elton John - Rocket Man (1972)
80. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula (2013)
208. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
Me and "Song for Zula" have a pretty interesting history together. It has been sitting on my purchase list pretty much since the 2013 wrap-up around here, and probably every other time I head to the iTunes store, I look it up since my memory holds it in pretty high regard. Every single time, I am so underwhelmed that I put it off 'til the next session. In fact, had I been able to find a studio version, "Highway 61 Revisited" might have actually beaten Phosphorescent, since it didn't seem to have the egotistical air that normally puts me off of Dylan's music.
158. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) (1993)
227. MGMT - Electric Feel (2007)
30. Grimes - Oblivion (2012)
99. David Bowie - Sound and Vision (1977)
There's nothing really amazing happening here (then again, my favorite Wu-Tang related song at the moment is "House of Flying Daggers", so I've still got a long road ahead of me in that respect ), but in a way this makes it my favorite type of bracket: It captures the truly excellent songs that slip through the woodwork more often than not.
This was a pretty fantastic week overall, "Staring at the Sun" was the only really meh cut here

Again group 4 is for me personally by far the best one. Group 3, on the other hand, I found really bland. Also, I'm surprised by the lack of love for C.R.E.A.M. I always found it to be the most accessible and "catchiest" Wu-Tang song

The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011) 9

Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970) 7
Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008) 3
Looking at my Bracketology ratings, it’d appear that I dislike modern R&B and rap (which couldn’t be further from the truth). But I can think of hundreds of other examples that I enjoy more than those that have come up in the game to this point…
MGMT - Kids (2007) 8
TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (2003) 8
Junior Boys - In the Morning (2006) 7+
Billy Bragg - A New England (1983) 6
Elton John - Rocket Man (1972) 7
Phosphorescent - Song for Zula (2013) 6
Daft Punk - Digital Love (2001) 5
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965) 3
Probably my least favorite bracket of the game so far, featuring my least favorite Dylan song. I know it’s silly, but I just can’t get past that whistle.
Grimes - Oblivion (2012) 9
Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) (1993) 8
David Bowie - Sound and Vision (1977) 8
MGMT - Electric Feel (2007) 7+
Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008) 8
Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970) 7
Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008) 3

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
2. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008)
6. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)
9. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
16. Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008)
I have a love-hate relationship with Coldplay, but overplayed as it is, Viva La Vida solidly stands in the love camp. A Milli might have scored better if Wayne didn't make the decision to let someone say the title in an endless loop. That gets annoying real fast.
7. TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (2003)
8. Billy Bragg - A New England (1983)
11. MGMT - Kids (2007)
15. Junior Boys - In the Morning (2006)
TV on the Radio and Billy Bragg deliver strong songs that seem to be on the verge of being a masterpiece, but lack something. MGMT is one of those bands I think are good, but of whom I still don't get the love they get. In the Morning is a bit bland, but okay.
1. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula (2013)
3. Elton John - Rocket Man (1972)
5. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
14. Daft Punk - Digital Love (2001)
Easily the best bracket of the week, even though it contains one of the lesser Daft Punk songs. I never heard Song for Zula before, but it immediately rose to the best discoveries I made during this game. Rocket Man is also among John's finest. I wouldn't put Highway 61 Revisited among my list of favorite Dylan songs or even top 5 of the album, but it's still a lot of fun.
4. Grimes - Oblivion (2012)
10. David Bowie - Sound and Vision (1977)
12. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) (1993)
13. MGMT - Electric Feel (2007)
Odd that the last few weeks I didn't quite have the same affection for recent tracks that got a lot of acclaim as others here do, but I love Oblivion, which seems to get a rather cold reception in this game up til now. The other three are all okay, but not favorites of mine. Low has much better songs.
6. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)
9. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
1. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (1970)
2. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008)
3. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
4. Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008)
None of this week’s brackets are particularly inspiring, unfortunately. Joni’s classic is #1 here not because it’s a favorite of mine but simply because I like it a little more than “Viva La Vida.”
1. TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (2003)
2. Billy Bragg - A New England (1983)
3. MGMT - Kids (2007)
4. Junior Boys - In the Morning (2006)
#1 was the first and remains one of the best examples of TVotR’s singular way of being experimental and accessible at the same time, which gives it the edge for me over Bragg’s eloquent and heartfelt but maybe-too-simple track. As for this week’s two MGMT tracks, “Time to Pretend” is the only one of that album’s hits that I really love.
1. Daft Punk - Digital Love (2001)
2. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
3. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula (2013)
4. Elton John - Rocket Man (1972)
The week’s best bracket – #’s 2 and 3 would have topped any of the others except for the last one below, and Elton is #4 mostly because I’m tired of the song (also, if you’re an astronaut, you really should understand the science, shouldn’t you?). But DP takes the crown easily with one of their finest.
1. David Bowie - Sound and Vision (1977)
2. Grimes - Oblivion (2012)
3. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) (1993)
4. MGMT - Electric Feel (2007)
#’s 2 and 3, although very different, both represent something similar – a great track that, for me, is a way in to appreciating an album that I need to know better. As for #1, it works better as a piece of the glorious mosaic that is the first half of Low than it does by itself, but that’s more than good enough.
2. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (2008)
3. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (2011)
4. Lil Wayne - A Milli (2008)

Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
1. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love?
2. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi
3. Coldplay - Viva La Vida
4. Lil Wayne - A Milli
I don't like putting Coldplay higher than #4, but "Viva La Vida" is easily my favorite of theirs, and I have no defense for "A Milli" repeating that vocal sample of its title over and over. And "Big Yellow Taxi" isn't as good as I remember it being.
1. MGMT - Kids
2. Junior Boys - In the Morning
3. Billy Bragg - A New England
4. TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun
1. Elton John - Rocket Man
2. Daft Punk - Digital Love
3. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
4. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula
1. Grimes - Oblivion
2. MGMT - Electric Feel
3. David Bowie - Sound and Vision
4. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)
"Oblivion" is my all-time #2 and my favorite song of the whole game.

Less than a day left to vote!
Re: Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 12
This was a very odd week. Not one top seed won, and three 70s songs advanced.
224. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (67, 9)
33. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (65, 8)
161. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (55, 4)
96. Lil Wayne - A Milli (33, 1)
It appears Coldplay’s castle in this bracket was on some sand pillars, as Joni Mitchell came back from a ten point (or something like that, I forget the exact number) to advance. Next round “Big Yellow Taxi” will face “Get Lucky” and “Are Friends Electric”.
136. TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (61, 5)
8. MGMT - Kids (58, 9)
121. Billy Bragg - A New England (56, 6)
249. Junior Boys - In the Morning (45, 2)
This bracket has me scratching my head all week. TV on the Radio wins with an bracketology 3 low of 5 first place votes. Two other songs in the bracket had more first place votes, but “Staring at the Sun” got almost every second place vote which punched its ticket onward. Next round TVOR sees “New Slang” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”.
177. Elton John - Rocket Man (64, 9)
49. Daft Punk - Digital Love (56, 6)
208. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (51, 4)
80. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula (49, 3)
In the closest thing we had to a blowout this week, Elton John wins by a whopping 8 points. Next round he’ll face “Archangel” and “Odessa”.
99. David Bowie - Sound and Vision (63, 8)
30. Grimes - Oblivion (59, 6)
227. MGMT - Electric Feel (55, 6)
158. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) (43, 2)
Bowie squeaks past Grimes and MGMT to get into the second round, where he will square off against “Thinkin Bout You” and “Black Dog”.
224. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (67, 9)
33. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (65, 8)
