Films of the 1950s: 1956

Post by Petri »

OK I open the thread but JimmyJazz you can take care of rest of this if you want.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is June 30th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1956:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Well, seeing as how it is very unlikely that anyone is going to get another ballot in at this point, here is the Best Films of 1956 According to the Acclaimed Music Film Board!

I was eying the results and noticed the surprisingly high score of Bob le Flambeur (considering the only high placement was Stephan’s #2 but he voted for only two movies).
During the 70s poll we decided that five movies isn’t the minimum amount of movies to vote (it’s possible to vote for only one movie) but we also decided that if someone votes less than that the points given are lower.
Stephan wrote: If you submit a list of fewer than 5 films, the maximum number of points you can give to each film is lowered.
So Stephan’s score is: 1. The Searchers (John Ford) 20 p and 2. Bob Le Flambeur (Jean-Pierre Melville) 15 p. And Jirin’s 1. A Man Escaped 40 p, 2. Aparajito 30 p, 3. The Searchers (5 pts) (max would be 20), 4. Written On The Wind (1 pt) (max 15).

Luckily (because of our other unwritten rule) the only change in the list is that The Killing beats The Searchers. Le mystère Picasso [The Mystery of Picasso] has more points than Aparajito but there is also a rule that movie has to have more than one vote.

1. The Killing (Stanley Kubrick) | 307 / 11 / 3
2. The Searchers - John Ford | 291 / 12 / 4
3. Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut [A Man Escaped or: The Wind Bloweth Where It Listeth] (Robert Bresson) | 270 / 8 / 4
4. The Man Who Knew Too Much (Alfred Hitchcock) | 221 / 8 / 1
5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel)| 147 / 8 / 0
6. Written on the Wind - Douglas Sirk | 114 / 7 / 0
7. The Wrong Man - Alfred Hitchcock | 100 / 10 / 0
8. Bigger Than Life - Nicholas Ray | 88 / 4 / 0
9. Bob Le Flambeur (Jean-Pierre Melville) | 51 / 4 / 0
10. Aparajito / Satyajit Ray / India | 43 / 3 / 0

11. Le mystère Picasso [The Mystery of Picasso] (Henri-Georges Clouzot) | 50 / 1 / 1
12. 早春 [Early Spring] | 42 / 3 / 0
13. Baby Doll (Elia Kazan) | 40 / 1 / 0
13. Et Dieu... créa la femme [...And God Created Woman] | 40 / 1 / 0
15. Tea and Sympathy – Vincente Minelli (USA) | 38 / 3 / 0

I’m also sorry if I sounded rude. It wasn’t meant to be. I’m really thankful that you’re hosting the poll now again.

I was a bit surprised that “less than five movies”-rule was so old (I should have written it in the rules again). If I haven’t checked I would have thought it was taken along during the 60s poll. Nevertheless here are the maximum points.
