Happy to (inadvertently) help, Doc - even if it does mean a lot of extra work for you.

Glad to see the two Game Theory albums still in the top 1000. Sorry that the reboot didn't boost the Dolls into the main list.

Eagerly looking forward to the rest!

In a similar vein, I can see "Big Shot Chronicles" being ahead of "Lolita Nation", but "Real Nighttime"? C'mon

The corrected 501-1000 list contains 16 titles dropped from the previously posted lower reaches of the top 500, all of which are now between #502-521. I won't speculate on their replacements here, and no one else should either - let's just watch the list unfold!

How did it climb that high? Outside of me and Romain, I've never seen much love expressed for this masterpiece on the forum. Otherwise, I'm disappointed to see Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. falling out of the top and Happy Sad being left out. But that's the game.

How did it climb that high? Outside of me and Romain, I've never seen much love expressed for this masterpiece on the forum. Otherwise, I'm disappointed to see Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. falling out of the top and Happy Sad being left out. But that's the game.
I have Fantaisie Militaire at 231; didn't include it last time because I only discovered it last year I think.

Ah, nice to learn someone here was converted! I hope in time it will be recognized as the seminal album it is. I could blame French critics for many things, but their unfailing love and respect for Alain Bashung managed to bring that album on AM.net, and for this I will never thank them enough.

Also, yay for Hot Rats for making the top 500 this time :happy-partydance:

The album is paranoid as hell, as almost every song is about fire, hell, death, and other topics in that vein. But at the same time, they do it with such awesome Caribbean Folk music that you forget the morbid topics they’re singing about.

From these first recordings, Pere Ubu sounded like little else. Their propulsive rhythmic pulse was similar to Krautrock, but Thomas's yelping, howling, desperate singing was and still is peculiar when compared to most other rock and roll singers.

Yes, I know that “Aja” is considered the Steely Dan masterpiece. But my favourite Dan album is “Pretzel Logic” for many reasons. It’s the last album as a band showing traces of rock music (particularly the awesome guitar work of ‘Skunk’ Baker) that they were about to lose in later albums. But, unlike the previous albums, they avoided the lengthy solos, focusing on song-writing and gaining in concision.

During the recording of "Money for Nothing", the signature sound of Knopfler's guitar may have been enhanced by a "happy accident" of microphone placement. Knopfler was using his Gibson Les Paul going through a Laney amplifier. While setting up the guitar amplifier microphones in an effort to get the "ZZ Top sound" that Knopfler was after, guitar tech Ron Eve, who was in the control room, heard the "amazing" sound before Dorfsman was finished arranging the mics. "One mic was pointing down at the floor," Dorfsman remembered, "another was not quite on the speaker, another was somewhere else, and it wasn't how I would want to set things up

At the dawn of both modal and free jazz, he kept solos short and music composed... In an era where big bands were left behind for small combos or reimagined entirely (as with, say, John Coltrane's late albums), Mingus was a Duke Ellington acolyte who approached his pieces with the formality of an orchestral composer.

This is the biggest head-scratcher of the entire poll so far for me. Not only is Smile Sessions absurdly underrated (if it had been released in 1967 instead of 2011 or whatever, where would it rank? Top 10? Top 5?), but it's behind the Brian Wilson version of Smile?? Were there people who voted for both?

The reboot has dropped The Gilded Palace of Sin from the top 1000, making it - presumably - the highest-ranking album on AM to miss our top 1000 entirely.

Also, with St. Vincent's s/t slipping down to #505, there are now 5 albums (instead of 6) in the top 500 that are outside the AM 3000. Exuma is still the highest finisher of these.

The Smile Sessions received seven votes to SMiLE's four. Jirin and Jackson's votes are both assigned to the Beach Boys. I did look this up because I was afraid there might be an error, but no, it's just preference, although it certainly is a case where an ambiguous vote would have to be verified. I don't remember any ambiguous votes, but I really don't have time to go back to each ballot today.

By the time Green Day released "American Idiot" in 2004, the band's rebellious punk aesthetic had long been co-opted by the mainstream, with a Grammy win, multiplatinum sales and a memorable usage of the group's music on "Seinfeld" attesting to the crossover. But the San Francisco band's members took it even further a few years later when they turned the sprawling rock opera of "Idiot," which encapsulated the angst and paranoia following 9/11, into a bombastic Broadway production.

You don't get more mainstream than that.

Natty Dreadlocks (synonyms "Natty Dread", "Natty", "Dready" or "Dread") is a Rastafarian term for a member of the Rastafari community. The image of such a man is often used in reggae music and elsewhere to represent an idealised personification of the Rastafari movement as a whole.

The '70s, man. Martin Luther King Jr. is dead. Malcolm X is dead. The Kennedys are dead. Kids at Kent State are getting capped. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix have both gone haint. Nixon's in the Oval Office, and the Manson murders stain the Hills. Morrison and Dennis Wilson once picked up Charles Manson on Sunset and dropped him off at producer Terry "Turn Turn Turn" Melcher's house on Cielo Drive. A few years later, Manson's acolytes would murder Sharon Tate and four others at that house, including celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring, who styled Morrison's original king-of-the-jungle coif.

Rubin (Hurricane) Carter, a professional boxer who served nearly 20 years in prison in New Jersey after being wrongfully convicted of a 1966 triple murder, became an international figure after his release as an advocate for others jailed for crimes they did not commit.

Mr. Carter, a cause célèbre in the 1970s whose plight was dramatized in an eight-and-a-half-minute song by Bob Dylan and later in a 1999 movie starring Denzel Washington, died on Sunday in Toronto after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 76.

Johnny Marr thought the title, a reference to the familiar name of HM Prison Manchester, was a bit too on Moz’s schnozz, if you will, but at this point he knew the score. Soon enough, the band’s storied partnership split into its own strange ways; three years later, the prison exploded.

Critics tend to prefer the tortured albums, the records that show the internal turmoil of the artist. That’s why the most acclaimed albums of Big Star are the second and the third. But what’s wrong with Big Star first album? It’s an awesome piece of music filled with pop gems and rock tracks, with Californian harmonies and shouted harsh voices, with naturally played acoustic and electric guitars.

Bone Machine is obsessed with decay and mortality, the ease with which earthly existence can be destroyed. It was the most bizarre record I've ever worked on," says Mark Saunders about Maxinquaye, the 1995 Tricky album that he co-produced with the artist. The term synchronicity is coined by Jung to express a concept that belongs to him. It is about acausal connection of two or more psycho-physic phenomena. This concept was inspired to him by a patient's case that was in situation of impasse in treatment. Her exaggerate rationalism (animus inflation) was holding her back from assimilating unconscious materials.
Hope that clears everything up for you.

Very quietly, for six years, a band has been brewing. They'd pop up once a while behind Ronnie Hawkins or on their own as the Hawks or affectionately called "the Crackers," but it was sort of hip to know who they were outside of Toronto. They left Toronto three years ago to tour with Dylan. But when the concerts were over, and the boos had turned to standing ovations, what was to become of these nameless faces?

Bob Marley was the biggest star coming from the Third World, and if only for this he deserves all the acclaim. But there’s a lot more. His music was vibrant, contagious, friendly and hypnotic. And there was the combative message too, somehow substituted in his “Exodus” in England for more reflective matters and love songs ranging from the personal (“Turn the Lights Down Low”) to the universal (“One Love”).

From an RYM review by Honorio

The guitarist was Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who moved on to the Doobie Brothers and then became a self-taught expert in missile defense.

A year before his major-label debut, XO, was released, it seemed unlikely that Elliott Smith would even be on a major, let alone having his record be one of the more anticipated releases of 1998. He had certainly earned a great deal of critical respect with his low-key, acoustic indie records and was emerging as a respected songwriter, but he hadn't made much of an impression outside of journalists, record collectors, and indie rockers. An Oscar nomination can change things, however.

In 1972, the Stooges were near the point of collapse when David Bowie's management team, MainMan, took a chance on the band at Bowie's behest. By this point, guitarist Ron Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander had been edged out of the picture, and James Williamson had signed on as Iggy's new guitar mangler; Asheton rejoined the band shortly before recording commenced on Raw Power, but was forced to play second fiddle to Williamson as bassist. By most accounts, tensions were high during the recording of Raw Power, and the album sounds like the work of a band on its last legs...

One of the most successful groups of all time, Led Zeppelin has often been taken to task for using the work of other artists without citing the source, particularly blues artists… On the website Perfect Sound Forever Will Shade refers to Jimmy Page and company as “Thieving Magpies,” and cites several instances where Led Zeppelin’s records bear a strong resemblance to earlier recordings. According to Short, that Led Zeppelin released these records without proper songwriting credits amounts to outright theft.

Also, I'm happy to see that Black Saint is the highest Mingus album, a much better album than the more acclaimed Mingus Ah Um, in my mind.

Well, son of a gun - sorry about that, Tracy. I underestimated you. (After #'s 241-500 were posted in the pre-reboot thread, I did the math and predicted which of the 2011 top 500 entries would turn out to have missed the top 1000 entirely this time around, and Chapman's debut was one of them. I should have known better, particularly considering how well "Fast Car" does in our song competitions.)

I still think Moby's Play will show up down the road. My new pick for odd album out is Tigermilk.

Roxy Music's debut in 1972 was so mind-boggling and innovative that it must have been difficult to envision the band ever topping it. Yet, they managed to do just that with For Your Pleasure, and only a little over nine months later at that. Released as glam was reaching its peak, For Your Pleasure stands as not only a benchmark album of the genre, but as one of the greatest albums of the 1970s.

Although the mythical stature of the Stones relies in bringing back the blues to young audiences and exemplifying the rock ’n’ roll way of life, they were also an excellent POP band, as good as any other British band (and I’m talking about The Kinks or even The Beatles). Such imagery, coupled with the tragedy of his murder in 1980, has often led to Lennon’s being sentimentalized as a gentle prince of peace gazing off into the distance at an Eden only he could see. In fact, he was a far more complex and difficult person, which, in part, accounts for the world’s endless fascination with him.

In the fall of 1980, Apple ships the first Apple III units in limited quantity. It runs twice as fast as the Apple II and has twice as much memory - 128k of RAM. It is also the first Apple computer to have a built-in floppy drive, a Shugart 143k 5.25-inch floppy drive.

moby spent his junior high school and high school years shooting with his Nikon F and a Yashica mat 120, and when he was 17 he built a darkroom in his basement.
at college/university moby had a double major in philosophy and photography, and although he never graduated he spent years and years in the suny purchase darkroom, developing and printing for himself and others.

For Fear of Music we worked with Eno again… we recorded all the basic tracks in the loft where we rehearsed, which was also where Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth lived… it sounded far better than the messy lo-fi one would expect.

This is a great punk (post-punk, technically) album, but like most punk albums it has one major problem... Nearly every song has that dirty, staccato guitar sound, and that’s great, but it makes every song sound the same.

3 Kanye albums in the top 200 is fine by me :D

Also, I never knew that Moby went to Purchase! (I did not go there, but I do know people who went there).

Also, I'm going to be a pedant and point out that I had "Merriweather Post Pavilion" at 65 on my list.

Keep 'em coming, DocBrown!

Hoping everybody learns something for all this work. I may not be Honorio, but I'm certainly going to places on the net I've never been before.

Nick, Sorry I keep missing your noms, but your list is really hard to read, since you voted for every top album!

Don't worry about it DocBrown, you're doing a fantastic job!

And yes, I am guilty as charged! Of the ten albums from the top 200 we've already seen, the only one I didn't put in my top 500 was the Can album.

Aretha Franklin’s first Atlantic album pretty much established her as one of the biggest soul acts of her day (hell, of all time). Of course, there are some great covers, including Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” and Otis Redding’s “Respect”, which she pretty much made her song and subsequently a women’s rights song

I called Chuck up, said “Chuck, I need an Anthem”. ‘Cause we knew the song was coming out in the summer of 1989, and in the summertime there’s always one song in New York that if it’s a hit, you can hear it everywhere – on the subway, cars, in front of people’s houses. I wanted this song to be an anthem that could express what young black Americans are feeling at this time. At this time, New York City, under Mayor Ed Koch was racially polarized, and I wanted this song to be in the film. I called Chuck up, and the first song, wasn’t it. I said, “Chuck, you gotta come back. You gotta go back into the woodshed. We came back with an anthem – Fight the Power. Fight the Power. Fight the Powers that be.

Air's Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel were a couple of cerebral keyboard geeks from Versailles, France, where they obviously don't get out of the studio much. Their space-pop debut, Moon Safari, was a truly obsessive hommage to easy listening, a sublime Eurocheese omelet. They built their music out of classic Sixties French schlock: bongos, castanets, vintage electric piano, dream-weaver synths and shag-carpet organ straight from the soundtracks of movies like Un Homme et Une Femme. The music is full of hidden jokes, as when "Remember" replicates the distorted drum intro from the Beach Boys hit "Do It Again"; Air's Brian Wilson allusion isn't some Smile-era obscurity — it's a beach-party blowout.

No I.D. told me I was the first one to have multiple big producers on one record. He jokes and says I f--ed up rap because before that it was all in-house, one producer, two guys who did the whole album. So I don't know how to compare my record -- I'm too much of a fan of everything else

As the high profile pair passed by, a confused onlooker captured a 17-second (video) in which he questions the identity of the rapper.
“Who’s he?” the man questions. Jay-Z, less than impressed, stares him down and simply quips “Who are you?”

Joni Mitchell had sung in choirs in public school, but had never taken guitar lessons or any other kind of music lessons… Joni will talk compellingly and passionately about alternative tunings for hours, comparing them to the different colors that Van Gogh used in his paintings.

Keep them coming ! :D.

I'm surprised to see Bryter Layter so low, btw. Especially taking into account that it made it to the top 150 in the last poll.
