Films of the 1950s: 1958

Post by JimmyJazz »

Two more years to go!

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is August 31st.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1958:

RYM: http://rateyourmusic.com/films/chart?pa ... countries=
RT: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/?year=1958
IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/year/1958

Every list so far has Vertigo at #1 or #2. Almost makes me want to not list it. But yeah, it's easily on the shortlist of best films of all time, it's easily going to win the decade.

Edit: Didn't remember I already voted

Thanks for the results Jimmy. I noticed my #2 of the year (彼岸花 [Equinox Flower] with 48 points) just missed the top 10 (another Ozu-movie that missed the final by only one point). But what about Es geschah am hellichten Tag [It Happened in Broad Daylight] by Ladislao Vajda. It was Miguel's #2 and Charlie Driggs' #7 so it got 49 points too (the same score Big Deal on Madonna Street has). I know ties in movie polls are nightmare because in cases like these there are usually 0-2 people who have seen both #10 candidates. So is the new rule that movie with more votes will go to the final? I'm perfectly fine with that.
