Well, here in Mexico it is acclaimed, but not too much. By the way, here it is more common to hear the Los Lobos's version, probably because the Spanish sounds more natural. But yeah, It has always intrigued me that, as you say, the Ritchie Valens song is more known among English speakers than any other Spanish language song. Actually, in the project I mentioned before (something like Acclaimed Music, but with music in Spanish and Portuguese), Valens's La Bamba ends in place 75 among the best songs, meanwhile, the Los Lobos's version finished in 66th place, so it seems they are close.
This leaves me wondering how would be an hypothetical list without language trends. The Ritchie Valens's song is 369th here in AM.

How about the original record version?

Ignore the year on the video, it's actually 1929.

I do not know if I would call it the original record version, Bruce. I think it's very, very possible that older recorded versions have existed, but did not reached our days, or at least have not reached this U.S. company called Youtube.

It's the first time a version of the song was released on a record. It's a Mexican release.

It's the same. How do you, or the person who made the site, can confirm that? Any reliable source? There a database of Mexican recordings of the first 20 years of the last century? You're not confusing "The oldest record found" with "The first recording made"?

Edit:
Ok, after some quick research, I found that there are versions of the song recorded on phonograph cylinders that were sold in the first years of the last century. Still, the first recorded version (in disc) is probably made in the first years of the 1920s, by the Secretaría de Educación, which at the time was under the supervision of José Vasconcelos. Vasconcelos and his team investigated and collected 78 rpm recordings of Veracruz sones which were played live, to spread this music throughout all the country.
Vasconcelos was a wise man, oh yes.

It depends on your definition of "recording". But defining exactly what was the first recording is not really important, at least not in this song. Do not look at the first record as if that was the start, better look at the history of the song and how it fades until the seventeenth century.

No, but maybe you should ask the collector Alfonso Villaseñor, I think he could tell. Or try to contact the Fonoteca of the INAH ( http://www.inah.gob.mx/fonoteca ).

OK, so I don't know why but I always have a thing for songs in 3/4 time signature, or in different triple time signatures sometimes. I really have no idea why, and most of those have been favorite of mine before I realized they have that in common.

So here are my favorite songs in triple time signatures (and added any other song of this year that I would consider in my all time 500) :

1964 : Bob Dylan - The Times They Are a-Changin'
1965 : The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
1966 : Otis Redding - Tennessee Waltz
1967 : The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Manic Depression
1968 : Leonard Cohen - So Long, Marianne
1969 : The Beatles - I Want You (She's So Heavy) (Only partly in ¾)
1970 : Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You
1971 : Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (all time top 50)
1972 : Nick Drake - Places to Be

1973 to 1984 : none, I would have to dig a bit there...

1985 : The Pogues - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (Also : Renaud – Mistral Gagnant, The Pogues – A Pair of Brown Eyes)
1986 : XTC - 1000 Umbrellas
1987 : The Pogues - Fairytale of New-York
1988 : Les Négresses Vertes - La Valse
1989 : Pixies - Pass This Gun
1990 : pass
1991 : Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Breaking the Girl (all time top 30)
1992 : R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts
1993 : Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
1994 : Jeff Buckley - Grace (all time top 20) (Also : Drive Like Jehu – Luau, Weezer – My Name is Jonas)
1995 : Elliott Smith - The White Lady Loves You More (Also : Sparklehorse – Homecoming Queen)
1996 : Modest Mouse - Dramamine
1997 : Built to Spill - Velvet Waltz (2nd favorite song of all time) (Also : Elliott Smith – Between the Bars, 3rd favorite song ever)
1998 : Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 (favorite song of all time) (Also : Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane Over The Sea)
1999 : Ben Harper - Alone
2000 : Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely
2001 : Mogwai - Take Me Somewhere Nice
2002 : Queens of the Stone Age - A Song for the Deaf (4th favorite song of all time)
2003 : Calexico - Sunken Waltz
2004 : see below
2005 : Sufjan Stevens - The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us (all time top 20)
2006 : Beirut - Brandenburg (that's pretty much a tie between 4 songs of Gulag Orkestar)
2007 : Caribou - She's the One (Also : Elliott Smith – New Disaster)
2008 : TV on the Radio - Love Dog
2009 : Fever Ray - I'm Not Done (all time top 50)

2012 : Bat for Lashes - Laura
2013 : Mutual Benefit - Strong Swimmer (Also : The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye)

2004 is an incredible year for 3/4 songs, here is my top 5 with their rank in the songs list I did for last poll :
Kanye West - Spaceship (54)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Cannibal's Hymn (57)
TV on the Radio - Ambulance (131)
Animal Collective - Leaf House (151-200 section)

So... you love the waltz Nassim ;-) (6 songs with waltz in the name)

You are maybe not into classical music but :

Do you try La Valse by Ravel ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMSgWhIENSk

Or, in this rhytmn, the sublime Valse Triste by Sibelius.

This is the only one we agree on, but you have the title wrong. It's "Junker Blues."

Nice list! I might have to check out some of these pre-50s pieces that I'm not terribly familiar with
I'm sure this one is familiar : "L. Daniderf - Je cherche après Titine". One of the first american movie star popularized this song.

Fantastic lists on this thread. Hope I can find time to dig deep in some of them, to name a few Mindrocker's, Dan's and André's (Dutch music is one of my many gaps).
Blanco, I like a lot your list, I'm very interested in your project. I got many lists but mainly of music coming from Spain (that probably will ruin your overall because of non-comparable weights). Anyway maybe you could find interesting a list that Rock de Lux published in 1998 for their #150 issue. It was called "the best 150 songs of the XX Century". These were the songs in Spanish and Portuguese (the numbers were the ones on the overall list):
15. STAN GETZ & JOAO GILBERTO “The Girl From Ipanema” (Brazil, Bossa Nova, 1964)
33. LA LUPE “Puro teatro” (1969). (Cuba, Bolero).
49. CONCHA PIQUER “Tatuaje” (1941). (Spain, Copla).
55. CAMARÓN “La leyenda del tiempo” (1979). (Spain, Flamenco).
65. FERNANDA Y BERNARDA DE UTRERA “Se nos rompió el amor” (1990). (Spain, Canción española).
68. BOLA DE NIEVE “Vete de mí” (1958). (Cuba, Bolero).
70. TOM JOBIM & ELIS REGINA “Aguas de março” (1974). (Brazil, Bossa Nova).
79. RUBÉN BLADES Y SEIS DEL SOLAR “Desapariciones” (1984). (Panama, Salsa-reggae).
99. CARLOS GARDEL “Volver” (1935). (Argentina, Tango).
106. LOS PANCHOS “Lo dudo” (1954). (México, Bolero).
113. EL TRÍO MATAMOROS “Lágrimas negras” (1932). (Cuba, Son).
137. SISA “Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol” (1975). (Spain, Nova Cançò).
143. PARAÍSO “Para ti” (1980). (Spain, Movida madrileña).
148. VAINICA DOBLE “El tigre de Guadarrama” (1981). (Spain, Folk-Pop).

Oh my, thank you so much. This list is great!
And of course I'm interested in all the other lists you have! Lists of Spanish music that I have tend not to reach consensus, so I think those lists that you may have would be very, very helpful. The more the merrier. Actually, I also wish you could share a personal list (Or several, if they have different themes). Yours would be the first list I would add that it was not created by a professional critic, but a musician. I hope that as the project grows, this can happen more and more, and I would be honored to have your list as the first one in this category.

First of all I should say that these are not my personal lists, these are lists extracted from the AM main list.

The following lists are one-per-year lists trying to focus in three supposed "biases" that may show on the critics lists (and by extension in AM lists). We talked about these issues many times before and these one-per-year lists are by no means an extensive study on these subjects, I only selected the most acclaimed song by black acts, female acts and non-English speaking acts.

The criteria for including non-English speaking acts was simple, the song lyrics should include a significant amount of words different than English, so I excluded instrumental songs (i.e. Buddy Powell's "Un poco loco") and songs only using non-English words on their title (i.e. Les Paul and Mary Ford's "Vaya con Dios" or Atlas Sound's "Te Amo"). And, of course, songs sung in English by acts from non-English speaking countries (i.e. ABBA's "Dancing Queen") were also excluded.

The main problem came when trying to define the (mostly) black or female acts. Of course, the solo artists (i.e. Aretha Franklin) were included but I defined some criteria for the bands:
a) Obviously the all-black or all-female bands (i.e. The Jackson 5 or The Shirelles).
b) The bands mostly white or male but fronted (in terms of both lead vocals and songwriting) by a black or a female (i.e. Thin Lizzy or Blondie).
c) Bands with at least half of its members black or female (i.e. Booker T & the MGs or My Bloody Valentine).
d) In bands where black or females are minoritary I only included the songs with credited songwriting input and lead (or co-lead) vocal duties. That's why I decided to exclude Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime," New Order's "Temptation," "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle," and Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)" (despite the involvement on song-writing of Tina Weymouth, Gillian Welch and Régine Chassagne) and Chic's "Good Times" and The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" despite the lead vocals because of the lack of song-writing input. On the other hand I included Sonic Youth's "Teen Age Riot," Portishead's "Sour Times" and "Machine Gun," Fugees' "Ready or Not" and Arcade Fire's "Reflektor," being probably the Sonic Youth inclusion the most disputable according to my own criteria.
e) I did not include "guest" females or black artists (I mean these "featuring" items) even if they included songwriting credits. That's why you won't find Massive Attack feat. Shara Nelson's "Unfinished Sympathy," Eminem feat. Dido's "Stan" or Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" in the female department and Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams' "Get Lucky" or Disclosure feat. AlunaGeorge's "White Noise" in the black department.

And that's enough for the intro, let's go to the first list (note: the numbers between brackets show the position on the AM songs list for that particular year):

Wonderful songs on this list. But, can we consider that there is really a bias against black musicians? Honestly I wouldn't say that. There is for sure a higher percentage of songs by white acts in the AM Top 6000 but the amount (and the high positions) of songs by black acts is significant enough (at least in my opinion). Only three years didn't have a "black song" inside the Top 10: 1975 (the year that ignited that angry discussion with Bruce about the subject), 1990 and 1997. And 24 years (out of 70) featured a song by a black artist on #1.
But it's easy to find a different racial bias in the lists, as Nassim humorously pointed in the infamous 1975 thread. The racial distribution in the US is different but, if we take into account the whole world, 15% of the world population is white and other 15% is black but 54% is yellow (25% East Asian, 21% South Asian and 9% Southeast Asian), see it here. And probably less than 1% of the songs in AM list come from this racial group. Obviously amidst the possible reasons for including a song in a best (or acclaimed) songs list proportionality is not the most important (and that's OK). But all of you will agree with me that in music terms Asia is still the great unknown.

Tomorrow… women!

So let's go to the second list, you will notice that the positions on AM lists by year are significantly lower than in the "black list."
Note: I used this time the cover arts of the album releases (in the other lists I used the cover art of the first release).

Mmm, I think that I detect here some kind of bias (unlike with black artists in my opinion). Women are more than 50% of the population and by no means the 50% of the songs included in AM lists feature women. But surely you can't blame exclusively the critics for this. The incorporation of women to professional music activities (as to many other professional fields) has been long delayed because of many cultural and religious reasons too numerous and prolix to name it here.
Only two comments: a) while in traditional folk and classical music the women (at least as performers) are almost fully integrated I'm afraid that this is not the case with rock music (and to a lesser extent with pop music). In fact there are whole scenes (like metal or hip hop) that not only feature not many female musicians but even display a macho attitude that in practice only allow the presence of women as fans. But b) like in other fields the incorporation of women is improving a lot during recent decades, if we compare the 2013 songs list (with 39 songs on the Top 95 with women involved) to the 1973 songs list (with only 14 songs with female participation in the Top 95) we find a notable improvement, from 14% to 41% in 40 years.

And tomorrow, the non-English list!

Fascinating work, as always, Honorio! As we know, there has been a lot of discussion in the forum regarding a bias against black artists; but your lists do demonstrate a deeper past bias against female artists. (There was also a debate about Henrik weighting lists in favor of female artists, but a quick examination of the extreme ends of these two lists show why it was needed.) Looking at overall #1 songs per year, black artists had 22 #1 songs, while female artists had 7 (with two of these, from the early 60s, by black artists at a time when female vocal groups were particularly popular). On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you look at years where the highest ranking song by black and female artists finished outside the Top 10, the numbers are 3 and 15, respectively. As you pointed out, though, the trend does seem to be getting better, with many female artists ranking at or near the top over the past couple of decades (and represented by a number of different genres, as well).

I’m quite sure that the most glaring bias of all will be shown tomorrow when you unveil the non-English list, since many Western critics’ lists (unfortunately) don’t even consider these songs. It will probably be particularly disappointing to see how few years have any non-English songs in the Top 10, and just how far down the lists many of these great songs rank. Thanks again for yet another thought-provoking topic. I’m looking forward to tomorrow!

Many thanks, JamieW. As you perfectly guessed, only 5 years had a non-English song on the Top 10 and 20 years didn't have a non-English song in their Top 50. Anyway here it is the third "biased" list (in this case I added the language(s) used and the country of origin):

And here it is the real bias, the language. Of course the lyrics are an important part of the song but (believe me!) you can enjoy a lot a song without understanding the lyrics at all. And nowadays, in the Internet times, it's usually quite easy to find in the net translations of many of these songs.
A lot of interesting songs on this list, in fact I'm going to make a new thread about the subject. I haven't decided yet if I will post every non-English song from 6000 to 1 or group it by years, decades or even languages. Talking about languages, and only considering these #1 of every year we have a clear winner, French with 28 songs, followed by Spanish with 18 songs and German with 9 songs. Other languages were Portuguese (2), Bambara (2), Arabic (2), Icelandic (2) and Italian, Xhosa, Duala, Yoruba, Bambara, Russian, Punjabi and Korean (with one song each).
But if we compare this list with the excellent list Dan posted on this same thread (and also Miguel's list in another thread), I can't help but thinking that our official list could be much better. No Víctor Jara, Joan Manuel Serrat, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Rubén Blades, Paolo Conte, Goran Bregović, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Césaria Évora, Rachid Taha, Compay Segundo, Orchestra Baobab or Tinariwen on our main list (I know, I know, some of them are represented by albums and not songs). The songs on the list above are good but they simply cannot be the best non-English songs ever.
But of course we cannot blame Henrik for that, he included all the critics lists available and made sure that these songs could have the opportunity to enter the main list (that's why maybe there is a more significant amount of French songs, there are probably more French lists than from any other countries). The fault lies completely in the critics, we should blame them for being so lazy and not doing properly their job. Why oh why there are so few lists of world music? How long must we wait for a list of best African songs or best Asian songs? Aw c'mon, critics, do your job…

I include a Spotify playlist with the non-English songs.
Note 1: the German versions of the Kraftwerk songs are not included on Spotify (at least in Spain) so I've included the English versions.
Note 2: the original versions of the songs of 1975, 1991 and 2006 are not included on Spotify so I replaced it with (more or less) similar covers.

Honorio, your posts are always so wonderfully informative and laid out that it's just mind-blowing. Thank you for your work! I know that French songs have had a big boost in the last update, I and others did work hard to achieve this result so I must say I'm happy with it. However, if I did want to push French representation, it was because it was easier for me, but I've been trying to find lists from Asia and Africa in the past years without much success. The only Asian one I found (for songs) is Rolling Stone Indonesia's 150 greatest indonesian songs of all time:

http://noise-harmony.blogspot.fr/2010/0 ... -time.html

It looks like Asia and Africa are not very much into lists for the moment.

It’s disappointing, but not surprising, to see non-English songs rank so low in the yearly lists. What did surprise me was the large number of songs that I’m not familiar with. It seems that, thanks to games like the World Cup (still my favorite game since I joined the forum) and the outstanding yearly lists of the forum members (which I try to explore each month), I’m more familiar with these songs and artists than the ones on the main list.

As for the critics’ lists, you’re absolutely right, Honorio. The problem is, unlike the positive trend we see for female artists, I don’t know if this will get better. Most critics’ lists are taken from publications, which (since they are a business) will always attempt to appease their readers. They seem to have a perception that their main readership would have limited interest in music that doesn’t fit inside narrow categories. I’ve noticed that the tops of Rolling Stone magazine’s polls are often stacked with artists that have been around 30 or 40 years, while other, younger publications often load their lists with picks they deem “hip,” “cool,” and “surprising,” since this is what many of their readers want to see. The best hope I can see is forum members continuing to find as many non-English lists as they can (like the Indonesian list Pierre just posted), since we know great songs from non-English countries are always going to be underrepresented on most lists (as Jazz is on most albums lists). Thanks again for all the hard work it takes bringing these lists to us. I know from other threads how busy you are, so I don’t know how you find the time, but it is greatly appreciated!

Many thanks, Pierre and jamieW. I agree with your arguments about the subject. And jamieW, it was not that much work, I just simply went on through the upper part of the lists trying to indentify the black, female and non-English acts (by the way, I made a mistake, probably I should have put on 2013 "Reflektor" in the non-English list because part of the lyrics were sung in French). And yes, jamieW, I often ask myself how I find the time. Maybe when you are doing things you really like you go fast.

I've never heard the black music being underrated one. Based on the list, it doesn't look like there is.
Also, the women seem to be upward trending in recent years.

Since this thread showed up again after three years I decided to update my "biased lists" (race, genre and language). You can see the updated list above on this same thread. Apart of adding the songs from the years 2014 to 2016 and updating the positions (the numbers between brackets) there were some changes.

On the "black list":
1993. Wu-Tang Clan | Protect Ya Neck replaced Snoop Doggy Dogg | Gin and Juice
2002. The Roots feat. Cody Chesnutt | The Seed 2.0 replaced Missy Elliott | Work It
2005. Kanye West | Gold Digger replaced Amerie | 1 Thing
2010. Kanye West feat. Pusha T | Runaway replaced Cee Lo Green | Fuck You!
2013. Kanye West | New Slaves replaced Kanye West | Black Skinhead

On the female list (most of the changes involved Madonna or Portishead):
1985. Kate Bush | Running Up That Hill replaced Madonna | Into the Groove
1986. Madonna | Live to Tell replaced Madonna | Papa Don't Preach
1994. Portishead | Glory Box replaced Portishead | Sour Times
1998. Madonna | Ray of Light replaced Britney Spears | ...Baby One More Time
2000. Aaliyah | Try Again replaced Madonna | Music
2008. Santogold | L.E.S. Artistes replaced Portishead | Machine Gun

And on the non-English list (bad luck for Alain Bashung).
1961. Gilbert Bécaud | Et maintenant (French, France) replaced Les Chats Sauvages | Twist à St. Tropez (French, France)
1975. Gérard Manset | Il voyage en solitaire (French, France) replaced Kraftwerk | Radioaktivität (English/German, Germany)
1979. León Gieco | Sólo le pido a Dios (Spanish, Argentina) replaced Camarón | La leyenda del tiempo (Spanish, Spain)
1980. Taxi Girl | Cherchez le garçon (French, France) replaced Alain Bashung | Vertige de l'amour (French, France)
1985. Étienne Daho | Tombé pour la France (French, France) replaced Soda Stereo | Cuando pase el temblor (Spanish, Argentina)
1987. Mori Kanté | Yé ké yé ké (Bambara, Guinea) replaced Los Lobos | La Bamba (Spanish, USA)
1991. Pizzicatto Five | Twiggy Twiggy (Japanese/English, Japan) replaced Alain Bashung | Osez Josephine (French, France)
1997. Air | Le soleil est près de moi (French/English, France) replaced Molotov | Gimme Tha Power (Spanish/English, Mexico)

I like some of these changes (Mory Kanté or Pizzicato Five) but I do not like some others (I'm particularly sad to see Camarón being replaced by León Gieco)

I've included a Spotify playlist with the non-English songs (see above).
