Please submit your list starting with #1 (no reverse order please) according to the following example

Hah. R.E.M. will probably come first in my poll as well, though not at that level of fandom. I'm giving my first listen to Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes and really enjoying it.

Top 15's with 5, 6, even 11 R.E.M. songs? WTF?!?! Sorry for being so acidic people, and I don't wanna question anybody's music taste, but this is a serious offence to all the other great music released in 1992. And the funny thing about it is that Automic For The People ain't so fantastic at all.

Having just started my listening for 1992, I've found songs from Ride and Tori Amos that come ahead of pretty much every REM song except Nightswimming...1992 seems like such a promising year, perhaps not full of classics like 1991, but more depth, with the beginnings of careers and the continuation of others. With great old western Rock and underrated world music (thinking Baaba Maal). It really does feel treacherous to give Automatic such a high pedestal.

I don't understand why a few posters are so surprised by the dominance of Automatic. 1992 was not an all-time great year, especially for albums. Since I and several other posters see Automatic as clearly the best album in a subpar year, it would stand to reason that its songs would dominate the song list. I myself like lists that capture the actual listening preferences of an individual--lists that will invariably gravitate towards the artists/albums/genres he/she favors.

Agreed. Automatic for the People is a phenomenal album, and in my top 10 albums of all-time, and to be in my top 10 an album has to have at least five songs rated 8.6 or higher (top 600 songs). In most years not all songs rated 8.6 make it into the top 10, but 1992 is just a pretty weak year it seems to me. Without Automatic it might be the weakest year in music history, with not a single other album even exceeding an 8.0 for me.

Don't forget that Radiohead's "Creep" is eligible as 1992.

even if the single was out in '93, it was releazsed in a compilation in 1992 so it's rightfully from 1992.

Oh I agree, everybody is entitled to make his own lists, and maybe I was a bit harsh. It's just that I'm not really looking forward to vote for a final list at the end of the year containing a bunch of so-so R.E.M. songs that not really have any business being there.
And about 1992 not having enough quality, take a look at those great lists by Michel, Greg and Slick at the top of the page.

I have to say I disagree with this for a couple of reasons.
1) I don't like changing or creating new rules midstream.
2) Wasn't it you who was telling people not to limit themselves to one or two songs per artist if they really liked more songs during the 2011 poll? I believe you said this because you were going to vote for a shit-ton of Fleet Foxes songs?

FYI - 8 of my top 15 songs for the year (as of now) are Pavement songs. If I find anything better over the course of the month, that'll change. To me, not much comes close to Slanted & Enchanted & Watery, Domestic in 1992.

I too disagree with placing an artist limit on the songs. However, I also encourage (as always) people to listen to as much as they can over the course of the month to ensure their true tastes are adequately represented.

Rocky thanks for your opinion, I got it even if I could have done without personal remarks (and it's not the first time). What did I do to you that you always need to pick on me ? :D I'm usually a nice guy, and only fools don't change their minds.

So if you don't think we should put a limit, let's not do it. I'll personally limit myself to 3 per artist. Well, maybe   (no Fleet Foxes in the 90's)

I'm not surprised by Automatic being way in first, but there's no way it yields 10 of the best 15 songs released in the entire year.

Sure, what's your email?

And I would just like to admit that my list is R.E.M. overkill (as a few people have pointed out), but that album just towers above everything else from the year.

I'm posting my songs list a bit earlier than usual this month, because I can't see my top 15 changing much and if I don't post the list now I'll just waste too much time over the next few days moving the songs below my top 15 up or down, depending on my mood. I apologize if offense was taken, none was intended. I didn't realize my comments were "personal" in any way. I was merely trying to give an opinion and using your wise and valid advice from a previous poll to make my point. That being said, here are my albums for 1992.

Sure.
I'm changing my list a bit because I forgot "Slanted and Enchanted" was from this year. So, you critics of my overly-R.E.M. list can have some (minor) relief.
1- R.E.M. - Nightswimming
2- R.E.M. - Drive
3- R.E.M. - Monty Got a Raw Deal
4- R.E.M. - Try Not To Breathe
5- R.E.M. - The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
6- R.E.M. - Man on the Moon

10- The Cure - Friday, I'm In Love
11- R.E.M. - Ignoreland
12- R.E.M. - Find the River
13- Pavement - Trigger Cut / Wounded Kite At: 17
14- Neil Young - Harvest Moon -
15- Tom Waits - I Don't Wanna Grow Up

And the funny thing about it is that Automic For The People ain't so fantastic at all.
I'm considering adding a new rule next month : no more than 3 songs by the same artist per list.
We'll have to see how many songs folks include from OK Computer when we get to the 1997 poll ;)

I have my own rule that I only go off the AM charts and RYM top 200 because I was voting for songs that had no chance so I thought it would make more of a difference voting this way. But, if I wasn't doing that and my favorite album of all time just happened to be released the year we're voting on it's very likely that a good majority of the songs from that album are going to be my favorite songs of that year. I think it's an honest list if Automatic is your favorite album. It's more honest than mine.

Yes, I think that cryptic post was probably a subconscious result of missing nj’s randomness. To explain, in short: I like it that Rocky’s criticisms tend to be upfront. He doesn’t stab someone in the back (an English saying which means to betray someone’s trust in a cowardly fashion). I was just being a bit silly and felt like quoting one of Oscar Wilde’s many great one-liners. Cryptic posts won’t become a habit of mine.

Anyway, back to the music. While I’m responding to one of your posts, nicolas... thanks for bringing my attention to Bad Livers’ Delusions of Banjer (I listened to it because it’s on your all-time albums list). It’s exactly the kind of old-time bluegrass I love. But sadly I suspect we’ll be the only ones voting for it.

Yes, you're right and I have to apologise myself for reacting so swiftly. I'm having hard times (the job mainly) and I misunderstood Rocky's friendly bluntness. So Rocky please keep on being blunt and direct.
And yes the Bad Livers rule.
And I'm surprised by the lacks of Jayhawks on your lists, gentlemen. Their best album (along with its follower). This is great country rock.

No apology needed. Group hug.

P.S. We all have these clever little subtitles based on album titles under our names. I just want it on the record now that I want mine to permanently read "Lovesexy." Sorry, Moonbeam, I thought of it first.

The Jayhawks will be on my list.

Initial findings:

The Tom Waits album is so interesting. I listened to it at about 4am alone in my room and I think I listened to "That Feel" 7 times in a row or something. I always find that the best time to listen to music is just before going to bed or just after. Don't quite know where it stands up in comparison to R.E.M., but it very well may top 5.

The other album I've really liked is the Tori Amos one. My word, I think "Me and a Gun" and "Winter" actually chill me to the bone.

Sonic Youth's Dirty is a lot less "accessible" than what I've heard from critics. I almost expected a pop album, but it's very similar in style to their albums before. It also has Theresa's Sound World, which I adore.

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy sound really interesting to me on a very first listen, though it verges on preachy.

I hope that all the voters of Ride's Nowhere back in 1990 vote for its superior follow up "Going Blank Again", whose "Vapour Trail" is this 6 minute epic

Jayhawks were on my list but Hollywood Town Hall is my least favorite of their peak years 89-97.

I'd rank them like this:

5 star (Probably the two best alt-country albums ever released):
Tomorrow the Green Grass
Sound of Lies

4 star:
Blue Earth

3 star:
Hollywood Town Hall
Rainy Day Music

2 star:
Smile
The Jayhawks (Bunkhouse Tapes)
Mockingbird Time

Is "Protect Ya Neck" eligible for 1992 or 1993? And if so, why isn't anyone voting for it? It will likely be my number 1 for whatever year it's eligible for.

Yes, Jackson,

Wu-Tang Clan's "Protect Ya Neck" is eligible for 1992.

According to RYM and Wikipedia, it was originally released in 1992 as part of the "Protect Ya Neck"/"After The Laughter Comes Tears" single by Wu-Tang Records.

Please amend your lists accordingly if you have already posted and missed that song.

I do hope it's not gonna cause a problem.

Here's my list in progress.

So far only 10 albums. I have a lot of listening to do, and tough choices to make between albums I've heard long ago (Human Touch, Tostaky, Arthur H,P Weller, N Young...) and those I've never properly listened to (RATM, Lucinda Williams, Les Innocents, Arrested Dev and many world and roots albums like Pops Staples)

* Albums

1. R.E.M. - Automatic For The People
2. The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
3. Bettie Serveert - Palomine
4. The Tragically Hip - Fully Completely
5. Neneh Cherry - Homebrew
6. The Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray
7. Magnapop - Magnapop
8. Freedy Johnston - Can You Fly
9. The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion

11. Los Lobos - Kiko
12. Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted
13. Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
14. Catherine Wheel - Ferment
15. PJ Harvey - Dry

As my favorite all-time band, R.E.M. is a logical winner. Nevermind got more than 1000 points in this poll, I think Automatic and OK Computer will be able to do the same.

nicolas already recommended Hollywood Town Hall and I can only repeat: Please listen to The Jayhawks' album, it's awesome!

Palomine is a great album from the Dutch band Bettie Serveert (which means "Bettie serves", named after former Wimbledon runner up Bettie Stöve).
