The single or the LP version?

The single is not just an edit of the LP version. They are two completely different recordings.

Don't worry, I have fairly "generic" taste too. I guess that's what happens when you get most of your music from this very website.

Your favorite song is in the top 10 on AM for every year in the first 13 years, and it's in the top 5 for 12 of the 13 years.

We do not match up on any of the 26. The fact that I've never heard of 20 of your 26 may have something to do with that. :greetings-waveyellow:

I'll also take a crack at my favorite songs of the last fifty years. It's possible that I have certain songs in the wrong years as I'm just going off my yearly Spotify playlists; I can't guarantee I have each playlist compiled 100% accurately. A * indicates my favorite song of the decade and ** indicates my favorite song of all time.

This was INCREDIBLY difficult to have to pick just one song. Several years included multiple songs that could well enter my top 25 all time. Those years involved some pretty arbitrary decisions.

edit: I also decided to cross-check my list with the yearly lists on AM. Additionally, I had to make changes in the 2008 and 2009 lists as I just found out that "Flume" and "Sweet Disposition" were released in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

1964: The Temptations - My Girl (#6)
1965: The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (#2)
1966: Bob Dylan - Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) (bubbling under)
1967: The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever* (#3)
1968: Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (#6)
1969: The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (#2)

1971: Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven* (#2)
1972: The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off (#62)
1973: Bruce Springsteen - Blinded by the Light (bubbling under)

1977: Television - Marquee Moon (#6)
1978: Bruce Springsteen - Badlands (#52)

Ok, 2 things I often love : openers and 3/4 time signature songs.
Not sure I will be able to find the 2nd for each of the past 50 years (but not much doubt for the past 20 years though) so here is :

my favorite opening song of every of the past 50 years.

1965 : Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
1966 : Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
1967 : The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning*
1968 : Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Day
1969 : The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
1970 : Black Sabbath - Paranoid
1971 : Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
1972 : Alice Cooper - School's Out
1973 : Iggy & the Stooges - Search and Destroy*
1974 : Roxy Music - The Thrill of it All
1975 : AC/DC - It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'Roll)
1976 : Bob Dylan - Hurricane
1977 : Bob Marley - Natural Mystic
1978 : Kraftwerk - The Robots
1979 : Motörhead - Overkill XTC - Making Plans for Nigel
1980 : Motörhead - Ace of Spades
1981 : Kraftwerk - Computer World*
1982 : Hall & Oates - Maneater
1983 : Shannon - Let The Music Play
1984 : Don Henley - The Boys Of Summer
1985 : The Waterboys - Don't Bang the Drum
1986 : Big Black - Kerosene
1987 : Big Black - The Power of Independent Trucking
1988 : The Primitives - Crash
1989 : Madonna - Like a Prayer
1990 : Sinead O'Connor - Feel So Different
1991 : Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
1992 : Kyuss - Thumb
1993 : Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock
1994 : Beastie Boys - Sure Shot
1995 : Sparklehorse - Homecoming
1996 : Modest Mouse - Dramamine (I feel like a traitor to myself 10 years ago for not picking Bulls on Parade)
1997 : Radiohead - Airbag
1998 : Fatboy Slim - Right Here, Right Now
1999 : Boredoms - ☉
2000 : Yo La Tengo - Everyday
2001 : Low - Sunflower
2002 : Mc Lusky - Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues
2003 : Puppetmastaz - Pet Sounds*
2004 : The Hives - Abra Cadaver
2005 : Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass
2006 : The Knife - Silent Shout*
2007 : Klaxons - Two Receivers
2008 : TV on the Radio - Halfway Home
2009 : Bat for Lashes - Glass
2010 : Foals - Blue Blood (though Sleigh Bells - Tell 'Em might have been the most striking opening statement of the year)
2011 : Black Keys - Lonely Boy
2012 : Andy Stott - Numb
2013 : Chance the Rapper - Good Ass Intro
2014 so far : EMA - Satellites
* means the song comes from my favorite album of the year.

With no surprise it was a very hard call for 1997, a year stacked with many of my favorite albums ever and lots of other wonderful opening (Yes! I am a Long Way From Home, Leave Home, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, L'école du Micro d'Argent, Smack My Bitch Up, Tender, Randy Described Eternity, My Own Summer (Shove It)... )
More surprisingly 1990 was a tough one with Ride, The Sundays and Jane's Addiction putting their best song in the front of their albums... but Sinead still won with her 2nd best !
Through all the years I had to leave out big favorites like Leonard Cohen's Avalanche, Boris - Pink, LCD Soundsystem's Get Innocuous or The XX's Intro)

The best song of each year in Spanish or Portuguese:
You left out 1962. I'd go with this:

Nice list Blanco, but where's "La Bamba"? It's arguably the most well known song of the Spanish language by non-speakers.

Though I had to check one note - "Careless Whisper" is most definitely 1984's #32 ;)

I have a real problem with the whole concept of time, and I lurked here at AM for a long time before joining because it seemed every game required a knowledge of when something was released. I don't know "when" it is right now (it is now... it is always now) and until recently I never bothered to add dates to my music files, except where the metadata was included on the CD or download. Then I tried to fix my files using TuneUp, which was a disaster (should be called OutOfTune). And I still couldn't care less when something is released other than to play games here.

I hoped we'd see other non-year lists after mine, but it seems everybody else likes conventional timekeeping too much

So in deference to the"one per year" rule implied by the title, I will try to be conventional this time and present my favourite albums by year. Using the Shēngxiào (or Chinese Zodiac) of course.

Year of the Rat - Lou Reed, Transformer
Year of the Ox - Kate Bush, Hounds of Love
Year of the Tiger - Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks
Year of the Rabbit - Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run (run, rabbit, run)
Year of the Dragon - Tracy Chapman, S/T
Year of the Snake - Laura Marling, Once I Was an Eagle
Year of the Horse - Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Year of the Goat - The White Stripes, Elephant
Year of the Monkey - Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
Year of the Rooster - Rickie Lee Jones, Pirates
Year of the Dog - The Grateful Dead, American Beauty
Year of the Pig - The Who, Who's Next

For those who may be curious, the Year of the Pig and Year of the Rabbit rock, historically. The Year of the Rat and Year of the Dragon less so.
